Bestselling cartoonist Jim Benton of It's Happy Bunny and Dear Dumb Diary fame has also been posting whimsical, dry-humored, and at-times nasty cartoons on Reddit.com, where more than a third of the top-100 cartoons on the "Cartoons" subreddit are his. Now, for the first time, these cartoons have been gathered into a single book. From wry observations about the absurdities of life and acerbic comments to poetic musings, from cats and dogs to humans, and from one style to another, this compendium will astound readers as it exposes them to the breadth of Benton's seemingly inexhaustible talent for humor.
Benton began his career in a custom design t-shirt shop where he started designing his own characters. At the same time, Jim did illustrations and artwork for magazines and newspapers. People magazine named him "the most visible cartoonist in America" .
Benton also created greeting cards and worked in the magazine and publishing industry. In 1998, his SpyDogs characters became an animated series, The Secret Files of the Spy Dogs, that aired on Fox Kids. Licensing his own creations brought them widespread attention on products, such as It's Happy Bunny, The Misters, Just Jimmy and more.
Benton currently lives in Michigan, where he operates out of his own studio.
I was teaching the ultimate heavy, The Sandman, which has gravitas and is so challenging, and I passed around this book as a kind of antidote, a sort of comic relief for all the hard work we were doing in trying to figure out the Gaiman series, and people were snorting and giggling as it passed around the room. I say that in all fairness, because when I read it, I almost never laughed aloud. I smiled a few times, okay, but I did not think this was all the great, personally.
You can tell that these cartoons were created on an ongoing basis for the web--the quality is, granted, mixed. Still, the ones that are good are hilarious. Jim Benton has a great skeptic's eye for life, and clearly has the drawing chops to back up his ideas. A good, quick, amusing read.
A disjointed collection of humorous comics by Jim Benton, there were some funnies, some not so much. From the cover I thought it would be more about dogs with some cats-nope. The book was very slim- I bet you can easily find plenty of his comics online.
A collection of cartoons by New York Times Bestseller Jim Benton. Though the title implies lots of pet or animal cartoons there are only a few. Personally I found the humor hit or miss.
I know Jim Benton from his extremely funny children's books, including the Dear Dumb Diary and the Franny K. Stein series, but this is a collection of his web cartoons for grown-ups, and it is very, very funny, and kind of sick, too. It made me laugh and will probably make you laugh, too! Here's one of my favorites! http://www.jimbenton.com/page14/files...
Absurd, snarky, & often heartwarming comics (originally published on reddit). Benton has the great ability to draw in a wide variety of styles, which keeps the humor fresh.
this was a super fun quick and easy read. it was observational humor and totally hilarious. I absolutely giggled multiple times. good for an uplifting spirit
