FINAAAALLY shiho admitted to aki that she’s still in love with her 😭 i’m gonna read vol 9 straight away to find out more even tho it’s not in manga form yet. thank god for the internet. i really enjoyed this volume 💕
The festival arc keeps on trucking and we see where everything went wrong for Shiho and then went wrong again. But there’s no stopping Himari and, if there’s suddenly no point to the bet between the two bands, what, exactly, could be left?
After the incredibly ‘that’s a bit much’ tone of Laurelay’s fraught origin story, this volume decides to throttle back a bit and go for high drama rather than excessive and it’s much better for it. There’s still a few quirks to the writing that I don’t love, but this is overall a great series.
Shiho’s revelation that she was in love with Aki comes with instant regret that she said anything and she rips Himari a new one for being so meddlesome. Which, fair point, but she does mean well.
This leads to a softening of Shiho that isn’t entirely unwelcome and also comes from her looking at herself and just not liking what she sees. It doesn’t take as much of her edge off as you’d think, Shiho is going to Shiho, and just makes her arc that much better.
Past-version Aki says exactly what Shiho needs when her old bandmates drop her for being too perfectionist and demanding too much of them for what they consider to be for fun. Aki recognizes Shiho’s skill and encourages it and that ego stroking turns into a friendship.
And, just as Shiho realizes that this is something more and works up her courage, she then stumbles upon Aki meeting Yori, which has a profound impact on both of them (poor Yori is so not responsible, yet also the focal point of all this) and elegantly lines up with Aki’s earlier arc in the series.
What we finally find out, after some more effort by Himari, is that Aki simply didn’t realize any of this and Shiho just left everything to fester between them once Yori appeared. It is neither the first nor last problem that could have been managed with communication, but the air finally gets cleared.
Well, sort of. The conversation that ensues implies some very willful ignorance on Aki’s part and she just might be the series’ true villain by virtue of all the chaos she’s caused. The best part of all this finally becoming text is that it leads to the more interesting question of ‘what next?’ for everybody.
The major downside is that while Himari plays a major role - there’s no question none of this gets fixed without her being her and refusing to mind her own business - there’s not much focus on Yori, nor the two of them together.
Luckily, what we do get is pretty choice. The festival date is pretty cute, if brief, and you can tell where Yori’s story is headed when she doesn’t want Himari to know what her class is doing the second she mentions it (there’s arguably an even better payoff to this in the omake as well, which has Aki dead to rights).
But the way that plays out? Oh, it’s great. Besides the simple moment of role reversal from earlier in this arc, the ensuing five seconds of drama cranks up the sparks real hard, real fast. When these two get carried away it’s always a treat and this moment is another standout and my favourite part of the book.
I think that’s why I get annoyed when they don’t show more of the relationship at this point - it’s so good when the mangaka does it that I just want that more than any of the other very good stuff.
My usual issues persist, with the yuri paradise stuff and the way this does look to be all gay all the time and out to resolve things as pat as possible, but dang if it hasn’t made me root for Shiho to maybe find some happiness now that we know more about her. And given how she started off, that’s no mean feat.
4.5 stars - well, I wasn’t planning to give this the full 5, but I had to re-read it for some notes and it straight up grabbed me again at how well things get handled in this volume, such that I just got over all my issues with it. Re-reads are handy that way.
Another solid volume what can I say! I'm so glad that it looks like Shiho's arc is wrapping up, it's well written and has plenty of crazy drama but it is starting to take away from the main characters. She's basically a main character now. I really do love her arc though she went from super unlikable to an amazing character that you actually feel bad for. Though I do think her actions were a bit extreme, but again she is a high schooler, I did stupid shit at that age too. Anyways glad to see it all wrapped up but it just took up too much of the volume. I really wish there was more Himari Yori. Though Himari is still the MC I feel, I mean she's the one trying to help Shiho and all. And she has a little conflict about if she was even right to do so, though its really just her going 🥺why did I have to but in. I think the main problem is there's not much Yori here I mean she's there, but she's kinda just thrown into the page to have a cute moment with Himari and that's kinda it. I've seen yuri manga do this where the main couple gets shoved to the side to focus on another character. I mean there's only so many romantic plots you can do that adding another character to the mix is vital. But even they've been together for a few volumes they don't feel as solid as a couple. They're cute yes, but the b plot is taking so much of the time that they're romance is taking a back seat. The romance feels like the b plot now. And while the drama is good, I really really wish there was a balance between the romance plot and Shiho plot. I think I'm gonna give this 3.5 stars just cuz it's what I like in the other volumes but I'm really just waiting for this conflict to wrap up and we can get to a different conflict or plot. Or I guess this might be wrapping up? I really just want to read volume 9, but there's no word on an English release. I wish I could read the whole series instead of waiting months for each volume. I think waiting so long does make it hard to follow the series. But the story is really compelling so I keep reading haha. I guess that's how it gets you. I always wait for the official English release but I think I might read the next right away...
goddd the way the way this volume just makes you FEEL for Shiho so much. i'm glad she finally came clean and confessed her love to Aki... only to realize that those feelings she thought she had left in the past are still very much with her. i love tragedy i love drama <3 Aki you're oblivious as hell god bless you my child
also when Momoka said "let's give Kyou-chan the best performance she's ever heard" before they took stage yeah that made me tear up. i am not even kidding, i don't think i'll ever be over that storyline
oh and i totally feel Hima's insecurity and fear of being left :( i am glad Yori was able to reassure her enough ^_^
sidenote i think i half-jokingly said on my review for last volume that there's not a single straight girl in here but apparently that's not even an exaggeration because WHAT DO YOU MEAN MIKI'S CLUBMATE IS CRUSHING ON HER LMAOOOO

i don’t think it was the author’s intention, but i found the friendship between hajime, momoka, and shiho to be kind of… superficial? like, okay, they came together because they all miss kyou. but this whole “i have my problems and she has hers so i won’t get involved” thing felt really shallow to me. shiho is the most immature out of all of them, deciding to cut aki out of her life completely because she doesn’t want to tell her how she feels. okay, her choice, but wow, the drama lol. teenagers are something else. she was about to confess to aki and then saw that aki was in love with yori. himari feeling jealous because yori is popular, and yori going to comfort her and kissing her ajdjsfjd. i liked that shiho told aki she was in love with her, and that the song she plays at the school festival is meant to say goodbye to that first love.

I'm glad things are taking shape between the characters, and yes, I'm secretly hoping there is hope for Shiho. However, it looks like I'd need to wait until next YEAR for volume 9 to drop?! Lmaoooo. I did hear there was an anime out for it, which makes me hesitant to watch it if it's not done. I don't think I can wait for volume 9, but I'm inspired to watch the anime. Curious what more the author will create post this manga series. I could have sworn this was going to be the final volume, but as it was winding down and the bomb being dropped towards the end, it makes sense. I'm just impatient lol 😝
Decided to jump back into this series and power through the volumes I had left. So this review is for Volumes 7-10.
I just adore these two. They are so sweet and I just want more of their relationship constantly. I was shocked with one relationship but really happy that it happened by the end of the series. It's such a cozy series. Ends in such a lovely way and has some sweet extras in the last volume.
This series is really having some emotional moments. First the history of Shiho and the feelings of her past are brought to light and in-between it all our favorite couple of Himori and Yori seem to be heating up. It will be very interesting to see where this series goes from here.
The amount of groundbreaking tea that was spilled in this volume is crazy. I hate that I now have to wait until SEPTEMBER to find out what happens next. Either that or I have to become fluent in Japanese so I don’t need the translated versions.
I think trying to gaslight the reader into liking a morally bankrupt jerk and painting an innocent character as the ACTUAL villain is absolute garbage. I am furious. What is Eku thinking?!
I really enjoyed this volume. Aki and Shiho need their own manga! There was a lot going on in this volume and I'm excited to see what happens next with all the characters!
