I know it's unfair, but I'm not even going to give this book a fair shake, simply because there is WAY too much confusion with ages. We start off knowing that Helena gave her child up for adoption 16 years ago. We also learn that Helena started a modeling agency when she was "barely 25". Then we move on to Frankie (the daughter given up 16 years ago) studying a magazine cover with her mom on it, "taken 3 years ago when she quit modeling to start her agency". I'm no math whiz, but this puts Helena at the mark of 28. If she had a kid 16 years ago, that would have made her 12. Sorry, can't get past it. Would love to, but it's simple errors like this that ruin books for me.

Rated 2.5 stars.

I found this to be an average read. Nothing too exciting here, I didn't find it scary like the synposis made it out to be.

I didn't particularly find any of the characters likeable, maybe it was because this book didn't go into any real depth or background of the characters, it was hinted that but nothing definate was explained and the only past story we got was Richard the killer.

I also didn't like how Helena kept having to "fight" her feeling for Patrick. I mean really? he had an affair with you, got you pregnant, proceeded to convince you to give your child up and then seemed to let his wife treat the daughter like c**p for years?!? Surely all that should have killed off all romantic feelings. Maybe I am just someone who holds a grudge but to me there is no way after all that, I wouldn't remotely want to be with this man.

I would have liked a few more details on the FBI guy but again details was sadly lacking here, and again for someone supposedly still heartbroken over his murdered wife, he got with Claire the journalist pretty darn quick and without must explanation, one minute they weren't together, then they were.

To be honest, the most interesting character of this book was Richard the killer. His reasoning for the grudge against Helena were a bit off but to be honest most reasonings of a serial killer are dodgy so I can let this one go.

I have read others from this author (i cant remember what of the top of my head) and I know I enjoyed them more than I did this one. In fact with this review I have talked myself down from a 2.5 star rating to a 2. The things I have listed above just really annoyed me and the story didn't really come together like it should have for me. It all felt slow and rushed all at the same time. I kept reading purely because this was a book sent to me by Amazon to review. I wouldn't NOT read any from this author again but I won't be rushing out to read more.

I have a lot of different feelings about this book so I'll see if I can break them down for this review. It was DEFINITELY intriguing. I was always anxious to see what would happen next. At the same time, I scare easy, so I had to put it down a few times just to breathe and remember it's a book I'm reading. I liked that in the beginning we get separate stories that don't seem to have anything to do with each other and as the book progresses, we start seeing connections until it all comes together.

Richard was a very, VERY sick individual. I couldn't believe some of the things he came up with. I think he was probably the most developed character. He made me sick, but in a way, I could understand where he was coming from. I don't think this would've happened if his character had been written from any other character's perspective. That guy needed some help! I almost felt sorry for him. He was a monster created by unfortunate circumstances that weren't his fault and the people around him should have been better about raising him correctly.

My favorite character was Frankie. That girl is one tough cookie. I remember me at 15. In her situations, I would have jumped off a cliff. Seriously, how much can one teenage girl take? She had her moments, I mean she is a teenager after all, but she wasn't backing down from anyone without a fight. She was very strong-willed, sarcastic, but most importantly, intelligent. She knew what she was doing every step of the way.

This book was pretty well written in my opinion. There were a lot of turns and surprises and it kept me on the edge of my seat. The ending, however, disappointed me a bit. It wasn't that I didn't like how it ended, it was just that it felt like someone else had written it. All of a sudden it was seemingly rushed and a bit predictable. Even the characters' dialogue seemed rushed. They started saying and doing exactly what I expected. All in all, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to fans of thrillers. It is definitely not for the faint at heart. I wouldn't even let my teenage cousins read this! For adult eyes only!

Well, this was an unexpected little gem. I dived straight into it not knowing much about it other than that it was a thriller, but that if it was in my collection of TBRs, then I must have thought it had promise when I downloaded it. And that, it did.

Helena Shea is an ex-model who has had press coverage for both good and bad reasons, the latter on account of an affair with a married man at a young age and then a bad relationship with drugs. Following rehab, she rebuilds her life by setting up her own modelling agency and building a home for young single mothers whose paths have taken them to an unhappy place not dissimilar to hers. A threatening phone call, a fire and its devastating effects suddenly rock Helena’s rebuilt world, but when evil touches her estranged daughter, Helena has to dig deep into her troubled past to search for whom might be so intent on seeking revenge. Little does she know that a sick and twisted killer is way too close to home for comfort.

The story wastes no time and ensures you’re well and truly hooked. It delivers on suspense and there’s a gosh, I didn’t expect that moment towards the end that seals a well-earned four/five-star stamp for this novel. The writing isn't quite as sophisticated as it could be, perhaps, but the characters are well combined and profiled, and the author portrays a depraved killer with unnerving skill.

I’m glad I squirrelled it onto my Kindle!

I picked this up thinking it sounds like a good psychological thriller. Well I've laughed at places where I don't think I should of done. The main character Richard Shelton who is the psychopath. His past is so excruciating that I wouldn't wanna meet him on a dark night. His parents are a weird set and I swear incest was part of the storyline (weird I know).

Some of the story was like boring and I was like "Get on with it and hurry up with the story". Helena and her family and stuff is ok, just felt sorry for her, as the lead original police officer had a grudge against her as well as the main psychopath Richard Shelton. I'm not sure if I fancy reading anymore of her books, but will see what the synopsis is on the next books.

UNSUSPECTING....

Helena Shea is putting her life back together. Once a highly paid supermodel and now the owner and CEO of her own modelling agency, a recent bitter scandal that nearly destroyed Helena and the daughter she gave up for adoption years ago seems to be settling down. With a chance to have a relationship with her daughter, Frankie, and the development of a centre for wayward young mothers that Helena is funding, it looks as if life is turning around for the mother and daughter. However....

Evil Lurks....

A killer raised amongst evil and seeking revenge is targeting Helena. Leaving a trail of blood in its wake, this sadist plans his return into Helena's life. When the madman abducts Frankie, Helena fears she might never see her daughter again. Seeking help from the journalist who almost destroyed her, an FBI Agent with suspicions towards her, as well as her ex-lover who is also Frankie's father, Helena must find the strength to fight past addictions and get her daughter back home again - alive.

To begin with, this story jumps all over the place. I didn't even care when the perpetrator was revealed. I didn't like any of the characters. But there was something about the book that made me keep reading. It did get better around the 60% mark, the pace picked up, and the story became more interesting.

Mommy, May I? had a good, strong cast of characters. My thoughts on them are as follows: Richard had really gotten the short end of the stick in life and I remained on edge about what he was capable of doing. Helena was making an honest effort at doing and being better. I was worried for her after the whole "van" incident. I felt for Frankie and all she had to endure thanks to circumstances completely out of her control.
There were constantly a lot of interesting things happening in this book from chapter to chapter. It kept me engaged throughout its entirety. I was dying to know the connection between Richard and Helena through Brianne, and why he wanted to ruin her life so badly.
As the book reached its climax, I was shocked and couldn't turn the pages fast enough to satisfy all of my curiousities. Then, just when I thought everything was over and done with for Helena and her family, there was still more to come. Mommy, May I? had so many twists and turns. It was a fabulous story and I really enjoyed. I am definitely looking forward to reading more from A. K. Alexander.

Does a person ever really know what blackness might be lurking in the heart of an acquaintance, friend or even a family member.

I downloaded this book a year or so ago but just started reading it yesterday. I reluctantly put it down around 4 am to try for a little sleep. It wasn't until 3/4 of the way through the book that I felt the first suspicion of who was really crying to destroy Helena. Through the mind of the psycho I knew who he felt he was trying to avenge but didn't have all the pieces figured out until near the end. There is a lot of depravity throughout the book mostly related to the killer.

The book was really well written with interesting characters. I rated it a 5.

It’s entertaining and the writing is gripping enough to keep you hooked until the end but there are times when it feels a bit silly. It was a bit anvilicious in giving the serial killer various reasons that contributed to his becoming a serial killer. Having him be the victim of child abuse, bullying, the product of incest, finding his mother murdered as a child, his mother being a prostitute, his father being a necrophiliac, it’s all a bit too much.

Great story

This was an excellent story. Some parts are freaky and creepy, but I found it to be one of those "can't put the book down" stories. I also had a feeling that the perp was indeed Helena's assistant.

Initially confusing because it kept jumping around, different people; past, present; no real connections to each other

Then picked up towards the middle. Started to get good and then, blink, it’s done. All wrapped up in just a few pages.

The Bogeyman can be anybody so beware!!!

Great book with lots of gross characters but so interesting. We cannot sometimes imagine how downright evil and vile people can be. This book contains some of man’s deviant tendencies but in the long run they too can be stopped.

A.K. Alexander takes you inside the mind of a serial killer, and it is a dreadful place indeed. The killer's personal history is told through a series of flashbacks (in chronological order, making it easy to follow) from the time he is a young child. It's easy to see how the disturbing scenes created a psychopath. His problematic behavior begins quite early and continues throughout his adulthood. When he crosses paths with Helena, the lead character, things spiral out of control.

Helena has enough problems of her own without being the focus of a serial killer's personal vendetta. As a young model, she had an affair with a married man that resulted in a child, Frankie. The father and his wife convinced her to give her baby to them to raise as a family. She began turning to alcohol and drugs to deal with her problems, resulting in a stint at rehab and lots of bad press in the tabloids. When she and Frankie's father decide to come clean to their now-teenage daughter, his wife leaves him and tells her side of the story to the tabloids, painting Helena as a husband-stealing whore. Trying to make amends with her past, Helena has invested most of her money in creating a home for wayward mothers. Soon, everything and everyone Helena loves are targeted by a madman seeking revenge.

There are many secondary characters that add to the book's interest--some you'll love and some you'll hate--including a suspicious detective with his own vendetta against Helen, an FBI profiler working against the clock to stop a desperate killer, a tabloid reporter seeking to undo some of the damage she's caused, and Helena's gay assistant. Also, be forewarned that this book contains very disturbing descriptions of the serial killer's psychotic behavior.

This was one book that was hard to put down. The book flips between several people brought together by murder. First there is Richard who is a serial killer. I’m honestly not giving anything away saying this. Helena is a recovering addict trying to open a sober living home. Patrick is Helena’s ex and father to her daughter Frankie. Leeza is Patrick’s evil ex wife who is out to destroy everyone. Tyler is an FBI agent who a talent for hunting killers. Collier is a cop who believes Helena committed a few crimes and is hell bent on convicting her. Tim is the loyal assistant to Helena. Lastly there is Claire the reporter whose stories haven’t helped Helena one bit. It might seem like there are a lot of people in this book but they are all connected so perfectly it doesn’t seem daunting at all. There are murders and set ups galore. Be prepared to stay up late reading. There are turns you won’t be expecting. Normally I’m good at seeing twists but I sure didn’t see that one coming. The pace of the book was perfect. The suspense was delicious. The ending was satisfying. I loved the characters. They felt so real which made it all better. You won’t regret reading this book. I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Mommy May I is the first A.K. Alexander book that I have read and I really enjoyed it. Helena Shea was a teenage mother-to-be who had to make the ultimate decision...Do I keep my child with me, or let the father(who is married) raise the baby as their own? Helena believes she makes "the best" decision for her child and gives her baby up.

This once young mom who was wrapped up in the lifestyle of a supermodel and bottomed out has finally gotten her act together. Now in charge of her own company and using much of her money to help young girls that are a reflection of her former self, Helena has a real shot at having a relationship with her daughter who is now a teenager. But fate seems to have other plans. A killer is on the loose and Helena Shea and all things connected to her seem to have a huge target on their backs. Will Helena be able to handle the stress, the fear, and the torment caused by this evil killer. Will Helena finally be able to have a relationship with her daughter, or will that chance be gone forever once the killer sets his final plan in motion?

I didn't like this one as much as I did Daddy's Home. It seemed like it was a sequel or something and all the back story should have been in a separate volume as it seemed to crop up and confuse the reader THEN was glossed over as to what it all meant. It happened a few times in the story and I wasn't keen on reading it like that.
There were apostrophe mistakes and off was used in a sentence instead of out and there were a few instances where speechmarks were left out and drivel spelt as drivle/feebie spelt as freebie. These were annoying.
I wasn't keen on Patrick.......he seemed a selfish sod, if you ask me.
I think it would have been a lot better if it was longer and we were told all of the varying past stories and therefore didn't keep jumping around as we read.
Bring back Holly Jennings, I say !!

This is the second AK Alexander book I've read in the last few months. They're not highbrow or complicated, and I did figure out who the killer was a little over halfway through. It was short enough for me to read in a couple of sittings in one day so it's not a book that will last and last.

But what this book are about is a good old fashioned thrill. And it certainly delivered on that. It had some fairly interesting things to say on media intrusion and witch-hunts that, while they aren't new are relevant and good to see in a piece of fiction. They also ground a story that could seem pretty far-fetched at times.

That was particularly true of the final few chapters. What I think was intended as a thrilling climax felt more like the overblown finale to a not very good slasher movie.

A fun little bit of escapism, as long as you don't think about it too hard.

Amazingly captivating

great book the writing was wonderful there wasn't any confusion about the characters they were greatly though out. the connections between the characters while also remaining intriguing and keep you on the edge of your seat was beautiful. I was really impressed and quickly became immersed in the story almost not wanting to know the end. I just wanted it to continue. the ending was not disappointing at all. never think your completely sure how it would end I actually managed to feel many emotions and sympathetic towards characters. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to someone who enjoys a good mystery and likes to feel like they know the characters as people. I didn't like we'll there was nothing serious worth mentioning. the book in my opinion was a good read and I wouldn't mind rereading. it's all my favorites in one.

Well..this is a typical crime book. At first there's just a bunch of stories, you know, set in the present. Then you get kind of like..flashbacks of a sort. You get to read about the past of someone called Richard. The book itself was good, I usually take a while to read crime books but I loved this. The killer is so smart, I even loved the twist, which made him even smarter. I also loved how the author let us in on his past also.
The thing that disappointed me most was the ending though..it just ended so quickly and simply without much struggle. I won't spoil it for you but you might get it if you read this.

4/5. - I just didn't like the ending very much.

Ya, I really didn't care for this one. Was I surprised by the revelation of who the perp was? Yes and no. It certainly wasn't my first pick on who I thought it was but I wasn't like "Oh wow!" or anything. I guess I just wasn't excited about the book so when it was revealed, it was like "Oh okay". I didn't care about any of the characters and didn't care what happened to them. Overall, the book was pretty much predictable. I wasn't disappointed by the ending since the rest of the book was just as dull.

By the way, an analgesic isn't used to make someone sleep but It would burn their tummy keeping them wide awake. Analgesic is a pain med.

All I can say about this book is that it was very twisted - but in an absolutely awesome way! Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It had just the right amount of mystery involved and there were so many surprises along the way. I loved it.

This may sound strange but I almost wish I could erase my memory of this book and read it over again. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good mystery.

It was okay and kept me interested but there was no major excitment. It was one of those books I could put down with no particular thought of when I would get back to it. A thriller should be able to keep you on the edge of your seat and make you not want to put the book down. So for me this was a three star.

Some very good characters, including a couple of minor ones I could easily see having their own book. I found some of the villain's antics a little disturbing to read but I guess he wouldn't be as loathesome without them. Can't say there are any surprises to be had but I wouldn't let that put you off an otherwise decent read.

This book was a bit confusing at first, with a few chapters with a different person in each one, trying to work out who was who and who did what. However, it didn't take long to get going....around 60% the pace really picked up and I was surprised at who the culprit was! I didn't suspect it at all. All in all, a good storyline, well written and a good ending.
