Her Dying Breath

Rate this book

Journalist Brenda Banks is on the verge of the biggest story of her career—if she can stay alive long enough to finish it. A serial killer is targeting men in the small town of Slaughter Creek, leaving behind a twisted trail of clues meant only for Brenda. It’s a dangerous, deadly game, one she cannot master without the help of FBI Special Agent Nick Blackwood, the man she’s loved since high school—and whose tormented past could hold the key to catching a killer.

Nick Blackwood barely survived childhood at the hands of his father, a sadistic mastermind known as the Commander. Since he left town, he’s spent his life chasing criminals—and trying to forget the beauty he once loved. But when a murder investigation brings him face-to-face with Brenda Banks, Nick cannot ignore the smoldering fire she rekindles in his troubled soul. Allowing Brenda into his heart means letting down his guard—and that’s just what the killer is counting on…

Great Story! Kept me Guessing. Great Narration! (Audible whispersync review)
Wow this was was great story. I loved it. It was darker than the first book in the series, which made it even better. I liked Brenda and Nick they had some great chemistry and a couple of hot and steamy sex scenes.

The story line and plot were great. This one is about a serial killer named Seven. It was awesome. She was just the right amount of crazy that you kind of liked her, and had empathy at the same time. This story had me guessing all they way through. With a bang of a conclusion. There was so much great dialogue, and the story flowed so nicely it was very easy to follow along. Great writing.

As for the narration, it was fantastic. Tanya Eby is becoming a favorite of mine. The men sound like men, everyone has their own distinct voice and she reads with emotion. Makes the story even better.

This was a free read free listen with my KU subscription, what a great deal!
I totally recommend this series. I am off to the next book! I hope its as good as the first 2 have been.

For me, this was a very disturbing novel! It was, at parts, very confusing, but also had me on the edge of my seat at times. There were also times where I thought that the series was actually more of a saga of Amelia's journey toward being a whole, normal person.

In this book, the main couple is Brenda Banks and Nick Blackwood. Brenda was a very annoying heroine, constantly trying to interfere in the investigation to further her career at the news station. Her depression as a teenager that led into the feelings of not belonging/not being good enough as an adult also felt rather contrived, and all because she . However, this was resolved toward the end of the book, in a way that made sense.

Nick was also a bit annoying, what with the supposed demons from being raised by his father. It didn't make much sense as to why he could not be with anyone, all because of his childhood.

The ongoing saga of the experiment was very revealing, and disturbing. The serial killer in this story was a complete shock to me! I'm a bit interested to see how the experiment totally unravels!

I waited to cool off before making any comments. I really, really disliked Brenda. It was an intense dislike; I really wished that the author kept her as the antagonist that we're supposed to hate. I couldn't believe the way she could wander all around crime scenes and in one case Nick drove her to the scene. I guess he had his personal car or the bureau would have pulled the FBI vehicle since she wouldn't be allowed as a passenger. Also, there were times that the law enforcement responsibilities seemed kind of backwards. There were definitely times that Nick's involvement seemed off. Well actually as they are too close to the situation, I find the involvement totally off. I prefer more realistic scenarios.

As for the romance, I never felt any spark between her and Nick.

I was so frustrated that I've abandoned this series .

Brenda didn't start off very well with me. She's taken news reporter to a whole new level of heartless. She's showed that she cares not about a murdered man or innocent children experimented on, she cares about the hot story and the glory that comes with it, exposing guilty men, not getting justice for the citizens. She's selfish and greedy. I also don't understand how Nick and Jake put up with her nosy, pushy, interviews knowing she posed a risk for hurting the case and they were still questioning the motel manager, how could they possibly find out the snswer or her questions in minutes. Not to mention, they didn't have to answer her questions in the first place, she's just a news reporter who was given the tip. She has no authority over them and they're letting the bitch get her way and walk all over them when they owe her nothing other than "No comment" or if they must answer "We'll let you know more further into the investigation, until then, back off and let us do our job."

I'm glad other reviewers pointed out that the police procedure was inaccurate and completely unrealistic even for a book. NO officer whatsoever of any law enforcement field would let a nosy reporter inside a crime scene getting a firsthand look as they gather evidence, invite herself into their investigation when she feels like it simply because the killer contacted her, interviewing them as they're doing their job at that moment securing the crime scene, or answering her questions as if she has a right to know or she's their boss which clearly isn't the case. I don't care if this was just a ploy to get her and Nick to spend time together and to include her in the case, it would never happen in reality and to be honest it was just plain annoying to see this witch act like she owned the town and do whatever she thought she was entitled to not only because of her occupation but her status of who her parents were. Brenda is NOT a heroine who I like or at least respect. I hate her, period.

Nick was alright but because I couldn't stand Brenda he didn't make an impression on me either. I was ready to get the book over with about halfway in. He was very closed off and we didn't really get to see a relationship develop between them which was more than ok with me for this book. I felt that this story wasn't as good as the first one. It had its moments but was brought down by my dislike of Brenda and Nick's pushover nature when it came to her. He let her walk all over his authority and seemed weak. I don't understand what he saw in her either besides her physical attributes. He claimed to have wanted her and loved her since high school when she dated his brother but honestly, what was there to like? She was a cruel, bratty, stuck-up witch I high school. Sure, she had her problems for why she was the way she was but they didn't know that and it certainly didn't excuse her actions. There was no chemistry between them other than physical attraction and maybe lust. He was dark and a hard man who confided one thing in her that seemed very anti-climactic. It didn't feel special or like it brought them together. For one thing, she never opened up to him about why she was in the sanatorium at one point which shows how much she trusts him. Then when she found out he checked up on her she had the nerve to get angry and upset about it but it's ok for her to go snooping for information in other people's lives but when it comes to her she has a right to privacy. Hypocrite, much? He had a right to look into why she was there not only because he was doing his job but because she didn't tell him anything Everyone close is a suspect in murder, especially if they have contact with a killer.

Seven, I felt bad for her and I'm glad that she got her revenge but felt that her life is ruined because no one would listen to the kids. At first I thought she was overreacting in her need for revenge but after reading this book and reflecting back on the first book, she gets my deepest sympathy. She was stuck and she had no one that could save her or get her out. Her bitterness and anger is expected and she's entitled to feel however she wants because those who could have done something didn't listen to the pleas and cries for help from the children. Those who did try to do something about their suspicions died in the process. Those who didn't know and had no way of knowing what was going on had no reason to suspect trusted friends and family of hurting children in a hospital. I'm not sure if the author has plans for Seven having her own book but if she did I would definitely read it. This book didn't do anything special for me but I loved seeing Amelia again and the story of Seven who I hope we will see sometime in the future with her own story where she can find happiness and a new life. The creepy ending did grab my attention and it gets me even more excited to finally read Amelia's story after the next.

Ok. I mostly enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and had an unusual plot that I wasn't always able to predict. I was irritated by the romantic plot though and found it all too contrived and unnatural. The 'hunger' of it all wasn't quite right. In some parts the story wasn't quite clever enough and the author relied upon convenience rather than imagination and intelligence. Otherwise a good read.

I'm sorry, I am not a fan of delivering one star reviews, I usually prefer not to rate a book when I dislike it. But in this case I felt like it was too much. Neither the proceedings nor the romance made any sense to me, but especially the former. Family members running the investigation in a criminal case against one of their own -and with no uninterested party tagging along (I just don't get how the victims would be ok with it, not to mention a prosecutor or a court). A journalist present in crime scenes. Police investigators hacking medical records. Ordering that texts that are sent to a journalist phone need to be redirected to his own phone without the journalist's knowledge (approving a trace on the phone it's the same that granting access to your private messages?) A state agent doesn't even think that hacking medical records or intruding in private communications could be a problem? Just does it in a second like if it was a decision on a grocery item? I'm not even mentioning ethics or law abiding aspects (the brothers like to talk about "by the book" all the time though). Just common sense. I don't know.
It's a pity, as the argument for the series was interesting. But I started getting irritated by the end of the first installment with the inconsistencies and this second one was worse.

A good romance/suspense that is well written. Where is the serial killer who is stalking the men of slaughter creek? It was a pretty addictive read. There are small points of view from 'Seven', our female killer as well as the H/h. There are a couple of steamy romance scenes between the H/h, but this is all about the back story and the investigation, which I enjoyed. It's part of a series, but it's a while since I read book one and I couldn't remember it all that well, so to my mind this book can stand alone no problems. Thanks to kindle unlimited I also had free audio after I borrowed the book and the narrator did an excellent job. I listened to the first 2/3, then finished by reading. There are a few disturbing murder scenes, so be aware of that.

I didn’t like this one as much as the first one, but it was really really close. I love how the story continues, and it’s not just another random person from another random thing.

Idiotic Heroine

I honestly can't believe I finished this book. The heroine was an absolute idiot. An investigative journalist and she thought she could take on a sadistic killer? And seriously. The big reveal on Brenda's past was laughable. Why even keep it a secret? It was not a big deal at all. A promising storyline but horrible characters.

Wasn’t that disturbing…. I read one of the reviews and thought the bad ratings were because it was terrifying. Uh, you kind of got that wrong. This book neither was too bad, nor was it good enough for that 4.

People in the review section said Brenda was really annoying. Ok, so some part of me was agreeing to that, but another part of me sympathizes with her. I know it seems she only cares about the story, but I can totally get her viewpoint. People. Listen, I’m sure that you would be annoyed with government and law enforcements if the stories doesn’t get revealed. I totally can feel that frustration when you are in the dark and just want the latest news. I’m sure most of you experience that. And law enforcements will surely want to keep it a secret. Therefore the constant nagging for the truth and news. That’s how they get the news to the people. So shut your mouth and stop hating her when she does her job. Yes it seems insincere to both the police and victim’s families, but hey, I’m you were part of the audience of news, then you would want the dig in and hear the gossip. Although it didn’t really get why Nick gave in to her nags and stuff. Honestly I didn’t feel much of a connection to him which I will explain.

We never got why the dad punished Nick worse than his brother. Brenda’s parents were also a big deal for Brenda throughout the story, but we never got to know or even touch upon her parents except that she was adopted by her aunt at the end. There were so many people that were involved in different point. Like i thought the other murder and scenes were from Six. Instead one murder involves the Senator’s orders and a jealous co-worker. There is literally no point in them doing those things. Another point was that there lack a chemistry between the characters. Yes I like the idea that FBI and investigative reporter hooked up since they hate each other (generally) but I didn’t see a scene where they really worked together and solve the mystery. Brenda kept giving almost “red herring” and wrong ideology about the killings it pisses me off. And suddenly they shared a bed. Hmm😑 yea that was too fast.

Also Brenda’s “women is so underrated” I can see her standpoint but even the Nicky picky things insulted her feminist side. Like bro, have you seen stereotypes, well don’t prove them right with your annoying and constant nagging! There were so much irrelevant plot twist. There was once when seven told her she was the brothers sister. BRO it could’ve been big. I was thinking she was the actual daughter of the commanders while Nick was the adopted. Fortunately it went incest but sadly my plot went sour.

Summary: murdering of many from long lost sister to take revenge on commander and the experiments. Brenda was taken and shot and she almost died. Yea only interesting parts

The Slaughter Creek series is a thrilling action story with a strong romantic attraction that can not be denied.

Brenda Banks is a journalist looking for an exclusive story on a serial killer. She becomes so involved that the killer is leaving clues for HER.

It is a good thing that Agent Nick Blackwell is back and has gotten involved in the case. Nick and Brenda have a history together, one that refuses to stay in the past. Leaving her so many years ago has not diminished his feelings for her, or her for him.

There are many things Nick remembers about the past besides Brenda. Raised by a sadistic father who only knew his children as recruits, he trained them from a young age to be the best military personnel they could be and that training could have killed Nick.

Brenda follows the clues the killer leaves for her, she wants that exclusive story. She wants to follow the story to its conclusion, but that conclusion may end with her life. It may be a good thing that Nick's father forced trained Nick and his siblings in the way of the special forces. That training that haunted Nick may be the very thing he will need to save the woman he loves. Will it be enough or is the killer too clever?

Great storyline overall in this series but Rita's writing style is very Mad Libs and predictable at this point. This is my third series by her so I know the pattern right down to how the lovemaking scenes are going to go. The order of events is always the same. Also, no one ever meets their assailant head-on, it's always getting hit over the head and the world going black/grey/fading into darkness. Every story is ruined by a nosey reporter (I mean seriously, is that really necessary?). So yeah, it's getting pretty annoying that there's no originality and it's a plug-and-play script just with different names. I wish she'd get creative when it comes to the actual writing, and learn proper police procedure to make the scenarios more believable.

I do appreciate the plot and the amount of research that clearly went into this series. It's dark and disturbing, and it gets you thinking about some of the things our government likely has done in the name of the war machine. Good stuff, just could use some originality in the writing so I'm not skimming entire sections because I know the fill-in-the-blank style by now.

Her Dying Breath: A Slaughter Creek Novel Book 2 is by Rita Herron. This book was impossible to put down. You just had to know what was going to happen.
Two of the victims of the experiments of the CHIMES group were watching Brenda Banks give her report on the capture of Commander Arthur Blackwood. He had been missing for ten years and Sadie had thought she had killed him and so she ran. However, he hadn’t died and was now in custody. His sons, Jake and Nick, were very happy he had been caught. He had abused both of them during their lives.
In their investigation, Nick and Jake had located five of the seven victims. Four were dead and Sadie’s sister Amelia was undergoing further therapy. Now only two of the seven remained. They also suspected there was someone even higher than the Commander who was in charge. Figuring out who the other two were was essential in finding them. Commander Blackwood was not being helpful at all.
Can Nick and Jake find these two before they kill someone else or someone kills them? The book definitely keeps you on your toes.

Great story but

The "hero" was an a$$hole, in my opinion. I can't give a good review for a book of I don't like the characters and I definitely didn't like the hero. He was cold and Sooo contradictory. He says he can't be with her in one sentence and in the VERY NEXT sentence he's saying how he can't live with our her. He talks down to the heroine, suspected and accused her of murder 20 mins after sleeping with her, avoided her for YEARS because he wrongly thought she slept with his brother (he never asked either one, just assumed), every time he kisses her he says it's a mistake and storms off to avoid her. He doesn't visit her when she's in the hospital. He's cold and short with her etc etc etc He's just an ass and I was disappointed. But if u can get past all that, or don't think it would bother you, the story/mystery was really good

Just as Good as Book1

I knew the Slaughter Creek Novels were a series when I purchased them. Usually novels that make a series have the same main characters and the storylines do overlap a little. But, this series is different and I love how it is written. The Book 2 plot was a continuation of the Book 1 plot. Different parts of the plot have been solved in each book while adding new twists and turns to be solved in the next book in the series. New characters are also added. Ms. Herron's writing style is excellent, her characters are very realistic and the storyline flows smoothly. The books are a grab you by the throat from Page 1 of Book 1 and I can tell you that they won't let me go until the last page of the last book in the series!!

Meh…

This book is kind of like all the other books. I felt like I had read it all before. At first I hated it because it was so familiar it was boring, and the sappy love-story part of the book was exactly the same as the author’s previous books. The crimes however were different (thank god), but it just didn’t really tickle my fancy. Near the end it got kind of exciting (hence the three stars), but it wasn’t until I was like 80% through the book. But I bought the series already, so I feel like I have to read it, and get my money’s worth. However I also kind of feel like life is too short to be reading bad books… it served as fine “fall asleep reading” though.

After reading the first book, I automatically picked this one as my next read. It took me a while to warm to Brenda, however I persevered and began to warm to her. I did see where the story was going quite quickly, but it still kept my attention. There were also a few twists and turns I wasn't expecting.
Have downloaded the third in the series to read next.

On a side note, I will say this book does seem to have a few spelling mistakes and a couple of sentences, which just do not make sense. I have reported them on my kindle, so hopefully will be rectified in an update soon.

This book was a thrilling, yet disturbing read that was hard to put down. The book is well written and easy to follow with twists and turns all the way to the end. My only negative, I just can't stand Brenda but maybe that's the point. A good author can bring the characters to life and Rita Herron certainly does this. I can't wait to read book 3 and see which characters are developed in that book.

And the beat goes on!

The second book in this series picked up with the Sheriff's brother, (a special agent with the FBI) reuniting with his sibling and partnering to solve a case that involves their father. Just when you think nothing worse could happen, something worse happens. The book moves along at a good pace and keeps you guessing. Looking forward to its conclusion.

Didn’t disappoint

I borrowed this book as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription as an audio book.

Just as good as the first, nice and long with good plot, believable characters and is even well written. Looking forward to book number 3 which I’m off to start right now.

Didn’t need the adult scenes, but that’s just my opinion.

WHAT A RIDE!

This was the most exhilarating book I have read in a long time. It sure was a gruesome, sick and depraved scenario. Inhumane even, but I needed to read faster so I could get to the end for all the answers. I got some answers, but there are still so many more questions.
