Kit Morgan, aka Geralyn Beauchamp, has been writing for fun all of her life. When writing as Geralyn Beauchamp, her books are epic, adventurous, romantic fantasy at its best. When writing as Kit Morgan they are whimsical, fun, inspirational sweet and clean stories that depict a strong sense of family and community. 'His Prairie Princess' is the first of the Prairie Brides books and the first in the series of a long line of stories about Clear Creek, Oregon. One of the wackiest little towns in the old west! Get to know the townsfolk in Clear Creek and come sit a spell!

NOTE: Hi folks, it has come to my attention there is an erotica book floating around out there written under the name Kit Morgan. IT IS NOT MY BOOK! I do not, and never will, write in that genre.

I’ve stored this book in my iCloud for a long time. I haven’t read an historical romance by this author in a while. I always enjoyed her historical romance sprinkled with humor. Im glad I finally dug this one out of storage and read it because it certainly didn’t disappoint. This book was an easy read and it went quickly. I loved the characters from the town of Nowhere in the Washington Territory. Filled with charm and the simplicity of 1870. Besides humor this book brings out other emotions. Definitely an edge of seat near the end. The story takes place at Christmas time which makes it an added plus.

Summer James was raised in an orphanage in New Orleans . When she reached 18 years of age she had to leave the orphanage. She had three options on what to do after leaving. Find a respectable job in New Orleans , live on the streets, or become a mail order bride. Since no work was available at the time Summer decided to take the mail order bride option. She would go to the small community of Nowhere Washington to be the bride of Mr Clayton Riley, the town’s Sheriff. What if Mr Clayton Riley didn’t like her? Would he send her back to New Orleans to live on the streets? This was her only opportunity to a better life in a new community. What lay ahead for this young lady?

I recommend this book to readers of historical fiction and to fans of Kit Morgan. This is the first book of Holiday Mail Order Brides series.

How this started: Kerrie and Sarah both dared me to read more Love Inspired(TM) novels. This wasn't from that publisher but it was in the Christan Romance section on Amazon Kindle for free so I said what the hell.

All these characters were so badly developed and written that it felt like watching paper cut-out characters interact.

The villains were so stereotypical it was comedic, which wasn't the author's intent.

Also the whole all the females find the heroine plain, but the males find her gorgeous. She's either beautiful or plain. Pick one, and stay with it.

The hero fell in love with her because of her beauty, fragility, and her constant crying. True love right here.

The mail order bride trope kinds squicks me. I haven't figured out why yet.

At least there was no conversion porn in this one.

Final thoughts:

The Christmas Mail Order Bride is the first book in the Holiday Mail Order Brides series by Kit Morgan. Summer James spent her entire life in an orphanage but now she is eighteen and must leave. She ends up in Nowhere, Washington Territory, as a mail order bride for Clayton Riley, the sheriff. Clayton didn't order a bride. His brother and mother did. Clayton is still grieving for his dead wife and doesn't want a bride.

This was a short sweet novella. There were questions I had about certain things but since it was just a novella I didn't get them answered. Still it was nice and cute. I did have an issue with a sheriff dropping his gun but I guess the author thought it would be funny. That and a few other issues made me give this only three stars. Unfortunately, if I say what they are then I'll be giving spoilers away and I don't want to do that. But I would keep this in mind for people who are looking for a sweet Christmas themed romance.

I came across this series on Amazon one night at work and it introduced me to the whole genre of mail order bride/western historical romance that I did not know existed before. From that time on I've never read a book by Kit Morgan that I haven't enjoyed.

"Christmas present? It's not even Thanksgiving yet! Besides, when you asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I told you I needed a new pair of boots!"

"But isn't a bride so much better?"

The Christmas Mail Order Bride (2013, Angel Creek Press), first in the Holiday Mail Order Brides series by Kit Morgan, is a comical historical Western romance set in 1870 (fictional) Nowhere, Washington Territory. The novella is a standalone story, and I suspect all the other holiday-themed stories in the series are as well.

In December (of 2017), I was looking for a Christmas audiobook to listen to - yes, this review is quite tardy - and I decided to give this book a reread. I'd previously given it three stars and was wondering whether I'd view it differently this time around, based on some other reviews I've seen of Kit Morgan's books since. How happy I was that my gamble paid off! This book is one of those humorous books that I didn't enjoy as much as I should have in previous years because I was taking it too seriously. Some books are meant to be laughed at. Just look at the name of the town. And the way the hero and heroine meet. It's obvious. Why did I view this as ludicrous rather than humorous? If there's any doubt, see the author's bio: Kit Morgan's books "are whimsical, fun, inspirational sweet and clean stories that depict a strong sense of family and community." Unfortunately, there is one erotica book near the bottom of her list that is listed under this author's name. She says right in her bio that it isn't hers. Is there a GR librarian reading my review that could take care of this?

Rating: 4 1/2 stars
Narration: 5 stars

The heroine: Summer James has turned eighteen and must leave the orphanage she was raised in. Her choices are to "find respectable work in New Orleans, or find it elsewhere." When she isn't able to find a job, she resigns herself to become the mail order bride for a sheriff in Nowhere, Washington Territory!

The hero: Widowed Sheriff Clayton Riley has a loving brother who has sent for a mail order bride - for Clayton! - and fails to inform Clayton about this - err… gift - until right before she arrives. When Clayton gets the news, he is so shocked that… well, let's say that their first meeting starts with a bang. (Does that count as a "meet cute?" I don't know! It was certainly funny, at any rate.)

Christian elements: Uses of the name God were strangely inconsistent for an author writing inspirational stories. Probably not the best choice. Examples below. Ones with poor choices for the use of God's name are in a spoiler tag out of respect for those who prefer not to even see such examples.

"God wanted her! By golly, yes. He did - and she would keep that hidden in her heart to see her…"

"And it was all due to God, Mrs. Ridgley and Mrs. Teeters… She smiled, prayed for all her benefactors……"

Is it clean/chaste? Chaste, yes. However, there is a decent amount of violence near the end with blood (this is a Western after all), and more importantly to my fellow clean readers, there is an attempted .

What I liked: The first time I read it, I thought this book had two-dimensional characters and stereotypical villains. But this time, I decided that the main characters are a bit more developed than that. And that the villains are absolutely deliberately two-dimensional. I was chuckling to myself occasionally, imagining a bad guy twirling his mustache.

What I didn’t like: I would have preferred only obviously positive uses of God's name, and for the violence to have been toned down a bit. It really was on the tame side, but still more than I prefer.

Audiobook: I was thrilled to listen to a male narrator for the first time ever, because men are easier for me to hear. I felt like I was listening to a real live cowboy with a wry, sarcastic voice adding to the humor already present in the writing.

***********

The bottom line: This is a humorous Western romance with villains worthy of mustache-twirling. I recommend this book to older teens and up as long as the issues I mentioned above aren't a turn-off. I checked Amazon and was able to find about three other books of Ms. Morgan's for free. I believe they're all the first in a series, and I am curious how I will fare with her books in the future.

This was far too clean for my liking i mean jesus. There wasnt nearly enough romance between the couple i swear i saw more of the harpy mother and daughter duo than the couple. I hope the rest of series is better or ill be bloody disappointed i mean yes its HR but ive read tonnes of MOB genre and they dont have to be prim and proper and all the way clean romance i dont expect as a modern romance book onviously but at least the wedding night and some romantic scenes and stuff this felt so empty and drama filled i barely enjoyed the story and was mostly just reading and hoping that theyd finally pull their heads out and get together and actually talk and you know move the story along but nope months together and its like they were still strangers who suddenly loved eachother pffft. I hated those busy body hoes more than i loved the couple i mean why put drama into it if your not putting romance. I can see why youd need a lil spice or some conflict but good gods above if its a romance book it should have at leaat majority romance not like 5 percent if im being generous romance. Okay im done now. Even though this is a series i think i may pick and choose the books i read from now on and hope that they are at least better maybe the mail order bride ink series... that seems more adult just from the blurb.

This book was a fun surprise. I either really like Mail Order Bride books, or I don't like them at all. This one started very well, then moved into what could have been an "I have a secret" type book, but that part was short lived, and although the "secret" impacted the way Summer viewed herself, it wasn't one that came between her and her intended. One I wouldn't mind reading again, and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Sweet holiday story

Well written, heartwarming story. Wish Summer had been a little more fiery...she was orphaned in Civil War time New Orleans so I found her a little too innocent of society.

Heroine was a bit too weepy for my taste. It fit with the character and it was consistent, but I found myself wanting her to find herself some inner resilience.

The Christmas Mail Order Bride by Kit Morgan is a great Christmas Novella. Now I must read The New Year's Bride, the next book in the series.

Summer James grew up in the Winslow Orphanage in New Orleans. She is now eighteen and much find somewhere to go since eighteen is age that all children must leave orphanages. Unable to find suitable work in New Orleans, Mrs. Teeters, the head mistress of the orphanage, refers Summer to a Mail-order-bride service. While waiting to see Mrs. Ridgley, the proprietress of the service, Summer overhears Mrs. Ridgley and a man name Slade arguing over her. He was trying to buy or claim Summer. There has only been one response to the mail-order-bride add looking for a husband for Summer. Mrs. Ridgley strongly encourages Summer to accept the marriage proposal and not to wait for more responses. If she doesn't she'll find herself the slave of Slade or some another man in New Orleans that's just like him. Slavery isn't the only unsavory aspects of what men like Slade would force upon her. Summer signs the Mail-order-bride contract hoping she's picked the lesser of two bad situations.

Sheriff Clayton finds himself waiting for a stage coach that holds none other than the mail-order-bride, his brother, Spencer has ordered for him as a Christmas gift. Clayton is a lonely widower but he's not ready to court again much less marry a  woman he's never met. As Summer disembarks the stage coach, a shot rings out. Clayton had every intention of sending right back to where she came from but now Ms. James can't go anywhere until she's healed.

Oh how I loved this story. Of course it is Kit Morgan, what else could I have expected! Her stories just warm my heart all around. Summer James grew up in the orphanage and now that she was of age, she had to either get a job or get married. Unfortunately a man was trying to get her to be in service. Yep not good. So she took the last mail order bride ad and she was on her way out west.
Sheriff Clayton Riley had lost his wife a few years back and would not move forward. So is mother and brother placed he ad for the bride. To say Clayton was surprised when she walked in the door doesn't even describe what happened!
Full of humor, but also heartache for Summer who had never had a real family, I loved every word of this story. With Michael Rahhal narrating , it was perfect!!

I thought this was a very sweet story. It's short (less than 200 pages) but I felt that it carried the little angst it could muster. I loved all the characters in the book; the Hero, the heroine, Spencer, their mother ...
I finished this one in one go.

A cute, sweet holiday romance. I'd never read one of Kit's books before - at least not that I remember - so wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't disappointed. If you're reading reviews on Amazon, don't be thrown off by the negative review (one star). I don't feel it was deserved.

The writing was well done. Characters were okay - especially the main ones, although a few others could have been "filled" out more since this is a series. Editing, a few errors, but not enough that I would shake my head at and stop reading the book.

I love stories about mail order brides and this was just different enough that it caught my imagination. What drew me in???

1. The heroine, Summer, was a mail order bride. Hmm nothing new there. Wait!!! Except, she hadn't arranged it. The mistress of the orphanage where she'd lived had done so. Why? Summer is eighteen and must leave the orphanage.

2. The "husband-to-be", Clayton, has no idea he's getting a mail order bride. His mother and brother have arranged the whole thing.

That, was enough for me. I knew that I had to find out exactly what happened when these two met. Also, I was sure that there was bound to be some humor (there was)and that's always a plus for me.

There is a second book "The New Year's Bride" that revolves around Spencer (Clayton's brother) who is the unknowing "husband-to-be" in this book, and I fully intend on getting the book and reading it.

Good job, Kit!!

The Christmas Mail Order Bride by Kit Morgan is an unexpectedly sweet novella. Summer James is an orphan from New Orleans. Mrs. Deeter at the orphanage put her in touch with Mrs Ridgely who has a mail ordered bride service. Mr. Slade was in Mrs. Ridgely's office wanting her to procure girls for him. He gets thrown out not before telling Summer he'll have her. Mrs. Ridgely's sends her to a town called Nowhere in the Washington Territories. Her groom is the sheriff. The sheriff, Clayton, finds out minutes before she arrives that his mother and brother Preston, mailed off the bride wanted letter. As soon as Summer opens the door he drops his gun it goes off hitting Summer in the foot. She tries not to cry from the pain but she faints into his arms. Clayton carries her to the doctors office. She stays in the doctor's house until they need her bed for members of the possee that got shot by Red Ned.

The Christmas Mail-Order Bride by Kit Morgan
Holiday Mail-Order Brides Series Book One
Sheriff Clayton Riley had loved once and lost her way too soon. Now, he's fine in his lonely, bitter state. His brother, Spencer, thinks otherwise and instead of those boots Clayton was hoping for—his brother orders him a bride.

Summer James is like a skittish colt when it comes to believing something good is going to happen in her life, being an unwanted orphan and all. When she turns eighteen and has the choice of finding a job or becoming a mail-order bride—she chooses the latter. She has a rough start with her betrothed and the old fears of being rejected surface.

Some wonderful, dangerous, and annoying characters help bring this story together. I loved the humor that starts their unusual first meeting. And it's true to life in the fact that people react to what their past has taught them.

Let's travel back in time. The year is 1870, five years after the end if the Civil War. Summer is eighteen or soon will be eighteen, which means by law she will have to leave the orphanage where she was abandoned as an an fact. This is the place Summer grew up and she's nervous about leaving New Orleans.

The headmistress writes a letter of recommendation to a mail order bride company. Summer chooses to answer that ad. However, Summer is in for a surprise, the man (town Sheriff) she is meeting did not send for a bride, his deputy brother did, posing as his brother. Sheriff is initially furious, but behaves respectful anyway.

After sometime and a serious if events, the Sheriff realize a he is no longer angry with his brother. I truly enjoyed this book. it is a great Christmas read.

This was a fairly short and clean romance about a mail order bride out of New Orleans. I liked the world building that took place, but found that the hero was a bit too secretive for my tastes. Add to that the fact that the heroine was too hung up on being rejected, taking it to a very extremely unhealthy level, made for a somewhat boring read. If it wasn't for the fact that I had purchased the next book in the series, I would hesitate to continue with it, but as I already have the next book, I'll give the author another chance.

An UNCERTAIN BRIDE FOR AN UNSUSPECTING GROOM

I would recommend this delightful clean read to anybody, teens and up because it doesn't have any foul language or any kind of explicit sex that would need an age rating, no need to worry who picks up your e-readers and see this little Christmas Gem. It is the second book in the Holiday Mail Order Series, but have no fear in getting and reading this one because it is a complete standalone HEA story on its own weight. Our heroine Summer, an orphan finds out she must leave the orphanage directly on her 18th birthday, is given the seemingly chance of her life, to be a mail order bride to a sheriff of all people, in Nowhere out west, will she get there safe and be safe there, but most importantly, will he want Summer after he sees her, she worries. Now, the stage is coming into Nowhere with Summer in it and Sheriff Clayton's just being informed of that, and who summer is and what she has traveled all the way out west to Nowhere, with the expectation to do, by his brother Spencer and he is many things. Shocked, angered and just flabbergasted to name a few which leads to a minor messed up event between Sheriff Clayton and Summer before they even get formally introduced, this leads to each of them going through their own inner demons of whether to carry on with the wedding or not, then let's not leave out ex girlfriends, and outlaws, maybe Summer's past a little! Finally, everything gets settled by Christmas in Nowhere! Great little sticking stuffer, Kit Morgan, has here for you, or for an ADVENT CALENDAR, One of the 12 days of Christmas things! This is a great little read while STANDING IN LINE, waiting to check out in those extra long Holiday Lines, WAITING FOR YOUR PACKAGE TO BE WRAPPED, at the speciality wrap botique, and for just anything else. I like to read while I am cooking especially baking if it's for 30 minutes or more! Just a bit of Holiday Cheer that you can wrap yourself up with waiting on that Christmas countdown, to go by.

Mainly picked this up because it helps with my reading challenge. That is why I grabbed book 2 as well. But this did intrigue my interest.

The story follows Sheriff Clayton and Summer. Clayton is given a mail order bride by his mother and his brother. He never wanted to remarry, but he was so lonely since his wife died a while back so his family took matters into their own hands. Summer grew up as an orphan and now she is looking for her own family and to escape from New Orleans. So why not try the Mail Order Bride program? What did she have to lose?

At first I was annoyed with this especially because he accidentally shot her foot. WHAT? I get accidents and all, but if I was Summer I would've left town the moment I could walk again. I know, I know it wasn't his fault and it was an accident and bad timing...but c'mon man...I would have a hard time wanting to laugh about it later.

Once I got over that annoyance, I was hooked and I wanted I had a hard time stopping.

This technically is "Christian Romance" but I think God was mentioned a couple of times? It didn't bug me at all. Super clean romance and it fit.

Loved Clayton and Summer. Summer was a cry baby, but I get it. She had a rough childhood.

Clayton's mom was adorable. Wish she could order me for one of her sons. hahaha.

I had another annoyance with the lame Charlotte and her mom. They were entertaining but they annoyed the hell out of me. BUT at the same time I was highly entertained. Such conflicting emotions. They were horrible, horrible people. Curious to see what bitch-y plans they have for the next book. hahahaha.

The narrator sounded familiar...can't put my finger on it and I took a quick look at past books of his, but couldn't find something I listened too. But he was good. His female voice made me chuckle at first, but I did get used to it.

Overall, this was entertaining and cheesy and cute. It was short so you are able to get through it quick. A couple of annoyances, but worth it. I'll give this 3 stars. Onto book 2.

Pluses? Written with good grammar and vocabulary; over 200 pages. But major misses in historical accuracy, plot, and trajectory. Too much, oh you are beautiful therefore I am in love. Ridiculous characterizations -- wonderful family because the men serve and cut up food for the women who prepared it in the first place. Gag. Then the obligatory saved twice from a fate worse than death by having sex with strange men to living happily ever after by having sex with a strange man to whom you are pledged. Another miss for me was the gratuitous religion. God saves everyone by making sure the "bride" gets her childish dream of a Christmas wedding; her husband is God's gift to her. Gag again. Was not an enjoyable read. Kept giving the author and the book the opportunity to improve but the final downhill trajectory of being kidnapped by nasty women pretending to be gentry, the fake shotgun marriage threat, the walking into the evil killer/rapist's den, just a total gag. Not even successful as a humorous book. Not for me anyway.

Oh had so much potential! I mean I actually laugh out loud when I first started reading this book and I was in the mood for a Christmas book. I even suggested it to my mom to download it and read it. But as the story went on I mean..come on! It got so bad and the characters were awful. First off I can't even imagine the mother and daughter being that nasty. And the whole story behind the girl who wanted the sheriff was just blah. The main character female was awful and I could not get into liking her at all. This whole thing of don't send me back and does he love me and the whole miscommunication thing drives me insane. That is all I read in romance novels anymore, miscommunication, the other women that wants the guy and will do anything she can do even if it is underhanded just to get him. Please someone come out with an original romance novel! I am about to just go back to published paper novels and cancel my kindle unlimited subscription.
