An aspiring writer finds herself investigating a dangerous conspiracy to hide the facts regarding abortion and its link to breast cancer.
From Worldcat:
While attending a writers' conference in Washington, D.C., Theodora Russell gets a call from an editor who wants to discuss her proposal. During their meeting, however, Theodora discovers that the editor actually wants Theodore Russell and his latest novel. Before she can correct the misunderstanding, Theodora becomes intrigued by the proposal tossed into her lap--a proposal that links breast cancer with first-pregnancy abortions. Determined to do a very different treatment of the topic, Theo researches the link--only to wind up running for her life.
Christy-Award winner Angela Hunt writes for readers who have learned to expect the unexpected in novels from this versatile author. With nearly six million copies of her books sold worldwide, she is the best-selling author of more than 165 works ranging from picture books (The Tale of Three Trees) to novels.
Now that her two children are grown, Angie and her husband live in Florida with Very Big Dogs (a direct result of watching Turner and Hooch and Sandlot too many times). This affinity for mastiffs has not been without its rewards--one of their dogs was featured on Live with Regis and Kelly as the second-largest canine in America. Their dog received this dubious honor after an all-expenses-paid trip to Manhattan for the dog and the Hunts, complete with VIP air travel and a stretch limo in which they toured New York City.
Afterward, the dog gave out pawtographs at the airport.
Angela admits to being fascinated by animals, medicine, psychology, unexplained phenomena, and “just about everything” except sports. Books, she says, have always shaped her life— in the fifth grade she learned how to flirt from reading Gone with the Wind.
Her books have won the coveted Christy Award, several Angel Awards from Excellence in Media, and the Gold and Silver Medallions from Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year Award. In 2007, her novel The Note was featured as a Christmas movie on the Hallmark channel. Romantic Times Book Club presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, and American Christian Fiction Writers bestowed the same award in 2019.
In 2006, Angela completed her Master of Biblical Studies in Theology degree and completed her second doctorate in 2015. When she’s not home reading or writing, Angie often travels to teach writing workshops at schools and writers’ conferences. And to talk about her dogs, of course.
Enjoyed this book by Hunt but it was not my favorite...perhaps it has been too long between her books. The "issue " propelling the story was unfamiliar..and I will be doing some personal research to clarify--not that I doubt the information but I want to learn more . Certainly interesting and carried the plot and action. The web of the various characters was so complex in the areas involved that relationships were hard to predict. Gives one reason to better understand all that is published as fact and not always verified or without bias of some kind.
Suspenseful page-turner that dares to present disturbing research about abortion and breast cancer (5 stars)
When amateur writer Theodora Russell is mistaken for a famous author and gets his book proposal by mistake, she is intrigued by its content and determined to spread the word about the information she has learned about a link that shows abortion increases the likelihood of breast cancer by 500%. But she soon finds herself caught up in dramatic series of events that cause her to run for her life, because someone in the abortion industry is determined to prevent this controversial research appearing in the public eye.
This face-paced thriller is a suspenseful page-turner, while at the same time exposing a potential truth about abortion that many today would like to see covered up. This is a better read than some of the medical thrillers by Christian author William Cutrer.
I have read most of Angela's books and all of them are well written, and once you start getting the story, they are very hard to put down until you actually finish them. She also does remarkable research for all of her stories, and this particular one was quite the eye opener on what has been going on in the realm of fetal research, etc.
This novel comes with unique insight into the "family planning" industry, dependable information set down by an excellent researcher. But it's done in such a fascinating way, with so many twists in the novel, that it keeps the reader guessing from one page to the next. If you like murder mysteries and suspense, you will want to read this book.
SUMMARY: The Proposal is a pulse-pounding thriller about a rarely discussed women’s medical issue from one of America’s most prolific novelists. It begins with a foolish error. While attending a writers' conference in Washington, D.C., Theodora Russell gets a call from an editor who wants to discuss her book proposal. During their meeting, however, Theo quickly discovers that the editor actually wanted to meet with Theodore Russell and talk about his book proposal. Before Theodora can correct the misunderstanding, she becomes intrigued by Theodore’s proposal. It’s for a book that links breast cancer with first-pregnancy abortions. Determined to do a very different treatment of the topic, Theo researches the link—only to wind up running for her life.
REVIEW: Angela Hunt has once again penned a thriller that keeps your attention from start to finish. I especially liked the basis for this thriller, the abortion-breast cancer link, as I have read quite a bit of information on this topic. It is a hot-button topic and one the author was not afraid to center her book upon. The author has done good research and presents her information within the fictional context quite well. I did feel some of the things that Theo did were a bit unrealistic for a middle-class woman from the suburbs but that does often come with the territory in thrillers and mysteries. Detective Datsko was an interesting character as well and Dr. Holman made an interesting partner in Theo's adventure.
FAVORITE QUOTE: "This generation is literally consuming its offspring. We are harvesting the next generation for spare parts, taking tissues for the elderly from the youngest and most innocent lives. We have gone as far as we can go, Theo. We have reduced life to nothing more than matter for manipulation. Death has become a solution for social problems."
Excellent fast paced story about 2 authors with similar names that get confused with each other. One, Theodore, has proposed a book using research linking breast cancer & abortions. The other, Theodora, signs into an Author's convention & gets a call from a publisher looking to publish Theodore's book...then he disappears!
References to the studies referred to in the book are included.
I like the last paragraph of the Afterward:
"Abortion is the single most avaoidable known risk factor for breast cancer. Angela Hunt has performed a remarkable service for women everywhere by revealing what they need and have a right to know.
Joel Brind, Ph.D., Professor of Biology and Endocrinology"
If you want the stats on breast cancer & abortion this is an entertaining way to get them without reading all the studies. If you don't believe them, it's still a great read!
Yes, another Angela Hunt book. This one kind of reminded me of some of John Grisham's early stuff. An aspiring writer accidentally ends up with another author's proposal which contains information that is very controversial, and before she knows it, her life is in danger. Really liked it...I had trouble putting it down at times. The end was a little unbelieveable, but still a good book.
What a theory....very interesting subject matter- character stumbles upon a book proposal discussing a (fictional) link between breast cancer and first-time abortions... the writing was good, not her best work, but still a great read.
I enjoy Hunt's books in the world of Christian fiction. She avoids the trite and writes in a manner that is engaging, intriguing and keeps me reading. I would compare her writing to that of Ted Dekker or Frank Peretti. A good read to get you thinking.
Love the characters and the suspense in the book, and the fact that it took a topic certainly controversial in 1996, and that is still controversial today, and it was all weaved into a tale of right verses wrong, love verses hate, and so much more...I would definitely recomend this book!!!
Great compelling writing, subject matter stolen from today's headlines. Hunt weaves facts and scientific data into her storyline that leaves the reader smarter, more informed and entertained. The breast cancer/abortion link needs to make headlines again.
