Something Good: Fourth Story

Rate this book
Carriage House Chronicle #4

High on a hill stood a lonely rocker…

Rob Westerbrook’s not dealing well with moving on. His four children are overprogrammed in hopes they forget their mother took off with a guy named Vern in his converted school bus tiny home. As a successful musician, maybe, things were looser in his family structure before she left. But now he’s stepping up to the plate.

His children would say overstepping-

After a parade of nannies, babysitters, kid sitters and one woman who insisted on being called a governess, the kids are taking their lives back.

Harley Sumner’s aimless after a string of awful boyfriends and several miserable jobs. Her sister hooked her up for the summer, driving kids around. Harley wasn’t looking to change her life, just get it together. And then he smiled.

Harley can’t discount the way he makes her feel in private and the way the kids make her feel in public. Rob isn’t sure letting go of the past won’t affect everyone’s future. But his unlikely nanny, Harley, might be the key to writing a new song.

Nothing comes from nothing; nothing ever could…

Perhaps they’re both ready for Something Good.

A slight Sound of Music retelling, but with rockstars.
Carriage House Chronicles - No cliffhangers, and always a happily ever after.

I used to create "dreams" with my best friend growing up. We'd each pick a boy we liked, then we'd write down a meet-cute that always ended with a happily ever after.

Now I get to dream every day, although it's a little steamier these days. And I've discovered I can and will write anywhere I can. Keep tuned to Instagram to see all the times I fit in a sentence or two.

I'm a writer, married to a writer, mother of a creative dynamo of a nine-year-old boy and currently a little sleepy. I'm a klutz and goofball and love lipstick as much as my Chuck Taylors.

Good things in the world: pepperoni pizza, Flair pens*, wine, coffee, laughing with my friends until my stomach hurts, a musician at the top of their game, getting lost somewhere I've never been, matinee movies on a weekday, the Chicago Cubs, a fresh new notebook full of possibilities, bourbon on a cold night, Fantasy Football, witty men, walking through the local zoo in the rain and that moment when a character clicks in and begins to write their own adventure. I'm just the pen.

LOL! And Loving It
I had a grin on my face all through the book, what a wonderful, funny story! Sound of Music has always been a favorite movie of mine and the references are so to the point. Fortunately ‘only’ four children instead of seven, but still… A lot of Ms Kay’s books are intertwined with several characters and it adds to the whole, but it is not necessary to know them to enjoy each book by itself.
Highly recommended.

Something Good is the very best way to start off my 2024 reading year! Kelly Kay pulls out all the stops with this wickedly witty and truly feel-good kind of story. The 4th and final book in her Carriage House Chronicles, this time around we get Harley Sumner and Rob Westerbrook's age-gap/you shouldn't touch the nanny but desperately want to/rock star romance. With Rob floundering after Vern's wife (his ex) bailed on her family, the 12th woman to try and be the nanny for his incredible children turns out to be the very savior to bring this unforgettable crew some real semblance of peace. Harley is a marvel with her unfiltered mouth that only endears her to everyone around her. She is clearly the polar opposite of her sister Morgan and is the ray of sunshine the Westerbrooks desperately need.

Kay uses the movie "The Sound of Music" as a sort of crazy-good backdrop as Harley manages to allow Rob's foursome to simply be kids and not continue to be a part of a regimented kind of life. There are many references to the movie itself and you could say that Rob's strict ways are only in place so he can make sure his kids are safe and well-cared for, much like those of Captain Von Trapp's. It's quite clever how Kay has found a way to update the '60s classic with Harley even calling some of the kids by Von Trapp names and having sleepovers and singalongs to encourage as much happiness as possible.

The rockstar and his 'girly' are most definitely enchanted with one another and I just loved that Harley becomes Rob's muse ending his musical and touring dry spell within a few short months. It's without a doubt a summer to remember as Rob and his extraordinary kids find in Harley everything they've missed after Vern's wife (I love that she doesn't even get to have a first name) abandoned them a year prior. The way Rob's kids all pulled together while he struggled to find his feet again made me tear up as revelations of the past foggy year came to light. The fact that those Westerbrooks stick together no matter what is what endeared me to them most of all. And with that final grand gesture, not to mention a heartwarming epilogue, there was no doubt Harley was always destined to become one of them. She is one lucky woman and she knows it.

Kelly Kay continues to write fresh storylines that undoubtedly keep me engaged, make me chuckle and swoon with each turn of the page. Something Good is just that: a really good, easygoing love story that is bound to make you smile over and over again.

Harley goes through jobs faster than anyone she knows, but when she’s asked to nanny for her older sister’s musician friend Rob and stay in her friends Meg and Jake’s carriage house, she wants to give it a chance. Rob’s divorce has broken him. His ex-wife left him with their four children and his guilt from his work has him refusing to play music and micromanaging his children’s lives. When Harley arrives, she brings joy to the kids but also to Rob’s life. And he maybe he just what she needs, if he’s willing to overlook the age gap and the fact that she’s his employee!

Kelly Kay’s beautiful world created through the Shock Mount, Crossfade and Present Tense stories continues through an additional four novellas featuring visitors to the carriage house. This is the very last of the four stories, a sweet ode to The Sound of Music film, complete with the music and a loving nanny. The love the kids have for their father is special, and they embrace Harley into the fold with equal attachment. Despite the age gap and employment relationship, friends and family are rooting for the couple, who can hardly hold themselves back! It’s a short read that complements the rest of the series ❤️

I adored this Sound of Music retelling of sorts so much! I loved to get to know Rob better, since he has always been there in the background but I never felt like I really new the man. Well, now we do, and we're all the better for it. The relationships all around were perfection, whether it was the kids, or the kids with the new nanny, or the adult friendships, or the budding romance between our two leads. When you know you just know. ❤ What a way to end a perfect series!
