Lords of Rathe #1

Fate of a Royal

Rate this book
“You will go to Rathe University, live among the giftless and those of light magic. You, Knight Deveraux, will learn to coexist.” I’ve never heard more wasted words in my life. Then again, the gifted counsel never did have much to say that wasn’t. The only members amongst them who speak a thing worth listening to are my parents, the King and Queen of the Stygian’s, the people of Dark Magic. Unfortunately for me and my brothers, they’ve chosen to play nice instead of sinking their talons into anyone who dares demand a thing from their heirs. In this instance at least. Every gifted is forced to leave our realm behind after graduation to spend the next four years in a world that isn’t ours, while pretending it’s enough for those with something deeper clawing beneath their skin. It isn’t. Not by a long shot, and while it’s as boring as I thought it would be, we find ways to entertain ourselves. A little Fae Dust, the power of persuasion, and it’s a party worthy of a royal … or four. That was fun the first year, but it’s my second now, and the minute I got back to campus, I knew it would be worse than before. I felt it, that pull buried beneath my skin, the whisper of a warning deep in my mind I could hear but couldn’t reach. It starts with a human party and ends with a nightmare. A five foot, white haired one. With eyes like ice and a body begging to be bitten, she’s a problem. A giftless one. That’s right, she’s human. Worthless. And if the shadow circling my soul is telling me what I think it is … she belongs to it. My new obsession … is my fated mate. But there is no way the fates would give me, a Lord of Rathe, a heir to the throne of dark magic, a giftless girl. I’ll prove they got it wrong. That she’s not mine. If I’m lucky, I’ll destroy her in the process.

So yeah, let's chat...

I really wanted to like this one—especially since I’m a fan of both authors—but it just didn’t do it for me. There was a lot of potential, but most of it felt missed. The ending, even though it had a cliffhanger, felt rushed and kind of random.

There were so many parts that seemed like they were building up to something big (maybe for book two?), but instead they just left me confused. Characters are introduced and then disappear, and the whole hockey thing? That just fizzled out with no real point.

My biggest issue was the lack of character development. We’re told Ben and London are best friends, but we never really see why. There’s no real connection shown, so when big things happen between them, they don’t hit the way they should. I think they were trying to set up a strong love story, but it didn’t feel believable.

Honestly, I almost didn’t finish. I found myself skipping through pages because a lot of the dialogue felt drawn out or kind of pointless. And I don’t remember it being promoted as part of a series—if I’d known the story wasn’t complete, I probably would’ve waited to read it.

That said, I’ll still read book two, just to see if it helps make sense of everything. But right now, I’m not a fan. Two stars feels kind of generous.

DNFd at 44% because these are just words on a page that form no actual solid plotline or enjoyable story. If i wasn't buddy reading this, I'd be questioning if I'd had a stroke. You can't just introduce magic dust and blood suckers and call it Paranormal. None of this made any sense and the spice didn't even spice. So disappointing.

London and Knight repeatedly cross paths and each time, their attraction intensifies. The problem? Knight Deveraux is a Lord of Rathe, heir to the throne of Dark Magic. London is a giftless.

I absolutely loved watching the evolution of Knight’s feelings as he fought his attraction to London and denied fate’s path. My heart hurt for London as she seemed so lost in the human world. And I ultimately felt gobsmacked as the Wicked duo blew everything TF up. I mean… Who is… What was… When do… Where are… How will… Why…

⭐️⭐️

Okay… I don’t usually post reviews of books I really didn’t like…. But I have too many thoughts and feelings to not do this one. So buckle up… it’s gonna be a rocky ride. 🙈
First off, let me just say… I absolutely LOVE Amo Jones and Meagan Brandy’s other books (besides The Deal Dilemma…. But that’s a whoooooole other topic). Noah Riley was the first fictional boy I fell head over heels for. And Amo is known to blow your mind with her twists and turns. But this one…. Hard pass.

I honestly think I was just expecting a whole different story from these two then what we got. Which was a train wreck of book. It was all Amo and no Meagan. No emotions were involved at all. I had to reread sentences multiple times cause I honestly had no idea what was happening. And I still don’t. I felt like it was all over the place and just messy and made zero sense. The world building wasn’t very well thought out and overly complicated. It really felt like they just threw this together as fast as they could to get it out there, instead of taking their time to make it something that was truly good.

And can someone tell me why hockey was involved?? It gave no purpose to the story line at all. It’s like they just threw it in cause that’s what’s popular in the book world. And that just annoyed me. Every scene was either a party scene or a sex scene with a little plot sprinkled in. No character depth at all. All I learned about the FMC is that she likes drugs. And a lot of them. I had no connection at all with any of the characters and really couldn’t tell you much about any of them. And don’t get me started on all the brothers names… they were just bad.

The last maybe like 10% was interesting and made me wanna read the next book, which I didn’t even know this was a continuing series til then, but I’m in no hurry to. And even then, I might just be happy if someone cliffnotes it for me. Overall, I was so crazy excited about this one and I felt so incredibly let down. If you loved it, I’m happy for you… and maybe you can explain it to me cause I’m still clueless over here. 😂

World building was horrible. Couldn’t get past the first 4 chapters and found myself skimming over way too long dialogue.

What in the world is this ?

description

It's like the authors selected some random cuss words like "fuck" / "shit" and built a whole story exclusively around that. I'm pretty sure they scribbled "ass" on a piece of paper then sprinkled it with a bunch of clichés and that was enough slaying for the day 😍. I mean seriously, around 80% of the words used were cuss words, the book felt like a profanity dictionary titled "from the 1800s to today".

The writing is the cringiest hardest thing i've laid my eyes on. I had to re-read sentences over and over again just to make sense of them because "fuck" and "cock" kept popping up like unexpected speed bumps. Let me give you a taste of how terrible it was by presenting a simple sentence of me ordering pizza, but in the authors' style : Fuck, hel-fucking-lo, can i fucking get a cock pizza with a fucking shitty side of ass fries ???? like please be frrrrr.

The plot is what it is (bad).

In conclusion, my day is ruined thank you babes 💖😘.

A PNR dark romance, with bully vibes and an over-the-top possessive hero!?!?! Ugh I am done for.
The Tension and connection between the hero and the heroine, is some of the best I've read in a long time. I Love the way the characters fight their feelings, both internally and externally. The inner thoughts from Knight had me swooning because he's honestly my type of hero. Our Heroine is strong, confident and sassy. She's equally as reckless as our hero, to me they are equals. They are both flawed and broken in their own ways, which just adds to the overall angst and mystery of the story.

Amo and Meagan both did a fantastic job at giving each character their own unique personality, the transition between both Knight and London, helped progress the story in a realistic way, because each of their voices was different. I really feel like both authors fed off of each other, by the way they each added their signature styles to the characters, both authors complement each other, which in my opinion has made this a top read for me. It's a story we do not get all the answers to, but its captivating and provocative. I found myself thinking about them the minute I was forced to put the book down. I am still thinking about these two days later.

My goal was to write this review with as little spoilers as possible, and honestly this book is a feeling it's a vibe, it's something you need to experience for yourself. I am so excited for what's to come, because I have a feeling this is just the beginning, because that ending had me shocked.

***4,5 "My plaything!!!" stars***

“What if I said I wanted to play with the devil, if only to see how bad it would burn?”
“Then I would say you're pretty fucking close to getting what you wish for.”

As a big fan of both Amo Jones and Meagan Brandy's stories, when I heard that they joined forces and in a dark, paranormal story, I lost my mind!!! I knew I needed to read this story and this duo delivered to the fullest!!!
This story had paranormal elements, a fated bond that was questioned a lot, enemies to lovers and some bully vibes... What else a girl like me could ask for???
Also, it had a crazy and possessive hero, a heroine with backbone that wasn't backing down in any challenge and three hot royal brothers that I am wishing for their own stories at some point!!!!
Unfortunately, it had a huge cliffy that left me panting for more...

"Gonna break you, little London."

London was kind of lost... Her life felt hollow and she didn't know what to do with it.... She joined college, just to be closer to her best friend, the only person that meant something in her life...
And then, she started seeing things that no normal person could see and she thought she was losing her mind...
Enter mysterious and out of this world handsome Knight and his equally hot brothers and something is starting to change inside of her....
Is this real or she is trapped into a strange nightmare???

"What kind of monster are you, Knight?"

Knight was bored that he had to live among giftless people because he was forced to... He was part of royalty and he hated that he had to supress his powers and feelings in order to blend with the ordinary...
And then London catches his eyes and a bond is starting to form with a giftless girl and he couldn't accept that fate could be so cruel to him...
So, he fought it with tooth and nails, but he was drown to this girl like a moth to the flame...
Can she be really his mate, or is she hiding something???

"This girl? This Giftless girl is not fucking mine.
She's nothing but a toy. A worthless plaything."

I loved this couple very much...
There was darkness between them and an intensity that could melt your kindle...
I liked how possessive Knight was of London and I liked his intensity while he was trying to fight his feelings...
I also liked how strongwilled London was!!! She was holding her ground no matter what...
Their story was intriguing, full of lust, and it was holding too many secrets...
And after this ending, I am really wondering how their story will be played out cause things went to shit very quickly!!!

"London's bridge is falling down..."

I love this new dark and different world that this duo of authors had created in here!!!
I love them individually, but together they are a new kind of fire and I love that they joined forces and gifted us with this story...
And honestly, I can not wait for more of Knight and London, but I am also praying that we will receive stories about Creed, Sinner and Legend as well, cause they have intrigued me sooo much!!!
If you love these authors and you are hesitating because of the paranormal element, please don't you worry, just buckle up and enjoy the ride!!! Trust me!!!

"And so the first one falls..."

this was written by a 14 year old girl and i’ve never been so certain of anything in my life. I couldn’t make it past page 100. didn’t finish this. sorry. the mmc is literally an angsty little boy who probably drinks monster energy drinks and screams at his mom to get out of his room. i could maybe relate to this if i was 15, in my emo phase, and just discovered swearing.

and don’t even get me started on all the brothers names. you’re telling me these people named one of their sons Legend and the other one got the name Sinner???? lmfaoooo give me a break.

Where do I even begin with this book.
I want it to love it so much because I love both authors bu t I just simply couldn't pass the fact that this book was poorly written.
I was so dissapointed with the writing style and it is so weird cause I really like Meagan's way of writing and I love Amo too. I don't know what happen with this book.
Will I read the next book of this series? Probably. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. But I won't go with high expectations.

First, I must preface my review by stating that I rarely read paranormal romance because it’s generally not my thing. However, I’m an avid fan of Meagan Brandy’s writing and have wanted to meet Amo Jones work for too many years. Before diving in… I just have to say: What in the fresh hell did I read and when can I have more?!? This book … just WOW!!! It dared me to dislike it … like I even could. I was basically held hostage, unable to put this hypnotic tale down. Fate of a Royal is unyielding and unrelenting … and oh my was I slayed!

Dearest readers, I won’t and can’t say much about the plot, a tale that I’m still trying to wrap my head around days later. Prepare to go on the enchanting and death-defying adventure of a lifetime with these fated mates as you encounter one surprise or shock after another. I was addicted to this paranormal delight starring a strong heroine, London, who I admired and the hottest anti-hero, Knight, who can stalk me anytime.

Plot twist … or not: The non-paranormal romance girl fell for Fate of a Royal that’s uniquely incredible and simply magical. I had no choice but to succumb to this extraordinary story of fated mates, alternate realms, twists and turns, and all the feels. It twists and taints and teases and takes. Fate of a Royal is thrilling, tenacious, and TERRIFYINGLY BEAUTIFUL. IT’S EVERYTHING!

I can’t wait to see how this complex saga unfolds … especially after the maddening ending that had me ready to go to war with my kindle. This dynamic author duo has crafted an utterly brilliant and breathless book that blew me away. Fate of a Royal is easily a top 2023 read. I’m aching for more.

💋💋💋💋💋💋 bloody brilliant kisses

OMG MAGNIFICENT!!!! These two together bring magic to the pages and I am definitely here for it! I don’t know what to even say I am in awe of how seamlessly these two write together I love that we get both Amo’s and Meagan’s writing style in this story but together they are a powerhouse! It’s sexy it’s full of twists and turns and I am obsessed with this new world and characters they’ve created and that cliffhanger ending has me spinning! Can’t wait for the next book!

TikTok made me do it. TikTok is wrong. This book clearly didn’t have an editor and the writing is pretty shaky. It’s weirdly paced and just overall hard to follow. The spice was there and fine, but that’s the only thing fine about the book.
Definitely don’t recommend.

Wow, wow, wow! I am blown away by this book. I did not want it to end. The magic of words that Amo and Meagan created pulled me in early on and didn’t let go! I am obsessed with this world!

London (giftless) is leading a mundane life at university with her best friend Ben. She’s followed him there, having no direction in her own life. She starts to see and question things that are happening around her but puts it down to her recreational uses. She then meets Knight, someone she shares a bond with but can’t explain why, especially since she hates him.

Knight is a hero with a mix of arrogance, dominance and swagger that I love. He’s on Earth to attend Rathe University with his brothers and mix with the giftless. What he’s not expecting is for fate to twist his future and set its sights on his eternal mate, someone who can’t be as she’s giftless. No matter how hard he tries to fight it and deny it, she is his.

Knight fights the deep need to be around her and hates her for the pull he has to her when she doesn’t seem to feel the same. Hoping to f**k his desire out on her, he kidnaps her, bringing her to his world when a threat looms, needing for her to be close and under his watchful eye.

When I saw I only had 10% to go, I had forgotten this book was going to end on a cliffhanger as I was so engrossed in the story. I knew the next part of the story was going to bring in all the twists and turns and leave us hanging for more.

I loved that there were elements of both Amo and Meagan’s writing style but what I loved was how seamlessly they fitted together, the light and the dark. This world they have created is mind blown. I know fans of both authors are going to lose their minds with the story and I’m dying for more of them already!

A top read of 2023!

“The sky is the villain to every story I’ve ever read.”

“There were no butterflies in my belly from that kiss because he slaughtered every single one of them with a flick of his tongue.”

When I found out that Meagan Brandy and Amo Jones were writing a book together, I didn’t even think twice, I knew I had to read it.

Fate of a Royal starts off a bit slow as it’s got an extraordinary world/tale to build. The reader of the story goes in blind, just as the lead character London does, with every moment and every interaction leaving you with so many questions. This story will suck you in and consume you as you try to unravel the web of mystery these two brilliant authors have laid before you. Nothing about this book is as it seems.

Fate of a Royal will take readers on one heck of a ride with its spellbinding writing and intriguing characters. This story is filled with steam and intrigue, fated mates, and an unexpected twist that will leave readers reeling and begging to get their hands on the next book asap….

I have never done any kind of recreational drugs in my life but I assume the effect would be like what I felt while reading Fate of a Royal by Meagan Brandy and Amo Jones. IT WAS SUCH A TRIP. I was in a dreamy spicy angsty haze throughout this book and when it ended and reality came crashing in, I threw my kindle and screamed because I need more Knight and London ASAP. This was dark fantasy, rejected mates, enemies to lovers, new adult and just everything awesome rolled in together. Created by two evil masterminds, Fate of a Royal is exactly the kind of mindblowing beauty I expected from Amo and Meagan but it still destroyed me..because, let's accept it, these two geniuses never stop delivering epic stories.

Knight Deveraux is one of the Lords, heir to the Royal family of Stygian, the dark magic world. His family is top of the supernatural world and he has some of the strongest dark magic. But he and his brothers still have to attend Rathe U, the place where dark and light magic world have to coexist and they also have to keep up the appearance with the Giftless aka non-magic people. London Crow is a Giftless but Knight feels this strong and strange obsession to her. He wants to deny that a plain Giftless is his mate, not his plaything but it's useless. But London has a past that will shatter everything. AND IT ENDS WITH A MF CLIFFY THAT BROKE ME!
.
I was so pumped when two of my favorite authors announced a fantasy project because I knew they will slay it. And they did. London and Knight are fire together. I am a sucker for rejected mate trope and they delivered the best kind! There is something so addictive and satisfying to read about two people to be bound by something beyond their control..something extraordinary..something so intense. And it's even more exciting for my angst loving heart when they try to reject the bond and end up in all kinds of pain. What can I say..I love the emotional torture! Knight is just perfection in every way. If you love a great antihero like me, Knight will shoot to top of your list of book boyfriends. He is cruel and ruthless and dominating and infuriating and too hot to handle ( and he knows that). He has no so called moral compass. He takes what he wants. He doesn't follow rules. He doesn't care about love. He wants the power. And then a so called Giftless brought him to his knees. London was lost in her life and Knight's dangerous edgy vibes called to her reckless heart but that doesn't mean she will let the dark prince to control her. She is feisty. She is complex. And she has so many skeletons hidden in her closet..those, when exposed, will destroy everything. Amo and Meagan both write the hottest, panty melting, kindle burning s3× scenes and this book...HOLY HOTNESS OVERLOAD. It was sizzling hot. It had delicious push and pull. It had nail biting suspense and twists..and at the end you will ask how could they play with your heart like this but I trust them to heal us too!

LET ME JUST START OFF BY SAYING THIS: I have loved Amo Jones since I was introduced to her (ty @sincity_bookworm 🫶🏼). I will continue to love her and purchase allllll zee books (this was my first Meagan Brandy book). So please don’t come for me as I know some don’t approve of ratings under 3 stars. I however, appreciate all ratings, will still read books regardless of ratings, and still recommend everyone read whatever tf they want whether or not I or anyone else liked it.

This book was complete and utter chaos, and not your normal A.J. twisty turny oh boy oh boy chaos. More like I legit could not tell you what happened in this book other than maybe, the last 15%. This was almost a DNF, on multiple occasions. It’s so freaking repetitive! Like ok we get it, you do drugs and love your best friend, a lot…but like, what is actually going on?! It felt as though each wrote a chapter, bouncing back and forth, without actually reading the previously written chapter to make sure it flows. Or makes sense. Or moves forward. I didn’t connect with any characters, and there was so many of them. And as someone mentioned in another review - please tell me why hockey was even a thing? And who tf is Zeke, and why was he even a part of the story? What did I miss there?! Complete waste of words when it added absolutely
N O T H I N G to the story. My brain feels as confused as Londons did for most of the book <— ooh ooh, there, I found my character connection.

Can someone give me a rundown of what I just read and what I might have missed? Cuzzz……..🤯

I do wish I had enjoyed this because like I said I really love Amo Jones books, this particular one was just a no for me. 🫣😫

What is with the sexual violence? I read fantasy books to escape into a world where men treat women better. I don’t want to read a fantasy book where men treat women like objects, that’s our reality.

The scene where he jerks off to her sleeping and then pours his cum into her mouth while she is asleep? That made me sick to my stomach, how violating. Then she’s crying wanting to go home because he kidnapped her and all he can think about is how hard he is. Wtf!!!!

This book had so much potential but discussed the graphic acts of sexual assault more then anything relevant to the actual plot.

0/5 if I could, shame on the authors.

I don’t know what the hell I thought this book would be. I wish I never found out. Reading this I was confused 90% of the time. Not having any sort of transitions and moving from one scene to the next within a sentence was tough to comprehend. The whole book was tough to comprehend really. The end was actually done well, the plot twist was pretty good and if I didn’t think I would still be confused to no end reading the sequel I might’ve thought about giving it a try when it comes out but it’s a no from me.

The writing and bad language had me laughing so hard - and not in a good way. I'm all for a few "fuck" here and there but every two sentences ? God no.

The premise looked great, but the characters are acting like hormomal teenagers. No thank you

Але Найт такииий тошнотний, Лондон чисто тягне за двох цю книжку. Ну і Бен їй допомагає… допомагав тягнути. Брати тупо ніачьом.
І до чогось впхали ще й хокей в цю книжку…

When I started this book, I was expecting some sort of enemies-to-lovers dynamic between the main characters, based on the description. However, the enemies part only existed in Knight's head, and the lovers part was only some steamy scenes, but they weren't even only between Knight and London. I finished it for the sole purpose of not leaving it in DNF, and I don't feel like, by the end, it was worth it.
Both main characters were very unlikable. London was constantly complaining about everything and everyone around her like she wasn't the one with the worst possible attitude, and spent the whole time either drinking, getting high, or wining about something. Supernatural things happen in this book from the start, but she always comes up with explanations that make no sense, so it takes her forever to realize about the Fae around her—by forever, I mean she figures it out at around 80% of the book, because throughout it she interacts with Knight that much.
Knight is an arrogant, edgy jerk, but I kind of expected that. What I did not expect was for him to have 0 redeemable qualities. He thinks all humans are inferior and weak, and he takes advantage of a lot of them, but again, I was prepared for that. However, there's no character development. He starts with a point of view, and he ends the book with the same point of view. There is no chemistry whatsoever between him and London, and I expected him to progressively care for her more and more, but he remains the exact same person. She is an angry and defiant person but has no backbone when it comes to his bullsh*t, and I got bored of that really quickly.
Nothing actually happens until the last chapters, at around 70%. There is a lot of moving around, with London and Knight hanging around with other people, doing their own thing, but beyond some physical moments and a strange "attraction they can't explain", they are never together. There is no plot line to follow, and everything that occurs is pointless: it just leads to nowhere, makes no sense, and doesn't add to the story. I feel like what happened at the end could have happened way earlier, and the plot could have developed from that, because it was interesting and intense and it didn't need buildup from the rest of the book at all. However, it was really the last part, like the last 5%.
Someone else wrote how the hockey thing had no reason to be included, and I agree. Same with that girl that claims to be Jus' friend, the weird attraction all the brothers had toward London (not a strange to RH, but come on, all the brothers involved? And they are real, blood brothers), and whatever Alex was doing with Ben. What was that final scene between them even supposed to mean? That he was in a trance when they were together like that, and that's why he's hooked? Was it just a way of showing how devious and careless Fae are? Because we already know that. Knight repeats it incessantly🙄
This was not a good romance book, nor a fantasy one. I know I'm being harsh, but reading it was really frustrating and this is the only outlet I have lol
I don't feel like the last part made up for the whole book, so I don't think I'll be continuing this series.
