Non Non Biyori is a sweet slice-of-life manga about a group of girls of differing ages who attend a tiny (and the only one) class at a rural school. The main protagonist of the girls, Ichijou Hotaru, moves to the countryside when her folks move there for a job. She finds herself so far out in the "boonies" that her school is the aforementioned single, tiny class.
She makes the best of the situation and becomes fast friends with the other three girls, including the six year old one. And this delightful mix of ages and the differences such bring to the table makes the the manga hilarious, as does the typical tropes of mature for her age, small for her age, and so on, that affects the various girls. Hotaru is the "mature for her age" type, Natsumi is the trolling one who is kinda bratty in not taking responsibility for her actions, Komari is the smart one who is self-conscious for being small for her age (the oldest girl there), and Renge is the mature for her age first-grader who is still very young, as her behavior sometimes reminds the others.
The story makes great use of showing how beautiful life in the countryside can be. Yes, the city is awesome and being so far away from many conveniences is annoying to a great degree, but there is a certain beauty to the countryside that can make up for the hassles.
This is just a sweet, fun manga. One I certainly recommend.
Incredibly cute slice-of-life schooldays manga. Only read the first book so far, but I really like it. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Yotsuba&!, Azumanga Daioh, School Rumble, or Nichijou.
Hotaru saw Komari as her cute little sempai. However, at some point this admiration...blossomed into love.
I'm your big sister and I'm the oldest student here! Call me "oneesan" like you should!! Idiot! Jerk!! How dare you!! On your knees!! Apologize to your big sister this instant!! Even if I do that, you still don't look like a real big sister.
A real romance is a moving story of pure, true love. But I wouldn't expect a little girl like you to understand. Gotcha.
I can't believe my cool, sophisticated new dress was totally wasted on Natsumi and Renge...Those two are completely hopeless. Well, at least Hotaru'll get the appeal of this piece of couture...
She looks like she's enjoying it, even though it's so bitter...I guess being a grown-up means liking bitter things.
This story details the majestic tale of Komari Koshigaya, the President of the United States of America, Renge Miyauchi, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Hotaru Ichijō, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Natsumi Koshigaya, the Prime Minister of Canada, as they try to amend a burning, crumpling, and rapidly decaying world.
The story begins in 1939 when France and the UK declare war on Germany (Occupied by Erika Itsumi) in response to Poland getting invaded. Hotaru is concerned about the fate of Europe, as well as the rest of the world in this new war. Renge initially tries to create a truce with Erika, but is unable to negotiate with them. Germany then attempted to invade the soviet union in Operation Barbarossa, but failed. This caused Renge to create an alliance with the Allies.
In 1941 Miho Nishizumi launched an attack on Pearl Harbor in order to cripple the US Pacific Fleet and secure Japan's dominance in the Pacific, allowing for continued imperialism in Asia. (The Soviet Union was invaded shortly before this.) Komari, initially wanting to stay neutral in this war, joins the Allied Forces with the UK, USSR, and Canada Now thirsting for revenge, the USA enters the world war.
As time progressed, The Axis forces, led by Erika Itsumi, the Führer of Deutschland, Miho Nishizumi, the Emperor of Nihon, and the Anchovy, the Duce of Italia, take control of Europe and Asia, In an attempt to conquer the world. They would dehumanize their enemies in order to justify their immoral genocides of populations.
In 1942, Komari sent the US military to Midway Atoll, (which was about 2100 Kilometers from Hawaii) where a pacific battle with Japan took place. Japan attempted to capture Midway and destroy the US Navy. The US had an advantage, being able to decipher the Japanese military codes. Meanwhile, Nihon could not decipher America's secret Navajo code, which would put them at a disadvantage. Japanese naval ships also had large, bright red dots on them, which stood out and made Japanese ships easy targets for the American bomber planes. While the American U.S.S Yunyun would be destroyed, it would serve as a decisive victory for the US. Later that year, the Allies would fight the Axis powers in El Alamein, Africa (its near Egypt). Italy would attempt to invade Egypt and had already captured Libya and wanted to take all of the Middle East. Hotaru would respond by sending the British army, along with assistance from Grease, Poland, and France to stop Anchovies troops. The Axis’s Panzerkampfwagens, Walthers, MP40s, STG44s, MG34s, Lugers, Carcanos, Berettas, and Fiats were no match for the Allies M1911s, M1 Garands, Tommys, M1 Carbines, M1917s, M1919s, Lee Enfeilds, and Jeeps. This was mostly due to Browning.
Many strange weapons would be created, such as the Soviet A40, a flying tank, as well as America's Grease gun, the M3 which, in the words of Brandon Herrera, is described as “an angry metal pipe”. There was also that one Vespa with the rocket launcher mounted on it.
In 1943, following the Allied invasion of Sicily, Anchovy realised that Italy could not win the war and would surrender to the Allies. Erika would be furious over this defeat and would invade and seize control of many parts of Italy. The newly created Italian government would join the Allies and declare war on Germany. Germany would create a puppet regime to allow for Anchovy to continue to hold power over Italy. Also the Jews, Homosexual, Communists, Socialists, Romas, Koreans, Taiwanese, Filipinos, and Chinese were being massacred during this time period by the Axis Powers.
During 1944, Komari, Hotaru, and Natsumi would launch an attack on Normandy, France in an amphibious assault. Renge was fighting Germany in a different part of Europe at this time. The Allies began the attack by sending paratroopers to Omaha beach in the morning of June 6th. Many paratopers did not land in their expected landing spots which would slow down the operation. Later that day, an amphibious assault would occur when the Allies sailed to the Beaches. The Allies would have to plow through German opposition in the form of machine gunners, mines, and explosion magic. They would eventually storm the beach and liberate Paris, France. Erika did not send backup due to many transport bridges being destroyed by the Allies in air raids. The Allies would begin to start taking back Europe from fascist control.
During 1945, the Axis powers would drastically lose their power. The Союз Советских Социалистических Республик would liberate Auswitch, freeing the prisoners and showing the world the war crimes committed by the Axis. Germany burned all their records of what had happened during the concentration camps and Erika and Anchovy fled to Argentina. Germany would surrender to the Allies. Meanwhile, Japan and America were still fighting in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. America had been working on an atomic bomb to win the war. America had been racing to develop an atomic bomb before Germany did. Developed by Steve Oppenheimler, the atomic bomb would “Milk the brain cows” of the fascists and imperialists. Komari ordered an atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in order to force them to finally surrender. A land invasion of Japan had been considered but rejected due to the superior hand to hand combat skills of the Japanese. After dropping the bomb, Miho refused to issue a surrender and wished to continue to fight. Komari ordered the dropping of another bomb, this time on Nagasaki. Miho realised that Japan could no longer fight, considering that they had lost 2,000,000 soldiers and almost all of their military. Miho gave a final speech saying that “The war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage” and finally surrendered.
By the time that the war had ended, the US lost 418,500, the UK lost 470,000, Philippines lost 500,000, Japan lost 3,120,000, Poland lost 5,360,000, Germany lost 5,500,000, China had lost 16,000,000, and the Soviet Union lost 27,000,000. About 17,000,000 had been killed in the Holocaust and 210,000 were killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In total, about 80,000,000 had been killed in World War 2.
In the end of this 16 book series, Komari, who has been president for 5 terms (20 years) now, gave a speech to the United Nations about the moral lesson of World War 2. Komari warned about the dangers of extreme nationalism and authoritarianism as well as the importance of worldwide cooperation during times of conflict. People need to be cautious of propaganda that creates fear and panic while baking problems on certain groups of people. We should always remember what happened during these times and continue to teach people what happened in order to prevent future atrocities from happening. Most importantly, Komari stated that “War is the worst thing that mankind can experience. War involves the innocent lives of people being ended over issues that they had nothing to do with. Furthermore, there is no true winner in war. Only the ones who have lost the least. Countless lives have been lost. Families destroyed. Lives traumatized. All for the idea of serving one country. Of course we do not fight for the sake of fighting, but rather because we believe in protecting what we love.”

Decided to check out these, as this series will be released in English soon. The anime series was nice, and I guess I will be adding this manga to my collection. :) Really fun to see the characters again, this time in paper-format.
While reading the manga series "Yotsuba & !" this series came up as a recommendation. So for me, who already has a large backlog of books...at first, I thought "do I need another series?" But then the idea of FOMO (fear of missing out) convinced me to pick it up and give it a try. I was pleasantly pleased as I feel the recommendation is spot on! This is a "slice of life" series that has the happy and simple feelings of other series and definitely should appeal to the same group that loves Yotsuba & !. This is the story of a group of girls (ages range) who live out in the boonies and live life at a very small school.
This book gives you a beautiful view of countryside as opposed to the suburbs or city life. The age range of the girls (introduced at the beginning of the book) allows for different perspectives along with different levels of innocence and understanding. A very relaxing book to read, and very good if you are looking for a more light-hearted book.
This is an adorable slice of life manga. I don't think there is really going to be a full on story here, but will be more about the lives of these 4 girls who are the only ones (besides an older brother) who go to this school in the countryside. It is funny and cute, which makes it a relaxing read. One issue is, sometimes they forget the brother ? I know the story is about the four of them, but it is like they forget he goes to the school so they don't count him when they are referencing things... I don't know, it was a weird thing. Also, one of the girls potentially likes another girl. While I am all for the character loving whomever they want, manga has a bad tendency to make these things the butt of a joke or a phase to grow out of, so I'm optimistic about what will happen, but feel the need to caution, just in case.
Charming slice of life that isn't just about a group of schoolgirls being friends, but their town being so small that these girls are the only girls in their whole school! They're all of various ages, get up to various shenanigans, it's cute. My favourite chapter was the one where they got outsmarted by a tiny little bunny rabbit.
I love the anime series and recently finished watching all the episodes (two seasons with 12 episodes each). Although the book covers many scenes/events from the anime which I had JUST SEEN, it didn't feel stale and boring at all. It was lots of fun! I've already started reading book 2.
Charming slice of life story about schoolgirls in the boonies (like the booniest of boonies). It’s slow but not plodding and just a fun, lazy day read. Very much enjoyed it.
I guess I wanted this series to be more like Yotsuba&!, but even similar to Lucky Star would have been okay. Instead, the humor didn’t match up for me.
There’s a small group of kids going to this tiny school in an equally tiny town. One of the girls is new, having just moved there. There’s a lot of odd small-farm-town life, with animals, and not a lot of things to keep the kids entertained.
Mostly it was just meh. I didn’t laugh all the way through, only small things here and there did I really like. None of the characters stood out for me. It was okay, but I’ve read better, and I probably won't stick with it.
Welcome to Asahigaoka Branch School. With only five students enrolled and a bus that only comes through every five hours, it might be the smallest and most isolated school in all of Japan. But that doesn't mean that Asahigaoka lacks adventure. Sharing one class with students ranging from first grade to eighth grade is an adventure in and of itself.
There's no real over arching story-line outside of the characters and their relationships. Instead each chapter places the girls in different situations: being the new girl adjusting to the difference of life in a big city vs the country, having a first crush, trying to out-smart a crafty rabbit, and the struggle of trying to relate to each other despite their age differences. It's really a manga about dealing with life and growing up.
03 Nov 2015: Sebenernya lumayan manis (^,,^) dan bacanya santai~
Tapi aku kurang dapet humornya, malah kerasa agak 'maksa' ( >,,<) Agak penasaran juga sih, siapa tau ini cuman kesan vol.1-nya aja... _____________
27 Feb 2018: Taun lalu nyicip vol.2nya karena dapat di lapak (^ ^;) //tapilupaapdet
...daann~ sama sekali tidak bikin makin tertarik ... ahahaa maap (^ ^;)> Lumayan-lah.., tapi ga lucu, ga greget, santai tapi ga menyemburkan 'aura damai' (*sodaranya aura kasih).
Mungkin bakalan dilanjut kalo nemu yang 'mmb' (murah-meriah-bekas) ^^
This manga is a good one but the story is a plain to my liking its not a drama but more like its called a slice of life it very plain and is much like reading the diary of a young japanese girl who writes every detail of what happen throughout her day in a diary. Now if your into this style of manga then your on the about to read a good manga but if your not interested in that style manga then I would not read it
Humor so mild as to be nonexistent. Barakamon, Volume 01 does rural humor so much better and Yotsuba&!, Vol. 01 is light-years ahead in capturing the joy and humor of minor childhood escapades.
If you go into this manga expecting a charming, hilarious slice-of-life series reminiscent of Azumanga Daioh, you're going to be disappointed. The art is great, but the stories a bit lackluster. I enjoyed a couple of the episodic stories - mostly the ones centering around Komori, the eighth grader - but this just doesn't have the heart or humor I'd like.
Cute. Short humorous moments of four girls in a small school in the country. I was looking for a light hearted read, and this provides just that. However, I still have a hard time telling the characters apart. Could simply be my attention span (very short these days).
Not nearly as funny as Yotsuba&! (says "for fans of Yotsuba&!" on the cover), but I guess it operates around the same genre (slice of life/comedy), and at times the story was mildly entertaining.
