The Ivy Tree

Rate this book
After his rodeo accident, Truman James was just going home to his grandmother's farmhouse to stay a few weeks while his broken leg healed. He surely didn't expect to be awakened the first morning he was there by a snaggle-toothed kid and his sassy Irish mother, who'd moved right into the house with him.

Allie McCleary wouldn't have ever consented to move to Dougherty, Oklahoma, if she'd known Truman had the freedom to use the house, too. And she sure didn't expect Truman James to be the magic she'd been searching for since her husband was killed five years before.

The rest is what happens when you cross a handsome-beyond-words bull rider with a mostly-Irish lass with a temper to match her rich chestnut brown hair and mossy green eyes. It's the story of an old ivy covered elm tree in the corner of the yard, sitting in dormancy like Allie's heart and rooted deep in the rich ranch soil, like Truman's soul.

Will they realize that the real fight lies within their hearts? Although they're as mismatched as oil and water, they have fallen in love. Can either of them admit it?

Hi! I'm twenty five years old and movie star gorgeous. The camera added thirty plus years and a few wrinkles. Can't trust those cameras or mirrors either. Along with bathroom scales they are notorious liars! Honestly, I am the mother of three fantastic grown children who've made me laugh and given me more story ideas than I could ever write. My husband, Charles, is my strongest supporter and my best friend. He's even willing to eat fast food and help with the laundry while I finish one more chapter! Life is good and I am blessed!

Reading has been a passion since I was five years old and figured out those were words on book pages. As soon as my chubby little fingers found they could put words on a Big Chief tablet with a fat pencil, I was on my way. Writing joined reading in my list of passions. I will read anything from the back of the Cheerio's box to Faulkner and love every bit of it. In addition to reading I enjoy cooking, my family and the ocean. I love the Florida beaches. Listening to the ocean waves puts my writing brain into high gear.

I love writing romance because it's about emotions and relationships. Human nature hasn't changed a bit since Eve coveted the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Settings change. Plots change. Names change. Times change. But love is love and men and women have been falling in and out of it forever. Romance is about emotions: love, hate, anger, laughter... all of it. If I can make you laugh until your sides ache or grab a tissue then I've touched your emotions and accomplished what every writer sets out to do.

I got serious about writing when my third child was born and had her days and nights mixed up. I had to stay up all night anyway and it was very quiet so I invested in a spiral back notebook and sharpened a few pencils. The story that emerged has never sold but it's brought in enough rejection slips to put the Redwood Forest on the endangered list. In 1997 Kensington bought two books for their Precious Gems line. Two years and six books later the line died with only four of those books seeing publication. But by then Avalon had bought a book and another, and another. Ten years later the list has grown to thirty nine. Last year Sourcebooks bought the Lucky Series which is in the bookstores now. They've also bought The Honky Tonk Series which will debut with I LOVE THIS BAR in June and will be followed by HELL, YEAH, MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED, and HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS.

Folks ask me where I get my ideas. Three kids, fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Note: I was a very young grandmother! Life is a zoo around here when they all come home. In one Sunday afternoon there's enough ideas to keep me writing for years and years. Seriously, ideas pop up at the craziest times. When one sinks its roots into my mind, I have no choice but to write the story. And while I'm writing the characters peek over my shoulder and make sure I'm telling it right and not exaggerating too much. Pesky little devils, they are!

I have a wonderful agent, Erin Niumata, who continues to work magic and sell my work. I'm very lucky to have her and my editors who continue to believe in me.

Happy reading!

Sweet story about two people who weren't looking for love but found it in an unexpected way. Ever since her husband's death five years earlier Allie's emotions have been pretty well frozen over. The only thing that keeps her going is her seven year old son. When she's offered the chance to stay at an old farmhouse for a few months as a way to break out of her grief, she takes it. She doesn't expect to come downstairs one morning to find a cowboy asleep in her living room. Truman has come to his grandmother's house to recover from the broken leg he got while bull riding. He's not too happy to find a sassy woman and her son already living there. Once they get over their initial anger they have to learn to get along and share the house.

I liked Allie a lot. She's been emotionally numb for five years, but she has enough to be a great mom to her son Linc. Being offered the use of the farmhouse has been a great chance to get away from the memories and pressures of home. The peacefulness enables her to work on the paintings that have been commissioned from her. That peace is disrupted by Truman's arrival. Since neither of them will give way they have to get along. I loved the sparks that are evident right away. Truman stirs up emotions that have been buried since her husband's death. Since Truman is nothing like her late husband or what she envisions in her future she tries to ignore them. I did think her visions of a man with a briefcase and a three piece suit were a bit on the snobby side, along with her initial attitude toward Truman. I liked the way that attitude changed the more she got to know him, but she continued to hide from her feelings for a long time. The scene in the ambulance after the rodeo was very moving and really opened her eyes to her true feelings.

Truman was a pretty laid back guy except when he was around Allie. There was something about her that riled him up. I liked the way that he seemed to push her buttons on purpose once in awhile just to see her react. I loved the way he was so good with Linc. It was obvious he would be a good father someday. One of the things that Truman was doing while recovering from his broken leg was thinking about his future. He realized that he's getting old for bullriding and needs to decide what to do with his future. He decides he's ready to spend more time on his property and start the ranch that has been his dream. He pictures a small, quiet country woman living there with him, but it isn't long before that picture starts to change and he realizes he's fallen for her. He just has to get her to see it.

I loved the way the ivy tree was used to symbolize both Allie and Truman. Allie saw herself as the tree, lying dormant until Truman wrapped his love around her like the ivy was wrapped around the tree. Truman saw himself as the tree, with his roots buried deeply in the soil of the farm and Allie has the ivy with roots not as deep but wrapping him in love.

I thought Linc was an adorable character with the way he chattered along, barely taking a breath. He was an important part of showing Allie what a good man Truman was.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Allie McCleary lost her husband, Taylor, five years ago and she really lost herself as well. Her grandmother Emma, and her friend, Bert thought relocating may help ease her pain and help her move on. So Allie and her seven-year-old son Linc packed up and moved to the country, Dougherty, Oklahoma, into an old farmhouse owned by Bert.

Truman James has been on the rodeo circuit for many years but was thrown off a bull, the bull rolled with him, and “a couple of tons of weight landed on his leg” and broke it. Out of commission for at least 6 weeks he decides to visit his grandmother’s farm knowing there is plenty of work to keep him busy and her meals would surely help him to heal up faster. He never expected that his grandma wouldn’t be home and that a bossy Irish woman and her kid would be living in her house. They both called their grandmothers and were basically told “suck it up buttercup”. Then both women packed their bags and left on a cruise.

These characters were very engaging. Allie is a strong woman and had her guard up not wanting to get hurt again. She hopes a new man much like Taylor will come along in his three-piece suit carrying his briefcase and sweep her off her feet. Until then she will keep painting her coffee shop pictures and focus on her son Linc. Linc is a normal seven-year-old kid bursting with energy and talking a mile a minute. He loves living on the farm especially after Truman arrives with his horse. Truman is more laid back and he sure likes to push Allie’s buttons. He may settle down someday with a quiet country girl that is a “short little blonde who comes just up to his shoulder and will make a whole house full of kids just like him”. The banter between Allie and Tru was entertaining and their attraction sparks right from the start. I really liked the way Truman did things with Linc, telling him stories, taking him horseback riding, and teaching him how to care for the horse. He even gives the little boy a very special gift.

The ivy tree was such a great theme throughout the story. Allie is drawn to the tree and sets aside the flower paintings that are sold in coffee shops to paint the tree and it wasn’t easy. She wants to get the squirrels that live in the ivy-covered elm just perfect and the ivy needs to be just right. Later she wants it to carry the memory of a special day. Then one day she has an epiphany realizing that the tree symbolizes her life. Truman has one as well.

I am not sure exactly what year the author set this story in but the fact that the characters did not have cell phones and that Garth Brooks and Billy Ray Cyrus‘ early hits were mentioned along with some of the fashion choices I would say the late 80s or early 90s.

The Ivy Tree is a heartwarming feel-good story where the characters realize what they need is right before their eyes. A quick read with a delightfully happy ending. Ms. Brown’s books are always a nice little escape.

Rodeo bull rider on the mend Truman James came to winter at the family farm house. Tru expected an empty house but it was full of still grieving widow/artist Allie McCleary and her seven-year-old, Linc. Neither adult was prepared or willing to accept the change in their living situation. Linc was ecstatic, certain Tru was a late Christmas present from Santa.

Allie’s determined to have a short break from the tearoom paintings with the ivy tree she can see from her painting room window and it becomes a mutable symbol for her. Winter moves on bringing its own beauty and healing to the combative adults as Tru tries to stay firm in his desires in this soft romance.

Sweet Romance

Allie is a very stubborn woman, but in the end she is also a very scared and worrisome about the future, after being widowed at a young age and left to raise a very energetic little boy, she is allowed in my eyes, I'm an glad that she was able to see beyond the past to find a future with the cowboy who she never imagined would still her heart!! This book teaches you that sometimes what you look for in the future is not always right and if you get out of the way of yourself, good things fall right into place!!

Solidly Carolyn Brown

I enjoy reading Carolyn’s stories because more often than not, they are about a strong female protagonist who has hardened her heart to love and along comes the antithesis is what she thinks she wants and finds love again. You can find the author’s patented phrases sprinkled throughout all her stories which alternate between endearing and annoying. A good “popcorn” read is guaranteed with any of the author’s stories.

Great Read

Well written.Want to say if you have not read"the Ladies Room" by Carolyn Brown, you are missing a jewel.First book by her that I ever read, and I have reread it more times than I can count. It had me laughing most of the time and looking for a real Billy Lee Tucker.Know there has got to be one somewhere, and also feeling the pain that Trudy went through in finding truths in her life. Both books well written and thought out.Happy endings which I like.

Opposites attract

Opposites attract and Ally and Truman prove it in this wonderful story. They end up sharing an old farmhouse when he breaks his leg bull riding and she's trying to get her bearings after being widowed at a young age.

It takes separating to realize that the feelings are real and they're made for each other. A fun and entertaining story about letting true love guide you.

Carolyn Brown never disappoints when it comes to a light romance reading! Even though the ending is inevitable, the story of the characters must be followed to appreciate the twists and turns! The Ivy Tree showed the reader how our own established expectations can crumble when the right person comes into our path.

Great love story!

I can’t get enough of Carolyn Brown books. This is about a widow with a child and a bachelor. They are both so strong and independent they don’t see what is right there for them to grab onto. They get the happily ever after in the end. The son is an absolute favorite in this book

It would be wonderful to have a chance to go spend some time on a small farm/ranch. Have the time to reset our creative self and just take a deep breathe in a new place where there is time to just bee. I loved the" Ivy Tree ". It is a sweet romance that was great fun story of a new family coming together. I will read this book over and over.

This book felt old. References to billy Ray Cyrus, Floyd Cramer and Garth Brooks made me wonder what the time period was. I haven't seen sharp creased jeans in years, much less on a cowboy. I only know one person that wears a french twist and she's old. The storyline was rushed. It was okay for a quick read but nothing special.

Delightful read

This was so wonderfully written. I laughed out loud at times. I cried with both joy and sadness. I felt full if anticipation and at times frustration. Carolyn expressed in this book an entire gamut of emotions through life experiences, current and remembered. I could barely put it down until the end.

Quite Ggod!

I’m not a romantic person, but I really liked this book. So good! It’s nice to read something that’s not so dark every once in a while, as I tend to do. I think each character in the story was well written, and likable, well, except the male neighbor who was a bit forward. Just shows that sometimes love comes from where we least expect it.

Sweet story

This story has great characters, and a good plot. What I like most, however, is the ending. What a sweet ending! I love the son in this book! He is so "real"! Read this book! You won't be disappointed! No sex scenes..... I recommend this book for ages 13+.
