Valley Police Department, how can I help you? I need help with my math homework. Brooke I planned on spending the rest of my life alone, with my son as my sole focus. One night out changed that–except that’s all it was. One night. Until I discovered my son had been calling the local police station daily for help with his homework everyday. The man helping my son just so happens to be the same man I went home with that night. And now, one night is looking to be a lot longer. Slade I spend every day protecting this town, serving my badge. After a nasty breakup with my ex that spread through this small town like wildfire, I was content being alone. A bachelor. Until one night out brought me a woman I was starting to reconsider my stance on dating for. Little did I know, the kid I’ve been tutoring with his homework just so happens to be her son. Her ex hates me, and I don’t care for him too much either. I’ll stop at nothing to keep those two safe. But one decision has the possibility of taking away everything I’ve started to care for.

Slade!!! Omg, he's my man! Seriously, Brooke is a lucky woman! I love their book so much! It was really hard for me to put down it was that good! I pretty much read it in one sitting! It was that good.

I would definitely reread this several times. The writing is fantastic and the way the characters come off the page. *Chef's kiss*

Slade made me swoon, laugh, cry, and it sure made me hot! I loved Slade and Brooke's banter! And her son, Cooper, is just the sweetest little boy. I loved how Slade acted with him.

I seriously can't wait for Bronx's book! Bring it! :D

“It's a moment I'll never forget, no matter what happens between us.”

Brooke only had time for one man in her life and that her son, Cooper. She is trying to be a strong mom but she is having to co-parent with her difficult ex. All she wants is what is best for Cooper. When Cooper calls 911 for Math help he gets Slade who has never made him feel like he couldn’t do it. Slade doesn’t think that he will find his person soon.

When Brooke meets Slade she sees how good it could be with someone who really cares about you. All it takes is one look and they are both falling. But will the job as a police officer interfere?

OMG!! 🔥🔥 I loved this book! I could not put it down, I was up til 1AM finishing (sorrynotsorry)
I love when and author uses things in real life that are easily relatable to. There are some trigger warning so please be sure to read. But you get to see the power of love and what happens when you truly care/are cared for someone. Thank you so much J Akridge for this ARC! Everyone will need this book releasing August 24th!!

🚔 I have no intention of hurting you. I know we just met, and things are still so new but I have never felt this way about someone this soon.” I nod in understanding. “And I know that we need to take it slow, because we have Cooper to think about, but I’m not going anywhere.

🚔 Nothing about you could scare me away, baby. Not a damn thing.

🚔 I never really believed in fate before, not until it was all out of my control. You and Cooper are the most important things to me and I want to spend the rest of my life knowing I’ll always have both of you.

💙 To find the right one, sometimes you have to let go of the wrong one. Even if that choice wasn’t yours to begin with. I’ve waited years for this, the perfect family and the amazing husband that doted on us constantly. The one who thinks his days end and begin with us. The longer you wait for something, the more you appreciate it. I’ll never take my life for granted.

I loved this book! One of the best I’ve read! I could read it 10 times over happily! I always find it so hard to find a book I really enjoy and hits all my marks but this book did just that.
Slade and Cooper are the cutest ever and the way Slade treats and acts to him is just adorable, and how Cooper felt so safe in his arms had me swooning for Slade!

Brooke & Slade had one of the best relationships I have ever seen, they talked and didn’t let pasts wreak them which I see too much in books and I’m not a fan of it.

Something I wish we could have seen was Slade’s military past in the Army cause it was mentioned and set up to be a good storyline but was never explored further. Why did Slade decide after 2 tours he was done? Did something happen to his team? To him? And I wish we saw some more angst like we saw a lot with Brooke and how she deals with Coop being kidnapped and the School Shooting and that Slade saves the day 😫. But there was some missed opportunities like when Slade went into the school building we could have had more tension and build-up to something happening in there especially considering he had many enemies which was made clear. And when Chief Hendrix went into Brett’s Family barn and he whole gun scene, that could have gone further. It could have ended in a switch around- instead of Officer Hendrix taking care of Brooke & Coop, Brooke could have taken care of Slade.

Overall this book was an amazing read and I would recommend to anyone but especially those who love a hot chief, who is not afraid to show him woman some love, will stand up for her and her kid, and will never fail to make you hot and laugh x

Slade and Brooke

This was the first book I’ve read by J. Akridge and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was slow to start but that was expected since this was the first book in the series. There was a lot of world building and a lot of Easter eggs about the plot set throughout the book. I loved trying to figure out how everything connected.

Brooke was fairly new to town and spent all her time making sure her son, Cooper, was happy. After meeting Slade, the police chief, at a bar when her ex had her son, she found herself unable to forget him. But they hadn’t gotten to exchange numbers, so when she goes to the police station to have her son apologize for using 9-1-1 to call for help with his math homework, they’re both surprised to find out that the officer who had been answering was Slade.

Slade and Brooke had a quick start, and I loved Cooper’s role in that. He was such a fun addition to their story. I loved his relationship with Slade and their connection in having dyslexia. Slade was the perfect match for Brooke and showed her what it meant to have a partner you could rely on.

I loved the suspense part of this book. It was very well done and all the pieces were laid out from the first chapter. I knew there were some things that were going to be important later in the book because they didn’t really fit with the story, and I loved figuring out all the twists.

I can’t wait to read more of this series. Bronx, Cade, Lesslie, and Heather all had things going on in the background and I’m hoping they’ll all get their stories.

Spice: 🌶🌶

Brooke is a single mom, trying her best to co-parent with her manipulative ex. Her focus is always on her son and doing her best for him until one night she heads out on the town. And her eyes lock with the Police Chief of Valley City. The attraction is instant and it leads to one night of passion that may just become more.

Slade is the chief of police in his small town. Jaded by his cheating ex and supposed friend- he isn't really looking to be in a relationship. But after a one night stand and a 911 phone call from a kid who needs help with his homework; he'll find that sometimes the best things come when you aren't looking.

Loved this book so much! Slade is everything you could want in a man- a gentleman, strong, confident.... I can go on and on. I love how he knew Brooke was what he wanted and didn't give up despite her insecurities and fears. I know he is the chief of police, but I really wished he kicked Brooke's ex-husbands behind! Seriously, that guy was a piece of work and I was so happy when Brooke started to stand up to him. And Cooper, oh how my heart hurt for the little guy. I got so upset when reading about how that teacher treated him and the lack of help he received for his dyslexia. And I know, I know these adults are more realistic and mature than most characters- but I wish Brooke would have made a bigger deal out of how that teacher treated her son.

Overall, a really wonderful read. I love men in uniform, so I can't wait to read Bronxes story when it releases!

Slade is a book that quickly nestled its way into my heart and wouldn't let go. From the moment I started reading, the chemistry between Brooke and Slade ignited the pages, making their journey one I couldn't help but become fully invested in.

The way Slade cares for Cooper, with such genuine affection, melted my heart and showed an incredibly endearing side of him. The depth of their relationship added a layer of emotional resonance that left me with a smile on my face.

And speaking of smiles, the humour sprinkled throughout the story was a delightful surprise. It felt like a breath of fresh air, perfectly balancing out the more intense moments. This made the characters feel even more relatable, like people I could genuinely connect with.

The plot took me on an exhilarating ride with unexpected twists and turns that had me eagerly turning the pages. It's that feeling of not knowing what's coming next that kept me engaged, making the book an absolute page-turner.

But what truly makes Slade special are the characters. They're not just words on a page but individuals with their own stories, quirks, and growth. Witnessing Brooke and Slade evolve over the course of the story made their journey even more captivating.

And let's not forget the supporting characters who added layers of depth to the narrative. The ensemble cast felt like a group of friends I was getting to know, enriching the story in a way that made me feel like part of their world.

OMG! I loved this one from J. Akridge, she pulls you in from the very beginning. Brooke is a single mom with the cutest son, Cooper. Slade is a local police officer. When these two meet there is an instant attraction. After their one night together, they both keep thinking of each other but don't have any way to reach out to one another.
When Brooke's son calls the police station for help with his math homework and Slade ends up taking the call talk about an awesome exchange. Slade was so helpful and understanding. The daily conversations between Slade and Cooper are enjoyable and how Slade is able to help him with his math homework is awesome. What happens when Brooke finds out and takes her son to the police station where she learns it's Slade who has been helping him, is quite entertaining. The epilogue was quite a surprise, but I loved how it was done. Couldn't have asked for a better ending.
From there how Slade helps Brooke deal with her ex even though her ex is trying to make Slade's life difficult is drama at its finest. This is one you won't want to miss out on reading. Once you pick it up and start reading you won't be able to put it down.
This is my new favorite book by J. Akridge which is saying something as I love her other books.

I received an ARC copy of this book.

I picked this book up on a whim because of Bookstagram. Honestly I thought it was a debut novel and if felt like one. I loved the love story. Slade, Brooke, and Cooper are all wonderful. I had some issues though. There was too much going on. I'm guessing this is the beginning of a new series because there are so many unanswered questions, like what is going on with Bronx and Heather and Cade and Lesslie. Then you've got a douchebag ex, a school shooting, and a kidnapping. Not to mention the weird relationship between Slade and his coworker and ex-girlfriend. Things just didn't really get wrapped up in a nice little bow. There was also a lot of polishing that this book could have used. There were many grammatical errors that irked me as well as some blatant editing issues. I had to read one section 3 times and still couldn't understand what the author was going for. Also, the excessive use of the pet name 'baby' had me eye rolling by the end. I was shocked when I found out that this author has many other published books. Ultimately I liked the happily ever after but I won't be searching for more books from this author anytime soon.

Oh and the spice was just... Okay. Pretty average. She talks about wanting him to use his handcuffs but that never happens 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thank you to J. Akridge for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review

This was such a cute read. I loved this one a lot. Slade was the perfect man. Truly on his knees for Brooke and also so in love with her adorable son, Cooper. Their dynamics were incredible and I loved seeing Brooke and Slade fall in love and finding a new purpose on their lives. Brooke deserved a man like Slade in her life. She found him and along with him she found happiness. Watching her happy and finally living her life with a man that truly cared and loved her was incredible. Cooper was such a fun little boy and I loved how much he became close to Slade. Their bond was so beautiful and I loved seeing them find comfort to eachother. Brooke was such an incredible person and mother, always there for her son and always her priority. Finding Slade meant that she finally started taking care of herself too, something she had forgotten a long time ago. Their relationship started so beautifully and blossomed even more so. The epilogue was perfect and I truly love them.

yaaaaas!

This was so fucking sweet. There was no pushing each other away or breaking up over stupid shit. This was real. It was such a great change of pace for me. I absolutely loved it. The good and bad times of being a stepfather was shown in this story as well as dealing with the abusive ex. I LOVED how he stuck up for her but didn't stick his nose in her business. It was so perfect.
I love how all the horrible things that happened it didn't drive them apart. Of course her ex demanded that she leave him - because he loved to control her - and she almost went through with it, but being the awesome MMC that he is, he put a stop to that ish and didn't allow her to push him away :)
Everything just made them stronger.

I LOVED IT.

The beginning was slow, though once they met, everything picked up. The beginning was good world building giving the background for each character but I was just like 'UUUUUGH when will they meeeeeet' But once they met, that was it. Story took off from there.

There was no handcuff scene though.

Did I read this book in one evening….why yes I did. I could NOT put it down once I started. If you’re looking for a law enforcement MMC that knows how to serve and protect (wink wink😉🥵) look no more!

What to expect:
🚔Law Enforcement MMC
💙Single Mom
🚔Small Town
💙One Night Stand
🚔He falls for her kid

Brooke is such a strong and awesome mom who is doing her best at life, all while dealing with her difficult ex. Her son Cooper is the cutest kid that you are guaranteed to fall in love with.

“You know, Slade…My mom calls me baby, too.”

Slade is seriously everything you could want in an MMC. He is protective, caring, and oh so swoony. The way he is with Cooper makes my mom heart so happy!!

Slade and Brooke had this instant draw to one another and the chemistry between them was on point. This story will suck you in and definitely take your emotions on a roller coaster ride with all the swoony and heart warming moments, as well as a few moments that will have you holding your breath and waiting to see how things turn out.

I absolutely LOVED the We Are The Millers reference 🙌🏻.

⚠️There are a couple of sensitive topics, so be sure to check the trigger warnings.

4.5 stars!! J. Akridge absolutely delivered on this police chief, single mom, small town romance!
As a single mom, Brooke’s number one priority is her son Cooper. While out, her eyes land on a certain extremely hot police chief (lookin at you Slade!) who she runs into on a rare night out! One night between them and sexy Slade can’t get Brooke out of his mind!
A young boy has been calling for help with his homework and Slade ends up being the one to help him and then looks forward to his homework calls each day.
Little did either of them know that it was Brooke’s son Cooper who Slade was helping the whole time!
When trouble finds their way, Slade will do anything to keep Brooke and Cooper safe!

I loved this book! The small town feel, the sexy Police Chief but especially the strong single mama!
Slade and Brooke’s connection was apparent from the beginning, and the way Slade just kept showing up for Brooke just made you swoon over him again and again!
I also loved that this book touched on a lot of real life issues that people reading deal with every day. Not just in the single mom space and finally having people who show up not just for you but for your kid- but also with Cooper’s learning difficulties, and school bullying. I feel like J. Akridge always has that realness to her books that keeps them extremely grounded and connected to the ones reading them.

Akridge is back with another home run right outta the ballpark. Slade is the first installment in her unforgettable and unputdownable ( Valley City Hero’s series ) And omg it was truly emotional rollercoaster that just played on all my emotions In ways I didn’t even expect. One second I was speechless, the next I felt like my heart was being ripped outta my chest , there were even times I was so freaking frustrated I almost threw my iPad right across the room . But what never wavered was how invested I became in Slade and Brooke’s characters . Their journey is so beautifully written and so emotional. It’s the perfect blend of all the things a great romance should entail. Angst , humor , witty banter , drama, love , passion, unexpected surprises, family , friendships, non stop action, off the charts chemistry, second chances and so much more . It’s a love story what will keep you up reading well into the early morning hours and have you falling in love Hook Line and Sinker

I really liked the relationship between Slade and Brooke, and Cooper was so cute and thankfully not annoying as some kids can be in books. His interactions with Slade were so sweet, he was such a great dad figure to him. Slade and Brooke had great communication there was no miscommunication or third act breakup.

It was a nice enjoyable read however there was a few things I felt were left undeveloped or unexplained. Like the guy Brett who had issues with Slade and ended up kidnapping Cooper, like why? It never told us their history just that they hated each other.
Did Marcus- coopers dad just leave them alone and stop being a douche after the kidnapping? Did he ever have any comeuppance for dropping the charges against Brett that allowed him to go on and kidnap Coop?

OWD- there’s an ex of the H that asks him to get back together a few times and annoys him but he shuts her down each time and she doesn’t cause any drama whatsoever between the mmc and fmc.

This is this first book of this series and will have you on the edge of your seat with Easter eggs of more to come with this series. Check the TW as well.

I loved this book from start to finish. I loved seeing a small town cop with some issues find love. I loved seeing a single mother who would move the earth for her child, all while finding her strength to face her demons and find love.

I loved all humor throughout the story to even out the story. I loved all the side characters and the Easter eggs that were left to lead to their stories. I would have liked to know what happened to the douche canoe of a father to her little boy though. Regardless, I’m so excited for more of this series!

I received an advanced readers copy via BookFunnel/the author. These thoughts and opinions are my own and left voluntarily after reading for my own personal enjoyment.

I’m definitely in my small town era but when you add in a cinnamon roll hero and a single mom, oh be still my heart! I loved how the town of Valley City wasn’t just a sleepy little town though, jt had its bad apples and they made the story that much more appealing. I enjoyed the action and the suspense it added.
Slade is all the things you want book boyfriends to be made of! He was swoony and sweet and sexy…*fans face*…sorry, I got sidetracked for a moment. Ok back to Slade and Brook, not only did they have instant chemistry but it was the small things over time that made me fall for them individually and then them as a couple. The way they just seemed to fit perfectly together and complement one another and then there was Cooper who was so dang cute and observant. This book made me laugh and sigh and smile, such a great read.

Slade by J. Akridge

Ok so let’s begin with saying I really hated Marcus!!! Like I really wanted to jump into the pages of the book and throat punch the man so many times. I understand how you can be scared like Brooke was of someone like Marcus but I couldn’t help scream at my kindle at her every time he came around. I was so frustrated with how much she let him walk all over her. I could have done with out that in this book. I loved the chemistry with Slade and Brooke it was fierce and palpable. I was a roller coaster of emotions with this book especially with everything that Poot Cooper goes through the trauma that poor kid is put through and one of them thanks to that poor excuse of a father of his. This book definitely had me reading page after page and on the edge of my seat and it’s one I definitely recommend.

see I knew when I started this book I was going to be absolutley sucked into this story and thrown right into a book hangover….
my god. For one… Slade is EVERYTHING. He is the Chief of Police for Valley City and has one memorable night with Brooke, the woman he met eyes with at the taco truck earlier in the week. They have a one night stand but forget to give each other their numbers…. Turns out… Brooke’s son, Cooper, has been calling the police department to get help on his math (literally crying) and it just so happens to be Slade on the other end of the phone.
This book had me feeling ALL the emotions. This is a romantic suspense book full of all the twists and turns but also full of the cutest freaking story of a man who found his family.
1000/10 recommend.

P.S. I need Bronx’s story IMMEDIATELY 😩

honestly very mid.

their relationship was just a bunch of time skips, i literally felt nothing for them as a couple.

but, i like how realistic the whole baby daddy situation was, because the way he acts is really not that exaggerated.

i loved cooper, and i loved his relationship with slade, so props for that. im a sucker for spiderman, so cooper has a special place in my heart.

im also a sucker for baseball, so that gives it a few points.

none of the stakes felt very high, so most of the conflict and everything was more boring than anything else. i love how cooper refused to leave slade after the everything though, he’s so adorable.

this book was so slow to start, like the first five chapters couldve been removed, or they all could’ve been the same chapter, and it would’ve shortened this by at least 100 pages.

I just loved this one!

🔵 Small Town
⚫️ Dual POV
🔵 Single Parent
⚫️ First Responder
🔵 Loyal BFF
⚫️ He Falls First
Annnnnnd DRAMA!

Brooke is a single mom trying to balance work, a difficult ex, small town dramatics, and raising her son.

Slade is a no-nonsense Law Enforcement officer trying to adjust to his new role as chief and dodging interaction with his ex who just can’t take a hint.

Both seem to collide when one night Brooke’s adorable kiddo Cooper Decided to call 911 for help with his math homework! 😂

The chemistry, character building, story twists and unexpected turns will have you hooked from start to finish! I loveBrooke and Slade’s relationship, the way Slade is with Cooper will melt your heart, and not to mention we all need a BFF like Heather! (You’ll see. 😉)

Brooke has been raising her son Cooper largely on her own after she split from her cruel ex. She doesn’t know that Cooper has been calling the police station every day to talk to Slade, the police chief, for help with his homework when she has a one night stand with him. Can they transition from what they think is a one and done to a long term relationship?

This is the first book in a new series about a small town. There is a bit of drama toward the end of the book around Cooper and actions by Brooke’s sketchy ex but all ends well. I liked the main characters and am looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

I read an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Some missing details pulled me out of the story but I loved the characters!

3.5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed the characters and even the general plot line (and that this was a relatively shorter book under 300 pages) but there were details/plot holes that snagged my attention and pulled me out of the story and kept me from really enjoying it. Also, while it was a bit of a slow burn, things were very insta-love at the beginning of the story which I’m not a huge fan of. I *loved* Slade’s relationship with Brooke’s son Cooper and I also enjoyed the suspense elements. Slade was a picture-perfect hero - swoony and sexy but protective and steady.

A little boy who is struggling in school with math calls the police department to get help. This event changes the course of Slade's life. Little does he know, but this little boy belongs to the woman who was checking him out at the taco truck. Brooke didn't get the happily ever after she thought she was going to get with Cooper's father. He is a royal jerk, and tries to manipulate Brooke to doing what he wants her to. That all changes when Brooke checks out Slade at the taco truck, and then meets him at a bar. Their one night stand turns into something that neither Brooke or Slade planned on.

I loved this book and not just for the romance. but the characters as well. I thought Brooke was a great mom to Cooper. He is such a loveable boy. Instantly, everyone who met him could not help but smile. His interactions with Slade will melt your heart.

I do want to mention that you need to get yourself a best friend like Heather. I love that she had Brooke's back and would do anything for her. Back to Slade and Brooke. The chemistry that these two were giving off each other was HOT. Once, Brooke gave into Slade, they could not keep their hands off each other. There is that one scene where they get locked in Slade's police cruiser after getting intimate. That was a funny moment. J. Akridge "Slade" me with this steamy, must read!

I’m loving this new side to j,
if you’ve read her other books than you knew to expect the least expected.

You ever met someone, and instantly know they’re going to change your life??

Slade is everything you expected, The Alpha, The protector, The Hero. Everything you ever needed. The way he was with his Cooper made my heart melt. Sometimes it’s not the Sperm donor who makes a great dad. It’s the bonus one.

Cooper was so amazing, imagine calling 911 for math homework. 🤣🤣
Then the guy you have daily con is with turns to your hero🧡❤️

Slade by J, Akridge is book one in the Valley City Hero’s series. This is a small town, single mom, Police Officer romance. This is a story, with multi POVs, fantastic spice, and a HEA.

This book was completely off my radar and by a new to me author. This story kept me wanting more. I was so invested that I just had to know what was coming up next.

The main characters are Slade and Brooke. These two have an instant connection. It’s powerful and intense very spicy, I recommend this book.

If you like small town single mom romances, you'll love Brooke and Slade's story. What a cute story that will grab your attention right at the beginning. The chemistry between them was explosive. Wow, what a cute son Cooper was and can you believe he called the police station for help with his homework and Slade actually tutored him. Well written with likable characters that you'd love to have for friends. I read an arc via the author and voluntarily chose to review it.
