About the author

Yves Sente was born in Brussels in 1964. When he was little, he read La Marque Jaune, Jacobs' masterpiece, over and over again. Little did he know at that age that The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer would determine his destiny...!
In 1998, while he was working for Le Lombard, he worked with the cartoonist André Juillard on the script of La machination Voronov, a new episode of the Blake and Mortimer, a Cold War story acclaimed by critics and the public. Yves Sente then went on to write Les Sarcophages du 6e continent, where he reveals the young life of Professor Mortimer. He confirmed his writing talents with La Vengeance du Comte Skarbek (Dargaud; The Revenge of Count Skarbek, Europe Comics) and then Thorgal (Le Lombard; Cinebook/Europe Comics in English), taking over for Jean Van Hamme alongside Rosinski.

After these Mayflower Compact people put on a brutal display of what they are willing to do, XIII agrees to work for them. We Finally find out what they are after and in the true fashion of this comic, it's overly complicated. Something about a contract made 400 years ago between 2 different parties that came over in the Mayflower. Meanwhile, Betty is doing all the real work to find out where Fly was disappearing to each month back when he lived in Green Falls. I've had about enough of these insanely complicated backstories, but since I'm almost caught up, I'll stick through it.

Wow, un vrai retour aux sources comme le titre le laisse entendre. J’ai particulièrement aimé l’implication de Betty, ceux qui aiment ce personnage vont vraiment apprécier. Les retours vers le premier cycle sont bien intégrés et suivent le cours de l’histoire sans donner l’impression de simplement revisiter le passé. Ça ajoute de la profondeur tout en restant fluide. J’ai aussi été surpris par certains éléments, ce qui faisait du bien après quelques tomes plus prévisibles. Un excellent tome, très agréable à lire.

Palasin pitkästä aikaa XIII-sarjakuvan maailmaan. Juoni Mayflower-laivan aikaisine salaliittoineen (jonka merkitys nykyään on ???) on lennokas ja melko älyvapaa, mutta piirrosjälki on edelleen hyvin nättiä. Käsikirjoittaja on Yves Sente (s. 1964) ja piirtäjä belgianvenäjäinen Juri Jigunov (s. 1967), jotka ottivat XIII-sarjan hoitaakseen vuonna 2011. Vaikka Sente on nuorena opiskellut jonkin aikaa Yhdysvalloissa, Amerikka-tulkinnassa on tiettyä mangamaista vieraantuneisuutta, mutta mitäpä siitä niin kauan kuin vauhtia ja vaarallisia tilanteita riittää.

Trapped in Afghanistan, and seemingly outmanoeuvred and manipulated by unknown forces, our small band of heroes are held captive between a strange alliance between some renegade US officers and the Taliban. After a brutal display of just how far their keepers are willing to go to secure compliance, Jason, or XIII, consents to being smuggled back in to the US.

The only wild card at present appears to be Betty, rooting around in San Francisco for a lead from an old acquaintance of Jason. Unfortunately, despite her SPAD training giving her an edge, Betty’s being tracked via her credit card. Meanwhile Jason is forced to undergo a further memory-recovering procedure, but not before he’s told of his family’s part in a historical pact made with the Pilgrim Fathers. Unknowingly for Jason, the regression reveals enough to force him onto a collision course with Betty.

As a writer, Van Hamme must be one of the toughest acts to follow, and yet Sente keeps the plot thrumming and mystery turning that upholds the spirit of the original books. The plot, with its tendrils reaching so far back in time, is legitimised by the basic instincts of greed and self-preservation, balancing the fanciful with a hunger for power and control, and all the time further fleshing out the awkward childhood and troubled adulthood of the man who becomes XIII.

Also, a tip of the hat to Jigounov who has taken over the art duties on the XIII series. He does a remarkable job of mirroring Vance’s style and layouts to be almost seamless. A different art style would most certainly have made these new books feel like a separate series rather than the fluid continuation that they’ve become.

Pfoe, 48 pagina's tjokvol infodumps, lijkt het wel. En dan kan je wel zeggen "show don't tell", maar ik vrees dat het dan niet veel duidelijker zou zijn geweest, ook al zouden er honderd pagina's worden besteed aan de geschiedenis die hier wordt verteld.

Om maar te zeggen: de geschiedenis van XIII wordt er niet realistischer op, nu zijn bloedlijn blijkt terug te gaan tot de kolonisatie van Amerika. Deze strip begint met een halve pagina die samenvat "wat in de vorige twee albums gebeurde"; ik vraag me af hoeveel ze nodig gaan hebben in het volgende album.

Kortom: enkel voor hardcore XIII-fans die een masochistische drang hebben om te zien wat voor idioot ingewikkelde verhaallijnen er kunnen blijven verzonnen worden rond dit personage.
