It’s a blue sky autumn day and Minna, Pop, Mom, and Dad have decided to go on an outing to Long Hill Orchard. As the bunnies fill their baskets, Farmer Miller teaches them all about apples. This charming story is filled with fun facts, activities, and an applesauce recipe.
Nancy Elizabeth Wallace attended the University of Connecticut, and majored in sociology and psychology with a minor in art history, then continued on for a master’s degree in child development.
For many years, she worked at Yale-New Haven Hospital with children and teenagers as Child Life Specialist helping children to understand what was going to happen if they needed to have a medical test or an operation or a cast.
Then she took two adult education courses, one was about traditional Scherenschnitt (share- en -sssh -nit) scherren means scissors, schnitt means cut. The other was about writing and illustrating children’s books. When she brought in a cut-paper illustration, the teacher said, “You’ve found your medium!”
Nancy is married to Peter Banks. They have been married for more than 30 years. He is a high school Physics teacher.
Apples, Apples, Apples Written & Art by: Nancy Elizabeth Wallace Ages: 4-8 US Grades: Preschool- Second Grade Lexile Measure: AD 260L Fiction, Apples, Types of Apples, Chart, Song, Recipe, Apple Printing Craft
Wallace created an adorable book through a collage technique with facts about apples. A rabbit family goes on an outing Long Hill Orchard farm to go apple picking. Later, they return home to continue the day filled with apple fun.
There they learn some educational facts about apples. The farmer shows a graph depicting the different types of apples and their characteristics. Apple, Apples, Apples also offers several bonuses. Children can delight by singing a song, engage in an apple printing craft, and work together with a trusted adult to create applesauce using the step by step recipe in the book.

this is probably one of the best Apple books we read for toddlers And preschoolers. my son enjoyed it the most and asked for it the most often. it has a lot of the same information as the other books about apples but it tells it in a story of a family of rabbits going to an apple orchard. there are some cute little funny moments. and then at the end there are some ideas for applesauce and a craft and apple phrases and even an apple song. not a huge fan of the song, it's not easy to sing. but, the rest of the book was great. the illustrations are also fascinating because it looks like pieces of paper cut out.
In Wallace's Apples, Apples, Apples a family of bunnies go to an orchard, picking apples. The problem in the story is that there are things the bunny family and audience do not know about apples. The solution is that there is a graph of apple types, sweetness, tart, texture, titles, applesauce recipe, apple diagram, et cetera.
Activities with this story could include: making applesauce, following the recipe, identifying letters within the apple titles, practicing colors of apples, and discussion questions about the apple diagram.
The illustration style wasn't my favorite, but it was very unique. This book was really difficult to get through with my 2. It was wordy and not super engaging. It might be a little more fun later, when he is older, but it wasn't our favorite this time around.
This book has a cute premise but I don't recommend reading it to a child younger than first grade or kindergarten, at the youngest. The story is interrupted with teaching moments and recipes, which would be better if they were in an appendix.
This is a fun book about a rabbit family that goes apple picking and learns all about apples. It incorporates a lot of nonfiction information, including a diagram of the inside of an apple.
This would be a good to read to a group of younger kids of they are learning about how apples grow and might be taking a field trip to pick apples, but otherwise I probably wouldn't necessarily read this book out loud for a story time. I did think it was neat though because it had recipes with apples, songs, and much more.
Personal Reaction: I liked this book because it shows the different uses for apples. It gives ideas for recipes, songs, and even apple printing. The books talks about a family having a fun day by picking apples together and then using them for different things.
Purpose: I would use this as an informational book for children and maybe even try the recipe in the book with the class. They would learn about apples in a fun way by making applesauce or apple printing. It is an enjoyable book that introduces something kids never think about doing with their family. It would be a fun book to read and to try the activities.
This book is a great tool to introduce the varieties of apples (ex. Granny Smith, McIntosh, etc), as well as the many uses for them (ex. Pies, crafts, snacks, etc) to students in the classroom. Apples, Apples, Apples is a HUGE source of information on apples from picking to cooking to printing. The illustrations are decent, however the faces on the characters show no emotion, so the reader will have to use a lot of inflections in tone to give the story life. I would certainly use this as a source in any grade in elementary to teach apple facts.
This is my 2.5 year olds favorite book, we have to read it at naptime and bedtime. I like that it's educational (out of nowhere the other day he named all the parts of an apple) and it has a fun song and recipe for applesauce in it. My son also loves the chart of apples and has to tell me which family member likes what apple every time we read it lol. The only negative I'd have to say is that it's not written the best, but no kid cares about that anyway :)
Edit: It's 4 years later, and I just downloaded it again. My now 6 year old and 4 year old still are loving it!
This book can be used for helping teach children K-2 about charting and graphing any results. You can also use this book to help teach your students about patterns, counting and comparing your results. I also like how this book suggests additional things you can do with your child to extend with any lesson you may be doing such as a recipe for making applesauce, an apple printing activity and even a fun apple song!
This story takes a story about a family vidit to the market and evolves into a story teaching young children all about apples and many different things apples can be used for. The story keps children engaged with many different fun recipes and even a song at the end. This is a great story to incoprate into a lesson all about apples and the varities of apples and also keeps chilren engaged and wanting to learn more in a fun, delicious, and healthy way.
I really enjoyed this book because of how simple it is and how it goes over the evolution of how apples grow. The family picks the apples look at the diffrent seeds, types of apples and what you can make out of the apples. The book gives you recipes that you can try with your own family or students.
This book is different from the typical picture book because it has recipes, songs, and other fun "apple" things at the end of the book. I know I will be using this book in my future classroom because I know a lot of schools have an apple week so this book could be very educational as well as very fun. I would definitely recommend this book to parents and fellow teachers.
This has been one of Emma's most favorite books. We have had our library copy for 12 weeks and now that our renewals are maxed out we have to take it back. She has memorized every word and eats apples constantly while reading it over and over again. We may have to add this one to our collection.
This book is full of information about apples. A family of rabbits go to an apple orchard and pick apples. They learn all about apples through idioms, songs, recipes, and crafts. Great book for prekindergarteners who are learning about apples.
This book takes a story about a family going apple picking into an informational book about apples! I love how throughout the book, Nancy Wallace teaches us about the different kinds of apples, how they grow, and the different parts of them through her illustrations.
a sweet book that combines a story of apple picking with information about apples. I like the way it included a chart of different apple varieties, and a diagram of the different parts of an apple.
A family of rabbits goes apple picking, with lots of information about apples and apple recipes and projects inserted not too subtly into the story. Cute cut-paper illustrations!
