Featruing the artwork of Arthur Suydam, Greg Land & Kyle Hotz. Comic-book fans devoted enough to read only Marvel titles have long been dubbed "Marvel Zombies," but even the most passionate reader could not have predicted the runaway popularity of the Marvel Zombies limited series and its subsequent spin-offs. A shocking, spellbinding tale of a Marvel Universe infected by a worldwide zombie plague, this fascinating saga sent readers racing to comic-book shops - resulting in an unprecedented number of multiple printings of each issue. Arthur Suydam's unforgettable covers have been a huge factor in the Marvel Zombies phenomenon, with many devoted fans purchasing all the issues' multiple printings for that reason alone. Now, each and every one of those covers is collected in a single keepsake edition in all their gory detail, along with a horde of never-before-seen extras! Also featuring the zombie-themed covers of Greg Land (Ultimate Fantastic Four) and Kyle Hotz (Zombie)!
If you want all the Marvel Zombies cover by Suydam but find the eBay prices of the back issues too steep, this is a handy book that collects all of them.
It was impressive how Marvel maximized the Marvel Zombies phenomenon that Robert Kirkman brought to the table while the Walking Dead creator was at the publisher. At least five pricey hardcover books, and the fans wanted more.
I am the only person on Earth who did not enjoy Marvel Zombies when it came out. I bought the oversized hardcover the day that it came out in 2006, took it home and read it immediately. This was back in the days when publishers didn't flood the market with collected editions and it was possible to keep up on my reading, but I digress. I hated it. I mean, the covers were great. I used to have them as wallpaper on my computer as the series was being published. The Arthur Suydam zombie covers and variants all appealed to me, but the series was crap. The book was a surprise sell out in hardcover, and seeing a window of opportunity, I flipped it on eBay immediately, getting more than I paid for it. The hardcover went on to five printings plus multiple softcover printings, Complete Collection repackagings, and eventually an Omnibus...er, Zomnibus.
This collection of covers was released, and I thought that the idea was great. The covers were the best part as far as I was concerned. I didn't end up buying it, as I have too many irons in the fire and am not independently wealthy. Marvel routinely blows out dead stock to dealers, and I got this, sealed and in mint condition, for free with a purchase over $25 at Warp 9 Comics in Clawson, MI a couple of years ago.
The cover of each issue is presented with the original comic book cover that it was based on with Sudyam's thoughts and inspirations on each one. The back of the book has non-Suydam zombie covers as well as all eleven Tales Of The Zombies covers from the 1970s. This especially appealed to me, as the series was reprinted in an Essential black and white phone book way back when but the covers were in black and white. I can't believe that Marvel has never reissued that series in an Omnibus or other format. The Essential has been out of print for years and zombies remain popular due to the success of The Walking Dead. It seems like a no-brainer easy sell to me. This book was an enjoyable, leisurely read. This is all cake, heavy on the frosting.
This book provides some great insight into how the artists behind Marvel Zombies went about creating the art that has become something of a cult icon within the comic sphere. I found it really entertaining reading about the stories that the artists wanted to convey, especially with the details that you normally wouldn't notice (the mice in MJ's dress being a favourite).
Also, due to the nature of the art, this also acts as a collection of some of the most iconic covers from Marvel's history, along with some interesting tidbits about them, which I thought was really neat. However, a little bit past halfway through, the text stops and it comes purely artwork, which is fine but does lead to a bit of fatigue. It also becomes less about the Marvel Zombies series and more about Marvel based Zombie artwork.
75% of the reason to read Marvel Zombies is the artwork and covers. This wonderful book is a huge collection of Suydam's covers with some extra tidbits of information to appease the diehard comic fan.
Ummmm...what can you say about a book that is composed completely by covers? It was neat looking, I guess...? But I still like the idea of the zombies, hence the 4 stars.
More or less a visual treat, this volume reproduces the various zombified covers from the Marvel Zombies series, and related Marel comics. Arthur Sudyam does a great job on all!
