Rebecca Rule is the sheriff of Refuge, New Hampshire. Her biggest concern is the rowdy summertime revelers making their way up from Massachusetts and New York. With most of the town’s residents in neighboring Ashland, for the Fourth of July fireworks show, Refuge is quiet. That is, until the Baptist Church’s bell starts ringing—on its own.
The bell chimes faster and faster, reaching a frenetic pace, as though rung by the Devil himself. But the bell is just the beginning. The air shimmers. The night-time sky fills with a burning red aurora. The moon, previously a crescent, is now full. And just hours after dusk, the sun returns to the sky, revealing an endless desert where there was once a mountainous pine forest.
Rule must guide the confused and frightened residents of Refuge through the first terrifying hours of acclimating to this horrifying new environment, while protecting them from inhuman dangers both inside and outside of the town’s newly clean-cut borders.
In a world gone haywire, only one thing is certain, no one in Refuge will ever forget the night of the blood sky.

This is the first part of a serialised novel and, boy, does this start suck you right in! I'm glad I've waited until the last part is about to be released, in order to read them all quickly, without having to wait. Lots of mystery, action and a bit of horror thrown in - can't wait to the next one.
Dan I wish I knew why the bell was toiling in the book..part 1 of the refuge story and it's very interesting sci-fi horror feel to it. This introduce to the characters on a hot July 3rd day. The day before the 4th of july. I know I know you know what comes after but I just put it there. But I would not get close to the sheriff because something happens
But in my honest opinion is that it's other earth's because they can breath the air in these worlds. The next thing was the creatures were awesomely (my made up word so screw intellectual snobs) described in the book. But I won't give too much away
The church bell rings and the whole town moves from one dimensions of other earth's or other planets. But I won't know what's going on until I read more of the story. So pick up the series or just the book and enjoy the first story of Refuge. But it's a good read and I rate it 5 dimensions out of 5.
I could not put this book down or read the series fast enough. I read all the books at once; I don't know if I could have waited for each book to come out (even though it was only a couple weeks between each release). If you want a fun, fast paced, insane nightmare filled book, this is the one for you. Robinson and crew did an amazing job on this series and you will not be disappointed. This would make an awesome movie or mini-series, as long as Robinson was involved.
What is the church bell ringing, where are they, what's gonna happen next? Hold on for a great ride!
Book 1 does more than build the world, it sets the hook and launches this five book series by setting an aggressive storytelling pace. For a book to be good, in my opinion, it has to be based on characters than you love and/or love to hate. Night of the Blood Sky makes good on the strong characters from chapter one. Plus, what impresses me about the overall tale is that each book is a self contained story of its own. While each contributes to the greater overall Refuge serial, each episode is a separate, digestible tale with its own beginning, middle, and end.
Refuge: Night of the Blood Sky is the first "episode" of a serialized novel and it is an amazing origin. We are introduced to the town of Refuge in New Hampshire where one 4th of July the chiming of a church bell precedes a night of horror, mystery, and the loss of preconceived ideals. Jeremy Bishop grabs you at the beginning and never lets you go. A fast read with plenty of great characters, action, and the horrifying thought of changing realities. Enjoy and have fun for the read is well worth it!
Refuge warps you away!! Jeremy Bishop and Jeremy Robinson spin a classic small town horror tale but with its own warped personality. Book 1 sets the scene and has some awesome and creepy moments. The characters are genuine and not just bodies for the typical horror meat grinder that is so common with books and movies these days. Now, onto Refuge book 2: Darkness Falls. Hurry, buy this one and catch up!
What a wild ride. I'm so pleased that I don't have to wait for the next instalment, I'm starting it as soon as I've written this. Once again the Jeremy's have introduced us to great characters and a great concept. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.
This is the first part of a five book series. Jeremy and four other writers wrote a five part novella series. So what can you expect. Well you can expect a thriller novel with some sci-fi elements plus some horror. We've got this town with a bunch of characters (many) that are transported into another world, dimension, time (we don't know) but stuff is wrong, like the stars and the moon. At the same time they are besieged by some beings that come out from the sand and also from within. There are very cool characters and by the end one dies unexpectedly. IF I had a complain would be the pacing of the story (sometimes very fast, sometimes crawl) and placing. The characters jump from one place to the other like all is very near with no sense of time... Then there are some characters that were some place and then they are in another with no explanation. Very odd placing\timing.
But overall don't get me wrong. Read in 2H. My goal is to read the full book this month. I will read one of this novellas in-between larger novels.
A Quaint town by the name of Refuge, nestled amongst a forest in stunningly beautiful Vermont, and it's residents are in for the shock of their lives when the only church in town begins tolling it's bells by its own accord.
Vividly painted characters must put their differences aside and work together to cope and try to make sense of the craziness that is affecting their town and it's residents.
I am thrilled with the concept behind Refuge, the wicked and formidable creatures, frightening action, humorous residents and fast paced reading in the first of a five book series. Looking so very forward to beginning the next book in line and reading what Jeremy Bishop/Robinson and co-authors have produced with their creative and unique visions.
Five stars for Refuge due to it's unique story-line, well developed and mostly likeable characters (which I am thrilled to learn more about as this series continues), and the strongly formed action scenes.
This book reads like the first episode in a miniseries, but I guess that's the point since it's part of a serial. Personally, I would have enjoyed a longer book that got more into the story and into the characters. The ending didn't feel like a cliffhanger so much as a conclusion to a short story. There were a couple of awkward sentences and plot holes, but they were small. The space similes were a bit heavy handed, but overall I thought it was a pretty good story.
I listened to the audio version and I thought that Jeffrey Kafer did a pretty good job. The narration could have used some more inflections, but the pacing was nice.
An interesting story.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
This story starts in a nice sleepy New Hampshire town. Most of the residents have left to town, going to a bigger city to watch fireworks for the 4th of July. The sheriff is walking strolling around checking parking meters. Talking with citizens. The church bell starts ringing and then the town is surrounded by sand and the sky is red.
Jeremy comes up with some great creatures. The characters are very believable. It was easy to identify with the primary ones. The adventure is fantastic. However, one member of the community doesn’t make it.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes monsters, alien worlds, and a good read.
Just finished this one and all I can say is day-am! Jeremy Bishop brings you into a small town where everyone knows each other and life is simple...until one day it's not. Watch as life in this small town gets turned upside down, and be prepared to hold your breath and shed a few tears in the process! If you have not read this one yet, I highly suggest you get to it!
I wasn't sure what to think of this book when I started reading it. It sounds really good, but has the potential to be really bad. I'm happy to say my mind was blown. This was a super entertaining read and literally had me on the edge of my seat. I'm half way through the second book and can't wait to find out what the hell is going on in the town of Refuge. Fantastic read!
A quick read--essentially a novella, the first part of a serial story about a small town that is transported into another dimension. Not hard to read and fairly entertaining, but not particularly well-written, and definitely not satisfying on its own. Better to read the whole series I suppose, but this small taste wasn't really enough to make me want to come back for the whole thing.
What a great start to a 5 part series! I was completely engaged with this story from the start. The characters are wonderful and I am anxious to see what happens to them as we go. I have all 5 audiobooks ready to go and I can tell this is going to be a non-stop adventure!
The main summary of Refuge makes it sound a little questionable. I would suggest the reader give it a chance any way. This section, Night of the Blood Sky, was VERY good. I felt like I was right there due to the quality of the description as well as the development of the characters. If you get to the end, you'll understand when I say that Rule was the best of them. I'm going to keep going with this "experimental" novel collection and can't wait to see where it goes next!
This was a great story or, start of a story. I had a little trouble keeping track of who some of the characters were. I don’t know if their voices weren’t unique enough or if it was just that I wasn’t paying enough attention. The alien/supernatural/apocalyptic elements were pretty awesome. I’m already reading the next book.
Initially I did not think I would like this this book, but I have liked everything else he has written so I went with it. Sure enough the story and characters draw you an and the story keeps getting weirder. I can't wait to read the others.
I'm not all that into short stories as they all seem to end just as things get interesting and this one is no exception, however, this story is interesting enough to have left me wanting more. I will be ready the next entry in this series
I really enjoyed this first book in the series. The plot was well paced and very intriguing. It held my attention from start to finish, and definitely made me want to read more in the series. The characters were interesting, and I wanted to know about them as well.
The town of Refuge is swept into chaos after the local church bell rings incessantly. The sky turns the color of blood, and the local pastor says its the sign of the Devil. This is the first book in a very intriguing series of short novellas, and readers will be craving the others. If you don't mind that you have to purchase more afterwards, you'll enjoy the beginning. If you do mind, then simply purchase the book in its entirety and enjoy. You won't regret it. Can't wait to find out what happens next.
I knew immediately after I finished the first installment of this series that the rest of my weekend was ruined. While I admittedly have no idea what is going on in the bucolic town of Refuge, it's apparently pretty bad.
Mr. Robinson quickly piles on mystery, tension, and a mysterious sense of wonder in the opening volume of this serial. I'm looking forward to reading the entire series. Enthusiastically recommended.
A great start to what is a very interesting premise. At the strike of a church bell, the world suddenly changes and the poor town of Refuge is caught up with it. Without out knowing what lies in the desert, before the change a dense forest, the people of Refuge must now figure out how to adapt to this change and the many challenges and dangers it brings. I can't wait to see where the rest of this goes. Fascinating characters and interesting plot, I was hooked instantly.
I loved this read, except for the length. Welcome to Refuge New Hampshire, a nice little town although probably a little boring for most. The something happens to change all that and it will take the sheriff Becky Rule, her deputies and anyone else they can grab to protect the town from the supernatural horror that has changed the peaceful town into their worse nightmare.
4 solid stars. I originally got the first book of this series for free, thinking I'd try it but not having high hopes of being impressed, & before I had finished that first book I had purchased the set of all 5 stories. Shades of Stephen King, & the characters all won me over in various ways, despite each piece of the story being written by a different author. recommend!
I read this book in one sitting; couldn't put it down. I am at a loss to properly describe it. It is an amazing, tightly crafted story that keeps you guessing. The story starts quickly and keeps moving at a fast pace. I am looking forward to reading the next installment.
This book is powerful. I reminds me of Stephen King when he still had editors willing to whittle his prose.
This is a monster story of the old fashioned kind.LOVED it! Jeffrey Kafer does a wonderful job narrating this book! A small town,a sheriff, fireworks and an unexplained phenomenon..who can ask for more!
