Tin is the first book in the Faeries of Oz series written by Candace Robinson and Amber R. Duell. It releases in the late fall of 2020, and I read an ARC of this one and Lion, the prequel to the series. I've always been a fan of the Wizard of Oz, but now my interest is even more renewed. Who wouldn't love a much more adult-themed version of hungry and vengeful cast of thrilling characters. So.. shall we dive in?
To catch us all up, not all is well in Oz after Dorothy wakes up from her visit. Was it real? If you've read more books in the series, or you've seen Wicked, you know a lot more than most. But this takes the story into a whole other dimension. What if the there more than two wicked witches? How about if Oz weren't such a nice man? And when Dorothy leaves, who would have known the place turned so deadly? Yep... Dorothy left a mess behind, and the trio of Lion, Crow, and Tin couldn't fix it. Glinda tried, but the other witches became too strong in the fight for control. Just how do all the faeries keep this place in line? Well... you'll have to find out.
This is not your children's version of the story. In the prequel, we read about Lion's sexual rampage with a certain witch. In Tin, we know certain parts of him are not made of tin... and he is hungry for something, only who would've thought it would be Dorothy! She's all grow up now, early twenties, and even she has an appetite for the flesh. When she finds herself back in Oz, nothing makes sense. Lion and Tin are fighting over who will either love her or kill her. Crow has other things to consider when it comes to Dorothy's new quest. Especially when the truth about where she really comes from finally gets outed. Holy @#&! This was unexpected, but I dare say.... if you can deal with a complete re-telling of the story, want to mix the classic innocence with murder, lust, and revenge... you will find a new series to crave.
While I've read several of Robinson's books before, this was the first set with a new co-writer, Amber R. Duell. The story is seamless, so I can't tell that two different authors were involved. The imagination is top notch. The crossing of genres keeps it flowing very quickly. Honestly, it only took two hours to read, and it's over 200 pages long. I didn't want to put it down, and now I have to wait until 2021 for the next book in the series. Looks like there will be four so far... can't wait! Definitely read the prequel first, and you'll know if this series is for you! Congrats to the authors on what looks like a great success coming their way.

Think, dark and sexy fae meets Return to Oz!

Not gonna lie, I've obsessed over this book since when I found out it existed, and that pretty cover surely did nothing to help tame my obsession.
The Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz were two of my favorite movies when I was a kid, the second in particular, and finding out there was a retelling out there that not only featured fae but that was pretty grimy and exceptionally spicy, too...well, it definitely felt like a dream come true.
Tin is an incredibly detailed and pretty dark retelling, where both the hot, broody and murderous
I didn't expect it to be so dark and gruesome and creepy, to be honest, and I can't say it's a bad thing because I like these aspects in my fae stories; the Wheelers, for example, are just as freaking creepy as they are in the movie and I remember having nightmares about them when I was little.
Yes, I'm praying that they stay out of my dreams, this time around.
Anyway...
I loved every single bit of this story - the dynamics between the main characters and the secondary ones was probably the thing I liked the most -, and it only took me almost a week to finish it because I wanted to savor it slowly.
There was so much going on, and even if I didn't always like the characters' decisions, I was pretty hooked most of the time.
I would have loved to know more about what happened to Oz once Dorothy left, instead of having only hinted bits and short info, but I overall think this is just as great as retellings can be.
I also thought that maybe the relationship between Tin and Dorothy could have been explored differently; I'm, in fact, not really a fan of how they went from enemies, to attraction, to real love trademark, and it's got nothing to do with the lenght of the book. It just was too slow at the start and too rushed, all of a sudden.
I've got to say, though, that the book in its entirety was an awesome read, with the coolest story and amazingly crafted characters, so I'll go with my mood and overlook some technicalities in favor of rating this based on how this made me feel.
And, in case you're wondering, I'm feeling pretty good, right now.

Every so often a book comes along that sounds perfect for me. Tin promised to be that book. It appeared to tick so many of my boxes – a dark retelling of a well-known story, a new fantasy world to enjoy, and the promise of an entire series of the goodness – yet I found this one difficult to get into.
After reading Lion, the prequel, my expectations had dropped somewhat. I thought the prequel would be a dark and sexy introduction to the world, but it felt awkward to me. I did, however, hope it was simply a case of my lack of love for prequels influencing my view. Alas, Tin was a longer version of the things that felt awkward about the prequel.
The Faeries of Oz series is an interesting idea, but it’s too underdeveloped for me to love it. There are numerous references to the world, details that leave you curious, but nothing was ever clearly explained. There is the Oz we know from the classic story, and then there is this. It differs, a lot, but those differences are brushed over in ways that leave more questions than answers. It’s a world I could have easily fallen in love with, but it never came to life in the way it could have.
Then there was the romance. I never felt the connection between the two characters, yet it did not stop their relationship from playing out in a predictable way. I would have been able to deal with that, but the story was filled with what makes Maas so popular but I find cringey. The awkward sex scenes. Fans of Maas are likely to enjoy the fae romp, but I could not deal with it.
I think this is one of those cases where I expected too much. It had the potential to be amazing – there were some three-star moments when I was curious about the story – but it didn’t work for me. It evidently works for a lot of people, but I’m not the right reader for the series. To me, it feels like it’s trying too hard to be dark and sexy and is missing the mark with both. Perhaps my standards are too high, so – as with the prequel – it is worth taking my thoughts with a pinch of salt, especially with how there are so many that do seem to adore this.

I liked the idea of the Oz characters being fae and Dorothy returning from Kansas, but something was definitely amiss. Oh, I know: it was the lack of chemistry between her and Tin. The whole book felt rushed, too.

I went into this expecting a fun romp through an oz sequel with maybe some tam lin vibes, and okay, that's on me. It's never actually a Tam Lin retelling. I should know this by now.
This was at least competently edited on a technical level even if every character is terrible, Ozma is completely rewritten, and nothing makes sense.
But again, I should have known this would happen. I am simply too queer for these sorts of books. I just didn't expect to care too much about people to read these sorts of books.

I really enjoyed Tin and how different all the characters had become since Dorothy had left to go home Dorothy herself had changed a lot and had a few hardships herself to deal with before going back to Oz I would recommend any readers that enjoy retelling to read this book.

The Oz built here is awesome. Different from what I've known so far but that is not a bad thing. The author's took something classic and made it entirely their own. I just had my little difficulties with Dorothy and Tin. Their relationship felt at the same time rushed and dragged out. Just like the story did. I don't know if that even makes sense but it felt like that.
The writing was great and I loved the journes and getting to know this version of Oz more - I've wanted to do that eversince I read the prequel. I will gladly read more - I've started peaking into Crow immediately if that tells you anything.

I never imagined The Wizard of Oz could be anything other than an amusing children's tale, but Robinson and Duell managed to breathe new life into this classic story, pitching a grown-up Dorothy back into the land of Oz.
This steamy retelling had me falling for a tinman. A tinman?? What's next in my heart's future, falling for a scarecrow?

La verdad es que estoy asombrada de lo mucho que me gustó esta novela. De hecho, me encantó. Tin es la primera obra que leo de Candance Robinson y Amber R. Duell, creo que ambas autoras tienen mucho potencial. Sin embargo, creí que no me llegaría porque no me considero fan del Mago de Oz. Es una historia que nunca me ha llamado mucho la atención. Ni he visto las películas, ni he leído el cuento, pero creo que lo que más me agrado fueron los personajes más maduros combinados con una trama muy atrapante.
En serio, estoy sorprendida de que me gustara. Antes de acabar el libro, ya sabía que le iba a dar 5 estrellas y, aunque no es una obra perfecta o que cambiará mi vida, aun así considero que me entretuvo.
Trama: Una mezcla adecuada de misterio, romance y magia. Creo que el el hecho de que la historia se centrará en los hechos después de todo lo que sucedió con Dorothy cuando era una niña. Ahora presenta a una Dorothy más adulta, con problemas realmente serios. Creo que las autoras supieron combinar muy bien los elementos y sucesos del cuento infantil con esta nueva trama más oscura y adulta, llena de nuevos descubrimientos, secretos y magia.
Escenario: Kansas y Oz. En Kansas no sucede gran cosa, así que todo se resume en Oz. Es un escenario con mucho potencial, sobre todo, porque ya no es el mismo Oz de color de rosa, cálido y lleno de ternura y magia que Dorothy dejó atrás. Ahora es frío, hostil, tenebroso, lleno de criaturas peligrosas y villanos. Simplemente me encantó. Es como una versión gótica de Oz sin el sendero de ladrillos amarillos (o como sea que se llamara).
Personajes: Amé a Dorothy. Y eso sí que es una sorpresa porque siempre me pareció muy infantil y sosa en el cuento, pero esta Dorothy adulto me fascinó. Era fuerte, valiente, cariñosa y leal. Y su transformación... wow... eso simplemente no lo esperé, pero fue algo muy muy positivo.
Luego está Tin. ¡OMG! También me encantó. Un protagonista sin corazón, torturado, oscuro, un asesino sin remordimientos. Fue demasiado genial. Hizo latir mi corazón y su evolución a lo largo de la historia también fue sorprendente.
En cuanto al resto de personajes secundarios, primero los buenos, como Crow creo que estuvieron bastante a la altura. Hubo personajes que aparecieron al final que me dejaron muy intrigada, pero ya veremos que sucede en el resto de novelas. Los villanos también fueron muy completos. Odié a Lion y Langwidere con todo mi corazón, eran simplemente malos y detestables.

Romance: Leí esta novela buscando cobre y encontré oro. Esa es la definición de cómo me sentí al leer este romance. ME ENCANTÓ. ¿Quién hubiera imaginado un romance entre Dorothy y el hombre de hojalata? Pues yo no y me sorprendió tanto como me cautivo. Esta novela no es muy larga y, aun así, no sentí que el romance fuera precipitado o exagerado. No, fue adecuado. Muy bien equilibrado con dosis de tensión y sensualidad. Tin y Dorothy tenían una química casi asfixiante. Estaba comiendome las uñas porque estuvieran juntos y fueran felices. No puedo quejarme en este punto, las alturas me dieron exactamente lo que esperaba, un romance tierno mezclado con el smut necesario en una historia de este género.
En general, debo decir que estaré leyendo nuevas historias de estas dos autoras fabulosas. Ha sido una sorpresa muy grata y desde ahora ya estoy esperando el libro de Crow y también el de Ozma. Estoy muy emocionada.

Dark, gritty, and imaginative! A primal Oz like you've never seen before.
Dorothy Gale's life hasn't been the same since returning from Oz. Everyone assumes she's insane for talking about the Emerald City, but Dorothy knows the truth. Ten years later, Dorothy is struggling to keep the family farm afloat, but when the bank shows up, she wishes she were back in Oz. LO AND BEHOLD! A portal opens...
Hooked yet? I was!
After stepping through the portal, things really pick up in the book. Massive world-building takes place to ensure we believe this truly is Oz, but not like the one we [or even Dorothy], remembers. Robinson & Duell effortlessly painted a vivid, decaying world in a way that was quite hauntingly beautiful! Tim Burton springs to mind with some of their eerie creations such as Wheelers [disfigured/distorted beings who have wheels for hands and feet, plus their mouths are sewn shut!] Honestly, the world aspect was eerily wonderful, verging on an almost horror-like setting.
Dorothy starts off as a naïve character that continuously makes poor decisions, but I'll say she develops into a powerful character. One that we can see blossom right before our eyes! She isn't the only familiar character that sweeps onto the scene, we see Tin, Lion, and Crow!
Tin's life changed just like Dorothy's, except instead of a farmer–or even a smiling face–he's now the kingdom's fiercest assassin. Blood stains his hands and iron scars his face. I adored him so much. He's grumbly, takes no crap, and is a force to be reckoned with. Watching him interact with his mark, Dorothy, was really the highlight of the book for me NOT GONNA LIE HERE... -smooshes them together-
There are so many twists and turns, some I didn't see coming and phewwww...the last three quarters of the book flew by for me. I already want the second book in my hands [looking at you authors!]
Overall, I highly recommend this read for those looking for a true New Adult Dark Fantasy! There is romance in it, action, betrayal, gore, creepy creatures, and so many wonderful things about this book!

Oh man.
This is some next level fan fiction published as an original novel. It reads like a Wizard of Oz flavoured porno weeeeeeeeeeeee.

The revelation of Dorothy's parents was lacklustre. It could've been good but by that point I was just skimming pages.
This is some next level fan fiction published as an original novel. It reads like a Wizard of Oz flavoured porno weeeeeeeeeeeee.

This sexy, colorfully creative send-up of the world of Oz was the PERFECT pandemic escape. Set ten years in the future, Dorothy is a twenty-something struggling farmer who is abruptly whisked back to an Oz in turmoil. By the tin man. Like you've never seen him (picture the Witcher - with pointed ears - cast in Oz - and yes, he's that delicious ;) Authors Robinson and Duell have wickedly gleeful fun messing with the Oz of our memories and re-envisioning of story and characters with a multitude of delightful, unexpected twists and turns that are always entertaining, steamily sexy and sometimes flat-out brilliant. I particularly LOVED the witty sparring between Tin and Crow (picture an avian Wolverine playing the part of Scarecrow) and Tin's overall misanthropic testiness - he's the perfect, foul-mouthed, delightfully taciturn anti-hero - I laughed out loud more than once. Can't wait to read the sequel, Crow. Thanks for the fun escape, Candace Robinson and Amber R. Duell :) #TeamTin

when i first came across this book, i was immediately intrigued by the cover and the concept—unfortunately, my high hopes were crushed after about two pages.
the writing itself is bland, and the pacing is just... off. i understand the desire to get to the exciting part of the story, but i feel that this book was in desperate need of better world building and more of a build up to the action. it felt like we were thrown into the middle of a sequel that we weren't given the first book for, and i found it boring and hard to become invested in.
it might have been more intriguing if (and i'm not usually one to suggest this) there were flashbacks to the FL's first time in oz, or otherwise SOMETHING to show how the characters even bonded in the first place. we're told that these characters all went on a heartwarming adventure together and are expected to just believe it. i know that this book operates on the premise that we already know the story of the wizard of oz, but this story doesn't follow that exact same storyline, and it felt like lazy writing to just say that the FL had been there before without actually having to describe it.
the characters themselves aren't any better. the ML, while i liked the idea of him, just wasn't written well. he's flat and wishy washy, going from hating (?) / not caring about the FL one second to suddenly desiring her and deciding to save her life for no reason at all. the FL wasn't any better, as far as i'm concerned; she has no personality and is incredibly 2D. also, are we really expected to believe that she's from the 1920s?
the lack of chemistry between the FL and ML is a whole other issue that i don't have the energy to dig into, but just know: there's literally no chemistry.
there were other issues i had, too, like the gore thrown in seemingly for shock value—i love a good twisted world as much as the next person, but the gore in this book was described so blandly that i couldn't bring myself to care. neither could the FL, it seems, since she reacted so weakly to all of the decapitated bodies and whatnot that she stumbled across. then there's also how one of the characters just randomly admits that he's the FL's father, which is so ridiculous and out of place at the point where he admits it.
in short: great concept, poor execution. i only wish some more world building and editing had gone into this, because it really has the potential to be amazing.

If you're going to depend on a premade world at least bring something to story. And dear God, please give the main couple CHEMISTRY.

Tin will bring you to the wonderful world of Oz.
It's a different take than Dorothy Must Die but also similar since you still get to meet a different version of Dorothy. I'll admit that it was interesting to read and to see a certain romance blossom. I did think some of the twists were a bit weird but that's mostly because I wasn't expecting them to happen.
Maybe the sequel will make a bit more sense as to why since it's about Crow but I'm also not holding my breath at the same time. I think I'm just going to sit back and watch everything unfold. Especially after that little epilogue/cliffhanger. I need answers before I form more questions.. but that would be too easy - right?

I've been reading more and more on my kindle here recently because it's lighter, has a built-in light, and it's so much cheaper to buy ebooks. But I always get a physical copy of my favorite books. It makes me happy to see them on my shelves.
So you're probably wondering what the heck this has to do with anything. Well then, let me tell you: 100 pages into this book, I went to Amazon and bought the paperback. After finishing the book, I checked to see how long it would take to get to me because I HAVE to have this one for my favorites shelf.
If you like dark and gritty male heroes, Wizard of Oz, or just well-done romance with great characters: this is for you! It's also only a little over 200 pages so, you can fly through it in less than a day! The perfect read to pull you out of 2020 and into a better land.

Tin was fantastic action packed retelling of #WizardsofOz that revolved around Dorothy and Tin. It was about good vs evil, finding a place to belong, family, friendship, betrayal and love. This should be to read in order as prequel novella tells where it all started.
World was brilliant and was heart of the book. There were flying monkeys, cursed faeries, poisonous fairy fruits, deadly and creepy wheelers, bad witches, headless witch who decapitated beautiful women so she could change heads like clothes, lying and pretentious Oz, glamor, and magic. It was all amazing to read. I liked how each territory were described and what it had to suffer due to clash for power and lands. There was lots of killing and so much blood and gore. It’s definitely not the world from children’s world of Oz.
There were many twists and turns. I could guess turns but not what waited after that. End was perfect with happy ending and upcoming journey.
Overall, Tin was fast paced, dark and hot new adult fantasy filled with immersive world, creepy creatures and many surprising turns.

- A main character bordering on Mary Sue territory (she's not like other girls, she has a gun and carries a machete *eye roll*)
- A one dimensional horny love interest who at one point literally has a hard on while digging a mass grave (wtf)
- Unrealistic dialogue (set in the 1920s but you wouldn't guess if it wasn't for the singular mention a quarter of the way through; literally no one in the 20s spoke or acted the way these characters do)
- Twists that fell flat (the truth of Dorothy's parentage was supposed to be a huge twist but it was just casually dropped into conversation and no one really cared so I didn't either)
- A weak plot

I have never read a fairy tale re-telling before, and I have become a fan of Candace and Elle. This book was fun to read, especially as it was a dark fantasy that any adult could enjoy. Tin was a delicious read with just enough spice and action to keep you on your toes. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

A dark and sexy retelling of the classic story of Oz. Dorothy is all grown up and her friend the Tin Man has lost his way and his heart. With a heart of stone, he has turned into a ruthless assassin. It was definitely an easy and entertaining read. Perfect for a quick evening break where I just wanted to relax into something fun and different. There were definitely cheesy parts but overall the story was entertaining enough for me to finish it in one sitting and it was a fun way to see what happens to Dorothy when she grows up. Fans of the Tin Man miniseries and also any Wizard of Oz fans will enjoy this steamy romance story set in the beloved Oz.

TIN.... Tin, tin, tin, how much has he changed after all these years. In this Wizard-of-Oz-inspired story, Tin isn't the shy man we met in the original story. Now, several years have passed and he's turned into a real man, an assassin who only cares about money. So, when also re-imagined Lion hires Tin to capture Dorothy for a big chunk of dough, Tin is IN. What could he lose? Capture a little girl? Piece of emerald pie.
On the other hand, Dorothy has changed, too. Remember that sweet farm girl? Not anymore. Now, she's grown into a strong gorgeous woman with financial problems. Luckily, she finds a gate to Oz and escapes to the only happy place she knows... or knew, because Ozland is a dump.

Quick breezy read. I enjoyed this take on Oz. It was really interesting to see how things had changed since Dorothy head left. I wasn't a huge fan of the twist between Crow and Dorothy though. I don't know, it just seemed weird and unfitting. With it being only a little over 200 pages, I also felt like everything happened too fast. But at the same time, most of this was Tin and Dorothy traveling from one inn to another, so if it would have taken longer, I fear I may have gotten bored. So it's a catch 22 there. I didn't hate this, but I didn't love it either

Wow, I was instantly obsessed with this book! I loved the continued tale of Wizard of Oz with twists on each character, especially Dorothy, who, ten years after saving Oz and defeating the Wicked Witch of the West, is alone, her aunt and uncle are dead, and her farm is about to be reclaimed by the bank. Not to mention that everyone thought she was crazy when she came back from Oz the first time. But everything in Oz has changed, including the Tin Man (AKA Tin)--now a cold-hearted assassin. His newest target? Dorothy.
The tension between Dorothy and Tin sizzles but that's not the only thing that carries this book through. The new threat of a witch who cuts off heads and wears them and wants to rule Oz is fascinating too. The second half of the book felt a little rushed, and I would have loved for the tension to be drawn out a bit more with Tin and Dorothy, but overall, I thought it was a super fun page-turner!

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great drama and romance with wonderful world building.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
