5 ‘made me cry, made me sigh, made me believe that with love, anything is possible’ stars!

Back to You is the third book in Jessica Scott’s Coming Home series. It follows the story of Trent and Laura and the slow disintegration of their marriage due to Trent’s love affair with his other wife, the Army. I was dreading this story with as much passion as I was needing it. Dreading it because of the allegations against Trent, and desperately needing it because, deep down, I knew those allegations couldn't be true, and I needed to see it play out. And play out, right before our eyes, it did.

Description…
He's in for the fight of his life . . .

Army captain Trent Davila loved his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful children. But when he almost lost his life in combat, something inside him died. He couldn't explain the emptiness he felt or bridge the growing distance between him and his family—so he deployed again. And again. And again . . . until his marriage reached its breaking point. Now, with everything on the line, Trent has one last chance to prove to his wife that he can be the man she needs . . . if she'll have him

. . . to win back his only love.

Laura is blindsided when Trent returns home. Time and again, he chose his men over his family, and she's just beginning to put the pieces of her shattered heart back together. But when Trent faces a court martial on false charges, only Laura can save him. What begins as an act of kindness to protect his career inflames a desire she thought long buried—and a love that won't be denied. But can she trust that this time he's back to stay?
My review…

I have to tell you, this is one of the best 'one more chance' and military romances I’ve ever read. It gutted me at the same time it uplifted me. It broke my heart while making me fall in love. Start to finish I was completely invested in Trent and Laura’s happiness, cheering them on one minute and crying for them the next. Ms. Scott did a brilliant job of showing us a different side to the casualties of war – the slow, painful, emotional death of a military family. But the real beauty of this story is watching these two amazing people refuse to give up on each other, or themselves, and work to put their family back together again. Their happily ever after was hard fought and well deserved!

The bottom line…

Don’t waste time reading reviews of these books, just buy the books and enjoy the time you spend reading them! Seriously, just do it. But I strongly recommend they be read in order so you know exactly what has taken place, and why Back to You is such a beautiful love story!

My thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishers) and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this amazing story in exchange for an honest review.

Captain Trent Davila has a beautiful wife, two children, and a thriving career in the military. After he was wounded on a mission and almost died, he lost a piece of himself, thinking he didn’t deserve to live, which makes him feel lost and unable to cope with life. Now he’s back in the U.S. after being fired and court martialed for crimes he didn’t commit. To make matters worse, his wife has filed for divorce. Trent’s constant need to be in command and to make sure his boys are safe is what drove him to volunteer for deployment after deployment over the course of ten years. It’s also his way of coping with the stress of the war. Because of this, he made a lot of poor decisions when it came to his wife and family, leaving them behind, and shattering his wife’s heart over and over.

“I can’t give you what you want anymore, Trent.” Her gaze didn’t waiver from his. “Because I don’t have anything left. You broke me.” she whispered. “You finally broke me.” - Laura

Laura Davila has supported Trent’s military career for years, being the good military wife as she stayed home and raised the children. But when he almost died, he became more and more distant and cold, and the connection they used to have begins to fizzle out. Laura loves Trent but every time he leaves, he takes a piece of her heart. And for years, she’s been lonely and heart broken, missing Trent. Unable to deal with the distance anymore, she decides it’s time to let Trent go and move on with her life so she can mend her broken heart. Hearing about Trent’s court martial, she agrees to help Trent by pretending they are a happy couple, but with the stipulation he must sign the divorce papers. However, Trent has no plans of signing the papers. He’s determined to get his family back.

“A better man would walk away. Would release her from the purgatory of their sham of a marriage. But Trent wasn’t a better man.” - Trent

The more time Trent and Laura spend together, the more things start to heat up between them and Laura begins to realize her attraction and love for Trent never truly fizzled out, it just laid dormant. She loves him just as much as she did when she first met him. Though, before she gives this marriage another chance, she must make sure that Trent can truly stand by his word to be there for her and the kids. He must deal with his anxiety and mental exhaustion. He must learn to let Laura in when things become difficult for him. And he must learn how to deal with his children and become the father they’ve never had.

This story is told from both Laura and Trent’s POV and both of them tugged at my heart strings as I got to know them on a personal level. Laura is a strong mother with a patient and loving heart. She’s always been the rock in the family. And Trent, our beautifully broken hero, lost himself for a while but refused to give up on his family. I loved reading about this bad ass soldier who is deeply flawed and vulnerable underneath the tough façade. And I loved reading how Trent reestablishes his connection with his kids.

I knew this story would be a heart-breaker when my eyes immediately began to blur the moment I started reading. It was obvious how much Trent and Laura loved each other. But there was so much distance and unspoken words between them that they had to find a way to communicate what they’re feeling and figure out how to get back the intense, deep connection they once had. They both had to take some really big steps and overcome the obstacles to save their marriage and rediscover the immense love they’ve always felt for each other. And when these two would make love it was beautiful, as they fell back in love over and over again through smoldering touches and fiery kisses.

Jessica Scott gave this married couple such realistic marital problems that I knew by the last page she had poured her heart into this story. I have much love for Back to You. I was blown away by all of the emotion and beauty in the words. This heartfelt story gutted me emotionally, yet all the pain and tears were well worth it as Jessica Scott took me on a memorable journey. This is my first book by Jessica Scott and definitely will not be my last. I’m going to go back to read the first two books in this series after meeting the other couples in this story. They were a lot of fun. This story can be read as a stand-alone.

Back To You is the second book in the series and the first book and novella built up the conflict that we see arise in this story here. I was so intrigued as I always love a marriage in trouble type of story and in this one we see a big marriage in trouble and the realism of this felt so emotional and raw at times. My heart ached for both the hero and heroine as you can see how much they love each other but are also hurt and damaged in different ways. Seeing them learn to reconnect with each other was so endearing. Our hero has been withdrawn from his family and has been focusing on his deployments as facing up to the home life is easier to ignore if he is away. But our heroine, Laura is done being put second when she learns her husband volunteered for the last four deployments, that he would choose to be away from them especially when she came so close to losing him. But now its a year later since she delivered the divorce papers and he still can't sign them. When a traitor in his platoon has framed him for theft of military property, he needs Laura by his side, but more than that he wants to repair the damage he has caused and return to the man he was.

We see journey in the growth of these characters as they work past the hurts and disappointments and try to find their way together. Seeing our hero reconnect with his wife and children was so precious and heartfelt. You can see how he is learning to face up to what the war has done to him and such healthy representation of this depression and psychological damage he is working to overcome and what a professional psychologist can do to help. I absolutely was won over by these characters and in their earnest to work through the challenges and become the couple that they were meant to be. This book was beyond beautiful and I adored seeing their journey!

I've been anxiously awaiting this story since I read the first book in the series. Trent fascinated and frustrated me in the previous books and I wanted to explore the mystery of him.

While this is a romance about a husband and wife falling in love with each other again, it's also a hard-to-put-down look at the troubles our military heroes face when coming home from war. Scott did an excellent job of balancing the romance with the realities. It was hard to read at times, and I straight bawled at one point, but I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Since the beginning of this series, I've watched the slow disintegration of Trent and Laura's marriage. What's made it even sadder is they're both really good people. He's admired by the troops under his command and she's a vital part of the support infrastructure for the families waiting for their loved ones to return home from deployment.

I couldn't understand why Trent kept volunteering for deployment and distancing himself from his wife and family. This book not only answered that question but gave me insight into the travesties of war that I'd never considered. I'm the daughter of an Army NCO who served in Vietnam and now have a deeper understanding of what was really going on with him.

Trent's journey back to Laura was so very special. He wanted desperately to come home to her emotionally, spiritually and physically. Despite her deep hurt from him essentially abandoning her, Laura wanted the same thing too. I loved how authentic their story seemed, requiring the support of friends and co-workers and managing through the setbacks.

I loved this story. It's not just a sensitively portrayed romance but a tribute to those men and women serving our country in extraordinary ways and the courage it takes for their families to support them. Really well done.

**5/2019 Edit to add safety details**

I'm not sure how to rate this one. It is very well written and the author does a fantastic job showing us what it's like to be in the military and what it's like for the families they leave behind. This was a nicely angsty story with a truly remorseful H. Watching Trent and Laura slowly heal their marriage was so romantic. But I felt like there was too much time spent in the character's heads and they just repeated the same stuff again and again. The pacing slowed down and I started to get bored.

Overall, I really liked having a look into a way of life I'm not familiar with and I loved that they got their HEA.

This book was a difficult one to read because though what Trent did to his wife Laura and kids makes you want to hate him, yet you cannot because he feels all of that himself and more. A near death experience changed him, pulling him between his family and his men, so rather than dealing with his family he deploys over and over, pulling away from his wife and then his career implodes with accusations of impropriety and wrong-doing. He then decides to win back his family if he cannot salvage his career and he stumbles and Laura isn't sure she is ready to get her heart-broken again, she was patient, she waited for her husband to come back, but he never did and the silence hurt especially when rumours about her husband began to fly. I loved seeing these two slowly find their way back to each other and the best part was that we weren't given an instant solution and even when the book ends they are healing, finding the new them.

WOW!! Just WOW! What an absolutely perfect Valentine's Day read. I loved everything about this book. Truly, just everything.

Jessica Scott takes us to a place few can -- into the mind of the returning warrior. She creates these tough, but very fragile characters better than most anyone else I've read. I've forgotten how much I like her; just how good she is. This was a perfect book.

What did I like [a bit more detail versus just everything]:
1 -- Trent and Laura. Trent is home. He's home not because he really wants to be, but because he was "fired". He is being court-marshalled and in the process Laura has found him out. She now knows that most of his deployments were volunteer and not the mandatory he told her. She doesn't understand what drives him. What fear takes him away from her and their kids time after time. Laura loves Trent with an absolute love. She doesn't understand why he lied to her. Why he doesn't want her and the kids like he seems to want / need the war. She wants a divorce.

This is the story of how a love, damaged beyond repair, begins anew. How these two find their way, slowly, back to each other. Because they really can't do anything else. He can't survive without her, and she can't imagine life without him .. forever. Perfection.

2 -- The war is portrayed in this story as the beast it is. I liked how Trent came home with war related issues, but not diagnosed as PTSD [because we read so many stories about this and it isn't appropriate all the time -- there is so much more to know]. It is simply a case of getting his normal back. It isn't simple to do and he is told to seek some professional help. He's an officer, so more apprehensive than the "normal" soldier, but his family is worth it. Can it help him? He knew immediately it would -- or hoped so. He began to feel a calm after talking to his doctor. This is important. I wonder how many soldiers fail to get the help needed and lose more than they can bear. This is wonderfully told for us. Jessica Scott holds no punches.

3 -- The friendships wrought through war. We hear about how hardship breeds a closeness like no other. Imagine putting your life in another person's hands? In their keeping and theirs in yours. You see glimpses of this here. It is amazing to watch how these tough guys interact. They seem to know intuitively how to deal with each other. Laura .. wondering why things can't be as easy with her and Trent as the ease he finds with his friends. Wanting this closeness for herself but not able to deny his closeness with others. How hard would that be? She paints this for us too.

4 -- The cover is perfect. The title -- nothing else would do.

5 -- All this to say, this authors voice is amazing. She says in the dedication that she has been working on this one since 2009. This was a difficult story to tell. You can tell she has "some skin" in this one. It holds parts of herself -- open and bare. Out there for us to enjoy, reflect on and judge. Something she was driven to do. A story she was destined to tell.

What didn't I like about this book? Nothing. I can't think of any one thing I think could be better that I'm willing to comment on. The courage to write a story like this. In the right hands, it can make a difference. It makes you look at our returning warriors differently. To expect them to get out of a Humvee one day in Afghanistan and be sitting calmly on a little league baseball field In Oklahoma the next with no repercussions to them? Definitely too much to expect them to shift their normal that quickly. I hope this book falls into the right hands and it helps them be more understanding and patient. These soldiers are worth our effort. And, if a soldier reads this? I hope they realize they owe it to themselves to do whatever it takes to get back their normal. They are worth it. We'll be waiting for them.

Happy Reading!

Back to you was a simply stunning read and clearly showed just how strong love in war can be. The author dug deep into the psyche of both main characters Trent and Laura, showing each one's emotions as they go from being a close and happy couple to just barely dealing with each deployment separation.

I honestly could not get enough of Trent and how is so very lost but still keeps fighting to try and get his life back on track.

I laughed and I cried so many times in this read, it was truly an emotional rollercoaster ride. From being separated to joined together by the power of an undying love these characters took me on one of the most beautiful reading journeys of my life.

The author has a brilliant way of taking an everyday story and weaving it into a tale so overwhelmingly strong it not only stays with you for a long time but is also shows readers the other side of the war life.

I recommend this read for all fans of Jessica Scott reads !

Knowing something was going to be a tough read, but still wanting desperately to read it is how I have felt about this story since I read the first book in the series. 'Because of You' ended with a side story that was just begging to be told and finally we get that story here. So worth it, but no lie, it will twist you up inside before it gets better.

Captain Trent Davila has hit the very lowest his life can go and it is while he is down there looking around him at the shattered pieces of his life that he resolves to do something about it. Trent was injured to the point of nearly losing his life and never really recovered mentally from that before he was back to combat duty. From then on, he just kept stuffing feelings of any sort down deep to the point where he felt hollow and empty inside toward anything, but the call of war. He couldn't understand what was happening and it terrified him, but he certainly didn't want his wife to see him as the cold, broken man he was and he certainly didn't feel deserving of still having his family when so many others lost their lives under his leadership so he kept volunteering for duty assignments and stayed away from home hoping she would still be there for him. After all those tours of duty, he is left with a wife who wants a divorce because he broke her, a pending court martial for things of which he wasn't guilty and that continuing sick, empty feeling that consumes him. Now that he's about to lose it all, he is finally able to see what he can't live without and he's going to do whatever it takes to get it back. He's going home to his wife and family.

Laura Davila gave her all as an army wife in support of her husband until there was nothing left to give. She finally broke when she discovered that more than just withdrawing from her and acting like a stranger that he had lied to her about his duty assignments being mandatory and then he shut off all communication. Divorce was not what she wanted and it crushed her heart, but she couldn't continue to live like that. Her love was not enough and that hurt worse because asking for divorce didn't stop her heart from wanting. Now Trent is back and she senses something is different, but dare she hope? There will be no coming back if he fails this time and its not just her who will be injured if Trent can't figure out how to become a part of their family again and give up his need to always stay apart and leave- his son and daughter would be crushed right along with her. Can she really take such a chance again?

Trent is terrified, but he is determined. In the midst of readying for his court case, helping Shane get ready for his wedding, and dealing with his combat fatigue and issues, he tentatively reaches out to his wife and kids. He goes back to his own home as a stranger even while the demons that drove him away roar loudly in his ears to flee. He knows what he has to do and hopes there is enough left to do it.

As I said, this book was one of my most anticipated reads. I was nervous to read it in case it was a let down because I knew I was aiming high. Gotta tell you though, it delivered. I was tense and felt every emotion for this poor tortured couple, but it was all good. It was like really appreciating the light because I'd been in darkness so long. I'm glad that both of them narrated this story so that their thoughts and motivations were evident to me. Every action, thought and word struck true so no matter how slow this broken relationship moved forward, I was content to let it all unfold at its own pace. Baby steps were the only thing that made sense in this situation. And the passion between these two? It is always smoldering, but whoosh it would kindle to a blaze and it was just really something. Their second chance affair is so beautiful and unique in that it is conducted within the realm of already being a married pair with two ordinary children and their pets. I absolutely melted when Trent and Laura engaged with their children especially Trent's early efforts to connect with his home and his own children. And each time he turned to Laura instead of hiding from her just letting her see deep into his tired, hurting soul? I was as swoony as Laura over her brave husband.

There is more than just Trent and Laura's relationship going on in this book, but that was the focal point. There is the court martial situation that was so tragic in and of itself. I hated that Lieutenant who set Trent up so much by the time all was said and done that a life sentence of hard labor at Leavenworth (doubt that is still a punishment nowadays) would probably not satisfy my need for vengeance. His selfishness, greed and hatred touched so many particularly Trent and Laura.
There was the ongoing story of Shane and Jen with their wedding plans and his pending return to full duty. He is such a romantic hero the way he tenderly cares for her and wants this wedding to be perfect because this time his wedding is to the woman he loves more than life. Shane and Jen are also still dealing with their differing views of starting a family together.
On a side note, I liked the follow-up with Carponti and Nicole to see how he continues to adjust to his amputation. Carponti is the one who does what he does best. His wisecracks and over the top remarks help lighten things up when it gets too thick with emotion. He totally grounds Trent and Shane so they can deal better.

Now that I have gotten the story that I most anticipated, I am more than satisfied. Glutton that I am, I am not ready to be done with this series or its characters so I was glad to see that Reza Iaconelli is to get his story next.

I can't recommend this series enough to those who love strong, gritty and most of all authentic military romance, but most definitely read it in order when you pick it up.

My thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to review this story in exchange for my honest review thoughts.

Favorite Quote: “I was always coming back to you. It just took me awhile to get here.“

Army Captain Trent Davila thought he had it all. A beautiful wife, two wonderful children, and a fulfilling career in the military. When he is wounded in combat and almost dies, Trent finds pieces of himself missing. Unable to explain the dark thoughts and the emptiness he feels, he pushes away his wife and family, volunteering to deploy over and over again. It’s during his last deployment that Trent receives divorce papers and learns that his wife has had enough. Now facing a court martial for dereliction of duty, Trent has come home to try and repair the damage to his career and his family.

Laura Davila loves her husband and for the most part has been the perfect military wife, keeping the home fires burning while her husband left her to fight the good fight. But after his near fatality and finding out he volunteered repeatedly to leave her and kids, she can no longer live with the loneliness and heartache. She files for divorce, hoping that she can get on with her life without her other half. When she learns of the court martial, she agrees to portray the loving wife one last time to help Trent but only if he signs the papers and lets her go.

As Trent and Laura spend time together, Laura realizes that her love for Trent never died but she needs more than declarations. Trent will have to prove to her that she and their kids come first this time, or he will lose them for good.

I have waited a long time for Trent and Laura’s story. Throughout the series, Ms. Scott has given us clues hinting at the forces behind this couples downfall. Emotional and heartbreaking, we, like Laura, have been wondering what has caused Trent to shut his family out time and time again. Back To You finally gives us the whole story and what a story it is. We were all able to see that Trent was hiding something but the sheer magnitude of the secrets is overwhelming. Suffering from PTSD and survivors guilt, Trent is functioning on nothing more than a whisper and a prayer. Between Trent and Laura’s POVs, we learn exactly what both are feeling, how they came to this point, and the lengths they are willing to go through to try and repair their marriage.

A better man would walk away. Would release her from the purgatory of their sham of a marriage. But Trent wasn’t a better man.

Scott slowly and expertly reveals and dissects the deep pain Trent has been carrying for years; brought to a head by his near death experience. He is lost. Normality no longer has any meaning for him. All the death he has seen has led him to question his service to the military; especially when he learns of the reasons behind his court martial. Scott’s military experience shows in how she chooses to address Trent’s problems. On the whole, the public cheers the commitment these courageous men and women give to their country but forget that for them, coming home isn’t always a happy situation. They don’t automatically forget the horror they have seen once they set foot on home soil and I think sometimes that is what we expect of them. To basically “shake it off” and continue on with their lives. Scott shows us through Trent this isn’t always realistically possible.

“…Life back in the rear was too complicated, too loud, too chaotic. War was simpler.”

Laura is realistically portrayed as the grieving wife. She grieves the loss of the man she married and of her marriage. Her pain transcends the pages and I like that her feelings aren’t pushed aside or made to seem less important than Trent’s. We are intimately acquainted with what the spouses of deployed military members deal with daily. They take care of everything. The home, the kids, the repairs, the bills, ect…It’s tiring, time consuming, and at times thankless. Her reasons for divorce are valid and Scott gives them the necessary respect they deserve.

“I’m so tired of crying over you”

Passion and pain war together and make for a volatile mix. You never doubt Trent and Laura’s love for one another and their physical attraction is at a prime but I was still unsure if they could overcome this massive hurdle. Some beautiful and heartfelt love scenes add to the longing you feel as you watch these two broken people try to repair the damage done. *sniff*

“The fear came out of nowhere, stealing up from a dark place in his soul, raw and primal, ripping through him like a beast. Promising the loss of the thing he loved more than anything else in the world.”

The main conflict blends well with the second chance romance. Issues that were glossed over in previous books are addressed in full and resolve in an acceptable fashion. Friends of Trent and Laura make multiple appearances and help to facilitate the story lines, offering advice and laughter. I enjoyed seeing Shane & Jen, along with Nicole and Carponti. Their lives are going ahead and we see positive things for their futures.

Scott pours her heart into Back To You and it shows in every word we read. Trent and Laura’s story is at times hard to read but the journey is well worth the heartache. I look forward to reading All For You which releases February 4, 2014 from Forever.

My Review:
I'm always a bit leery about books like this. I spent twenty years as a military spouse and sometimes these books cut a little too close to home and those feelings and emotions from that time. This one was especially hard-hitting because it's about an established couple on the brink of divorce from the stresses from military life. I definitely had that jittery, slightly sick feeling to my stomach for the first 20% of this book that relates to that issue, but it was such a good book....it was worth that feeling at the beginning.

This book is about Laura and Trent. Trent has not been dealing with the stresses of war well, so his only coping mechanism is to volunteer to go back to war and not deal with the stress of it all especially the foreign-feeling home life that awaits when he gets home. With each deployment, it's gotten worse and finally Laura has reached her breaking point...when he's charged with sexual misconduct...and files for a divorce. Not only is Trent facing his own emotional issues, but he's also been fired as commander and is facing court-martial charges. Right now is not a happy time to be Trent. His only crime is mental exhaustion and not dealing with things that he should. The fact is...he loves his wife desperately, but feels disconnected from everything. And the thing is...Laura loves him too. She just respects herself too much to be hurt by him any more. She's calling it quits as her only self-defense.

This isn't an easy book. Both of these people are deeply hurt, but still in love. That doesn't change the fact though that things aren't working between them anymore. *gah* So much emotion. But Jessica Scott wrote an incredible book. Even when I was frustrated as a reader with one or both characters, I still could feel the empathy for how they were acting and reacting. You can tell that Jessica Scott knows what she's talking about. As both a military spouse and active duty soldier, she's lived this and seen it firsthand. That reality comes across the page. It also creates an incredibly realistic military environment within this fictional story.

The court-martial story line was one I don't think I would have been brave enough to tackle, but the author created it all perfectly. She captured the screwed-up politics within the military and how it plays into hirings/firings of good soldiers. Trent had his issues as a commander who are ultimately responsible for the actions of hundreds of men. It's a difficult position to be in and the reality of possible jail-time for not doing your job as well as you could is terrifying. There's a whole other level there of controversy that I won't get into, but it was nice to see this author brave enough to touch on it.

Overall, this was an amazingly good book. It was entertaining and in the end, full of romance and hope. I'm so glad I stuck through those opening pages when I was questioning whether or not I could read this book or not. I highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

We have seen this couple in bits and pieces as their relationship falls apart from the previous books. Now, their marriage has come to its very last string, and we finally get to get their full story.

Trent is a true patriot serving his country and supporting his brother in arms, but that had cost him his relationship with his wife and his family. He has been charged with missing equipment among other things and now awaiting trial. Now he has to face his failing marriage along with getting back into the real world. It is more traumatic than what he experienced, but he will duke it out. Can his wife Laura give him a second chance?

My heart just broke for Trent and Laura. You will see exactly what they are going through and understand that everything they feel is justified given the situation they are in. I was mortified at the fact that Trent came home and found a whole different world with a family he loved yet barely knew anymore. I made me sad seeing that his weakness and fear was to be near his family. He had no idea what to say or do around them. But I loved that Laura and the kids despite his absence still loved him. The kid’s reaction to his homecoming was just priceless.

Ms. Scot yet again tells a very realistic story about a patriot soldier and his wife. We will see what they have endured during and after his service for his country. I know I’ve said this before, but this author really tells the story as is. I know her books are a work of fiction, but I also know that these stories are close to real life events. I love most that Ms. Scott picked a story line that occurs in so many homes in this country. And the fact that she showed that broken hearts can be mended with a little bit of chance.

We never really know what happens to our soldiers unless you are directly associated with them. Back to You and the rest of the books in this series will let you experience what can happen in a militarily life.

I knew that when I finally got my hands on Trent and Laura's book I would spend the entire time blinking back tears and rubbing my aching heart. I was right. Back To You was extremely emotional and once again Jessica Scott took me on a roller coaster ride of raw emotions and real life. If you've read Scott before, none of this will be at all surprising.

“I'm so sorry I wasn't man enough for you to believe in,” he whispered.

Heart. Broke.

Trent is an amazing hero. He's not perfect, he has problems, and many demons from the war. But that just makes him that much more loveable. He seems very real (as any of Scott's characters do), rather than a paper cutout of a character. His commitment to Laura, his determination to save his relationship and be a dad to his kids was beyond touching. And his glasses? Sexy!

Laura's strength alone made her an extremely likeable heroine, and one that I was able to connect to. I hurt when she hurt, and ached to help Trent, too.

Scott proves her talent yet again, providing a captivating romance that is real and heartbreaking, but with a few scenes that make me crack a smile (Oh, Carponti!). Throw some great chemistry into the mix and you have the perfect book!

Every time…every…damn…time I read a book by Jessica Scott I’m reminded why I love her work so purestdelightawardand why I keep reading despite the book hangover I get and the amount of tears I shed until I’m dehydrated. As much as I’ve loved every book in this series, Back To You is my favorite even though I originally never really cared for the hero in this book. However, this author has a way of making her readers get inside the character’s head and understand the way they think and how they feel. She makes the reader face the cold hard facts of war, the problems within our military system, and the issues or men and women in uniform and their spouses face day in and day out. Yet she does this without being preachy, without being judgmental, and without showing any animosity towards our government. She simply makes you think, makes you aware, and most of all makes you understand how difficult war is on those who serve and those left behind to pick up the pieces.

I always felt Captain Trent Davila was standoffish and wasn’t completely present in any portion of his life. Like he was going through the motions because that’s what was expected of him. It really bothered me that he seemed detached from his wife and kids and while he supported his men with everything that he had, to me he even seemed somewhat dissociative with them as well. So, while I was surprised by the extent of his issues, I wasn’t surprised that he had them and while he didn’t have what most would term classic PTSD, he did have this just in a different form. The fact that he refused to share any of his problems with his wife of course just led to more issues of various degrees leading him to the point of refusing to sign the divorce papers she served him with months before.

For years Laura Davila stood by her soldier and supported him through everything good and bad. But with accusations against him mounting and his refusal to discuss anything with her she did what she felt was best for her and her two children and that was file for divorce. Months later, he hasn’t signed the papers and he’s back on post and because of his upcoming legal battle, back in their lives. She agrees to help him as long as once it’s over he’ll sign the papers and let them be free.
From the beginning of this book I knew it was going to be a tough one because we have two people who so obviously love on another but can’t seem to find the fight to stay together. Trent was so defeated and refused to ask for help from anyone including his wife. He was a complete mess inside and without anyone to confide in he just kept pulling away and pushing people out of his life. I felt so bad for him and his situation even though some of it was his own doing. Laura was such a strong female character and I admire her for everything she went through and how hard she tried to keep her marriage afloat. I don’t blame her for filing for the divorce or the choices she made when she had no support from her spouse. These were two very broken and sad people trying to survive the best they could under horrible conditions.

While this book was at times very hard to read, I also appreciated the fact that there was no easy way back for them. They both had to take very big steps and face some pretty insurmountable obstacles in order to save their marriage and rediscover the love they once shared. Add in two children who are scared and confused and a pending court martial and it’s understandable that they faced a very hard road.

This is not a book for the faint of heart; it deals with some very real tragedies and a marriage on the brink of divorce. It deals with characters that have demons that make other people’s demons seem like furry kittens. It will unnerve you and make you think a lot about what our service men and women deal with on a daily basis. However, Back To You will also remind you that sometimes trust in your partner is enough to make you want to see things through to the other side. It will restore your faith in the human spirit and it will absolutely make you a believer in the power of love.

From the beginning of this series I have been drawn to Trent and Laura's story and finally we get to find out what happens.

Poor Poor Trent. War has broken him and he so badly wants to be home but he is fighting so many personal demons.

"Yes, it is." His voice was urgent and harsh. "I can't fix what I've done. And I damn sure don't deserve your forgiveness." He lowered his forehead to hers, his palms warm and solid against her skin. "But I'm asking you to help me. Help me reset my normal. Help me learn how to be a dad again. A husband."

You ache for Laura and Trent with all their new found struggles.

"You came home. But you don't feel like you deserve it, do you?"

Trent tries to become the man, husband and father he wants to be. After Trent got shot he lost a part of himself and fighting and war was his 'safe zone'. After giving the army everything he has only to get nothing but bullshit in return. He realizes what he gave up for this sacrifice....his heart and his family.

"I'm half a man without you in my life," Trent said after a long moment. "I need you. I need to know you're out there in the world for me to come back to."

With the help of Laura, his new therapist, Carponti, Shane and his kids Trent works on his new 'normal.'

"I'm not the same man I was," he said gently. "I've got a lot of work to do to rewire my normal." She stroked her hands over his cheeks. "You're right. You are different. But you came back to me. That's all that matters."

Gah! This story broke my heart and at the same time rebuilt it. Laura and Trent's struggles felt real and heartfelt. I have not a hot clue first hand what war can do to a person but I think Jessica Scott has captured the essence of the aftereffects of war. So far each and every character from this series has a special place in my heart.

"I was always coming back to you. It just took me a while to get here."

I have been patiently waiting for Trent and Laura's story since the start of this series and I had my fingers crossed the whole time that the author would be able to pull it off in a satisfying way. Back to You turned out to be an impassioned story of two people that are clearly meant to be, finding their way back to each other through courage and heartache.

Captain Trent Davila has a promising career in the army and a beautiful family waiting for him at home. But it's a career that he throws himself into from past demons and guilt, and one that purposely removes him from a family that he no longer feels comfortable around. His wife, Laura, has waited for him to come home for years, and always thought that she was strong enough to continue that way for as long as Trent needed. But when truths are revealed and rumors swirl, she can no longer be there for a man who is now a stranger to her and their children.
When Trent is served with divorce papers and faced with a court martial, he returns home to not only clear his name but also repair his family. But he needs Laura's help in more ways then one. Can Trent convince her that he's back for good and that he wants to be there for his family? Or has he broken her trust beyond repair?

Jessica Scott has a talent for writing emotional roller-coasters that despite being fictitious are beyond real. Through Back to You, Scott takes readers on a journey of heartbreak and reconciliation through both Trent and Laura perspective. Their feelings, determination, despair, and most of all, love, radiate from the pages. Trent is a broken hero with many demons due to war, my heart broke for him many times while reading. We all understand the affects of war, but through Scott's expert writing we live it, and the aftermath of coming home from it which is not always as easy as some may think. Laura is a strong, and because of the situation she is in as a military spouse, independent heroine. While I felt sympathy for her circumstances, I also cheered her strength and courage. Readers receive an in-depth, balanced view of what each Laura and Trent are working through. One if not risen above the other, or seen as more in the right then the other. And what I loved most about Back to You was that the author didn't throw up any unnecessary road blocks between Trent and Laura just for the sake of conflict or shock value. She kept it true to her characters and story. One thing you never doubt through the story is the love and passion that Laura and Trent share regardless of their problems, sometimes it just takes the head a little longer to catch up to the heart.

Each character, secondary and main, had bottomless depth and dimension. Besides Trent and Laura's struggles, we also see the progression of Vic and Nicole's, and Shane and Jen's relationships. And they add well timed laughter and advice to the story. Scott clearly pours her heart and all of her military experience into this story of second chance romance, and I for one, am beyond satisfied with the outcome. Back to You is the first book of the year to make my 'Best of 2014' reading list and it is readily deserved. I look forward to more from this must-read military romance series!

This was a difficult book to read, but so well done I couldn’t put it down. I have trouble with stories where people are treated unfairly, where bad people do terrible things to good people and appear to get away with it. Even though I have faith in the author and I know that Ms. Scott will never disappoint me, it was still hard not to want to throw this one against the wall, not because it wasn’t a wonderful story (it is!) but because I was so frickin’ infuriated with an entitled lieutenant who was just awful, and kept getting away with it!

Of course, that made the end of the book even more satisfying because obviously, he didn’t get away with it forever, but I will admit I was beginning to wonder. This is the story of a good man married to a good woman—they love each other, they have two wonderful children, but Laura and Trent are practically strangers as he has been gone on one deployment after another for most of their marriage. When Laura learns that Trent has requested the extra overseas duty, she’s hurt and angry, that she’s been left to have their babies alone and raise their children alone. She’s kept things together for almost a decade, but she’s had it, especially knowing that the man she has loved for so long has made a conscious choice to be far away from his wife and children.

Trent is finally sent home, charged with criminal activity that just doesn’t fit with the man Laura knows her husband to be. Even so, she’s already filed for divorce, but Trent has refused to sign the papers. As hurt as she has been, Laura still loves him, but she feels she just can’t do it anymore.

But when they’re back together, there’s no denying the attraction that still exists, the love she feels for a man who has disappointed her over and over again. Can she really believe him when he says he wants to make it work? This story just broke my heart and put it back together all over again. The characters are wonderful, the romance a long, slow simmer that just keeps getting better, and I was really rooting for this couple to make it. That’s the thing with Jessica Scott’s stories—the characters are real people. They’re not perfect and their flaws could so easily be a deal-breaker, but the author makes them work beautifully.

I’m really enjoying reading my way through this series. I’ve read a few of the books out of order over the years, but I’m rereading all of them once again, which makes it much easier to enjoy the ongoing threads of other characters’ lives. I definitely recommend the Coming Home series to any reader who enjoys emotional, many-layered stories with what have got to be real people. They’re much too fully formed to be merely figments of the author’s imagination, and Back To You offers excellent examples. It’s just beautifully done.

My heart raced most of the book.

Trent knows he has made mistakes and it is costing him his family. He almost died while deployed, well technically he did die; and he couldn't cope with life at home so he volunteered to go back to war. Laura loves Trent with all her heart but why would the man she loves volunteer to return to war over and over and leave his family behind? He must not love them anymore, she can't understand but knows she must move forward so she files for divorce.

Trent was a character in Because of You that I barely noticed. He was important to the plot but I was not very vested in his character. I wasn't even sure if I would like a whole book with him as the main character. How wrong I was. There is so much more to Trent, he kept so many things from his wife and friends. I became enamored with his glasses and how they became a telling point in many scenes. I enjoyed his scenes with the children as much as the ones with his best friends Shane and Vic. By the end of the book I found myself hoping we would see more of Trent in other books of the series - and actually considering begging Jessica Scott for a novella about this great couple.

Laura is a great contemporary heroine. I enjoyed how she did not automatically jump back into Trent's arms; that she considered what they future would be like. Her tenderness with Trent was amazing and actually served to calm me during tense scenes in the book as well.

Jessica Scott writes from a unique point of view. She HAS the military experience from both sides. She has been deployed leaving family behind, and she has been home when her husband has been deployed. I think this gives her books an edge, a sort of realism I haven't read in any other book. Her books are wonderful stories, they are romances, but not all roses, flowers and champagne. They have gritty feelings, angst, realistic dialogue and complex situations that need more than a page to resolve.

While this book could serve fine as a stand alone book; I think it is best enjoyed if you read Because Of You and Anything For You first. Block off some time when you get this book; I myself could not put it down - I couldn't sleep so I just got up and finished it with only 3 hours sleep! You will laugh (come on Vic is in this book!), you will cry (some of those happy tears) and your heart will ache. It is that good!

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley for my honest review - however I will be purchasing my own copy when it releases.

I'm a huge fan of Jessica Scott and was super excited to get an early copy of Back to You for review thanks to the publisher through NetGalley.

I've wanted Trent and Laura's story since I first read Shane and Jen's book. I knew there was more to what was going on with Trent and couldn't wait to find out the truth. I'm going to say up front, you need to have tissues handy while reading this book.

Back to You was a very emotional read for me. I love a book that pulls me in completely, and Trent and Laura's story did from the very beginning. I could feel how hurt Laura was by Trent's repetitive deployments, especially once she found out he was volunteering. I think I was almost as angry as Laura was at him at one point. I have to say I loved when Trent started talking to a counselor and he could finally understand why he felt the need to continue to volunteer. I bawled like a baby when he explained to Laura his reason.

I also loved that it seemed very real and not sugar-coated at all that Trent would have trouble stepping back in and being a father to his kids. I knew in my heart he loved the kids every bit as much as he loved Laura. I felt so bad for Trent when he yelled at his kids because he couldn't handle the craziness, and it broke my heart to see how scared he was that the kids might not forgive him for his lapse.

The chemistry between Laura and Trent was there even when they were in the process of getting divorced. I loved that they both still loved one another so much and Laura was even willing to stand by Trent as he went through a court martial. I knew if they could just start talking and spend more time together, they could make a go at their marriage again. I loved how they knew each other so well it was like they had never been apart once they made love again. Funniest scene ever was Trent finding Laura's vibrator while she was in the shower. OMG I laughed so hard I almost fell off my sofa. Laura and Trent both had to work to make their relationship strong again, and I loved they did it with both laughter and tears.

I've loved each book in the Coming Home series, but have to say Trent and Laura's story is my favorite to date. I love the romance of these stories and how much emotion each one pulls from me when I read them. Back to You is another winner from Ms. Scott.

Captain Trent Davila is lost. He has spent 10 years in the military, the last several fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the process he was nearly killed, and his guilt of surviving when some of "his boys" didn't, has torn away at the man he was. The man he is, has volunteered for deployment after deployment, threatened with court martial for crimes he didn't commit, his wife has filed divorce papers, and he doesn't even know his two small children. He's tired of being lost.

Laura Davila hopes for a new life, if only Trent would sign the divorce papers. She's been a single mom for the multiple times he has deployed, has a job she loves, and lots of friends. She married for forever. "But forever was a long time. And her faith in their love died long ago on some distant battlefield."

The journey of these two people tore at my heart. Since the first Coming Home novel, Because of You, I have been fascinated with Trent and Laura. On the surface the perfect military couple to all they know, till things out of their control starting chipping away at their perfect. I shed a lot of tears reading this book, but not just for Trent and Laura. So many old friends, Carponti and Nicole, Shane and Jen, and the familiar names of fellow soldiers and some not so friendly officers.

I highly recommend this novel, as I do Ms. Scott's previous ones. The series is military romance, but it actually is so much more. The experience of being deployed and returning to the States happens every day to the men and women of our armed forces. "Coming home was not a single event. It was a process. A journey." Something Ms. Scott has experienced herself. I want to thank her, and all the men, women and families who have sacrificed so much for our country.

I received this novel from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.

I knew Back To You was going to be hard to read! The previous books in this series gave us an idea of Laura and Trent's crumbling marriage. While she's at home working and raising two young kids, he kept deploying over and over again, shutting her out more and more each time. It got to the point where Laura reached her breaking point and had to accept she may have lost her husband completely. Then he came home. Trent was being accused of something, so he came to home to deal with that, and during this time he learns to face his own demons and accept responsibility for what he did to his family.

Boy, did this story tear me apart! Jessica Scott wrote a story filled with realistic and raw emotions. She made me feel the anguish, the disappointments, and the helplessness for both Laura and Trent that I really couldn't take a side. Trent basically had to re-wire his body and mind to adjust to being home. He literally didn't know how to be with his family, cute hamsters and all. When this story begins, Laura has waited so long for Trent that she's actually ready to move on. I loved how the broken dishwasher Laura is dealing with at home is symbolic of her broken marriage...all laid out in pieces. I loved that we get to see their good friends again (Shane, Jen, Vic and Nicole) and witness them all supporting each other, injecting wise words and humor throughout.

Back to You is certainly a story of second chances. It's a story of a soldier coming home. It's a journey of a husband and wife slowly nurturing their neglected marriage. Thank you, Jessica Scott, for using your background, experiences, and expertise to give Laura and Trent such a touching and well-deserved story!

Heartbreaking look at a man whose given his life to the Army and ended up not only losing his family but he also lost himself and has no idea how to repair the damage he’s caused and become a normal functioning person away from war.

Trent and Laura’s story started in Because of You. At first glance we thought they had the perfect marriage with two children. But before long everything came unraveled. When that book ended not only had Trent lost good men along with two of his closes friends were wounded he was also being accused of crimes that if convicted he faced being court marshaled and his wife served him with divorce papers.

This book picks up with Trent going home to try and salvage not only his reputation but also his marriage. This book shows us why this series is called Coming Home. My heart broke for Trent for most of this book. The author did a fabulous job of showing what its like for these guys seeing what they see over there and having to come back home and try and act like they haven’t seen the atrocities they have and then try to have a normal relationship with their wives and children. We’re also given the view of the army wife who stood by her man through many deployments basically playing the role of single mother for years and she was ok with that until Trent stop communicating with her and lied about the reasons for all of his deployments.

The root of this book is about two people who used to love each other deeply then realizing that they are no longer the two people they married and then getting to know each other again and seeing that it doesn’t matter that they’ve changed because the core of their love is still there.

I’ve wanted Trent and Laura’s story since I first read Because of You and I was not disappointed.

A beautiful story! I almost don't know what else to say. I have followed Jessica Scott's career since her first novel. I then read her non fiction books, and am so glad she is still writing fiction. This story felt so real and I know all writers' rely on their life experiences to mold a story, but this had so much heart and heartbreak in it that it felt REAL. We had met Trent and Laura Davila in Jessica's other novels, but this was their story. Trent has been a commander in the army, relieved of his command and awaiting a court martial. While in country his wife had served him divorce papers, because he never stayed home but kept deploying for almost 10 years. While waiting for his trial, Trent realizes how much he has missed his wife and family. He does not want a divorce but does not know how to win her back. This is the story of a soldier coming home from war with all it's emotional overwash and trying to get his marriage back while learning how to live with all his issues.

Thank you Ms. Scott for your insight into a soldier's mind and emotional well being when returning from war, and also for being able to give us a wonderful heartfelt story.

This one has been a long time coming, Trent putting his family last and Laura slowly getting more and more fed up. I kept expecting Trent to realize that his actions are at the heart of what was going on with him and Laura, but it didn't, not for a long time.

I was stunned by how Trent's lawyer thought to fix things for him. I actually liked that Trent told him not only no, but hell no. I hated the lawyer when he went around Trent and asked Laura himself, it was a shitty thing to do and really, how was Laura to say no.

I didn't expect things to be fixed right away, but it was so slow going, a lot of times it was 1 step forward, 10 steps back. I really liked that all of their friends butted in and gave advice.

I was very glad when Trent went to therapy, he needed it. I also really liked it when Trent realized he was done with the "forced" appointments and was going to them on his own.

I sort of felt like how the court marshal was resolved in a way that was anti-climatic. I really wanted Trent to win on his own merits, but instead it was all politics.

I have been waiting for Trent and Laura's story since I first met them in Because of You. But it was more than worth the wait. Back to You looks at how Trent attempts to transition back home after being gone for four deployments and has no idea how to connect with his wife and kids. He doesn't want to expose his wife to anything that he has dealt with, but by doing that he has shut Laura out and she can no longer bear the pain of Trent walking away. The story of them finding their way back to each other is achingly beautiful. Trent is clearly struggling, but very much making an effort and working to find his way home to Laura and his family. Scott, as usual, does a wonderful job blending in realistic military details while keeping you engaged in the romance.

Very much looking forward to the next Coming Home novel!

ARC Copy, I give this 4 1/2 stars. This book is both emotional and sexy. I am happy to have Trent and Laura's story done. It was interesting to see inside what happens during war and the lives that it effects. I find this book more interesting and true for the fact that Jessica did go to war. The story was heartfelt and exactly how the story should have played out. There is some good sex scenes that add to the spice of the book. I also love that Nicole and Jen were in this book.I also like that Jessica didn't sugarcoat how Trent was really feeling and how he had to adjust back to the real world that wasn't the war.
