Life gets in the way as upstate NY sisters, Marley and Abigail cling to each other and their young children. But a babysitter introduces them both to Jay Malik, a medical student from India who becomes their lifeline to happiness, forgiveness and healing. "Another tear-jerker from Jenkins. This is a story about family,Love.forgiveness and redemption. You will laugh and most definitely, you will cry. The characters are well developed and believable. The storyline, while difficult at times, is an incredible journey into the intricacies of love and family and ultimately, the ties that bind us together.
I'm never surprised by any of Suzanne Jenkins' books. They all pull me in and keep me turning pages until I hit the end. This one was different from any of here others that I have read so far and was just an awesome story.
It got to me right from the start and I had such a hard time putting it down to do anything else. Sisters, Marley and Abigail are single mothers who have had a tough life. Their mother, Pauline, was very abusive to them and their father, Hubert, stood by and let it happen. Now as adults they don't feel worthy of true love or kindness coming their way. Marley has 3 children and is not a great mom, but she does not hit them. She feels like nothing she does or can do is good enough. Abigail has twin boys and never married their dad. He was abusive to her and she didn't really see it until after his death. He treated her terrible and yet she would go back for more, until they broke up, he had another girlfriend and Abigail found herself pregnant. She was terrified of telling anyone and was able to keep it a secret until she went into labor. I sorta got the feeling her father suspected it when he took her to the hospital. After she gave birth to twin boys her mother and father helped her out as much as possible. Though her mom still found fault in her way of doing things.
Both girls meet very nice men who will change their lives forever. Marley meets Jay, from India, who treats her like a queen and shows her what it's like to feel true unconditional love. He is the best thing to ever happen to her short of her 3 children, who's father does not help out at all. Jay is the one person that Marley has needed her whole life.
Abigail is introduced to Jay's friend, Brian, who has always been crazy about her. They are both working in the same hospital, where Abigail is working on getting her nursing degree. He loves her and her boys and wants to be there for them forever.
Pauline, who has cancer, wants to make amends to her daughters and is scared that they will never forgive her. After reading some of the things she did I can't say I would blame them if they didn't though. But we are suppose to forgive, it's the forgetting that is the hard part. After a terrible tragedy, Marley and Pauline find peace and do patch things up between them. Abigail has a harder time of it though and was treated way worse growing up too.
Will things be good between these girls and their parents and will they have their happy ever after life and love? This book was a wonderful book that puts it out there like it is. No beating around the bush or sugarcoating things. Life can be hard enough without having an abusive parent and these ladies learn that the hard way. They both will do anything for each other and their children. They are both kind and loving people in their own ways. They deserve to have a good life with true love and kindness after living many years with intense pain from the one person who should have protected them and loved them unconditionally.
I had a hard time putting this book down for anything. I read until late into the morning hours and when I should have been doing other things. It was a wonderful, heartfelt, heartwarming, sad, happy, at times funny, story of three families trying to overcome the past so they can move on with their futures.
Never be afraid to read any of Suzanne Jenkins books. She is a wonderful author with a wide range of genres to choose from. This was a definite 5 star book. Thank you for writing this Ms Jenkins.
This was an enjoyable read because the story line was not typical and because the characters were very well-drawn, intriguing and likable. This story is about childhood abuse, forgiveness, single parenting, trauma and tragedy -- and, above all, about relationships. Some of the male characters were just too perfect, but, hey, it's fiction. Although this was not a particularly short novel, there were times when events or changes seemed to happen too fast with no evolution. And, yet, the author pulled it off. I feel more positive about this book after having finished it than I did while reading it.
I do love Suzanne Jenkins' work, having read Pam of Babylon -- and I have several others of her books waiting for me to get to them. I think she offers something unique in her plots and story lines -- and her characters have depth. Pam of Babylon was a very different and refreshing read, and I am eager to read the other books in that series.
I randomly chose this book and started reading. It grabbed me right away, and now, less than a day later, I've finished the entire book and want to know more about these people and what happened after the last page was turned. I am driven now to find another novel by the same author. Many thanks to her and looking forward to getting to know her and all her characters better.
An interesting story of a dysfunctional family trying to recover. The ending was a bit too abrupt, too "pat" for me. And the side story with Albie just seemed unnecessary, especially when Abigail fell so quickly for the new guy. The back-and-forth timeline seemed rather forced, or awkward. I got lost a few times, but quickly realized what was going on. Other than that, this was a quick read that I enjoyed.
I was totally drawn into this book the moment I started reading. I became vested in the characters. The story surprised me in some instances. My only criticism of the book was the fast pace of the romance of the sisters and the sudden end of the book.
This was the first book that I have read by Suzanne. I was quickly immersed in the family's history and how the abused sisters handled their lives as adults as they became parents. The hardships they faced will have the reader wondering what the outcome will be. Excellent story.
I love that the sisters support each other when their mother attempts to redeem herself for the abuse she inflicted on Abigail and Marley as children after being diagnosed with cancer. Although it doesn't seem possible, a fire is the catalyst to forgiveness and moving forward.
Starts off a bit slow, kinda unbelievable story last me, but turns into a page turner. The ups and downs, the family dynamics were described enough to understand the characters. Good book.
I am ready and excited to read the next in this series. The story took a turn and kept me captivated. The stories of two sisters who lived through a hard childhood and reconciling with their parents will draw many readers in to their life.
This is an easy , pleasant love story with the addition of coming to terms with abuse within the family as well as the unconditional love between a mother and her daughters.
There are a lot of events in this story. There’s love, hope, laughter, resentment, heart-break, forgiveness, self-discovery. The characters are well developed and it is paced well to keep you interested throughout.
Really enjoyed this book. The 2 sisters make memorable characters. The more I read of Ms. Jenkins the more I like her. I have to agree it is a tearjerker.
Life hasn't been easy for the two sisters in this story, but they work through the ups and downs, supporting each other. It's a story many older people may relate to, with physical punishment and verbal abuse a common factor in previous generations. I know the physical abuse is now frowned upon, but wonder how the next generation cope without falling back on what their parents had done. It's a very different story, and yes it mirrors life in it's simplicity.
We are all products of our childhood. Sisters, depending on each other, must face their pasts in order to change their lives. Abusive childhoods have scarred them deeply. They must get past the abuse of their childhood so they can love themselves. Only then can they find and allow love into their lives.
Sisters Abigail and Marley, both single adults with children, grew up in an abusive household, an almost constant cruelty and ridicule from their mother. Til one day their mother decides she wants to make amends for the way she treated them. Can they both forgive her? This is a very good book. I highly recommend reading it.
I can't praise Queen of Romantic Suspense Suzanne Jenkins highly enough, for bestowing what should be compulsory reading as a modern classic/'instruction manual', in Someone Like You.
She bravely explores a full range of emotions and behavior within a three generational family saga of abuse, and its outcomes on the lives of two sisters, that will wring out your emotions like a dishrag.
Someone Like You sensitively but firmly warns that such a harsh upbringing may have similarly damaging effects in their futures. Does history have to repeat itself?
Explore the tough truths and realities within...and take its valuable life lessons to heart!
I enjoyed this book. it brings out family struggles that most families experience; love, hate, forgiveness. I must have been attached to it because I read it completely on a lazy Sunday.
This book could have been way better. The characters seemed way too perfect and fake to me, issues that should have been big seemed minor, people fell in and out of love at the drop of a hat, and in general things moved way too fast with not enough detail.
This was a good read. There were several layers of complexity to the story and in the opinion of this reader, were poorly developed, giving a disconnected feel to the story.
