Thank you NetGalley and Random House Austrailia for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I have not read many books with a medical romance. I admit I am afraid of them being cheesy. This was read was light and the romance between Alley and Rohan was a lot fun. Somehow this author made taking things slow very realistic and did not demean Alley in anyway which I appreciated. I like authors like this that take the time to make interactions and medical situations as realistic as possible. I would read more books from Virginia Taylor.

I really loved the premise of this novella and I was saddened not to be able to rate it higher than three stars because it had so much promise. Sadly for me, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations, and I admit that may be my fault for setting them too high.

While it’s true I had issues connecting with this novel (as explained below), I do want to take the time here to commend Virginia Taylor on her narrative. Minus the pacing error, the writing was brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed her use of imagery, and the way in which she told the story. I enjoyed reading this narrative and will keep my eyes out for any of her work in the future, because I do believe she shows a lot of promise as an author. Especially considering she took on such a huge genre here – the medicine industry is massive in romance at the moment – and while there were Grey Anatomy’s moments, the narrative itself felt original despite these similarities (i.e. two doctors, one hospital and a famous past and status of one).

A lot of people struggle with creating sensible, but believable dialogue in their writing, and I had to give Virginia Taylor a massive high five here, for she not only excelled at a very difficult component of the writing, but she knocked my expectations out of the ballpark here. Rohan and Ally are a lot of fun as characters, and its evident through her writing that Virginia had fun writing them, but what’s admirable even more, is they have this undeniable chemistry and battle through words. Their dialogue is witty, and it made you want to read faster to know what will come out their mouths next as both characters seek to challenge the other further, to push them just that little bit further out of their comfort zone. I loved it. Hands down the best dialogue I’ve read in a book this year.

My biggest issue with this narrative was that it felt rushed. I liked the characters and their situation, I loved their witty banter, but ultimately I felt confused by their actions. One minute they are all hot for each other, the next stone cold. They say one thing, but do the exact opposite. What’s more I felt I couldn’t connect properly with them as their romance was pushed too quickly. I know it sounds stupid, especially when you consider that this being a romance novella and all, and thus by its format’s definition it is short, but I just wanted a bit more. And I feel that with this story, Virginia could have probably stretched it out a bit more. Elaborated a bit more on some of the pair’s nuances, and developed their relationship a bit further (both personally and professionally) before the ending came soaring around the corner. It felt like mere weeks had passed, not months and then all of a sudden there was the big reveal at the end (which I refuse to spoil for you) that I just wasn’t fully convinced with it nor by it. For one, I mean the pair rocked up to celebrate a friends success and then they do what they do? It just didn’t fit. It felt rushed and tied too tightly without many of the issues resolved. And personally I just wanted more time to get to know them, for them to get to know each other and explore their relationship, because at the end of the day I had the same fears as they did, but I also wanted the ending they got as well for them. And I just don’t know what to do with that mix yet.
As a whole, I do recommend Dr. No Commitment to romance readers, as Virginia does offer up a great story to the medical romance genre. In particular fans of Grey’s Anatomy will love this novella, as it shares a lot of the same characteristics as the show and will thus ensure the books popularity. As for everyone else, read it to witness the dialogue, it’s a lot of fun, and this narrative is short and sweet. You will be rewarded for your efforts. I do love the Random Romance series – they’re so fun and well written. What’s been missing so far in the series is a medical romance – but never fear, Dr No Commitment is here! I’m not always a fan of this subgenre because the hospital parts can be a bit hit and miss (it is really rare that you have more than 5-10 minutes to socialise), but Virginia Taylor does this setting well. (Plus, she acknowledges that she’s taken some liberties with the way the hospital runs – she’s now star status in my book).

The book’s heroine is Ally, a new nurse consultant at the Women’s Hospital. She’s travelled from Melbourne for this promotion and she’s aiming to be the best nurse she can be. Ally knows from her mother’s experience that you need to have a good career to look after yourself – you can’t rely on a man to do it. She moves into a beautiful old house with three men, all doctors. Angus and Hamish are twins, quietly focused on their careers and genuinely friendly. Rohan, their cousin, is cocky and self-assured. He and Ally have an immediate camaraderie that keeps getting steamier and steamier. Ally’s been warned that Rohan doesn’t commit – he’s a society boy with models dangling off his arm, but is that the real Rohan?

Ally’s a lovely girl – she’s smart, friendly and not afraid to stick to her guns when she thinks she’s right. When it comes to Rohan, she’s less assured, but still has the self-control to stop things when she’s not ready. Rohan was a different kettle of fish for me – he can he charming and thoughtful, but I found him to be rude and arrogant at times. Kissing another woman in front of Ally to make her jealous? Ew. Some of the things he says to Ally as well were condescending – I was glad to see him taken down a peg or two in the workplace. Fortunately, when all is revealed he is (almost) redeemed in my book.

Taylor writes very well – the hospital scenes were well done and the banter between Ally and Rohan was humorous. I liked how she made one of the models, Jo, a fully fleshed character rather than a stereotype. The twins were also sweet and caring supporting characters – I wouldn’t mind reading about either of them in their own story! As for the romance, there’s some fairly steamy stuff but the most important thing to learn is the front seat of a Porsche is not for getting it on!

Dr No Commitment is set in Adelaide, and again Taylor does a great job with the setting. I haven’t visited Adelaide for several years, but now I have the urge to wander through the greenbelt and take in some great food in lovely green surrounds.

The only part of the book I disagree with is that the cover states ‘novella’. I read this on a Kindle, so can’t tell you the page numbers, but it took me two nights of solid reading. The story is multilayered and well fleshed out, so I’d call it a novel.

This is a great book for summer nights – fun and flirty!

Thanks to Random House for the eARC.

I wouldn't say this is a novella. At 161 pages on my e-reader, it struck me as the same length as a full-length category novel - so don't expect a novella you can gobble in under an hour. While the prose is really very easy to get through, reading this book from start to finish does take more than an hour!

That being said, this sure is one quick read. Again, not the under-an-hour kind, but one of those books that read effortlessly and just wrap you up inside the plot and setting, pitting you right there beside the characters as you watch it all happen like a movie inside your mind.

I loved Rohan - he was really a well-developed character, and all his secrets did make sense in the big scope of thing; he wanted a woman to love him for who he is, not what he stands for. His cousins Angus and Hamish were also well sketched, as was Jo, the model 'pursuing' him throughout the book. Ms. Taylor did a great job there.

Ally herself was a pretty solid character, but I sometimes wanted to whack her over the head because of her insecurity were Rohan is concerned. While she appears totally in possession of all her marbles in public or outwardly when with him, I didn't like the very big doubt she cast over herself internally, asking herself if she'd be good enough for a man like Rohan.

I loved the secrets angle, reading much because I wanted to see how it would all be revealed and what would come up for scrutiny. However, Ally's total lack of knowledge about Rohan and his name/status/position in today's world of Googling every man we'd come across in our lives struck me as a bit far-fetched, and that kinda dampened my appreciation for this book. Like, many a time, I found myself wanting to slap Ally on the back of her head and go, "Google him up!"

But otherwise, a deligthful, light and fresh read. The hospital angle didn't overwhelm, and the medical side didn't take over the romance, since that one happened mainly in the house. Witty, warm, and engaging - the perfect feel-good romance.

Original Review: Dr No Commitment Book Review

It is a long time since i have reviewed a book due to my busy work schedule! And now, once i have got some time, i really like to review Dr No commitment. Isn't the name itself shows some interest, a unique name which captures your attention.
Yeah, so even though i decided to read this book, i was not much impressed with the blurb, i thought it is the same old romance between a good, sweet girl and a commitment-phobic guy, just with a scenario change! But, let me say i was in a mood to read a simple, easy romance which will just make you feel good, not much drama or conflicts. And this one was exactly what i needed and i enjoyed reading it very much.
I loved both Ally and Rohan, so perfect together! Ally was a sweet and so strong, she never wanders from the career path she had decided for herself. I enjoyed , the contrasts of her character - she was so confident in her career whereas she equally had a sensitive side, with little bit of insercurity. And Rohan...wow...he is a sweetheart...what we see on the surface and what was portrayed to others was just a screen , he is a great guy who was not really a commitment-phobic but was waiting for the right girl :) and when the right girl comes, he was all for it and was ready to do anything for her. It was a sweet romance...great chemistry, lots of funny scenes and interactions. Everything was enjoyable except Rohan keeps lots of secrets from Ally and that i did not like! It could have avoided some of the heartache for Ally. Anywas, even if there were lot of misunderstandings, the resulting HEA was that much sweet and worth the read.
Nice work Ms Taylor...looking forward to more from you.

Ally is a mid-wife working at a hospital in a town where she recently moved. She lands the perfect apartment with 3 gorgeous men, but she has no time for a man in her life... especially the play boy Rohan Sinclair. Ally, new to town doesn't realize that Rohan, the new doctor to her ward is also a rich heir and most eligible and sought after bachelor.

Rohan is unsure what to make of Ally. Every instinct says no commitments, but Ally doesn't know who he his and might actually like him for himself. Now he will pull out all his wooing techniques to capture Ally, but with hearts on the line someone is bound to get hurt.

Dr. No Commitment is a cute and endearing story. Virginia Taylor provides comedy, wit, charm, romance and sex appeal in this enjoyable contemporary romance.

I received this ARC copy of Dr No Commitment from Random House Australia Pty Ltd - RHA eBooks Adult in exchange for an honest review. This book is set for publication December 2, 2013.

This is was book that I wasn't expecting to get hooked into!

Virginia Taylor did a superb job with character development- enough so that by the end, I could practically feel what Ally felt. I LOVE when an author is able to do that! As for the leading male, Rohan, I was a bit nervous starting out, since he was a bit of a playboy, but his character was developed so that you couldn't NOT like him.

It took me a little time to understand the Australian medical terminology and convert it to American medical terminology, but it wasn't too difficult!

I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author!

I love Rohan he is so cocky that is so sexy. He is full of insecurities and his Past makes him afraid of commitment. This book has so many twists. I love how he was the one afraid of commitment at the beginning than that changed. It's not big of a romance novel is not all roses and chocolates or dedicating music, but is more like I am going to use you for sex and your going to like it. They are both strong characters. They both have great jobs and she knows she doesn't need him or anyone for that matter. This is a great book I truly recommend it..

This book is about a 3.5 for me. I liked the characters in this book. Thought they were both young, fresh and funny. At times I felt the story was dragging, others I felt it was rushed. But I liked the story and author is a good writer.

Another romantic novella from the omnibus that I for some reason borrowed in a moment of sheer madness, and this one in case you wondered is not about the villain from James Bond, no Dr No here this is a typical short form romance book, with not much going for it aport I guess from the length, nothing to see here.

This is my first published book and dear to my heart because it mirrors my experiences as a midwife. I didn't have a Rowan, because I married half way through my training, but I met lots of Rowans during my general nurse training. A few are still good friends.

To Mills and Boon ish, definitely wasn't after a relationship which was irritating. So I didn't bother finishing (despite it being a short book, Rohan was very annoying). Can't deal with the mucho male attitudes of woman having to do what the guy says.

When midwife Ally moves to Adelaide to start a new job and into a share house, she is warned about her housemate Rohan Sinclair. He’s gorgeous and he’s definitely got a reputation of not sticking around. Rohan, who is about to start a new position as an obstetrics registrar and Ally will be living together and working together and Ally is determined not to ruin that with an ill advised one night stand. She’s not very experienced but she’s not interested in that and her house is too good a deal to pass up. She doesn’t want to run the risk of things going sour and having to move out.

So she keeps him at arms length – or tries to and reminds him of his giant ego at every opportunity. But it gets harder and harder for her to remember why she’s keeping him at a distance when he’s funny and sweet and he makes her feel like no one else has made her feel before. However then there’s Jo to consider – the beautiful model who is always hanging around waiting for Rohan. Ally has seen the way he sometimes tries to dodge her and she doesn’t want that to be her in the future.

But there’s only so long she can resist Rohan’s charm and determined pursuit. As their personal lives collide and work throws them together even more, Ally has to hope that she’s not making the biggest mistake of her life and that she might have just tamed the Dr afraid of commitment.

Dr No Commitment is a very fun and light-hearted romantic comedy featuring doctors and a midwife now working as a nursing consultant in a busy Adelaide hospital. Rohan Sinclair is wealthy and privileged and a regular on the Adelaide social circuit but Ally, who has just moved to the city from Melbourne, has no idea who he is and he finds this incredibly refreshing. For perhaps the first time in a long time, Rohan has a chance with meeting a woman who doesn’t know who he is and doesn’t know who his family is. Ally is down to earth and not afraid to let Rohan know when his ego is getting out of control – which is a lot of the time! The two of them live in a share house with Rohan’s cousins Angus and Hamish, identical twins who also work in medicine. The four of them have busy, demanding schedules but Rohan and Ally seem to find a lot of time to spend together and despite the fact that she’s been warned off him and has seen him and his flirtatious ways, she can’t help but be intrigued and attracted.

I loved the setting of this novel – Ally is a midwife working as a consultant (although I’m not entirely sure what this job involves) on the fifth floor at a hospital in Adelaide which has deliveries and new mothers. Rohan starts working with her soon after the start of the novel as a learning obstetrician and the two of them have several conversations about the roles of doctors versus midwifes (nurses) which are some really fun interactions. Having had two kids myself, I like stories that feature childbirth or the roles of midwives. Both of mine were born with just a midwife tending – in fact for my entire second pregnancy I never once clapped eyes on an OB. For my first pregnancy I saw one for 5 minutes at 36wks and one popped in when I was in 1st stage of labour for a minute to say she could be called if required. Watching Rohan learn about the role of the midwife and their procedures (which they expect him to follow) was lots of fun. The scenes in the hospital were some of my favourites in the whole book.

I really enjoyed the character of Ally – she was smart and funny and capable. She had a few clear issues stemming from the way she’d been raised. Her father had lavished all his attention on her brother, believing him to be the one capable of growing up and having a fantastic career, consigning Ally to probably being a mother and wife. His death and that of her brother meant that Ally’s mother then had to learn to support the family and gave Ally the driving desire to have a career and be successful. I liked the way that she wasn’t afraid to serve it up to Rohan either when he was being a bit of a jerk (which was actually kind of often). I wish I liked Rohan as much as I liked Allie. His whole character was a bit of a contradiction. Sometimes he was funny and sweet and enjoyable but far too many times he was really too pushy and arrogant for my liking and he made me roll my eyes! I really don’t like the attitude that some men have in regards to women who don’t want to have casual sex. Just because the attraction is there, doesn’t mean it has to be acted upon if it goes against their ideas and beliefs. Rohan kept calling Ally repressed which grated on my nerves a bit. Not everyone wants to have sex if not in a relationship and they shouldn’t be demeaned or condescended to because of it. I feel as though Ally could’ve been firmer with Rohan at times instead of making a half-hearted attempt and then just forgetting about it as soon as he kissed her. The only thing that kind of redeemed this for me was how desperate Rohan was at the end.

Dr No Commitment is a quick read, very sweet in its approach to the relationship that is building between the two housemates.

I enjoyed the whole slowly-does-it development of Ally and Rohan’s romance. With this being a novella, I was a little worried about whether this would work, but happily it worked very well.

There were a few things that didn’t quite work quite as well for me. Now this story is set in Adelaide. Not a tiny place by any means (there are over 1 million people there), but I would hazard a guess that if you are from a prominent family in that city and you are frequently featured in the media, there would be a fair chance that everyone would know who you are. Rohan is from a big name family and seems to be all over the papers, but somehow Ally has no idea who he is. Maybe at first, this would have been the case. But with all of the signs about, I find it a little hard to believe that she still had no idea who he was.

While not a book I would rush back to reading, it was a nice, light read.

didn-t-finish
January 7, 2014
So close, but I just couldn't finish it.

From the blurb: "A mischievous romantic comedy, about a man who’s always run from love and the girl who just might catch him." Nothing about that sentence seemed to be true. On the contrary, it was the other way around. Rohan, one of Ally's new roommates in a house she absolutely loves, seems to be after her from the start. She, on the other hand, was firmly set against any kind of romantic connection with someone in her house. Though she was attracted to him, he was the persistent one in pursuing her.

While I can't fault a book for it's blurb copy (I know the authors really don't control that) the writing itself was choppy and awkward. Scenes felt abrupt to me and some of the dialogue and backstory seemed odd.

Rohan had some kind of secret that he was keeping from Ally, or that she was just oblivious to, but I couldn't connect with either of these characters enough to care.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This non-memorable medical romance would make a good rainy day read. Something light and fluffy to curl up with when the rest of the day is feeling pretty grey.

There wasn't a lot going on in terms of conflict between Rohan and Ally - just a need for better communication. Still, it was a sweet little romance, easy to read, easy to forget.

I really liked the idea of the story, but I couldn’t really get into the book. I loved Ally and Rohan was definitely swoon worthy at times and his cousins were a good addition to the story. Although parts of the story were interesting (like Ally and Rohan’s witty banter), I just lost in parts of the story. It seemed the timeline was super fast and there were characters that came and left. Besides that it was a very cute story.
