If you've read my reviews, you know that I really enjoy Antony John's books. He has a great voice, and I'm going to pick up every book he writes. The Elemental trilogy is no exception. I remember reading the first book and being sucked into this dystopian paranormal world where everything was bleak, but yet, anything was possible. I loved the voice of Thomas and really enjoyed Alice, the fiesty sidekick and the sweet Rose, who had a lot of potential to become more than just sweet. The paranormal aspect was also fascinating and I loved learning more about it throughout the trilogy.

The second book, I also enjoyed, but because it is a trilogy, the world had to expand, and there was something about being on the island of the first that really worked for me, while this expansion didn't as much. The cast grew in numbers and I lost a sense of knowing the characters as much as I would like to. That said, Thomas and Alice and now Rose dominated the life of the story and a couple of newcomers added a great element of danger as well as intrigue.

Needless to say, I was eager to read the third book. As the first two, it was fast paced, and as promised, it is full of explosions, harrowing escapes, and a large number of wonderful reveals. I definitely enjoyed the twists and turns, and overall, I was satisfied by the ending. A lot of disparate pieces are brought together in this final volume, and I don't think readers will be disappointed.

That said, I had some issues with it that were basically the same as the second book. There were a lot of characters and a lot of parents (I guess I know now why so many parents are killed off in YA! You get YA characters + their parents and that's already tripling your character count!), and while Antony did a heroic job of reminding you of who was who, I didn't feel like their personalities were distinct enough to keep them straight. This is very difficult to do and there are only rare books with a wide cast that are able to do this (and honestly, probably have many more pages in bulk than this trilogy).

Overall, I thought this was an incredibly entertaining trilogy with a solid main cast of characters and an imaginative dystopian world. In a deluge of dystopian YA books, this world definitely stands out. Pick up your copies now!

I loved the two previous books so much... I don't know what happened here. I guess I got tired of Thomas being almost dead yet managing to get up and fight.

First, Ranaoke was deserted and now it turns out it has people hiding?
How long were they away from Ranaoke? Apparently it was just a week but I had felt it was a lot more than that.

Although everything came out nicely put together, I was tired of the constant sense of danger, the secrecy, and the tension.

Alice fell down and was overtaken by rats, yet she survived and (did I read right?) she barely had some scratches.

The fights with the rats didn't make sense; they were biting and biting yet Thomas kept going and going.

As always, endings tend to be a little disappointed because everybody forgives everyone.

I am glad I read this series. I completely loved the first two book. This one was necessary to finish the story but I didn't love it.

After how much I enjoyed the second book, this one was a bit of a let down. The story felt really weird and didn't always seem to make sense. The whole book was just one big revelation after another without much build up.

I wouldn't say it was a really bad book but it certainly was strange to read and hard to get through at certain points.

Honestly these books could have each been five stars but there was something in each one that just annoyed me. Still, a fun series to read. Fast and easy and enjoyable.

Citas
History is intellect; the present is all emotion.

City Calendar:
This is what happened during the week.
The elementals see Dare's ship. They take the ship. Rose and Dennis get the Plague. Alice is burned when they try to kill the rats. Thomas finds out he can take powers. They go to Roanoke. Thomas finds out that Alice has the third journal. Tomas talks to Alice about it. Alice tells him to move on. They see a raft with four dead bodies on it. They pull in the raft and find out that one body is alive. That body is Tessa. They go on the island and see a body during their search for Skya Thomas's mother. They are attacked by rats and find the pirates. They escape to the ship. Thomas sees Griffin cure Dennis of the Plague. They fight the rats that try to come on the ship. Thomas finds out that Dare is on the ship. Dare reveals he's Alice's father. Thomas confronts Tarn Alice's mother. He plans a rescue to save Alice, Jerren, his father, and Ananias who were stranded on the island. He takes Tessa to Dare, and Tessa dies. Dare explains the past. The ship goes to the island to get Kieran. (Thomas saw him before when he got attacked by rats. He saw Kieran controlling the rats.) They find him. They set the clan people free. He sees Alice, Jerren, Ananias, and his father about to be hanged by Jossi Dare's ex-second-in-hand. They take them down after Jossi kicks Thomas's father's box down. His father dies. Rats come. The group looks for Kieran. They find him on top of the water tower. Thomas and Kieran combine to draw the rats in, so the others can kill them. The fire that kill the rats makes the stilts fall. Many die. The water tower falls. They see Dare on a piece of driftwood. Ananias appears hurt and on the verge of death. Griffin draws Dare to save Ananias. Jerren, Tarn, and Skya who were thought to be dead appear. They get to land. Griffin and Nyla save a sick man to prove they, the elementals, have worth to let them live. The clan people start to rebuild, reluctantly letting the elementals help. Griffin saves Thomas from the Plague. Thomas talks to his mother. He decides to leave and explore the mainland. Alive, Jerren, and Rose join him as he goes off to explore.
And that's what happened this week.

Opinions:
I didn't really like the series. It was just okay. It didn't surprise me.
I liked the powers. Elemental powers are fascinating. The way you could use the power in this book was interesting. Tornadoes from wind/air power. I like that the powers aren't restricted to just elemental. We have Jerren's sound powers. Tarn and Alice's enhanced sight and sound. And Griffin. The seers. The powers Thomas has. (I'm not sure how to categorize it.) They use their powers to survive. To make sure no one gets the Plague. To continue on. I think that powers would be fantastic in real life. I think I've said that people would abuse the powers, though. I'm not sure if I like the idea of people abusing fire powers.
And plot twists were interesting. They were surprising. Alice and Dare being related? The many deaths? Skya being alive? Whoo. These people get too much thrown at them. I don't know how they bounce back. Part of plot twists is how the characters deal. They have to react. Whether someone is, for example, a traitor or maybe alive even though they were presumed dead. You can cry. Smile. Stay the same. Get angry. Get quiet. The way they react shows part of who they are.
I also like Alice. She is feisty. Daring. Brave. I wish she was the protagonist. She has more going for her compared to Thomas. If she had crazy powers like he did, that would only make me like her more. She did what she thought would benefit everyone else. And she is like Thomas. Reclusive. Didn't interact. (You know...she's the better hero really. Thomas is too romantic. And he is simply...annoying. Alice is take-charge. She's a leader. Thomas hides in the back. Sure, he's a male Juliett from 'Shatter Me'. But that doesn't mean he can't rise up. Rose did.)
This story had too many 'I thought you were dead' moments. This was annoying to me. It makes it sound like someone has resurrection powers. Seriously. It's driving me crazy. Jerren. Tessa. Skya. Tarn. Why is this false hope happening? We don't have people randomly showing up even though you think they're dead. It's like...a crime show. An undercover cop who has to fake his/her death. I want that for crime shows. Not my books. Especially not these post-apocalyptic, fantasy books.
The ending wasn't...satisfying. It felt like it wasn't enough of the Skeleton Town. How did they survive? Did the Elementals get killed off? Did the clan people accept them? What about Kieran? And Skya? Did she ever cross the chasm between Thomas and her? There are too many questions. I also feel like Thomas is running away from his problems. He's not fighting them. He's fleeing to the mainland. He's not trying to control his powers. I think that, even though Rose touches him, he gets nothing for what he went through. He lost more than he gained.

This series was such a disappointment. The premises were interesting, but the execution felt flat and it wasn’t like I thought it would be at all. Maybe for a younger reader ?

This is the 3rd and last book of the series but I feel the plot is basically the same as the 2 others : the survivor of the colony are chase by pirates, this time on a ship. Once they manage to get temporary rid of them, the new threat is infected rates, carrying the plague.

The Guardians are a bunch of liars (which I new since the first book), and it was revelations that were coming out of nowhere one after another. I never felt connected to any of the characters.

At the end, I just did not care, one chance this book was short.

I enjoyed the third and final book of the Elemental trilogy. It gives us a nice conclusion to the story while leaving potential to revisit them in the future. I think I’d rate this book just slightly behind the other two in the series but it’s still enjoyable. The introduction of Kieran felt a little forced and I wished the story stayed focused on the group of Elementals we had followed more but it still worked well enough.

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

Renegade, you have stolen my heart! Wow, my heart is still pumping from the adrenaline that I had felt while reading this. Wow, this trilogy has truly moved me! Empowered, I have felt, especially while reading this last book. Amazing, just amazing!

I bought Renegade the first day it came out, but schoolwork and writing and everything have pressed down on me, preventing me from reading it. And it was the saddest thing, because Renegade just sad on my desk, staring intently at me, taunting me, begging me to read it. And I gaze back at it with an aching heart, wanting to scream at it that I want to read it too, more than anything. It was hard, it really was.

But then today, I have shed of all of my work, and I snatched up Renegade, and I read it all in one sitting, barely looking up from the book all day. And can I just say that IT WAS SO GOOD! An epic ending to the trilogy!

All of it really fell into place! I just love how the fantasy got mixed into the history. I remember learning about the lost colony of Roanoke, and about John White, and the history. When I read about how that contributed to Thomas and his colony, I was blown away! The mix of the elementals made it very intriguing!

SO. MANY. PLOT TWISTS! SO. MANY. SHOCKS! Goodness, I was shocked at it all! At first I was in disbelief at some of the stuff that went on, but as it was explained, it just made so much sense! I probably looked like a fool, gawping at the pages, but things that happened were just so surprising!

Combine! Combine!

That is what was repeated through Renegade. It turns out, Thomas can combine his element with anybody else, and it becomes stronger, much stronger. The combinations throughout this book are so epic, for it would probably be heart-stopping to watch if you were there. It was so amazing, for the combining made things so much more interesting, and even save lives at points! When you hear somebody shout “combine!”, brace yourself, because you are about to read something awestruck worthy!

The characters. Oh my, can I just say that I love them all? I really do! I have come to love Thomas, Griffin, Ananias, Rose, Dennis, Alice, Nyla, and Jerren even more in this book. And as new people are introduced, I have come to like them as well. Even the people that I had absolutely hated in the two books before, I had come to like in this one. Because everybody changes, at least a little. You get to see sides of people that you would not of thought you’d ever see. My favorite three are Thomas, Griffin, and Ananias (why Ananias? I know, it sounds weird to like him out of all of the important people. I really have no idea), for I have loved the three brothers since book one.

If only I could be like them, bold, defiant, quick-thinking, responsible. I adore their actions, how they’re able to do the things that they do, without complaint, and so gracefully and effectively. I wish our real world people were like this, that there were more people like these characters. The people today are ignorant and not caring about a thing but their appearance, and stuff like that. We need more people like these characters! They are just awesome!

The rats! THE RATS! Oh my gosh, Renegade has created an utter fear of rats in me. I downright fear them now. The things you discover about rats is just… unnerving! Bone-chilling! I shudder at the thought of them. They will plague my dreams now (heh… Plague… pun… nevermind).

There is trust in this book. There is also betrayal. It gets really confusing at who trusts who and all, but it is actually quite fun to figure out. This sounds awful, but I kind of like when everybody gets crappy at each other, and they all start snapping at each other. Everything gets worked out after a while, so all gets good, but I still love it when they argue and feelings get hurt. (Oh goodness, that just sounded terrible! I’m sorry!)

Renegade has non-stop action and adventure. It is heart-pumping, and outright exhilarating, even from the first chapter. There is dramatic jumps and explosions, and rat waves (don’t ask), and so much more! I was in awe by all of the action. It is what kept me reading it all day long!

So, if you cannot already tell, I loved this book, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. I believe anybody would like it, for this Elemental Trilogy has such a diverse mix of all different kinds of genres. Fiction, action, adventure, romance, historical fiction, fantasy, and more!

So go read Renegade! Or… if you haven’t read Elemental or Firebrand, it would be very wise to read those first; then this book will make sense! But go read this trilogy! It is one of the best trilogies that I have ever read! Go and feel the power of the Elemental Trilogy!

"But I’d been missing the point. My future wasn’t about one day, and it certainly didn’t rest on something as reliable as the sunrise. Every day that I lived, my future was about me and my element. There was nothing more unpredictable in the world."

Way way way too many secrets are still left. You almost need a book dedicated to all the secrets themselves. There are just so many questions left that I still have that haven’t been answered. The idea of the book is great and the book revolves around secrets coming out, but the characters need answers to those secrets and they just weren’t there.

Interesting conclusion to the series. The end was a little bittersweet, but pretty realistic for what Thomas and his friends went through. Overall I enjoyed this series.

John, Antony, Renegade (Elemental, #3). pgs. 294. Penguin Random House, 2014. Language: G, Mature Content: PG, Sexual Content: G

On the run from their uncle, Dare, who thinks they two have "the solution" to the Plague, Thomas and Griffin and their friends are injured, running out of supplies, and to far out to sea to be ale to use their newly discovered elemental powers. Their goal: to get to Roanoke Island to rescue Thomas and Griffin's mom from the clutches of pirates. To make matters worse, there's a new adversary even more dangerous than Dare. Can Thomas, Griffin, and their friends defeat Dare, save the brothers' mother, and keep "the solution" safe? Wil they be able to master their power in time?

The continual world-building is amazing. The characters are likable and well-developed. Action packed from star to finish, this complex, well crafted story is impossible to put down. Fans of the series will not be disappointed with the conclusion of this series.

So going in to this book, I was expecting more of a MG level novel – I’m not sure why exactly but somehow I was expecting more of a younger audience. I’m so glad I was wrong though because this book is definitely in the YG category and it is surprisingly good.

What I liked about this book:

Unique plot and setting – the fact that this was a dystopian society and somehow a small group of people with elemental powers have survived on an island while everyone else seemed to be trapped on boats and most do not have any powers. In a way, this trilogy definitely had a “us vs. them” mentality because of the power differences but was also set in a different environment. Most of the books out there are either one or the other so I liked how this author meshed these two aspects together. Another aspect was the fact that the Plague was brought on by rats so whoever has a fear of rats, probably should not read this novel especially the third one because they became a large part of that third book. I always knew that rats were dirty but didn’t think of them as the Plague-giver and I can’t believe that rats forced humans to escape to either the water or nearby islands. Crazy. .

Characters grew a lot and matured – this story followed Thomas who grew up his entire life without having an element when everyone else in his society had a special power. He definitely felt inferior compared to the others but at the same time, he didn’t let it stop him from stepping up and having his own place in the community. I liked how he was still optimistic and cheerful with a good personality. He definitely wasn’t someone you would call a “Debbie Downer”. It also helped that his peers treated him with respect especially after disaster hit and their troubles began. He was the one they relied on and listened to. The other main girl, Alice, was such a resourceful and bad-ass chick. She clearly thrived in danger and took it up on herself to keep everyone safe so with the two of them, they were able to keep everyone alive. I also appreciated how honest she was and to be perfectly honest, I thought Alice and Thomas would get together. One other character that I really thought matured a lot was Rose. In the beginning, she was this quiet and docile character who mainly used her ability to catch fish to help the community but after the whole disaster thing, she grew up and became a lot more realistic rather than simply living in that idealistic/fantasy world of hers. She started to stand up for what she believed in and wasn’t afraid of speaking up.

The various plot twists – while there were a few areas where it was pretty obvious what was going to happen but there were also a lot that I did not see coming. I won’t go into too much detail since some of these plot twists are major parts to the trilogy. However, I liked that Antony kept me guessing throughout the books which is something that doesn’t usually happen.

Overall, great trilogy and great ending – the last book was a great wrap up to the novels. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy, sci-fi or dystopian novels. This trilogy managed to wrap those three genres together in a pretty package. Plus, the covers aren’t too bad to look at either.

I have a love-hate relationship with trilogies and other types of series. When I find a really good book, I hate coming to the end because that means I don't get to visit the wonderful characters again. This is why I love all sorts of trilogies; they allow me to extend my visit with characters I like and want to know better. And then when I'm really hooked on this relationship, they leave, too. So I was really looking forward to "Renegage," the final book in the Elemental trilogy by Antony John.

The excitement and action picked up right where we had left off in the second book, which I won't go into here in case you haven't read that book. One of the interesting developments in this book is the continuing shift of position. When this story began in the first book, everyone's job and position in the hierarchy are clearly defined. While a couple of characters do not enjoy their position, they are pushed back into line. As the story continues, roles, power and understandings change and evolve, in some ways as they would normally, and in other ways much more dramatically (after all, this group lives in an unusual time after a Plague has decimated the world's population.

Thom, the outcast, and Alice, the rebel, become to come into their own, but aren't certain how to handle these new roles. The biggest challenge they face is that while they are growing up and coming into their own, outsiders are trying to use them and kill them. Not exactly your normal teen challenges.

Once again, John develops the characters in a strong manner. I found myself really liking the characters, while occasionally getting frustrated at them for making decisions I disagreed with intensely...much like real people I know in a setting I could only imagine.

I highly recommend the series, especially "Renegade" for its character development and fast pace.

This book was really good. Thomas and his friends are now at sea trying to get back to Roanoke Island. They then have to face Dare who is chasing them in his ship. Thomas and his friends make a plan and hijack and take Dare's ship along with his food. Thomas and friends then reach Roanoke Island but then have to face a major problem. Read and find out what happens. The reason I gave it the 4 star rating is because I wouldn't classify most books as amazing so this was really good just not amazing. People who like magic or wizard spells or thing like that and people who also like adventure, suspension and more. Read and find out more.

I liked this series. I liked the portrayal of the elemental powers, and I liked how the characters, though they seemed to fall into standard stereotypes, were actually quite different and surprising in their actions and development. The plot wasn’t any radical, but still unique. Really, only the writing itself was lackluster, but it worked fine. A ultimately well-done, quick read.

This book was good. It kept the pages turning, and the plot was excellent as well as how the climax played out. I read it in a day and definitely enjoyed it.
And yet something about it feels lacking. I think it is the fact that there don't seem to be any deep relationships between the characters at the end, and any that did exist get broken by Thomas' s choice at the end of the novel. That bugs me, I guess.
All in all it was a good read though, and I recommend it.

By far the best installment in the Trilogy...finally I got what I hoped for in this series - a great battle of elements...I thought the characters were well developed and the ending of the trilogy was satisfying enough but undoubtedly left open for more stories in this world...would I read them? Maybe not but for the most part this Trilogy itself was a quick read and at times enjoyable once you're willing to invest time into the story...

It was a struggle to get through. Half the characters were annoying, especially Alice. And a bunch of useless lies. The people never learn. It seemed to me it was pretty little liars with powers and the adults being the one who was lying

The best book out of the series was the second. I had to see how the story ended. It's funny how the author hints to people being accepted equally yet our main characters still have reservations. I think I would still be interested if the story continued with what they all find on the mainland.
