The New Inductive Study

Walking in Power, Love, and Discipline: 1 And 2 Timothy and Titus

Rate this book
Kay Arthur’s newest addition to the International Inductive Study Series (more than 600,000 copies in print) takes an in–depth look at the books of 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. Paul’s letter to two young church leaders provides rich insights into how we can keep our faith strong in a world troubled by the snares of the evil one and the temptations of the flesh. Just as he instructs Timothy to “guard the treasure,” so Paul reveals to us how to live a life of unflinching commitment to the gospel and how to share that belief with others. Though these inductive studies only require about 15 minutes a day, those who do them will reap a lifetime of benefits in understanding God’s Word.

Kay Lee Arthur was an American Christian author, Bible teacher, and co-founder of Precept Ministries International. Renowned for her accessible and inductive approach to Bible study, she helped millions engage deeply with Scripture. Arthur began her ministry informally, teaching teenagers in her living room alongside her second husband, Jack Arthur. Their work soon grew into a global outreach, headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, under the name Precept Ministries International. She hosted the daily Bible teaching program Precepts for Life and became a respected voice in evangelical circles. Arthur authored numerous books and was a four-time winner of the ECPA Christian Book Award for titles such as A Marriage Without Regrets and The New Inductive Study Bible. Her ministry was rooted in a personal reawakening to faith in the early 1960s, following a divorce and a return to religious life. She and Jack also served briefly as missionaries in Mexico before founding their ministry. Arthur remained active in public faith-based initiatives into her later years and was known for her firm stances on social issues. She passed away on 2025 leaving behind a lasting legacy in Christian education and publishing.

4.5 stars, rounded up

I very much enjoyed my time in this guide, and find it to be one of the stronger in the series along with all those on the prophecy Books. Parts felt a bit repetitive, but the cross-referencing, insights into the Greek and into the lives of Paul, Timothy and Titus were all valuable to a deeper understanding of each of these Books.

Loved going through this simple, guided study. It encourages you to dig into the truths of scripture and discover the meaning and God's purpose behind the words, rather than relying on someone else to give you their interpretation and 'take' on it. I have a much greater understanding of how scripture applies to my life.

In this particular study, I had a few, important "aha" revelations for my faith walk. Particularly that righteousness and godliness is something that must be pursued. It doesn't come naturally or through some prayerful automatic pilot. I must work on it and actively pursue it. There were a few others, but following the lead of Kay Arthur and her co-authors, it is better to let you discover those for yourself.

Be aware this is not a passive study. Read the "How To Get Started" chapter and take it to heart. It may seem unusual to mark your Bible with colors and special markings, but just try it. Get a composition notebook to accompany this book and dive in.

Another excellent entry in the New Inductive Study series. How can you not grow in wisdom and understanding after spending 13 weeks studying just nine pages of the Bible? I know some people find the inductive Bible study method tedious because it requires reading, re-reading and list making. But with all the distractions our online world offers and because of our growing inability to really pay attention, I find the inductive method the perfect antidote for lazy Bible reading. It keeps you digging until you find gold. (I’m not ignoring the fact that the Holy Spirit is the one who reveals truth, but just saying that we have to be willing to sit quietly long enough to hear his voice.)

This book covers the pastoral epistles of I and II Timothy and Titus. I appreciated seeing the heart of Paul toward these men and towards their congregations. And I probably would not have noticed the similar themes in all the letters if not for the IBS method.

Used it for a ladies bible study. Great guide, especially when ladies are not used to studying the Word by themselves.

Not really sure how to rate this, but it was great because it helped me read and understand my bible more!

It gives really helpful advice for how to study 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus on your own. I actually felt like I could study and understand the bible on my own without having to refer to outside sources, which is amazing.

All in all, I learned a lot. I didn't follow the list/marking advice, but even without it I was able to deepen my understanding of the word and grow in my relationship with God!!!

I am not sure whether to call this 2 stars or 4 stars (I will explain!). My Sunday School class chose this book to study.....with my being the only one familiar with Kay Arthur's work I explained that much work was required, but if you put in the work diligently and faithfully, you would reap those rewards...but you will only get out of it, what you are willing to put into it!

I would call it 4 stars, in the regards, that her inductive bible studies (and method) always give me a better understanding of the scriptures as well as a closer walk with God that I crave!

I would call it 2 stars in the light that while a great personal study, the questions (at least in the case of my group), did not seem to lend themselves to lively or deep discussion....some of that may be due to the lack of commitment shown by many in my group....where most admittedly did not do the work consistently.

Highly recommend....but be prepared, to invest deeply to reap the rewards.

This is my third precept study to do of hers, and I absolutely love them. It makes me love The Word and really understand the context, meanings and emphasis of the scriptures. The little tasks and note taking are fun for me and make me slow down to really understand what I am reading rather than skimming. The repetition of reading the same scripture over and over and pulling out different parts make it stick. The leading questions make me examine myself in light of scripture, without the author putting themselves in it and telling us what to think. If you want an inspirational book, this is not it. This is a dry study of the Word of God, but led in such a way that makes it rich and juicy if you stick to it!
