As the hordes of Attila the Hun descend upon on a dissolving Roman Empire, Shield Brother Zeno must protect an envoy sent to draw the Burgundians to Rome’s side in what promises to be a battle for the ages. In time, however, we come to understand that neither the envoy nor his Burgundian guide is quite who they seem …

The great, dreaded conqueror, Attila the Hun has launched his promised invasion of Gaul (Roman France). The territory is sure to fall unless General Aetius, effectively the de facto ruler of the vast Western Empire, can summon a sturdy, well-equipped army. Alas, the able military leader’s funds have been siphoned off by corrupt officials. He has no fighting force and so must gather volunteers from the barbarian nations of Gaul. All is lost, unless Zeno, a canny, courageous Shield Brother can somehow spirit an inexperienced envoy, the general’s own son, Gaudentius, through the treacherous northern wilds to track down a rich, but reluctant Burgundian king. Their road is difficult and populated by thieves and traitors. They meet a brash, capable Burgundian warrior and guide, Dancmart, along the way. Zeno hopes the delegation’s troubles are over. In fact, they’ve just started.

Anselm Audley’s harrowing, action-adventure story is an exciting story inspired by the acclaimed Foreworld Saga.

Very Medieval Interest

5 stars are because the adventure was constant and the characters interesting. The names were hard to remember because they seemed to be authentic to the period of the story.
