திருவரங்கன் உலா என்பது முகம்மதுபின் துக்ளக் திருவரங்கத்தினை படையெடுத்து கொள்ளையடித்த வரலாற்று உண்மை சம்பவத்தினை அடிப்படையாக் கொண்டு ஸ்ரீவேணுகோபாலன் என்பவர் எழுதிய நாவலாகும். நாவலின் முதல் பாகம் திருவரங்கன் உலா என்றும், இரண்டாம் பாகம் மதுரா விஜயம் என்றும் வெளிவந்துள்ளது. இசுலாமிய படையெடுப்பில் கொள்ளையடிக்கப்படாமல் காக்க அரங்கநாதரின் உற்சவர் சிலையை வைணவர்கள் பல்வேறு இடங்களுக்கு கொண்டு சென்று பாதுகாத்தனர். இவ்வாறு, திருவரங்கத்திலிருந்து சென்ற அரங்கனின் சிலை மீண்டும் திருவரங்கத்தினை அடைந்ததை திருவரங்கன் உலா என்று நாவலுக்குப் பெயரி்டடுள்ளார்.

இசுலாமிய படையெடுப்பும் கொள்ளையும்

கி.பி.1325-1351 முகம்மதுபின் துக்ளக் திருவரங்கத்தில் உள்ள ரங்கநாதரின் கோவிலை இக்கொள்ளையிட முனைந்தான். பெரும்படையை எதிர்த்து கோவிலையும், கோவிலுள் உள்ள சிலைகள், ஆபரனங்கள் போன்றவற்றையும் காக்க திருவரங்க நகர மக்களும், ஆச்சாரியர்களும், தேவதாசிகளும் போராடினார்கள். நகர வாசிகள் ஆயுதமேந்தி போராடியதாகவும், தேவதாசிகள் இசுலாமிய படையினரை மயக்கி போராடியதாகவும் கருத்துண்டு. இப்போரில் பல வைணவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள்.

உற்சவர் சிலை பாதுகாத்தல்

இசுலாமியர்களிடமிருந்து காக்க திருவரங்கத்தினை விட்டு பிற இடங்களுக்கு விலையுயர்ந்த ஆபரணங்கள், விக்ரகங்கள் போன்றவற்றை கொண்டு சென்று மறைத்தார்கள். உற்சவப் பெருமாளை திருக்கோட்டியூர், காளையார் கோவில், அழகர் மலை என்று பல இடங்களில் பதுக்கி வைத்திருந்து, இறுதியில் திருப்பதியில் பல காலம் பாதுகாப்பாக வைத்துள்ளார்கள். பின் கி.பி. 1371ல் உற்சவர் விக்ரகம் திருவரங்கத்திற்கு கொண்டுவரப்பெற்றது.

Sri Venugopalan, whose literary craftsmanship allowed him to straddle two genres — serious literature and popular fiction under the name Pushpa Thangadurai

A native of Kizhanatham village in Tirunelveli district, he worked briefly with the postal department, before resigning to become a full-time writer.

He was prolific and penned everything, from short stories and novels to essays, television serials and plays.

His novel ‘Oru Oothappu Kanchimitukirath’ was made into a film, and two of his songs, ‘Andavan Illa Ulagam Yethu’ and ‘Nalla Manam Vaazhga,’ with music scored by Dakshinamurthy, became unforgettable melodies for many fans. A voracious reader with an avid passion for astronomy, Sri Venugopalan’s collection of books was a bibliophile’s envy.

If the name Sri Venugopalan and his novels, including ‘Nee En Nila’, ‘Nanda En Nila’, ‘Thiruvarangan Ula’ and ‘Madura Vijayam,’ appealed to lovers of serious literature and received appreciation from no less than a person like late critic and writer C.S. Chellappa, the pen name Puspha Thangadurai struck a chord with the common man.

“‘Thiruvarangan Ula’ was so popular, the Vaishnavites in Srirangam honoured him by taking him in procession on an elephant,” said Tirupur Krishnan, editor of Tamil literary magazine ‘Amudhasurabhi’

எவ்வளவு நாள் தான் சோழர், பாண்டியர் பற்றியே படித்து கொண்டிருப்பது. ஒரு மாற்றத்திற்கு படிப்போமே என்று படிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன்.

வரலாற்று புதினங்கள் என்றாலே இளவரசன், அரசன், படைத்தலைவன் என்று படித்து சலித்து போன எவருக்கும் இந்த புத்தகம் ஒரு நல்ல மாறுதலாக இருக்கும்.

திருவரங்கம் கோவிலை இடிக்க வரும் டில்லி படைகள். கோவிலின் செல்வங்களையும் விக்கிரகங்களையும் பாதுகாக்க முனைகிறது ஒரு கூட்டம்.

என்ன ஆயிற்று என்று சுவாரசியமாக கூற முயற்சி செய்து இருக்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். ஆனால் ஆங்காங்கே வைணவ சம்பிரதாயங்கள் மற்றும் சொற்கள் சிற்சில குழப்பங்களை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. ஒரே மாதிரியான கதை சம்பவங்கள் சற்றே அலுக்க வைக்கிறது.

The story follows the trials and tribulations faced by Sri Ranganatha Swamy and his devotees at a time when invasion from Delhi was prevalent in South India. The story shows the beliefs that people had during that time and how people protected the Lord by giving their lives without being religious or preachy! I had anticipated a few miracles from the Lord, and surprisingly, the book never deviated from logic. The book has the right dose of heroism, suffering, and love and is a great addition to the historical fiction genre based on South India.

A must read novel about Srirangam and it's invasion. At various places it gave me tears and throughout the novel it's very gripping. It just transports us to the era of incidents and we can able to visualise the events that takes place. The icing on the cake here is the characters in the novel were real as well as fiction and we can easily get among them.The author has beautifully handled war sequences, Romance . I believe this is a Magnum Opus along with ponniyin Selvan or even above that as the sacrifice of people here touched our hearts and make us cry at various places.
