This was a bit different from TJ's Steele Street series. The pace was not as fast and the language was not as crude but I still enjoyed it.

Dylan was an undercover FBI agent posing as a private bodyguard to Austin the bad guy. And he was secretly lusting after Johanna, Austin's lawyer since the first day. I loved the sexual tension between these two at the office. Absolutely hot, when they can look only and not touch.

Dylan was the ultimate Alpha here. He was an FBI agent, a bodyguard and a heroine kidnapper all rolled up in a brooding package. I enjoyed him very much, and the book too.

This was different than this author's single titles. The hero kidnaps the heroine at the beginning for her own good of course since she knows a little too much about her ex boss. He is pretty alpha, injured, tired after being undercover for the FBI for 4 years and has been out of touch with his superiors. The heroine doesn't believe it that he is FBI or even that he is saving her. I can't point out why I wasn't wow'ed by this book but it was just not like her newer works.

3.75 Stars Romantic Suspense

Winner of 1993 Rita Award for Short Contemporary, Avenging Angel by Glenna McReynolds aka Tara Janzen tells the story of an undercover law enforcement hero who is hellbent on reaching the woman he loves, to save her from the clutches of a man who wants nothing else except her death certificate in his hands. Though the cover is ridiculous, the story inside is a good one with a brooding hero who has a tender core deep inside and a spunky heroine who gives as good as she gets in the run for their lives that is the basis of this novel.

Dylan Jones is a man who has been working undercover for far too long. His life is and the real man inside of him is buried under a ton of lies and fabricated history that Dylan is almost weary and at the point of giving up. Six months back, Dylan had culminated 4 years of undercover work by slipping into Austin Bridgeman's underground empire as a bodyguard whereupon he meets a bombshell package of brains, legs, virtue and sophistication that is Johanna Lane. Though it has always been Dylan's rule never to get involved with anyone related to his assignment, he can't help but be protective of the woman that he wants with every fiber of his being.

The daughter of the most renowned trial lawyer in the state of Illinois, Johanna follows in her father's footsteps and is an attorney herself who works for Austin as his most private legal counsel. She had left Chicago and her job 4 months back because of what Austin had become in the past couple of years. Privy to information that no one else knows, this is what lands Johanna in danger and it is an injured Dylan that races through thousands of miles to abduct Johanna in order to save her.

It is an enraged Johanna that finds herself a captive of the sexy avenging angel who outsmarts a pack of men who look like they mean business when they storm her apartment. But trust doesn't come easily and at first Johanna would love nothing more than to escape the clutches of the man who holds her captive even though it may be for her safety. But when Johanna discovers who Dylan truly is, a man she has a shared past with and a man she had desired in spite of every cell in her brain screaming for her not to, Johanna at long last gives in as she starts to fall for the man that she has dreamed about for far too long.

Avenging Angel is short novel, but still manages to pack into it a pretty decent story though there were a couple of things I would have loved to know more about. At the beginning of the story there is a mention of how Dylan had failed the previous 2 times he had broken cover to come to someone's rescue. But there is no detail of any of it later in the story which would have served to make Dylan's character a bit more interesting. Though I thought that Johanna would end up annoying the crap out of me, she later turned out to be a pretty good heroine who adamantly refuses to leave Dylan to the wolves when push comes to shove. Dylan makes for a dreamy hero with his tenderness that comes out to play around Johanna and the scenes of passion between the two are pretty well done. Now I am mighty curious to read the Crazy series by Tara Janzen because I know that she can write a mean romantic suspense if she puts her mind to it. Recommended for fans of short contemporary romantic suspense.

Favorite Quotes:

The mercury had pushed ninety-two that day, but he was wearing an overcoat, a lined overcoat stained with dirt … or blood. A torn black T-shirt molded his torso, soft black jeans clung to his hips and legs.
He was bruised on one side of his face and cut on the other. He was muscular and lean, hard, stripped down to the basics of strength, He was feral.

Dark eyes opened to the barest slit, his gaze fixed on her mouth, unwavering. He looked like he wanted to eat her for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, then start all over again. She felt the heat of his excitement running through his body. His skin was warm, nearly hot to the touch. His breath was uneven, his body pressed against hers in the most carnal of ways.
Her anger, so righteous only seconds before, was having an unbelievably difficult time not getting scorched to cinders by his slow, intense perusal.

Her need for him, to be a part of him, went beyond her power to reason. There was no reason to want him as badly as she did.
She did want him, though, with all her heart. She wanted to soothe him and cherish him. She wanted to kiss him with all the tenderness he was showering on her. She wanted to give him pleasure in being alive.

You can find this review in English below.

Pues me ha resultado un poco difícil de creer esta historia, oiga. Toda esa atracción a primera vista, esa conexión instantánea ¿y después no se acuerda de él? ¿Qué me estás contando?

***

So, I have found this story hard to believe. All that attraction at first sight, that immediate connection and then she doesn´t remember him? What are you telling me?
And well, then there is the premise that it´s hard nut to crack (too) and the oh-so-convenient Johanna´s naiveté. So much for being a clever lawyer…

But at the end it worked well enough. Because it was entertaining (just what I was looking for). Nothing to write home about but fine for a summer read. Or so I think…

Avenging Angel was a good, fast read. It's a good book to pick up when you have a couple hours to kill. The premise is an undercover FBI agent breaks cover to protect an innocent woman he met during the course of his undercover assignment.
If we could give 1/2 stars, I would have given this one a 3 1/2...but since it has to be whole stars, it deserved more than 3...
The overall story was good, for the most part, the characters were likeable and the story flowed well enough. There are a couple of things that brought the rating down. First, there are a couple of times that the shift between who's thoughts are being shared aren't clear. In a couple of spots it was bad enough to pull you out of the story trying to figure out what is going on.
Another thing was the fact that Johanna, the leading lady, went from hatred and thoughts of revenge, to forgiving and willingly working with Dylan without any new information to help change her mind...she just seems to change it after having time to think the situation over.
The story line is okay, the characters are good, the plot moves along nicely, even though a face off with the main 'bad guy' would have been nice. Austin, the crux of the problem is only mentioned here and there in the story, he actually never makes an appearance.
Like I said, a good book for a quick read. I really liked Dylan and would have liked to have continued reading about him...

I was surprised to see that this book was written 19 years ago. At that time, if I remember correctly, romance plots were a not as intricate or as fast-paced as this one.

I liked the hero and could have slapped the heroine a few times, but she came good in the end. I don't want to give a spoiler and ruin the story for anyone, however I will say that the twist toward the end was a cliche. I was a little disconcerted when the heroine kept jumping into pay phones and then remembered that of course in 1993, people just didn't have mobile (cell) phones the way they do now!

I like Tara Jantzen's work and will read more in due course.

Enjoyable romantic suspense.

Hero takes heroine to protect her from her former boss who is intent on killing her. Hero is wounded but manages to drag her cross country, avoiding killers around every corner, and saves the day.

I haven't read Janzen, but liked this novel enough to look up more by the author.

Remember the "Lawyer Daggett" from "True Grit"? It was in that vein that the heroine kept referring to her law firm partner. That part was.... weird.

IMO: Why can't these 'injured heroes on the lam' figure out that they can get penicillin from any animal feed or pet store? Just saying.

I chose to read this book as it had the most votes from my Kindle Shelf post. I did end up liking this book. It’s not a very long book and in the beginning the pace was consistent. There was a lot of set up and not too much happening. I was worried about when the action was going to happen. No worries, there is plenty of action.

Johanna and Dylan are the main characters. Dylan kidnaps Johanna and she knows he is familiar. It’s great once she figures out where she knows him from. Realizing that she knows him previously, this common bond has its ups and downs on the story and their relationship.

My favorite part of the book is when Johanna finds out exactly why Dylan kidnapped her and she realizes the situation they are in. My least favorite part of the book is the set up in the beginning. Get through the first ½ nearly ¾ of the book and then hold on for the last ¼ of the book. It is worth the wait.

I believe I got this book when it on a free promo day, but I'm not sure.

This was one of those books that pulled you in from the start and kept your interest and your mind trying to move one step ahead to see if you could figure out where the author was going. Tara Janzen did a very good job of keeping you guessing.

A quick easy read that had good romance and some good suspense. I liked how you just couldn't be sure what Dylan really was, an FBI agent for sure or was he someone who had gone rogue earlier. The conversations were fun and the romance felt real.

The writing flowed nicely and was not choppy. There was depth and description that seemed just enough for the intent of the book. This was my first time reading this author, and I will be sure to pick up some of her other books.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was so emotionally charged that at times I was left breathless. The action was really good as well. I loved Dylan and Johanna as a couple. I connected with Johanna specifically and really felt what she felt. Very engaging story. I had a few issues though that did lower my love for this book.

For one, I never truly grasped the reasoning behind the danger. Maybe I missed that part? But I never knew why her life was on the line in the first place. The other issues are not as big a deal but still notable. All the typos and the fact Dylan buys 3 boxes of condoms and they never use any. For supposedly smart people, that's pretty dumb… Anyway, I really liked the book and I happily add it to my "Keeper shelf". I recommend to fans of romantic suspense.

Avenging Angel was a solid read but not as engaging as some of Janzen's other works. Dylan, the hero, takes Johanna, the heroine on the run with him to save her life. The story was fast-paced and I zipped through the book. I enjoyed the characters, especially Dylan. My biggest issue was that the twist at the end of the book seemed to come out of nowhere. Though I enjoy a little suprise, I like to be able to go back in the story and connect the dots. I couldn't quite do that here.

Loved this one - one of the best on-the-run romantic suspense I have read. More romance than suspense I guess, but it totally worked for me. A minor flaw was that the twist at the end was not fully explained, but I could live with that because the relationship between Johanna and Dylan was very touching and because Dylan was such a sweetheart.

Other flaw is the absolutely hideous cover!

Avenging Angel by Tara Janzen kindle version

I thought this was a very good read that I gave it 4 stars!

It was action packed with a little romance. I loved the ending. I definetly recommend you read this book. It isn't a chic lit but it isn't a guy only book. Either sexes would enjoy this book!

A decent kindle freebie, milder language-wize then Janzen's Steel Street and since in that series she normal does a full romance and the start of another in one book, this short works pretty well on doing a full romance in the shorter novella lenghth.

It's okay, not to bad and not great. Another girl who get's kidnapped and falls for her KIDNAPPER. If only authors would make another story because this kidnapping thing and falling for the KIDNAPPER is geting old. Make the kidnapper fight back or something "geees", shoot me someone.

This was ok but it left me feeling unsatisfied for some reason. I'm not marking it down to 2 stars but it doesn't feel like a full '3' to me (it's just not quite enough to go down to a 2). I'm suspecting it felt a bit 'unfleshed' to me. Irregardless, I think I won't be revisiting this in a hurry

A very good book with lots of tension and suspense. I enjoyed the little "flashbacks" that occurred in the beginning of the story to set up their history because the story just jumps right into the present with both feet.

Written well, however I was sick of both of them pining for each other throughout the whole story. It was so twilight. Not that that is a bad thing, but I've read too many books following the twilight path and I was looking for something different.

I like Tara Janzen's books but this was clearly one of her early efforts. The story was a little slow in places and lacked the intriuge from her Crazy series. Still, it was an okay read.
