It's the first of a series, so the end is not an end. That said, this is a thoroughly entertaining fantasy read with a nice central concept, good characters - a pleasant mix of well-wrought personalities that I cared about, I wanted to know what was going to become of them all. There's plenty of myth and magic, but with with a light touch, none of the usual high-blown Fantasy nonsense.
It is rather slow to start and doesn't pick up much pace along the way - which is fine if, like me, you enjoy a bit of world building and getting to know the characters. It keeps you reading, it keeps you thinking. My only true gripe is with the descriptions of time. The author has invented his own calendar and clock for his world. The calendar is rather fine, with Days of the Sun and Water and Owl and so on. Time in general is given in millidays, decidays, Dekades, and so on. There's a glossary of terms that explains it all and... I appreciate this as part of Pierre Grimbert's world building process, but I found it unnecessary and more than a bit irritating. It didn't ruin the book for me, it's not a `biggie', but the thing would definitely have been better without it.
In short, The Secret of Ji is not the best fantasy novel I've ever read, but I enjoyed it, and would certainly read the next in this series.

The setup for The Secret of Ji: Six Heirs sounds almost like an overly complex joke: “A barbarian, a mage, a bard, a warrior, and two confused teenagers walk into a tavern filled with assassins…” Some might say that this makes for a bad story, but in this case the fantasy tropes serve as helpful guides as the author introduces his readers to a broad cast of characters. This book isn’t the most original or captivating fantasy tale you will ever read, but it is more than sufficient to fill the gap while you await the next epic fantasy novel from your favorite author.
The novel gets off to a great start by introducing the history of the heirs to the secret of Ji. Many generations ago, representatives from across the world gathered on this small island to witness a mysterious event. Not all who attended this meeting survived, and of those who did, all resolved to never reveal the secret of what they witnessed to anyone except their heirs, who were sworn to secrecy. Now, somebody has hired the most deadly assassins in the known world to kill every person who is an heir to the secret of Ji.
That is where our prototypical characters come in. Six of the heirs to the secret of Ji survive the assassination attempts and, eventually, band together to try and find out who wants them dead, and why. Corenn is a leader the matriarchal government of her homeland who also happens to be a mage, though her skills as a politician and diplomat are more significant than her magical powers. Her niece, Léti, is a frustratingly unpredictable teenage girl, who is pursued by an equally flakey, but more determined fisherman named Yan. These three are all guarded by Grigan, a solid warrior who could have come from virtually any fantasy novel, but serves well in his roll as protector and sometimes mentor. Rounding out the group are Rey, a delightfully roguish actor, and Bowbaq, a gigantic, pacifist barbarian who can communicate with animals.
The author’s narrative style is very comfortable to listen to, with the close third-person perspective of the narrative slipping easily from one character’s mind to the next, depending on the dramatic needs of each scene. This fluidity of narration was a little surprising to me after the several first person, or strictly focused third person, stories I have read recently, but it serves the story well. Other than Léti, who I feel was underused except in the introduction and final pages of the book, each character has a distinct voice and perspective. The passages which follow Rey and Bowbaq are particularly delightful.
Now for the complaints, which are thankfully few. The story begins with a first person narration from Léti, which recounts the history of the secret of Ji in the form of a memoir or letter. This tale is interrupted at several points by scenes that set up the assassination attempts on the heirs to the secret which, while well written, feel completely out of place. Better to have put these scenes together in a second prologue, or in the first chapter, than to have them interrupt what should have been an unbroken narrative. As I mentioned before, most of the characters are well-written and distinct, but I do feel that Léti was underused for much of the story. This is clearly the first book in a series, which will likely follow her as she grows more mature, but that does not excuse her changeable, even vapid, attitudes throughout the middle of the story. Finally, the author describes the world as using a somewhat metric calendar in which weeks, days, and even hours are broken into units of ten. The depth of world building here is quite good, and as I turn to a text version of the book to check my spelling of names, I find that the words are not so distracting in print, but in the audio version the frequent use of phrases like dékades (weeks of nine or ten days), decidays (hours), centidays (minutes) is distracting.
The Secret of Ji: Six Heirs is a recent translation of a French fantasy novel from 1997, which might explain some of the dated feel of the story, as well as the few awkward phrases that pepper the book. While it is not perfect, and the ending is clearly setting up a sequel, it is certainly an enjoyable fantasy adventure centered around a truly mysterious event. I look forward to the remaining volumes in the series being translated into English and will certainly find time to read them while awaiting new entries in more recent series.
The audiobook which I listened to was produced by BrillianceAudio and, other than the aforementioned frustrations with hearing certain phrases spoken aloud, was excellent. The narrator used distinct voices for each character, but avoided overly gravel, faux-feminine, or accented tones. Each disc opened and closed with a brief piece of music, which lasted just long enough to cue the listener that the time had come to change discs. I also appreciated that the last ten seconds of each disc were repeated at the beginning of the next disc, to draw the listener comfortably back into the story.

November 1, 2021Vorzeitig beendet nach 50 Seiten. Das Buch hat in mir leider null Interesse geweckt und mich nicht in seinen Bann gezogen. Die hier entworfene Welt ist für mich einfach überhaupt nicht greifbar gewesen, die Figurne wechseln ständig und ich habe sehr schnell den Überblick verloren. Schade.
Wer Interesse daran hat, das Geheimnis von Ji zu erkunden (was für mich nach wie spannend klingt), der möge es bitte versuchen, ich spreche ja nicht für alle Leser*innen.

Relecture plus de 15 ans après : ça fait du bien de se remettre tout ça en tête !
Cette série est toujours un coup de cœur, j’en suis très heureuse.
Les personnages sont attachants et évoluent, ils sont diversifiés, je les adore !
Ce premier tome ne couvre que le tout début de l’intrigue, c’est assez introductif pour le moment. J’ai hâte d’entrer dans le vif du sujet en relisant la suite, et d’autant plus parce que je sais ce qui m’attend !
Je recommande cette série (française) aux amateurs de fantasy, et surtout de fantasy « classique » (La bonne vielle quête c’est toujours une valeur sure) ainsi qu’aux débutants en littérature imaginaire : c’est une très belle façon de découvrir ce genre.
Cette série est toujours un coup de cœur, j’en suis très heureuse.

Nicht schlecht für einen ersten Band, aber da gibt es noch reichlich Luft nach oben! Die Charaktere sind sehr unterschiedlich, aber auch sehr unterhaltsam. Das Ende war sehr abrupt.

I picked this up because I got the second one in the series through Goodreads' First Reads program, and figured I should start at the beginning.
Apparently, Grimbert is a popular, prize-winning author in France - this is his first book to be translated into English. There are, at this time, no fewer than 13 books in this series.
'Six Heirs' is basically an introduction to the characters and the scenario. Long, long ago, a mysterious emissary invited representatives of local kingdoms to a meeting on a small island. The representatives - those that returned - never spoke of what transpired during that meeting, but they may have passed their secrets down to their descendants. A tradition has sprung up for the descendants to meet at the island every three years for what has become something like a festival and family reunion.
However, now, someone seems to have hired the sinister assassin-priests of Zuia to wipe out every 'heir.' As you might guess from the title, six of these random people get together and try to figure out what's happening to their friends and family, and why. We've got: the lovelorn village boy, Yan. The object of his affection, Leti. Her guardian, the older wise woman, Corenn. A peaceful giant, Bowbaq; a warrior: Grigan - and finally, the handsome and roguish actor, Rey.
Things unfold in a manner in concordance with the standards of the fantasy genre. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger - which makes me glad I've got the second book ready-to-read.

I found this story to be an interesting and fun read once I got into it. The hook for me was at the beginning of the first chapter when Bowbaq, one of the main characters, has a telepathic conversation with his horse. The action begins immediately with a band of assassins who are on a killing spree.
The mystery of the heirs unravels when a few of the zuu assassins are taken down, revealing who they are after. Unfortunately this first volume of the series doesn't tell us why they are after the heirs. However, readers will be rewarded with the discovery of who the heirs are and the significance of their links to the mysterious island of Ji.
There doesn't seem to be a singular main character but rather six of them, so young adult readers have a collection of them to identify with making this story appealing to a range of readers. I thought the character development between Yan and Lete worked well and I would have been more taken by the story had there been more dialogue and emotion created by the other characters.
Grimber left us with just enough mystery and revealed just enough promise of more magic to come in future volumes.

March 19, 2013I get that this is a bestseller in France, and maybe the original French provides some better narratives here, but between the somewhat stilted narrative (which may be a translation issue) and the plot that doesn't feel like it goes far, I tossed in the towel about a quarter way through. As an Amazon Prime Library read, it would probably be easy for me to pick up again if I wanted.

It could be the narration, but I am near rem sleep while listening. It has some stuff happening... just not interesting me at all. Maybe it's the characters? Might try print version, but I truly doubt it.

Dieses Buch hat mich an meine Grenzen gebracht.
Das passiert hin und wieder. Und das meist bei Fantasy-Romanen oder Thrillern. Denn beide Genres haben die Möglichkeit, großartige Bücher zu schaffen, die genreübergreifend Leser begeistern oder – was leider häufiger passiert als Möglichkeit 1 – den passionierten Leser in Verzweiflung stürzen.
Pierre Grimbert hat mit die Magier letzteres geschaffen und meine Gründe dafür sind derer vielfältig.
Vorab möchte ich euch warnen: Diese Rezension enthält starke Spoiler. Solltet ihr also das Buch lesen wollen, bitte klickt jetzt weg.

Man könnte sich jetzt mit der Story aufhalten, die – klassischem Dungeons & Dragons als Vorbild – über eine Questen-Fantasy-Reise nicht hinauskommt. Oder dem Wordbuilding, das – soweit es denn existiert – es nicht schafft, mehr als ein Waldweg und eine Insel zu sein. Oder dem Schreibstil, der besser zu einem Kinderbuch als Erwachsenenfantasy passen würde.
Doch über all das könnte ich hinwegsehen. Nur nicht über eins. Die Charaktere.
Mein Gott, die Charaktere.
Davon einmal abgesehen, dass sie wenig innovativ sind, sind sie allesamt unsympathisch, agieren nicht nachvollziehbar und sind zu einem großen Teil ziemlich dumm. Der Autor gibt keiner der Figuren Facetten, sondern nur Schablonen vor, wobei er es nicht schafft, dass sie sich auch daran halten.
Nehmen wir einen der „Helden“: Yan.
Yan ist 15, Fischer und – so beschreibt uns der Autor ihn – ein etwas fauler Träumer. Als er sich zur abenteuerlichen Reise aufmacht, um seiner Geliebten zu folgen, lernt er innerhalb mehr oder weniger eines Tages mit einem Bogen umzugehen. Während sie von Meuchelmördern verfolgt werden (die ziemlich schlecht in ihrem Job sind, da sie die Gruppe, die größtenteils aus nicht ausgebildeten Leuten besteht, nie finden), denkt Yan fast jede Sekunde nur daran, wie er seine Geliebte dazu bringen kann, ihn zu heiraten.
Beispiel: Als sich Yan allein aufmachen muss, die Lage in einer Stadt auszukundschaften, ist sein Gedanke: Er könnte zwar bald sterben (ich erinnere: Meuchelmörder), doch wenigstens würde jetzt etwas passieren.
Mein Gesicht: ?
Was man allerdings hier zugutehalten muss: wenigstens bleibt der Autor zumindest Yans Charaktere treu, denn dessen größtes – und gefühlt einziges – Problem, ist von Anfang bis Ende nur: wie schaffe ich es, dass sie mich heiratet?
Ich erinnere erneut: Meuchelmörder. Die, ganz nebenbei erwähnt, offenbar bereits mehr als 2/3 der Erben (Nachfahren einer bestimmten Gruppe, hier aber nicht wichtig, doch fast alle aus unserer Party gehören zu den Erben und sind somit das Ziel der Meuchelmörder) erfolgreich getötet haben. Wobei ich mich aber frage, wieso sie das geschafft haben, während die vollkommen unausgebildete Geliebte es schafft, mit einem Messer, mit dem sie nicht umgehen kann, drei bewaffnete Männer (zugegeben war das keine Meuchelmörder, sondern nur engagierte Schläger) mehr oder weniger zu besiegen oder zumindest so lange unter Kontrolle zu halten, bis Yan, der, wie schon erwähnt, ebenfalls „nur“ ein Fischer ist und vom Kampf keine Ahnung hat, ihr beisteht.
Das schlimmste aber, das, was mir regelmäßig Magenkrämpfe verursacht hat, waren die – und ich unterstelle dem Autor hier Absicht – als unfähig und hilflos dargestellten Frauen.
In der Gruppe befinden sich zwei davon: die junge Leti (die Geliebte, wir erinnern uns) und ihre Tante Corenn, die (soweit ich das verstanden habe, denn, wie ich gleich darlegen werde, handelt die gute Frau ganz und gar nicht so) eine Regierungsposition bekleidet und offenbar Magie anwenden kann (was sie aber irgendwie nie tut).
Anfangs scheint Corenn so etwas wie eine selbstbewusste Frau zu sein, die sich aufmacht, ihre Nichte (Leti) vor den Meuchelmördern zu retten. Doch als die beiden fliehen (seltsamerweise angeblich zu Pferde, wobei die Pferde allerdings plötzlich verschwinden – war das vielleicht ihre Magie?) und auf ihren Bekannten (den Krieger) treffen, scheint Corenn plötzlich ins Weibchen-Syndrom zu verfallen. Sie unterwirft sich dem Mann in jeder Entscheidung, was ich zu einem Teil auch nachvollziehen kann – schließlich ist er Krieger, sie nur Politikerin -, doch sie scheint zu nichts mehr eine Meinung zu haben. Zwischendurch war sie so unsichtbar, dass ich länger überlegen musste, als sie irgendwann wieder zu Wort kam: wer ist denn das jetzt?
Kommen wir zu Leti. Meinem „Liebling“.
Dieses Mädchen ist ein Grauen. Als Corenn und Leti überfallen werden und der Krieger zu ihrer Rettung eilt und von den Meuchelmördern nur ein paar Leichen übrig lässt (ein desertierter Krieger gegen drei voll ausgebildete Meuchelmörder, die im Auftrag einer Todesgöttin unterwegs sind - ich sage doch, sie sind hervorragend ihn ihrem Job), weint Leti. Alles ok, auch nachvollziehbar. Würde mich auch stark durchrütteln.
Fünf Seiten später jedoch schlägt sie mehr oder weniger vor, Reisenden, die ihnen begegnen, fast vorsorglich zu töten. Ich meine, ist doch egal, oder?
Als der Krieger ihr dann verbietet eine Waffe zu tragen (Frauen sollen nicht kämpfen, *gähn*, voll die Überraschung in diesem Buch …), ist sie eingeschnappt, beleidigt und schnippisch. Als ihr verboten wird, die Männer (*hüstel*) auf ihre gefährliche Mission zu begleiten, fängt sie an zu weinen.
Und das geht immer so weiter.
Gegen Ende könnte man meinen, dass es ein wenig besser wird – zumindest, was Leti betrifft. Sie benimmt sich etwas weniger wie eine zickige Kuh, was überhaupt der Grund war, dass ich die letzten fünfzig Seiten noch lesen konnte, ohne vollkommen auszurasten.
Denn zwischendurch machten mich die schwachen Frauenfiguren und der (ja! Ich sage es!) Sexismus, mit dem der Autor diese Welt beschreibt, wahnsinnig.
Ich will jetzt aber das Buch nicht nur verreißen, sondern auch aufzeigen, welche Autoren es besser machen.
George R. R. Martin – Das Lied von Eis und Feuer: Großartige und facettenreiche Figuren, egal ob Männer oder Frauen. Trotz der mittelalterlichen Welt haben wir viele starke Frauen (Daenerys, Arya, Cersei, Brienne, Cat, Asha, die Sandschlagen, Ygritte, usw.), die ihren eigenen Weg gehen.
Michael J. Sullivan – Ryiria: obwohl die zwei „Helden“ Männer sind, haben wir mit Arista eine Frau, die aus dem mittelalterlichen Schablonen ausbricht und von Band zu Band stärker wird. Klassische Questenfantasy und wahnsinnig spannend.

Marie Brennan – Lady Trents Memoiren: Isabella Trent geht als erste Drachenforscherin in einer Welt ähnlich dem viktorianischen England in die Geschichte ein und hat es dabei nicht leicht.
Damit will ich nicht sagen, dass gute Fantasy Feminismus unterstützen sollte - sie sollte unterhalten und einen in fremde Welten entführen! -, sondern dass man über Charaktere, die man im wahren Leben hassen würde, nicht in Büchern lesen will.
Es gibt so viel tolle Fantasy. Man sollte sich nicht mit schlechter abgeben.
Das passiert hin und wieder. Und das meist bei Fantasy-Romanen oder Thrillern. Denn beide Genres haben die Möglichkeit, großartige Bücher zu schaffen, die genreübergreifend Leser begeistern oder – was leider häufiger passiert als Möglichkeit 1 – den passionierten Leser in Verzweiflung stürzen.
Pierre Grimbert hat mit die Magier letzteres geschaffen und meine Gründe dafür sind derer vielfältig.
Vorab möchte ich euch warnen: Diese Rezension enthält starke Spoiler. Solltet ihr also das Buch lesen wollen, bitte klickt jetzt weg.

Man könnte sich jetzt mit der Story aufhalten, die – klassischem Dungeons & Dragons als Vorbild – über eine Questen-Fantasy-Reise nicht hinauskommt. Oder dem Wordbuilding, das – soweit es denn existiert – es nicht schafft, mehr als ein Waldweg und eine Insel zu sein. Oder dem Schreibstil, der besser zu einem Kinderbuch als Erwachsenenfantasy passen würde.
Doch über all das könnte ich hinwegsehen. Nur nicht über eins. Die Charaktere.
Mein Gott, die Charaktere.
Davon einmal abgesehen, dass sie wenig innovativ sind, sind sie allesamt unsympathisch, agieren nicht nachvollziehbar und sind zu einem großen Teil ziemlich dumm. Der Autor gibt keiner der Figuren Facetten, sondern nur Schablonen vor, wobei er es nicht schafft, dass sie sich auch daran halten.
Nehmen wir einen der „Helden“: Yan.
Yan ist 15, Fischer und – so beschreibt uns der Autor ihn – ein etwas fauler Träumer. Als er sich zur abenteuerlichen Reise aufmacht, um seiner Geliebten zu folgen, lernt er innerhalb mehr oder weniger eines Tages mit einem Bogen umzugehen. Während sie von Meuchelmördern verfolgt werden (die ziemlich schlecht in ihrem Job sind, da sie die Gruppe, die größtenteils aus nicht ausgebildeten Leuten besteht, nie finden), denkt Yan fast jede Sekunde nur daran, wie er seine Geliebte dazu bringen kann, ihn zu heiraten.
Beispiel: Als sich Yan allein aufmachen muss, die Lage in einer Stadt auszukundschaften, ist sein Gedanke: Er könnte zwar bald sterben (ich erinnere: Meuchelmörder), doch wenigstens würde jetzt etwas passieren.
Mein Gesicht: ?
Was man allerdings hier zugutehalten muss: wenigstens bleibt der Autor zumindest Yans Charaktere treu, denn dessen größtes – und gefühlt einziges – Problem, ist von Anfang bis Ende nur: wie schaffe ich es, dass sie mich heiratet?
Ich erinnere erneut: Meuchelmörder. Die, ganz nebenbei erwähnt, offenbar bereits mehr als 2/3 der Erben (Nachfahren einer bestimmten Gruppe, hier aber nicht wichtig, doch fast alle aus unserer Party gehören zu den Erben und sind somit das Ziel der Meuchelmörder) erfolgreich getötet haben. Wobei ich mich aber frage, wieso sie das geschafft haben, während die vollkommen unausgebildete Geliebte es schafft, mit einem Messer, mit dem sie nicht umgehen kann, drei bewaffnete Männer (zugegeben war das keine Meuchelmörder, sondern nur engagierte Schläger) mehr oder weniger zu besiegen oder zumindest so lange unter Kontrolle zu halten, bis Yan, der, wie schon erwähnt, ebenfalls „nur“ ein Fischer ist und vom Kampf keine Ahnung hat, ihr beisteht.
Das schlimmste aber, das, was mir regelmäßig Magenkrämpfe verursacht hat, waren die – und ich unterstelle dem Autor hier Absicht – als unfähig und hilflos dargestellten Frauen.
In der Gruppe befinden sich zwei davon: die junge Leti (die Geliebte, wir erinnern uns) und ihre Tante Corenn, die (soweit ich das verstanden habe, denn, wie ich gleich darlegen werde, handelt die gute Frau ganz und gar nicht so) eine Regierungsposition bekleidet und offenbar Magie anwenden kann (was sie aber irgendwie nie tut).
Anfangs scheint Corenn so etwas wie eine selbstbewusste Frau zu sein, die sich aufmacht, ihre Nichte (Leti) vor den Meuchelmördern zu retten. Doch als die beiden fliehen (seltsamerweise angeblich zu Pferde, wobei die Pferde allerdings plötzlich verschwinden – war das vielleicht ihre Magie?) und auf ihren Bekannten (den Krieger) treffen, scheint Corenn plötzlich ins Weibchen-Syndrom zu verfallen. Sie unterwirft sich dem Mann in jeder Entscheidung, was ich zu einem Teil auch nachvollziehen kann – schließlich ist er Krieger, sie nur Politikerin -, doch sie scheint zu nichts mehr eine Meinung zu haben. Zwischendurch war sie so unsichtbar, dass ich länger überlegen musste, als sie irgendwann wieder zu Wort kam: wer ist denn das jetzt?
Kommen wir zu Leti. Meinem „Liebling“.
Dieses Mädchen ist ein Grauen. Als Corenn und Leti überfallen werden und der Krieger zu ihrer Rettung eilt und von den Meuchelmördern nur ein paar Leichen übrig lässt (ein desertierter Krieger gegen drei voll ausgebildete Meuchelmörder, die im Auftrag einer Todesgöttin unterwegs sind - ich sage doch, sie sind hervorragend ihn ihrem Job), weint Leti. Alles ok, auch nachvollziehbar. Würde mich auch stark durchrütteln.
Fünf Seiten später jedoch schlägt sie mehr oder weniger vor, Reisenden, die ihnen begegnen, fast vorsorglich zu töten. Ich meine, ist doch egal, oder?
Als der Krieger ihr dann verbietet eine Waffe zu tragen (Frauen sollen nicht kämpfen, *gähn*, voll die Überraschung in diesem Buch …), ist sie eingeschnappt, beleidigt und schnippisch. Als ihr verboten wird, die Männer (*hüstel*) auf ihre gefährliche Mission zu begleiten, fängt sie an zu weinen.
Und das geht immer so weiter.
Gegen Ende könnte man meinen, dass es ein wenig besser wird – zumindest, was Leti betrifft. Sie benimmt sich etwas weniger wie eine zickige Kuh, was überhaupt der Grund war, dass ich die letzten fünfzig Seiten noch lesen konnte, ohne vollkommen auszurasten.
Denn zwischendurch machten mich die schwachen Frauenfiguren und der (ja! Ich sage es!) Sexismus, mit dem der Autor diese Welt beschreibt, wahnsinnig.
Ich will jetzt aber das Buch nicht nur verreißen, sondern auch aufzeigen, welche Autoren es besser machen.
George R. R. Martin – Das Lied von Eis und Feuer: Großartige und facettenreiche Figuren, egal ob Männer oder Frauen. Trotz der mittelalterlichen Welt haben wir viele starke Frauen (Daenerys, Arya, Cersei, Brienne, Cat, Asha, die Sandschlagen, Ygritte, usw.), die ihren eigenen Weg gehen.
Michael J. Sullivan – Ryiria: obwohl die zwei „Helden“ Männer sind, haben wir mit Arista eine Frau, die aus dem mittelalterlichen Schablonen ausbricht und von Band zu Band stärker wird. Klassische Questenfantasy und wahnsinnig spannend.

Die Charaktere waren teilweise interessant, allerdings war keiner davon so sympathisch, dass es nicht verschmerzbar gewesen wäre, wenn er ins Gras gebissen hätte. Um ehrlich zu sein hätte das der Geschichte sogar gut getan, denn bis auf ein paar Ausnahmen aus den ersten Kapiteln gingen die meisten Zweikämpfe für unsere Helden mehr als nur glimpflich aus. Besonders gen Ende, wo sich die super ausgebildeten Auftragskiller plötzlich mehr als nur ungeschickt gegen teilweise unerfahrene Gegner angestellt haben.
Das Geheimnis, das das ganze Buch hindurch vor der Nase des Lesers schwebt, ist am Ende auch nicht so spannend und alles andere bleibt zum Ende des ersten Bandes offen. Man erfährt eigentlich überhaupt nichts, denn auch die Charaktere selbst sind am Ende ihrer Reise nicht schlauer als am Anfang. Ob wohl alles erst am Ende des letzten Bandes auf den letzten Seiten aufgeklärt wird? Zumindest einen Teil des Rätsels hätte man doch schon im ersten einstreuen können, damit die Sache interessant bleibt und Leser wie Charaktere nicht genauso blind in den zweiten Teil der Geschichte laufen, wie sie es schon zu Anfang ihrer Reise waren.

J'ai bien aimé ce début de la série du "Secret de Ji". La construction de ce monde "high-fantasy" est bien faite, j'apprécie les pays avec leurs politiques, histoire et cultures, sans devenir trop élaborés. Le monde a des unités de temps entièrement nouvelles, rassemble vaguement à une ère médiévale et contient des éléments magiques.
L'intrigue principale s'agit de six des héritiers d'un groupe d'ambassadeurs de tout les pays qui étaient partis en excursion à l'île mystérieuse de Ji presque un siècle avant. Les descendants de ces hommes et femmes sont de raisons inconnues poursuivi d'une secte d'assassins et une majorité d'eux sont tués. Six entre eux se rejoignent. D'ici se déroule l'histoire des six héritiers de Ji.
Mon problème c'est les personnages. Mis apart le fait que Léti est un peu embêtant, ne faisant rien d'autre que pleurer et de revolter quand on la traite de la petite fille/jeune femme pubertaire qu'elle est, les personnages n'ont pas assez de développement. Et un monologue intérieur débattant des conflicts évidents ne passe pas automatiquement pour un développement.
Mais globalement, un début solide.

Six Heirs, the first book in the SECRET OF JI series by Pierre Grimbert, was originally published some years ago in the author’s native French. Sadly, it does not import well, though some of the flaws may be due to translation issues rather than authorial ones.
The novel opens with a captivating story of how several generations ago an enigmatic stranger (is there any other kind?) led a group of emissaries from most of the nations of the Known World to the island of Ji, where they simply vanished. When they eventually returned as mysteriously as they had disappeared, some had died, many were wounded, and none would speak of what they had been shown or where they had been. An interesting start that ends without really telling you anything about the central mysteries. The secret of Ji was easy to figure out long before it was revealed, the second mystery of who is killing the heirs was barely addressed. Hopefully the story moves a bit more quickly in the subsequent books.
Of special note when reading the ebook it is difficult to look up Dekade, Deciday, Centiday, and Milliday in the glossary (which is in the back). Since the characters mention the various divisions a lot I thought it best to include them below. It is obvious that this is a time keeping system which is built on tens. However the specifics are as follows:
Dekade: 10 days: prime, dēs, terce, quart, quint, sixt, septime, octes, nones, & term
Centiday: 1/10 of a Deciday or ~14 minutes
Deciday: 1/10 of a Day or ~2 hrs 25 minutes

This is the translation of a rather successful french fantasy serie written in the 90s. The book is rather short and the story takes a while to build up but it isn't bad and I plan to finish it eventually ( only 2 books have been translated and this is a 4 books serie). Character build-up is not a strength of the book and in some ways you can see the heavy influence David Eddings early books had on the author ( it is very reminiscent of the Belgariad in some ways), but once the action builds up the book is hard to drop.
What is really sad is that as a french citizen( even if I live in Colorado), the only digital version of the book available to me is the english translation (I have not been able to locate a french e-book).

Un premier tome qui me laisse assez partagé.
D’abord, le bon : la trame. Franchement, dès le prologue, le mystère accroche le lecteur. On a envi de savoir ce qui s’est passé sur l’île de Ji, quels sont les secrets des descendants, pourquoi le voeux de silence etc. L’opacité, le nébuleux, ajoute au caractère fantastique et aguiche la curiosité.
D’un autre côté, dans ce genre de récit plus on donne de l’importance au secret, plus on fait du mystère quelque chose de sibyllin et énigmatique, plus on grandit le mythe, d’un autre côté, les attentes des lecteur croissent. Et là, la difficulté est d’apporter une réponse, de révéler quelque chose à la hauteur du mystère. A mon opinion, l’auteur n’a pas vraiment réussit ce pari à la fin de ce tome. J’ai bien conscience qu’en effet il y a plus au mystère, qu’un portail vers d’autres mondes serait en effet quelque chose d’incroyable mais franchement? Toute la scène sur l’île et cette cérémonie si mystérieuse, si importante, m’a laissé totalement indifférent. Vu la hauteur du secret et des enjeux, je m’attendais à quelque chose de dramatique, de séismique; à la place j’ai eu une sorte de scène d’apparition très décevante.
De manière plus importante, LA plus grosse critique que j’ai envers ce livre se tourne vers ses personnages. Ils sont franchement d’une platitude et d’un ennui assommants. Ironiquement, deux semaines à peine après la lecture de ce livre, à l’écriture de cette critique, je ne me rappellais même plus des noms des personnages que j’ai dû aller chercher.
Déjà, les deux personnages adolescents étaient de trop. Vraiment pas nécessaire à l’histoire, ils alourdissaient la trame avec des préoccupations franchement inutiles. Surtout Yan avec son obsession pour Léti. Son personnage se résume à son amour pour son amie d’enfance, à quel point il l’aime, à quel point il veut la protéger, à quel point il veut la demander en mariage mais ne sait pas s’il est à la hauteur. Franchement d’un ennui… Le pire est que nous passons une partie significative du livre de son point de vue à lire ses épanchements sur sa dulcinée.
Du côté de Léti, le traumatisme qu’elle a subi aurait en effet pu représenter un fil narratif très intéressant pour l’histoire. Cependant, je trouve que la chose n’est pas très bien gérée par l’auteur, avec une majeure partie du temps consacrée à la rebellion de Léti contre Grigan le chauvin. Franchement, je ne sais pas vraiment ce que l’écrivain avait en tête avec ce fil narratif : visait-il un message féministe ou anti-féministe? J’imagine qu’il faut continuer les autres tomes pour voir où il mène ce fil mais déjà, rien qu’ici, voir les femmes totalement inutiles (même celle qui est soi-disant magicienne ET grande meneuse dans son pays!), voir l’attitude de Grigan et Yan par la suite (à qui on a l’impression que le livre donne raison) est vraiment pesant.
De plus, ces deux adolescents passent une irritante moitié de leur temps à se rebeller contre Grigan juste pour le plaisir de la rébellion. Ils contestent les mesures les plus logiques et râlent constamment à propos de tout. C’est peut être là une représentation assez juste de l’adolescence mais ça n’aidait en rien à faire aimer ces deux personnages.
Quant aux personnages adultes… Ils sont juste décevants. Pas de développement de personnage, pas de complexité ; ils n’avaient qu’une corde à leur arc, rien qu’une facette et puis basta. Pas d’alchimie dans le groupe, pas d’étincelles, nada. D’ailleurs, les disputes constantes entre Grigan et Reyan (qui était pourtant, à l’origine, un personnage intéressant), même dans les moments les plus inopportuns est vite devenu irritant pour moi.
Même si ce premier tome ne m’a pas vraiment convaincu, j’allais donner une chance au second volume parce que la trame m’avait vraiment captivé à l’origine. Cependant, après avoir lu The Last Sun, qui est sincèrement que du plaisir, je réalise qu’il faut pas se forcer ; il y a beaucoup à lire dans ce monde et si je ne trouve pas de l’intérêt ici, mieux vaut s’arrêter.

Six Heirs in entertaining but unfortunately rather generic fantasy. By the end I was cursing fantasy's bad habit of only writing in long series of books. I had been sucked into the story and Grimbert's well-thought out world, enough to want to know what happens next, but slightly resentful that I'd have to read another three books to find out and not at all convinced that The Secret of Ji was intriguing enough to read on. Six Heirs is basically a really long prologue. It takes one book to bring together the titular six and set them up for their adventure. Beginning with an old legend of the strange appearance of a man called Nol and a mysterious and deadly journey that can never be spoken of, we then flash forward in time - the heirs of the secret of Ji are being hunted down and ruthlessly murdered by a powerful religious cult. Only a few lucky, or observant, individuals survive and they gather together with the intention of returning to the island on which the legendary journey occurred, in order to find some answers and to discover why they are being killed.
It doesn't take long to settle into a standard fantasy plot, whether it's the Nazgul or trained assassins. There is a lady magician who plays the Gandalf role, a reckless lover who plays the innocent, wannabe hero and even a gruff, ranger-like guide who reminds you of Aragorn. There are a few skirmishes and lots of journeying before we come to the revelation on the island of Ji. These typecasts are possibly unfair to Grimbert, who does create a very different feeling magical world, packed with global politics and unique cultures. He expects a lot from the reader, not bombarding you with wordy histories and geographical details. Neither does he rely heavily on magical occurrences, flashy action scenes or weird and wonderful creatures. Instead, he focusses on the characters. The lead, a young man chasing after the girl he loves, is interesting enough, a mixture of naivety and daring, of fear with excitement. He begins to find his calling by the end of the book and no doubt will be the subject of a few revelations given that he is the only one of the characters who is not an heir. Disappointing is his love interest. The young girl is written superficially and stereotypically feminine - Grimbert unfortunately plays along with some of the fantasy's worst gender stereotypes. The last two heirs, a pacifist who can communicate with animals and a charming rogue looking out for himself, complicate the mix well. It might not be the most original start to a fantasy series, but there are enough good, complex characters to carry the interest into the next book.
More importantly, the end is actually quite good, switching the feel of the world from high, medieval fantasy to something more complicated and fragmented. Like Grimbert's style, the last chapters leave plenty to the reader's imagination. He isn't afraid to leave you hanging. I'm not rushing madly to read the next one, but when I feel like disappearing into a fantasy world for a little while again, I'm sure I'll think of Pierre Grimbert's slightly different fantasy and be tempted to give it another go.

Wasnt expecting very much from Six Hiers. What a great surprise and enjoyable accident it turned out to be. This was an impulse pickup. I knew it was a French translation and I've enjoyed the French fantasy I've been exposed to in the past. It has a little bit of a YA feel to it, yet having said that, the world built by Pierre Grimbert is really very layered and well considered and its in no way a YA book in a bad way although the Protagonist and his love are young (she is 15 in this book and turns 16 in the second book).
One of the most enjoyable parts of the book - and mind you the whole read was enjoyable - is a great very detailed, encyclopedia of the world.
The story is a good read and while its light and adventurous its solid fantasy, avoiding many of the very cliched tropes of the genre if you forgive its central conceit (it's, in essence, an epic quest). It's also very obvious that these "three books" are actually one book that's been chopped up. God knows why - but I have the sinking suspicion it was done to make a little bit more money for the publisher. If you're looking for a new series to take on holidays to read on the plane or around the pool you could do worse and its fine weeknight reading too. It's not going to set the world of fantasy novels on fire but its far better than your average fantasy, while not finding a need to be "gritty, grim-dark" in the mistaken belief that killing key characters and hyperviolence makes it somehow more "mature", literary or "acceptable" for adults.

Mal wieder eine Bewertung auf Deutsch, da ich das Buch in der deutschen Übersetzung gelesen habe. Der Schreibstil war irgendwie etwas altertümlich, das Buch ist aber ja auch nicht direkt das Neueste. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich keinen der Charaktere wirklich mochte 😂
Léti war einfach nur anstregend (vielleicht die Basis für ausgezeichnetes Character-Development?) und der Rest war so ein bisschen "meh". Außer Bowbaq ♥️ - Bowbaq kann man nicht NICHT mögen!
Grundsätzlich hatte ich das Gefühl den längsten Prolog in der Geschichte der Prologe zu lesen... es hat sich irgendwie ziemlich gezogen und oftmals wurden Gespräche einfach nur "erzählt" und nicht tatsächlich aktiv durchgeführt.
Heißt insgesamt: die Prämisse des Buches finde ich gut, der Schreibstil und die Charaktere haben mich nicht wirklich in den Bann gezogen.
In Summe vermutlich eher 2,5-3 ⭐
Mal sehen, ob ich die nächsten Bücher noch lese oder nicht... im Regal stehen sie noch (habe die Reihe Secondhand geschenkt bekommen)

Full of cliches and tropes. Tries to be epic fantasy, but reads like 80s/90s high fantasy. Most of the book is a setup for the series, without resolving anything within this volume. The last 80 pages are a glossary full of made up time units and world building elements we didn't even encounter in the story. A lesson a lot of these high fantasy writers should learn is to show their world building instead of telling us.
The writing was wooden and stilted, with weird and illogical dialogs. Part of this could also be the translation of course, but I read some of the same complaints in reviews of other translations.
In the author bio on Goodreads, Jack Vance, Fritz Leiber, and Michael Moorcock are named as being influences. Mostly I see David Eddings and other high fantasy writers.
I'll leave the rest of the series for what it is (12 more books? Hell no)

Didn't love this book. It's fine, but not compelling.
Most of the main characters aren't very interesting to me. And the book hinges around a mystery that remains unsolved at the end of the book, so it's really a book about some people making a journey over to a mysterious island.
The fact that people who have been to the island can't talk about what's on the island unless they're on the island struck me as a very artificial means of maintaining tension. I guess it's good that we're only left to wonder about it for a little bit... but that reminded me that they never mentioned that they had this important information before that point.
Anyway. Meh.

I really liked this book.
It's a typical fantasy, with magic, persons with all sorts of power and mysterious events. But that's exactly why I like this genre.
Nevertheless were there also "new" things, for example the writer created a new time-system (which was really confusing in the beginning, especially because I didn't find out about the wordlist until it was almost to late). It is really well written and it read very easy and fluent.
The storyline is very intriguing and mysterious.
I'm looking forward to the next books.

This review is meant for all four parts of the series. The basic idea of the story is really good. But the story telling is somehow lame... No real surprises (with few exceptions), no real suspense. And the worst thing: I often had the feeling that it is written for young adults: Every decision/feeling is explained in detail, although obvious right from the beginning. Characters are partly interesting and funny, partly flat and acting implausibly.
I finished the series because I wanted to know how the story ended. Not sure yet if I read the succeeding series...

Bref, voici une lecture très (trop) introductive, mais qui, une fois qu'on s'accroche, promet du bon pour la suite. Les personnages sont intéressants, après tout, et le fameux secret, dont on nous donne une bref ébauche ici, ne demande qu'à être découvert. Je lirai le T2 par curiosité, car je crois que je serai sûrement très agréablement surprise !

It's nice. I mean, i do like the characters and the plot is interesting.
But with all the joy this book brought to me, what it really did, i couldn't help myself to say that something about this book puts me off.
Maybe that writing style doesn't appeal to me enough, even though it's good written.
3 stars of "i-want-to-like-it-and-i-kinda-do-but-i-can't-put-my-finger-on-that-thing-that-disturbs-me"...

Une très bonne fantaisie.
J'ai bien apprécié l'histoire en général.
Les personnages sont très bien élaborés et complexes, avec une personnalité bien différent entre eux.
Le seul problème avec ce type d'histoire que sont basés en un secret lequel on découvre uniquement à la fin du livre est que une fois on prend conscience du secret on ne le voit pas assez important pour avoir attendu jusqu'à la fin.

Un début intéressant mais qui laisse sur sa faim. Quel est le secret de Ji et pourquoi en veut-on à ses héritiers ???
En tous cas, c'est loin de l'héroïc fantasy dont j'ai plus l'habitude et ça ne fait pas de mal de temps en temps. Ici, peu d'action ou de magie, ce qui n'empêche pas le livre d'être intéressant et bien écrit.

So I'm not the biggest fan of this book. The premise and magic are quite interesting so far but the rest... I really only like one character and the rest I either don't care much for or they're annoying. Also, the pacing in this book combined with the plot truly isn't that good. But, since I have the whole series in one book I will continue the series

Tu sais que l'histoire va être absolument incroyable quand le premier tome est aussi cool.
Un world building parfaitement introduit, ni trop overwhelming, ni incomplet. Et des personnages hyper variés en termes de personnalités, c'est tout bonnement génial.
