Her first publication, The Perfect Companion: Understanding, Training and Bonding with your Dog, a comprehensive guide to canine psychology, training and problem solving, was published in June 2012 and won an IndiePENdants' award for quality. Karen is also working on her first fiction novel, which combines her love of writing, wolves and fantasy - Wolf Clan Rising which is due to be published 2017.
Karen is now living the dream, she resides in a country cottage on the west coast of Ireland, drawing inspiration for her writing from the peace and beauty of her surroundings where she shares her life with her husband, two daughters and nine special needs pets. Her seven rescue dogs and two rescue cats have a mixture of emotional, behavioural and physical disabilities
One of Karen's favourite sayings: 'Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.'
Excerpt: Wolf Clan Rising BLEYD
The setting sun filters through the forest, casting golden rays that dance with the spirits of the living canopy. Through the dappled sunlight, a lone wolf moves on silent paws along the narrow trail, his powerful legs cover the ground at an easy trot. Far to the north, the distant howls of stranger wolves carry to him faintly on the wind; he pauses, pricking his ears towards the sound. Licking his nose he inhales to explore his surroundings. The north east wind brings with it the scent of snow from the high peaks and the freshness of the White Water river. Close by, rain and earth, the souls of trees, and spirits of a myriad living things that inhabit the forest. The wolf smells what is and also, what has gone before. The older scents are fainter, like the tracks of ghosts. He registers this in a few heartbeats then lifts his muzzle and flaring his nostrils, casts his mind out further still, seeking the one scent that has caused such restlessness. The one that surrounds him, an invisible force that pulls him further and further away from his pack. The scent of the she-wolf. On the wind, a minute trace of what he seeks causes his heart to race. He lifts his head and raw emotion flows from his lips, quietly at first, rising and falling until the air is filled with a long and wavering howl. Caught by the wind, it travels through the forest. Away to the south his own pack add their song, their voices weaving around his, wrapping him with warmth and comfort, and bringing with it an overwhelming sense of loss. In the midst of the voices, he hears his soul brother calling to him. His chest tightens and for a moment he looks back over his shoulder but as twilight descends, the faint cry of the she-wolf beckons him north.
I laughed at every turn of the page. Every part of this book will ring true to anyone who has owned a dog. If you put yourself in your dogs shoes as you read along you'll be nodding your head in agreement with a grin on your face from start to finish.
A fun read.Having two hounds myself, I could relate to a lot of what Karen had between the covers. I can admit that I am very well trained indeed. A dog lover will get more than one smile from this book and may even pick up a tip or two.
Adorable read about how dogs view things, and how they easily manipulate their humans. Very funny book, had me laughing and smiling from cover to cover.
What a lovely little book, written by Bob, a Westie and master human trainer. I was surprised to find that my own little terrier, Muffin, has a little way to go to reach Bob's standards.
I can only put this down to her not bothering to train us to let her sleep on the bed and also her inability to starve herself :-)
This book really made me laugh out loud in places. Very cleverly written from a dogs perspective, underneath the humor there is a lot of information on how dogs think, and also where us humans tend to go wrong. The quiz at the end is brilliant. If you love dogs you will thoroughly enjoy this little book.
I have two dogs myself and found this 80 page guide, very witty. This is told from the perspective of a dog.... Funny... and yes, despite being a strict owner, I have found myself doing an odd action told in this guide! 😂
A fantastic and funny read for those who have, are planning to have, or work with our beautiful canines. Looking forward to reading more of Karen Davidson books.
I've got that my dog has me very well trained. She's a shelter dog and of people think these are just worthless dogs. She's me of he sweetest animal on four legs, so I want to make sure she's treated as well as, or better than, some of the pampered princesses other people have. Yep, she has me well trained.
Well apparently my dogs, especially Minnie, had be well trained lol. My family would could have told you this without reading the books. I know someone in my family who went through the food training. I so wanted to call them and read them the Essie, but I don’t think she would find it as funny as I did. The book is told from the dogs point of view and be telling other dogs how to train their humans lol. Priceless!!
Anyone fortunate enough to be owned by a dog will immediately bond with the contents of this book. Brilliant writing captures the canine mind offering the human insight and possibilities to neutralize the "pet-effect" canines will attempt to exercise over their human companions. Delightful, witty a thoroughly delightful tome this is a book to be savored as we smile at the all too familiar picture that is painted with broad strokes and tongue-in-cheek fun.
A clever book written from the perspective of Bob, a West Highland Terrier. Bob shares his tips for training humans and his explanations for all the curious things humans do. You can probably read this in an hour or two.
Food: A short read calls for fast food. Maybe a taco or two.
