Their Last Resort

Biting banter is all they know. But messy feelings have a way of coming to the surface in this beachside romance from USA Today bestselling author R.S. Grey.

Paige Young and Cole Clark are polar opposites. A world traveler since birth, Paige loves to lead activities for guests at a luxury island resort in Turks and Caicos. From bingo nights to cliffside hikes, Paige is up for anything. Cole, meanwhile, prefers his number-crunching desk job. He’s the assistant director at the resort—stiff and meticulous. He’s so by the book that he keeps the book. In his desk drawer.

They’re perfectly aligned in one way, though—their ability to drive each other crazy. Every day brings a fresh battle of wits. They’re rivals, archnemeses…and they’re definitely never going to talk about that one time they kissed. Ha ha. Nope!

But when Paige finds out that Cole has been ordered to fire her on the same day a hurricane threatens their little slice of paradise, it’s clear the game is over.

At odds, in peril, and forced to shelter in place together, these two enemies might finally have to confront their true feelings. (You know, the ones hidden under all those withering looks.)

R.S. Grey consistently provides the perfect escape whenever I crave a book that seamlessly blends humor, fast-paced storytelling, and excellent writing. "Their Last Resort" was no different—it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Paige Young and Cole Clark, the main characters, embraced a friendship that they had been feuding upon their very first encounter. It oscillated between exquisite banter and entertaining quarrels to heated scenes embossed with unvoiced feelings and toe-curling chemistry. all in all, it was the prefect and most adequate refuge— plate-cleanser— after my last heavy, disappointing read.

many thanks to Grey’s Promotion and NetGalley for providing an arc in exhausting for an honest review

Opposites attract, workplace romance, grumpy/sunshine, and he falls first. So many troupes I love. I was hoping this would be a win for me, but it was just average. Cole and Paige were both fine, but I never felt that connection between them.

I know I can always count on R.S. Grey when I want a fun, quick romantic comedy that I can shut my brain off for a few hours for and enjoy. Their Last Resort falls into this category.

Taking place on an island resort on Turks and Caicos, Paige and Cole work together and have a bit of a frenemy situation. The enemy-to-lovers trope is nothing new for Grey’s books, and as one of my favorite tropes, I enjoyed the banter and chemistry it presents.

The one thing I would say is that the characters felt pretty formulaic to Grey’s other romance characters. Paige is silly and outgoing, thinking she dislikes Cole but later figures out it’s love. Cole on the other hand is more buttoned up and reserved, and is secretly longing to Paige but plays her games just the same. While fun to read, it did feel a bit repetitive to many of Grey’s other books and characters. I would enjoy seeing new personalities in future books.

I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Usually the titles available as part of the Prime First Reads options are by authors I’ve never heard of and books I have no interest in. So, I was excited to see a book by RS Grey on the list. Unfortunately this ended up being probably my least favorite I’ve read by her.

It had some The Hating Game vibes, but not anywhere close to being as well done (and it’s not like THG is peak literature to begin with). The banter, if you can call it that, completely fell flat for me. The main female character made a lot of immature comments and the main male character barely responded. I did not ship them at all, or really care about them.

I also kind of took issue with the big villain of the story. He was supposed to be super disgusting - and how do we know that? The characters make endless disparaging comments about his weight and eating habits. There are so many ways to portray a creepy guy and I just found it kind of annoying that making a bunch of fat references was the way the author decided to go with it.

I feel like 2 stars is being really generous with this.

Paige Young enjoys traveling and seeing new places, so when she gets the opportunity to work in paradise she takes it. She quickly decides the island life is for her. Every day brings something exciting with her job at a luxury resort in Turks and Caicos. She is in charge of guest activities, entertainment and hospitality. Life in the tropics is full of adventure, and her new home has become her sanctuary and happy place. Everything is wonderful at Siesta Playa, except her relationship with the assistant director of operations. Cole Clark is second in command and always manages to annoy her and get her all riled up. For a year they've been rivals since that kiss they pretend didn't happen. They drive each other crazy, and are just too different. While she's fun, spontaneous, and up for anything, Cole is a grumpy workaholic whose usually behind a desk. He's a number crunching, rule following, buttoned up suit type that does everything by the book. They enjoy tormenting each other, and lately he's a huge thorn in her side. When their suddenly forced to spend more time together in an emergency situation will they finally move past the enemy stage and confront the real feelings that might be hiding under all that animosity?

Their Last Resort by R.S. Grey is a slow burn, rivals, opposites attract, enemies to lovers, beach romance full of sizzling chemistry and fantastic banter. I really enjoyed this fun, flirty, cute read! <333

Their Last Resort tells the story of two resort workers-Cole and Paige, and their enemies to lovers story of finding love amongst a storm.

While this story has banter and wit, making me laugh here and there... It also felt quite disjointed. It didn't flow well or develop with any depth. Paige came off as immature. And Cole felt like this gentle giant. I just struggle a little with their connection, being so different. Their whole lead up to I love you felt so quick too. One minute they are enemies, then BAM! They are in love. It progresses so quickly, but it's a SLOW burn in terms of intimacy. With just a little steam in the end.

This is a great storyline idea, I just didn't feel like it was executed well. I also noticed some mentions of weight often that just rubbed me the wrong way. This is my first read by the author and it didn't really work for me. So far the early reviews seem to be out of character for the author though. So I will definitely try one of her more loved reads in the future.

Their Last Resort is a fun, summertime romance between two coworkers, who seemingly are at-odds, at a vacation resort!

Paige and Cole are coworkers at a resort in Turks and Caicos. He’s assistant director of the resort and she works and leads guest activities at the resort. They kissed once but have kept their distance since and both assume the wrong thing a lot, but now with a hurricane coming to the island, they’re forced to shelter-in-place and spend time together!

Paige’s character was very frustrating and immature, her actions and thoughts weren’t great. But her and Cole are both kind of lost with their “hate” towards one another, so they kinda deserve one another? 🤷🏼‍♀️ I used to read a ton of this author’s books years ago, and her newer ones I’ve tried just haven’t been as much of a hit.

I received the audio ALC, all thoughts in this review are my own.

I read a review that said that Paige has "pick-me-girl" energy, and I couldn't agree more!
The way the author paints Cole in a less-than way, bc he is an accountant manager, wears suits, is "stuck indoors performing his number-crunching desk job", has a "five-year plan. It’s color coded and leather bound." Can we stop that? There is nothing wrong about working an office job, being by the book and having a five-year plan.
R.S.Grey's heroines come across as the most immature FMCs I've ever read about - characters who are supposed to be adults. Case in point, they kiss, she flees, and when he says "last night never happened", she gets hurt. I mean, OK for the getting hurt part, but if you run away from someone after you kiss them, can you blame them for their reaction? Come on.
This was already not going well, so imagine my shock at this sentence:
“Imagine if he accidentally booked a flight to Syria. He’d be bartending for ISIS right now . . .”
Not only is it of poor taste, but what a completely idiotic statement to reduce a country to this. Syria is culturally rich: cuisine, music, literature. Some people need to remove their head out of their ass and take a look around. How did a casual remark like this go through editing?
This is where I dnf.

ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book had a bit of an insta-love trope, an annoying female main character and a love story I didn’t really care about. I actually got into this book quite quickly and really wanted to know what would happen next around the halfway point. Unfortunately, the story kind of went downhill in the second half which is why I’m only rating it 2.5 stars.

Only One Bed

Slow Burn
Dual POV
Open Door - Mild Details

I’ve been a fan of RS Grey’s writing for years. She writes some of the best inner monologues filled with realistic & hilarious self deprecating humor. While I didn’t love this one compared to her other work, I enjoyed my time here.

Their Last Resort is marketed as an enemies to lovers romance when really it’s more of a mutual “I like you & I don’t know what to do about it, so I’m going to nettle you instead.” This worked for me, especially since it’s clear that he falls first & is just bidding his time.

I’m always up for a destination setting & I love a romance set at a hotel / inn, so a resort set on Turks and Caicos really did it for me. The forced proximity brought on by a hurricane worked & I loved the only one bed tension that followed.

The timeline bounced around a bit at the beginning that left me occasionally confused & having to go back to reread. This is also fairly short which is great as it makes this a quick read, but the romance felt like it was lacking the depth Rachel usually brings leaving me not as connected with the characters.

I listened to this on audio & you can too if you have KU or snagged this as an Amazon first read in April. I loved the narrators & was able to finish this in only one day!

Thank you to Montlake & Brilliance Publishing for the gifted eARC & ALC in exchange for my honest opinion.

THOUGHTS:

Read if you like:
•workplace romance
•tropical setting
•one bed
•he falls first
•opposites attract
•dual pov

Even though this wasn’t my favorite RS Grey book, I still liked this one! If you want a fun beach read this summer, grab this one! 🙂

I really wouldn’t consider Paige and Cole enemies in this one.. more like friend enemies? It was more banter between them than actual hate. But I love the he falls first trope, so it was cute to see that play out and for Paige to catch on!

I loved the dual pov. It’s always so great to see what both characters are thinking! And the one bed trope? Yes please. That added to the tension and I was all for it. 👏🏼

Overall, I appreciated this book! It’s a quick read and I look forward to Rachel’s next release! 🌴

Content warnings: natural disaster (hurricane, flooding)

This was exactly what I expected from an R.S. Grey book and I absolutely mean that as a compliment. No one does banter and omg-I-hate-this-man-oh-wait-maybe-it's-actually-love??? like R.S. Grey, and this absolutely hit the mark. This was exactly what I needed after a doctor's appointment and a trip to the pharmacy and getting the wrong order at a cafe, and it filled me with the immediate need to reread Anything You Can Do, Not So Nice Guy, and Enemies Abroad.

There could have been something to this book if the author wasn't so in love with her own quips that she made it into a comedy instead of an actual romance. I like funny books but I read romance for you know...the romance?

This is tagged as 'enemies to lovers' but it isn't really. Yes, they are very different sort of people and they don't get along but both know their disagreements are a sort of foreplay. So they have the hots for each other but neither does anything for a year. Why? And why is she insisting she's into another guy?

Only read this if you want a comedy with a sprinkling of romance on top.

This was a cute and fun Island romp of a romance. I was swept away for an afternoon and I had a wonderful time.

Paige and Cole both work at a resort on a beautiful island. They had a missed opportunity to get together a few months back and have since been keeping their distance. But when a tropical storm hits and forces all the employees to double up in the hotel... they end up in an Only One Bed scenario that gets all our blood pumping.

I haven't read an R.S. Grey in a hot minute, so this was a nice little read to kick off the summer. I also listened to this on audio and the performances were fun and comedic and sultry all in one.

April Amazon First Reads pick.

😭 this is another of those examples where I loved one book by an author and then was completely let down in the next.

This was just all over the place with issues. It’s supposed to be enemies to lovers trope but failed at that because they were clearly in love from page one and evenly outwardly didn’t really act like enemies except in a VERY superficial and childish way. Also, it’s filled with cliched and stereotypical side characters and “twists” that are obvious from a mile away. To the point that it’s cartoonish.

Only saving graces are that it was super short and that she does still do slow burn well in terms of the romantic lead up and consummation.

How disappointing.

From the moment I started Their Last Resort, I was irresistibly drawn in. Having been a dedicated fan of R.S. Grey for a decade, I can attest that her storytelling prowess continues to evolve with each book. For me, she writes absolutely brilliant rom-coms that are true to their genre. I always manage to laugh-out-loud with her romances, and this one was no exception.

Paige's fiery spirit immediately resonated with me. Her passion for her profession and the zest with which she approaches every day is truly commendable. Paige's introduction through Cole's perspective had me initially wary of him but as I delved deeper into Cole's thoughts and witnessed his underlying protectiveness towards Paige, he completely won me over. They were such a cute pair.

The simmering tension and playful banter between Cole and Paige kept me riveted. The slow progression of their relationship, peppered with their delightful disagreements, made me cherish every moment leading up to their romance.

If you're emerging from a heavy read or battling a reading rut, this book promises to uplift your spirits. I found myself beaming throughout my reading journey as this was such a fun, joyful read.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Montlake Publishing for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Are you looking for a quick read that takes you to the island of Turks and Caicos? Then this one is for you!

Their Last Resort follows Paige and Cole. Paige runs excursions as a Turks and Caicos resort and Cole is the assistant director of operations at the same resort. They seem to have this mutual dislike for each other. But when Paige's job is on the chopping block, Cole tries to do everything he can to save her job. So the question is, is there more to their relationship?

Book Tropes:
- Workplace Romance
- Forced Proximity
- Enemies/Dislike to Lovers
- Opposites Attract
- One Bed
- Grumpy x Sunshine
- Set in Turks and Caicos

My Thoughts: This was the first book from R.S. Grey that I have read. It was a simple and quick read. There were moments that I found to be funny and entertaining. Paige's personality is fun and vibrant, where Cole is very analytical. These two could not be any more different but they have been pining for each other since the moment Paige started working at the resort which translated as dislike due to many instances that happened within the book.

Was this book predictable? Yes it was. Was it a quick and easy read? Yes it was. Do I think you should read it? That depends. For me it fell a little flat and this is the reasoning why. I felt like there was a lack of description and narration when it came to certain scenarios in the book. And this could be me just being a selfish reader and wanting more, but I felt like I wanted to see more of how their relationship progressed. The book started off with her despising him and then all of a sudden they are saying I love you and I'm like woah where did that come from. I felt like there was a lot of focus on a plot that I didn't need. I wanted more of their relationship and not the inner workings of the resort/side characters. Secondly, did I find this funny? Yes there were moments that were funny. But I also didn't connect with the FMC. And I think that is also my problem, she's a fun and vibrant character but there were moments where I am like she's acting like a pick me girl and I just can't relate. But honestly I just love a book that has a world building and character progression where you can see how their relationship has grown. The little we got with the flashbacks of what happened between them seemed like it should have been elaborated on. Also this is a dual POV, but it's mainly in Paige's POV with only a couple chapters in Cole's POV. Which I would have loved to see more of Cole's perspective.

Now I know not every book with be for everyone. For me this is a run of the mill. I enjoyed it but I didn't love it. I feel like this would be a good quick read on vacation but I wouldn't necessary stop talking about it with my friends. With that being said, these are my opinions and I know you may have a different opinion and absolutely love this book. I think that is why reading is so great because we all love different things!

*Thank you Grey's Promo and R.S. Grey for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts, opinions and review.

Cole is Paige's work nemesis, from the first day they meet, his cold demeanor is the exact opposite to her sunny one. Each day they throw barbs at one another and it's obvious to everyone around them (except them, it would seem) that they are made for one another. after a few vulnerable moments, Paige isn't sure that Cole really truly likes her, so she tries to protect herself by putting all the walls up and trying to find someone else to focus her attention on.
I really did enjoy the chapters we got to see from Cole's POV and I will admit, seeing Paige try to make Cole jealous, got a little cringey, but I lived for Cole. I loved his patience with her, his quiet brooding and his willingness to banter back and forth with her. He was so shy and like a little puppy I just wanted to hug. I love workplace romance, especially when it is enemies to lovers and the boy falls hard and first. So if those tropes are your jam, you need to check this out. 3.5 stars rounded up cause I really did love Cole.

The banter in this book gets it a 4 star rating! I laughed out loud so many times while reading about Paige and Cole’s interactions! Paige has a lot of cringeworthy moments but she is so endearing in her awkwardness that it makes her such a lovable character. I enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers plot, but thought that the time between when they recognized their feelings for each other to declaring their love was really fast, and it would have made more sense for them to fall into like long before that happened. I liked how the situation with their job played out and think the author did a great job having Cole and Paige tackle that fiasco as a team rather than going down the road of a third act breakup. This book is definitely a good pick if you want something fun and light!

3.5 stars. This was not my favorite by this author although I thought the second half of this novella was way better than the beginning. I came close to not finishing it as I just couldn’t get into the story. But this author is a favorite of mine and I think I’ve read most, if not all, of her work. So of course I finished it and was pleasantly surprised at how much better the second half was.

I enjoyed the characters in the end part of the book. In the beginning I was just a bit bored. I just didn’t know what was going to happen if anything. Never fear because the author added more to the plot and I had a better time with this read than what I thought I was going to have. Since it was a novella, I’m not going into the plot more. It is a romance and it features some pretty explicit spicy parts although I’ve read a lot more explicit books. That’s just a head’s up. I also think this could be categorized as a true rom-com.

Paige and Cole might be coworkers at the same beach resort but that is where their similarities end. Cole is a rule follower that always wears a suit, while Paige is happy to be outside leading groups in all sorts of excursions in the island.

I liked the premise of two opposite coworkers who hate each other but the execution of wasn't the best.

Thankfully (or not, depends how you see it ) a natural disaster forced them to share the same space and face some truths they both ignored up until that point. Unfortunately, the forced proximity came a bit too late, there wasn't much build up or a natural change from hate to love.

I found Paige very immature, her actions came in contrast with her words which made her an unreliable narrator.

The book is dual pov but the chapters aren't evenly distributed, so we only see part of what Cole is thinking. I did love the pining from this part but I also wanted him to act.

DNF… I tried so hard to get through. Made it 60% of the way and couldn’t read any further. The details of the story were good, but they were scattered throughout and it was hard to follow. It prevented me from getting to know the characters. I like to know why I’m rooting for a couple and 60% of the way in, I had no idea why I was rooting for them..

I've been a fan of R.S Grey's breezy, laden-with-crackling-chemistry works for half a decade. This book is definitely a case of He-Falls-First, and boy, he falls HARD! I totally commend how despite of being protective, Cole respected Paige's agency and choices.

As with most of the author's FMCs, Paige's thought process was a bit too erratic and she jumped to conclusions, especially regarding the MMC's motivations and behaviour. I often thought I was reading a YA novel during her POVs.

Memorable Quotes: There is a lot to like about working at this resort. Siesta Playa is known for its crystal clear water, white-sand beaches, luxury accommodations, and . . . grotesquely spoiled tourists, who all ascribe to the belief that their year’s worth of credit card points entitles them to nothing short of royal treatment.

For the record, this is my fourth apology, but it gets ignored like the first three. “You’re sorry? What am I supposed to do with a sorry? I flew all the way here from Miami, y’know.” That’s about a two-hour trip, runway to runway. With the way she emphasizes this point, you’d think she’d just backpacked here from a Tibetan mountaintop. “We’re so glad you came all this way, and I understand why you’re upset.” No, we’re not—no, I don’t. “I apologize again, on behalf of the entire resort team.” Actually, we all collectively want to banish you from the premises. “And, of course, we’re happy to offer you and your husband excursion vouchers—or would you two enjoy a private beach dinner instead? Courtesy of the resort, of course.” Giving in like this—rolling over and taking it—is resort policy. Just give the high-maintenance sociopaths what they want in order to defuse the situation before the other guests (the ones whose parents loved them) notice. I hate it. In quick succession, she pounds her pointer finger down on the desk like it’s a woodpecker made out of Vienna sausages. “I can eat dinner on the beach anywhere. I want to see some damn whales! Like I was promised!” One of the excursions offered here at Siesta Playa is a guided marine-life tour where guests have the opportunity to see dolphins, reef sharks, sea turtles, and potentially whales. During the high season, from January through early April, humpback whales swim through the Turks Island Passage and give birth at Salt Cay. But seeing as how it’s mid-August . . . the whales are otherwise occupied elsewhere, doing whale things. A fact made abundantly clear to any of our guests who might have their sights set on seeing a majestic humpback this time of year, including Mrs. Daugherty. “I. Want. Whales,” she demands again, enunciating each word like a grown-up version of Veruca Salt.

“Who. Else. Would. I. Want?” I demand. Camila smirks. Oh no. Absolutely not. We’re not playing this game again, where they throw out subtle hints that maybe I detest Cole a little more than normal, that I talk about him, complain about him, to an unhealthy degree. So what if hating him is my third-favorite hobby, right behind disliking him and loathing him? It’s important to have interests! “So, just to be clear, you wouldn’t care if Tamara dated Cole?” Lara wonders.

She shivers and rubs her hands up and down her forearms, trying to warm up. “Bit chilly in here, no? Andbeforeyoureply,” she amends quickly, forming one long rambling word to get the sentiment out as fast as possible. “I was talking to myself.”

My thoughts: 🔖Page 26 of 247 Chapter Four PAIGE - This is hilarious. I'm only stopping to go to a book discussion. Plus I need to spread out my Kindle reading.
🔖103 Chapter Thirteen COLE - This was going so well until we got the background of the rivalry and triple miscommunication.
🔖134 Chapter Seventeen COLE - I saw the Blaze situation a mile away, what I didn't see was a hurricane party, but this one seems like it would be fun.
🔖182 [in the middle of Chapter Twenty-One 4 pages from] Chapter Twenty-Two PAIGE - I had to leave promptly.

This was good, not as cool as Caribbean Crush, but enough to explore the rest of the catalog.
