Another brilliant book by Bhyrappa. What I love about Bhyrappa is that he always write about strong woman character in every book. He wrote book on very sensitive topic caste system. Daatu deals with the myriad layers of complexity in the so-called caste system. This book expose the casteism with such intricate and delicate manner. He tackled one of them main problems plaguing our Hindu Society right now. Caste is misinterpreted and it created more fault-lines. But some sections of people will not consume such works because they're afraid that their ideas would be questioned. The amount of research Bhyrappa did is admirable. I read somewhere that he wrote this book within 2 months. It was amazing experience reading this book. I have intention of reading more of his books. Hope he keeps writing more books.

ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಬಂದ ನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾತಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಆಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬುವುದು ಒಪ್ಪುವಂತ ಮಾತು. ಈ ಸ್ಥಿತ್ಯಂತರವನ್ನು ಭೈರಪ್ಪರು ಕಂಡ ಬಗೆಯೇ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ವಸ್ತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರು ಈ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಿಂದ ಆಗುವ ತೊಡಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಥೆ ಹೆಣೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಜಾತಿಯ ಮೇಲಾಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕಿನ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣತೆಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಮತ್ತು ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಸಮರ್ಪಕವಾಗಿ ಓದುಗನಿಗೆ ದಾಟಿಸಿರುವ ಕೃತಿಯೇ ದಾಟು.
ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ತಾಕುವುದು ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ನೆಲೆಗಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ. ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಜಾತೀಯತೆ ಅನುಭವ ಒಬ್ಬರಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ, ಒಂದು ಪ್ರದೇಶದಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಪ್ರದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ, ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಳೆದ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿನ ಜಾತಿಯ ಕರಾಳತೆ ಈಗಿನ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಕಮ್ಮಿಯಾಗಿದೆ ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಓದಿನ ಅನುಭವ ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆಯಾಗಿ ಹಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಭಾವ ಸಾಂದ್ರತೆ ಸಿಗುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಾನುಭವದ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಂಬುದು ನನ್ನ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಬಿಂದುವಾದ 'ಸತ್ಯ'ಳ ಪಾತ್ರ ತುಂಬಾ ಸಶಕ್ತವಾಗಿ, ನೈಜತೆಯಿಂದ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಅವಳ ಬುದ್ಧಿಶಕ್ತಿ, ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಅನನ್ಯವಾದದ್ದು ಮತ್ತು ತುಂಬಾ ಗಟ್ಟಿತನದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಪಾತ್ರವದು. (ಗೃಹಭಂಗದ ನಂಜಮ್ಮನ ನಂತರ ಸತ್ಯಳಾ ಪಾತ್ರವೂ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಚ್ಚಳಿಯದೆ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.) ಆ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಸುತ್ತ ಬೆಸೆದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಇತರ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಾದ ಮೇಲಗಿರಿ ಗೌಡ, ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ, ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣಯ್ಯ, ಮೋಹನದಾಸ, ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ, ಬೆಟ್ಟಯ್ಯ, ಮೀರಾ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿವೆ.
ಆ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಜಾತೀಯತೆ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯ, ಅಧಿಕಾರಶಾಹಿ ನಡುವಳಿಕೆ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಕಾಮ, ಧರ್ಮ, ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ, ನೋವು, ನಿರಾಶೆ, ವಂಚನೆ, ಕಾಮ ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿರುವ ರೀತಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ.
ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ, ಜಾತಿ-ರಾಜಕೀಯಗಳ ಸಂಕೋಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತಃಕರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವೀಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಬೆರೆಸಿ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿರುವ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಳಕಳಿಯುಳ್ಳ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿಯಿದು.

This is an epic book. Only one book that can expose the casteism with such intricate and delicate manner. I am absolutely spellbound by the way SLB sir has narrated various caste system and its origins in such a delicate and detailed manner. For sure, without a doubt, this is a must read book for everyone.
So, which is the first caste that originated in the world. SLB has also gone into the roots of vedic times describing, why there was no reference to gods like Shiva, vishnu, Bramha, Ganesha, etc.. in the scriptures like Rigveda, Atharava Veda and so on. One would get questions like, when does this castes like Brahman (Smartha, Madhwa, Sri Vaishanava), Gowda, Khsatriya, Shoodra, Dalits, various intercastes and inner sub divisions have come into picture? Who started these practices? Why there is a difference between Upper Caste and Lower Caste?. For sure, you wont get an answer from this book. Rather, it allows you to think deep into these caste systems that was deep rooted since time immemorial.
The protagonists from the novel are just a mirror reflection of each one of us, who are behaving as if their caste is upper and others are lower one. The tumultous feelings of each and every characters like Satya, Venkataramanappa, Melagiri Gowda, Venkatesha, Mohanadasa, Bettayya, Meera, Srinivasa, Tirumale Gowda, etc, etc.. is an awesome expirience.
Truly a great read. I am quite amazed at the time SLB sir took to complete this novel. Yes, within one and half month he has completed this epic. Now I have a sense of satisfaction of acheiving something. Also, made me to realize all these caste systems are just a man made adjustments and there is a never a concluding answer for its which one is upper and which one is lower.
I recommened everyone to read this novel. Better late than never!! :)

There are very few books that call you back to them, that don't let you put them down. And this is one such book. The Book analyses the complex caste system that is deep rooted into our society through different characters. In the end one realizes that 'equality' is something that can only be imagined and described but practically never be achieved. That is the nature of the Nature - everything is not meant to be equal. What is ruling today will be ruled by something else tomorrow. As Satya understands this truth with her repeated discussions with Mohanadasa, those are suppressed today will suppress someone else tomorrow.

ಜಾತೀಯತೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬಹಳ ವಿವರವಾಗಿ ಇರುವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ.
ಈ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಜಾತಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯನ್ನ ನಾನು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿ, ತಿಳಿದು ಅನುಭವ ಇರದ ಕಾರಣ ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೇಳಿದ್ರೆ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಬಹುದು.
ಆದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಛಾಪನ್ನು ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಸುತ್ತೆ.
ಜಾತಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನ ಎಷ್ಟು ಉಚ್ಚ ಹಾಗೂ ನೀಚನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಅನ್ನೋದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ.
ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ಕೆಲವು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಮನಸಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯಿತು ಹಾಗೂ ಅವುಗಳ ಗತಿ ಎಣಿಸಿ ಬೇಜಾರೂ ಆಯಿತು.
ಈ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಜಾತಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯನ್ನ ನಾನು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿ, ತಿಳಿದು ಅನುಭವ ಇರದ ಕಾರಣ ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೇಳಿದ್ರೆ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಬಹುದು.

ಜಾತಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನ ಎಷ್ಟು ಉಚ್ಚ ಹಾಗೂ ನೀಚನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಅನ್ನೋದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ.
ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ಕೆಲವು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಮನಸಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯಿತು ಹಾಗೂ ಅವುಗಳ ಗತಿ ಎಣಿಸಿ ಬೇಜಾರೂ ಆಯಿತು.

His remarkable craftsmanship to address a social issue in his novel with an unbiased tale makes him the son of Goddess Saraswati. "Dattu" is an honest effort to tell the Varna system issue uniquely with creativity. Every personality and circumstance are carefully written to design an environment to question the Varna system, So we can understand the perversion of the original system under the shadows of greed and tyranny. The key reason to examine this book is to realize how good practices can fall into doom in the hands of lies, distortion, and fear.
Story blossoms around Tirumalapura temple and Practiced caste system in the community. Every community you meet would offer you an overview of their mindset, Customs, and superstition. Since the story was written based on a post-independence situation, You can witness the friction and hostility between a community in the arms of democracy and politics. Though it was written several years ago, it is still relevant to our society. Oppressed entity trying to become oppressor gives the disturbing reality of Human parochial view of life. Byrappa's works always give me hope for a greater future, But on the other hand, he also poisons hopes with human madness in his stories.
A most appealing element in this book is you can relate to every character and situation that arises till the end of this book. Genuine character are with true personality lived in the ocean of fictional life is what make this book more engaging. Like every book of Byrappa, Even this book revolves around a solid female character. Female characters are appealing and agreeable with their unbiased understanding of the puzzle and genuine effort to resolve it instead of trying to smash the patriarchy with their unicorn horns. Probably if men and women took inspiration from the characters in Byrappa's works, So many problems in society might have resolved by now instead of getting complicated.
There is always a lot to write about Byrappa's works, But I am yearning to procrastinate. And I am blamed for giving out spoilers among friends, So I am ending my review here without giving a single spoiler( I have a lot to write about a character, But it would give out the spoilers). Go and read it!!!!!

ಎಸ್. ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪ
ಶತಮಾನದಿಂದ ನಡೆದು ಬಂದ ಕಟ್ಟುಪಾಡುಗಳ ಆವರಣವೇ ಈ ದಾಟು. ಹೌದು, ಜಾತಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಂತಹ ಪಿಡುಗುಗಳು ಇನ್ನು ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಡಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಲೇ ಬೇಕು.
ಹಾಗಂತ ಶತಮಾನ ಹಾಕಿರುವ ಆವರಣವನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮಿಂದೊಮ್ಮೆ ದಾಟಿದರೆ ಎದುರಿಸ ಬೇಕಾದ ಸವಾಲುಗಳು, ಸಾವು-ನೋವುಗಳು, ದಾರುಣ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯೇ ದಾಟು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ..
ಅಂತರ್ಜಾತಿಯ ಪ್ರೇಮವು ಹಾಗೇ ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯತೆ ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಲು ಮಾಡುವ ಹೋರಾಟಗಳು ಕೆಲವು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀರುವ ದುರಂತಗಳು ಬೇಸರವೆನಿಸುವುದು. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೂಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯುವಂತವು.

3.5/5 A Brahmin woman (daughter of a priest) decides to marry a (rich and politically strong) Shudra man in rural Karnataka. The plot idea is simple. Casteism is baffling.
The award-winning book is an engrossing but unhurried read and the motivations and actions of each of the major characters have been given space. While “Harijan” characters and their stories play an important role, mind well that the focus is not on them. Which was strange for a book dealing with caste !
This book had been lying with me for sometime. This Diwali vacation, had decided to avoid easy reads and finally picked it up. Can read if u r a Bhyrappa fan.

This is my 3rd book by S.L. Bhyrappa after Yana and Aavarana.
As always, in his books we can observe the deep thoughts on caste system and strong nature of a woman.
This story is set up during independence. Protagonist Satya is from a Brahmin family who is a historical reader , doesn’t have belief in caste system. She strongly believe that caste system came into existence not only by the work they do but by the powerful rulers.
Shoodras have been treated so badly since many many years; similarly women by upper caste men. But, now the thoughts are improved. But women themselves have not come out of such restrictions even though men have changed.
Few of the highlights
Government give lot of benefits for upbringing of lower caste or women. But those are misused by many people.
Protagonist Satya argue like "Yes! there will be people who misuse it. We take shares of our ancestors properties , good deeds etc but not the share of bad deeds? We should give them a chance to come up by our little suffering. I mean let them also do the office works .. Let us also work on fields . It shouldn’t be like upper caste work on office and lower caste on fields."
But there will be people who have mentality to rule upper caste ones. It shouldn’t be that way. We should mingle well. These can be achieved by many many inter caste marriages so that in 20-30 years caste system root might get off.
You will be in deep thinking once read through it. There is only one caste that is Human caste. Let us follow that! Let us give a chance to everyone to live as they wish, but conforming to humanity...

ಒಂದು ನೈಜವಾದ, ಜಾತಿಯ ಹಾಗು ಅದರ ರಚನೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬಹಳ ತಿಳಿದುಕೋಳ್ಳಬಹುದಾದಂತಹ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ.
ಸತ್ಯ, ಮೀರಾ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಟ್ಟಯ್ಯ ಓಳ್ಳೆ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಇರುವ ಮನುಷ್ಯರು. ಉಳಿದ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಲಾಭಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಯಮಗಳನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವುದನ್ನ ನೊಡಬಹುದು. ಬ್ರಹಮಣನಾದ ವೆಂಕಟೀಶ ದುಡ್ಡಿನಾಸೆಗೆ ಶಾಸ್ರವನ್ನೆ ತಿದ್ದುತಾನೆ, ಒಂದು ಜೀವವನ್ನು ಹುಚ್ಚು ಹಿಡಿಸಿ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಜೀವದ ಬಲಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಅಧಿಕಾರವಿದ್ದರೆ ಏನುಬೀಕಾದರು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಗೌಡರ ಮನೆಯವರೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಈಗಲೂ ನಮ್ಮ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಗಳು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂಗತಿಯೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮಾಜ ಇನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ಏನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸತ್ಯ ಏಷಟು ತ್ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಿದಳು. ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಬೀರೆಯವರ ಮಾತು ಕೆಳಿ ಬಲಿಯಾದ.
ಅಂತ್ಯ ವಿಶಾದವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಬಹಳ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೂಳ್ಳಬಹುದಾದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಸಲಾಮ್.

ಅಧಿಕಾರವಿದ್ದರೆ ಏನುಬೀಕಾದರು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಗೌಡರ ಮನೆಯವರೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಈಗಲೂ ನಮ್ಮ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಗಳು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂಗತಿಯೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮಾಜ ಇನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ಏನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಭಾರತದ ಜಾತಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವ ಕಾರಣ ಇತ್ತೋ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಲ್ಲೋರ್ಯಾರೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಆದರೆ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಬದಲಾದ ರೀತಿಗೆ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥವೇ ಕಾರಣ.
ದಾಟಿ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡದ್ದು ಹಾವೋ , ಹೂವೋ ತಿಳಿಯೋದು.

೧೯೭೩ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಗೊಂಡು ೧೯೭೫ ರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ "ದಾಟು" ಒಂದು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಪರೀತ ಕೋಟಲೆ ಕೊಡುವ, ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಗೂ ತೊಡರಿಕೊಂಡು ಮುಂದೆ ನೆಡೆಯುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗದ ರೀತಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಈ "ಜಾತಿ, ಜಾತಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ/ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ" ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ವಸ್ತು.
ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಕಥೆ ನೆಡೆಯುವುದು ತಿರುಮಲಾಪುರ ಎನ್ನುವ, ಚಾತುರ್ವರ್ಣದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಜಾತಿಗಳು ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಊರು. "ಈ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿಷ್ಣು ದೇವಾಲಯ ಮೊದಲು ಶೈವ ಗುಡಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು ಆದರೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪಾಳೇಗಾರರು ವೈಷ್ಣವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತರಾಗಿ, ಗುಡಿಯೊಳಗಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಕೀಳಿಸಿಹಾಕಿ ವಿಷ್ಣು ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ, ಮೂಲಹಕ್ಕುದಾರರಾದ ಶಿವಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ವೈಷ್ಣವರ ವಶಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿ ಗುಡಿಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನ ಮಂಟಪವಿದೆ", ಎನ್ನುವ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನನಗೆ ಇದು ಬರೀ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಅನ್ನಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಬಂದ ಜಾತಿ ವೈಷಮ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಬುನಾದಿ ಎನ್ನಿಸಿತು.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೂ ಜಾತೀಯತೆಯ ಕುರಿತು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನೊಂದಿದ್ದವು, ನಿಲುವುಗಳೂ ಬೇರೆಯೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದವು.
" ನೀವು ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ಧರ್ಮ ಅಂತೀರೋ ಅದೆಲ್ಲ ರೂಢಿ. ಜಾತಿ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸದ ಮೂಲ ತತ್ತ್ವ ಯಾವುದು ? ಜನಾಂಗವೇ, ಬಣ್ಣವೇ, ರೂಪ ಲಕ್ಷಣವೇ ? ಜಾತಿ ಎಂಬುದು ತಪ್ಪು, ನಮ್ಮ ಧರ್ಮಪರಂಪರೆಗಳ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಅಧರ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಹೀನ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯೇ ವರ್ಣವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಎಂಬ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ ನನ್ನದು" ಎನ್ನವುದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರದ ನಿಲುವಾದ್ರೆ, ಮದುವೆಯ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪ ಬಂದಾಗ " ಈ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿರುವ ಅಂತವನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಒಂದಾಗುವ ಕಾಲ ಇನ್ನೂಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಎರಡು ಮೂರು ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳು ಕಳೆದು ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಯುವಕ ಯುವತಿಯರ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಮನೋಭಾವಗಳು ವಿಶಾಲವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದು ವರ್ಣವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಬಹುದೇನೋ" ಎಂದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಪಾತ್ರ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಜಾತಿ ವಿಷಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಭಂದಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ವಿಷಯಗಳಿವೆ, ಅದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಓದಿಯೇ ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸೂಕ್ತ.
ಅಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆಗೆ ದಕ್ಕುವಂತದ್ದಲ್ಲ "ದಾಟು" ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಅಂತ ಓದಿದಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು. ಕಾರಣ, ಜಾತಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪಾತ್ರ ಚಿತ್ರಣ, ನಾನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೊಳಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ನಿಜ. ಈ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದೊಷ್ಟು ಓದು ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಅನುಭವವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೊಂದು ದಿನ ನನ್ನದೇ ನಿಲುವುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಬಹುದು.

ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಕಥೆ ನೆಡೆಯುವುದು ತಿರುಮಲಾಪುರ ಎನ್ನುವ, ಚಾತುರ್ವರ್ಣದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಜಾತಿಗಳು ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಊರು. "ಈ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿಷ್ಣು ದೇವಾಲಯ ಮೊದಲು ಶೈವ ಗುಡಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು ಆದರೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪಾಳೇಗಾರರು ವೈಷ್ಣವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತರಾಗಿ, ಗುಡಿಯೊಳಗಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಕೀಳಿಸಿಹಾಕಿ ವಿಷ್ಣು ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ, ಮೂಲಹಕ್ಕುದಾರರಾದ ಶಿವಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ವೈಷ್ಣವರ ವಶಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿ ಗುಡಿಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನ ಮಂಟಪವಿದೆ", ಎನ್ನುವ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನನಗೆ ಇದು ಬರೀ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಅನ್ನಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಬಂದ ಜಾತಿ ವೈಷಮ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಬುನಾದಿ ಎನ್ನಿಸಿತು.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೂ ಜಾತೀಯತೆಯ ಕುರಿತು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನೊಂದಿದ್ದವು, ನಿಲುವುಗಳೂ ಬೇರೆಯೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದವು.
" ನೀವು ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ಧರ್ಮ ಅಂತೀರೋ ಅದೆಲ್ಲ ರೂಢಿ. ಜಾತಿ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸದ ಮೂಲ ತತ್ತ್ವ ಯಾವುದು ? ಜನಾಂಗವೇ, ಬಣ್ಣವೇ, ರೂಪ ಲಕ್ಷಣವೇ ? ಜಾತಿ ಎಂಬುದು ತಪ್ಪು, ನಮ್ಮ ಧರ್ಮಪರಂಪರೆಗಳ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಅಧರ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಹೀನ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯೇ ವರ್ಣವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಎಂಬ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ ನನ್ನದು" ಎನ್ನವುದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರದ ನಿಲುವಾದ್ರೆ, ಮದುವೆಯ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪ ಬಂದಾಗ " ಈ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿರುವ ಅಂತವನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಒಂದಾಗುವ ಕಾಲ ಇನ್ನೂಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಎರಡು ಮೂರು ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳು ಕಳೆದು ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಯುವಕ ಯುವತಿಯರ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಮನೋಭಾವಗಳು ವಿಶಾಲವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದು ವರ್ಣವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಬಹುದೇನೋ" ಎಂದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಪಾತ್ರ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಜಾತಿ ವಿಷಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಭಂದಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ವಿಷಯಗಳಿವೆ, ಅದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಓದಿಯೇ ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸೂಕ್ತ.
ಅಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆಗೆ ದಕ್ಕುವಂತದ್ದಲ್ಲ "ದಾಟು" ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಅಂತ ಓದಿದಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು. ಕಾರಣ, ಜಾತಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪಾತ್ರ ಚಿತ್ರಣ, ನಾನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೊಳಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ನಿಜ. ಈ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದೊಷ್ಟು ಓದು ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಅನುಭವವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೊಂದು ದಿನ ನನ್ನದೇ ನಿಲುವುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಬಹುದು.

Of course, a lot of opinions coming from every character are directly or indirectly influenced by the smaartha & shuddha vaidika ideologies of Mr Bhyrappa S L, the dharmika nyaya or morale is completely based around these ideologies, People shouldnt expect otherwise too (I have heard this criticism about him) - since he is well versed in those philosophies it is very much human penchant to be influenced by those ideologies and advaita philosophy. Also a notion of great respect towards the vedas, advaita philosophy and the pure vedic traditions (not necessarily Brahmins, as we know most of the today Brahmins are not pure vaidiks) is very much there in his works.

ನನ್ನ ಅತಿ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರರಲ್ಲಿ S.L.ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಒಬ್ಬರು. ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಳಕಳಿಯಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪದಕ್ಕೂ ತೂಕವಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅರ್ಥವಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೇ ಕಥೆಗಳಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ನಂತರವೂ ಅದರ ಕಥೆ ಮೆದುಳನ್ನು ಚಿಂತನೆಗೆ ತೊಡಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಂತಹ ಮಹಾನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರ ಇರುವುದು ನನ್ನ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯ.

ಜಾತ್ಯಾತೀತತೆ, ಸಮಾನತೆ, ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ವೈರಾಗ್ಯ, ಮತ(ತಿ)ಭ್ರಮಣೆ, ಜಾತಿಗಳೆಡಿಗಿನ ಅಂಧತ್ವ, ಕೆಳ ವರ್ಗದವರ ಆರ್ತನಾದ, ಮೇಲ್ವರ್ಗದವರ ಅಧಿಕಾರಶಾಹಿ ನಡವಳಿಕೆ, ಸಾವು, ನೋವು, ರಾಜಕೀಯ, ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆ, ಲಂಚ, ಲಂಪಟತನ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮತ್ವ, ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ, ದಂಗೆ, ಪುರಾಣ, ಇತಿಹಾಸ, ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಧರ್ಮ, ಅರ್ಥ, ಕಾಮ... ಹೀಗೆ "ದಾಟು" ಎಂಬ ಮಹಾಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳ ಬರೆಯಲು ಕುಳಿತರೆ ಒಂದು ವಿಷಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಒಂದು ಅಕ್ಷರ ಬರೆಯುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಅದರ ಕುರಿತು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ತಿಳಿದಿರುವ ವಿಷಯ. ಆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕತೆ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಬೆರೆಸಿ ೪೦೦+ ಪುಟಗಳ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟ ಓದನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ತಿರುಮಲಾಪುರ, ತುಮಕೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಭೂಮಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ಹುಡುಗಿಯಾದ ಸತ್ಯಭಾಮ, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯರ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ನೆಂಟರಿಷ್ಟರ ನಡುವೆ ಸುತ್ತುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕತೆಯಾದರೇ, ಅವರು ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಣೆದು ಬೆಸೆದಿರುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಎರಡು ಪಾತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ನೆಂಟರಿಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲದೇ ಬೆಟ್ಟಯ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರವು ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಸಮಾನತೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಮೇಲ್ವರ್ಗದ ಜಾತಿಗಳ ಜನ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣತ್ವ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಮಾಡುವ ಸಾಹಸಗಳು ಕನಿಕರ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಸತ್ಯಭಾಮ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳು. ಈಗಲೂ ಅಂತರ್ಜಾತೀಯ ವಿವಾಹಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ವಿರೋಧ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಮರ್ಯಾದಾ ಹತ್ಯೆಗಳು ಈಗಲೂ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಾನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಈ ಕಥೆಯೂ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷಿತರಾದ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಸತ್ಯ ಜಾತಿ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯನ್ನು ನಂಬಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. (ಅಶಿಕ್ಷಿತರು ನಂಬುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ). ಸತ್ಯ ಅವಳ ತಂದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಣ್ಣನ ಒತ್ತಾಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯ ಮಗ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಅವನ ತಾಯಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಜ್ಜನ ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ದಾಳಿಗೆ ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದಾ? ಉತ್ತರ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ.
ಜಾತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಕಥೆಯ ಹೊರಗೆ ಮಾತಂಗಿ, ಮೋಹನ್ದಾಸ, ಮೀರಾ ಮತ್ತು ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಸಮಾಜದ ಅವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದ ಕೈಗನ್ನಡಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನನ್ನ ಪರಿಚಯದವರೊಬ್ಬರು ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ "ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುವವರೇ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳೋದು". ತಪ್ಪಿದ್ದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಹೇರಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಾತಂಗಿ, ಮೋಹನ್ದಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಮೀರಾ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಸತ್ಯಳ ಅಣ್ಣ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ?
ಸತ್ಯಳ ತಂದೆ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣಯ್ಯನವರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗುವ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳು ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಕಿದೆಯಾ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಉಳಿದಿವೆ. ಸತ್ಯಳಂತೆ ಯೋಚಿಸಬಲ್ಲ ಕೋಟ್ಯಾಂತರ ಜನರ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಖಂಡಿತಾ ಇದೆ ಪ್ರಪಂಚಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಳ ನಿಲುವುಗಳು ಅನುಕರಣನೀಯ, ಆದರ್ಶಪ್ರಾಯ ಎಂದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಜಾತಿವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರಿ ದುರಸ್ತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಈಗಲೂ ಆ ದುರಸ್ತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಲೇ ಇದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೂ? ಜಾತಿ ಪಂಗಡಗಳು ಕೊನೆಗಂಡು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಾಗಬಲ್ಲದಾ? ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಾಗರದಷ್ಟು ವಿಷಯವಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ, ಈ ಸಾಸಿವೆಯಷ್ಟು ಪರಿಚಯ ಸಾಲದು. ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಸಮಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ.

ಜಾತ್ಯಾತೀತತೆ, ಸಮಾನತೆ, ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ವೈರಾಗ್ಯ, ಮತ(ತಿ)ಭ್ರಮಣೆ, ಜಾತಿಗಳೆಡಿಗಿನ ಅಂಧತ್ವ, ಕೆಳ ವರ್ಗದವರ ಆರ್ತನಾದ, ಮೇಲ್ವರ್ಗದವರ ಅಧಿಕಾರಶಾಹಿ ನಡವಳಿಕೆ, ಸಾವು, ನೋವು, ರಾಜಕೀಯ, ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆ, ಲಂಚ, ಲಂಪಟತನ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮತ್ವ, ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ, ದಂಗೆ, ಪುರಾಣ, ಇತಿಹಾಸ, ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಧರ್ಮ, ಅರ್ಥ, ಕಾಮ... ಹೀಗೆ "ದಾಟು" ಎಂಬ ಮಹಾಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳ ಬರೆಯಲು ಕುಳಿತರೆ ಒಂದು ವಿಷಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಒಂದು ಅಕ್ಷರ ಬರೆಯುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಅದರ ಕುರಿತು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ತಿಳಿದಿರುವ ವಿಷಯ. ಆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕತೆ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಬೆರೆಸಿ ೪೦೦+ ಪುಟಗಳ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟ ಓದನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ತಿರುಮಲಾಪುರ, ತುಮಕೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಭೂಮಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ಹುಡುಗಿಯಾದ ಸತ್ಯಭಾಮ, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯರ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ನೆಂಟರಿಷ್ಟರ ನಡುವೆ ಸುತ್ತುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕತೆಯಾದರೇ, ಅವರು ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಣೆದು ಬೆಸೆದಿರುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಎರಡು ಪಾತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ನೆಂಟರಿಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲದೇ ಬೆಟ್ಟಯ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರವು ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಸಮಾನತೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಮೇಲ್ವರ್ಗದ ಜಾತಿಗಳ ಜನ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣತ್ವ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಮಾಡುವ ಸಾಹಸಗಳು ಕನಿಕರ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಸತ್ಯಭಾಮ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳು. ಈಗಲೂ ಅಂತರ್ಜಾತೀಯ ವಿವಾಹಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ವಿರೋಧ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಮರ್ಯಾದಾ ಹತ್ಯೆಗಳು ಈಗಲೂ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಾನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿರುವ ಈ ಕಥೆಯೂ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷಿತರಾದ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಸತ್ಯ ಜಾತಿ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯನ್ನು ನಂಬಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. (ಅಶಿಕ್ಷಿತರು ನಂಬುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ). ಸತ್ಯ ಅವಳ ತಂದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಣ್ಣನ ಒತ್ತಾಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯ ಮಗ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಅವನ ತಾಯಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಜ್ಜನ ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ದಾಳಿಗೆ ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದಾ? ಉತ್ತರ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ.
ಜಾತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಕಥೆಯ ಹೊರಗೆ ಮಾತಂಗಿ, ಮೋಹನ್ದಾಸ, ಮೀರಾ ಮತ್ತು ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಸಮಾಜದ ಅವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದ ಕೈಗನ್ನಡಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನನ್ನ ಪರಿಚಯದವರೊಬ್ಬರು ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ "ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುವವರೇ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳೋದು". ತಪ್ಪಿದ್ದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಹೇರಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಾತಂಗಿ, ಮೋಹನ್ದಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಮೀರಾ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಸತ್ಯಳ ಅಣ್ಣ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ?
ಸತ್ಯಳ ತಂದೆ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣಯ್ಯನವರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗುವ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳು ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಕಿದೆಯಾ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು ಉಳಿದಿವೆ. ಸತ್ಯಳಂತೆ ಯೋಚಿಸಬಲ್ಲ ಕೋಟ್ಯಾಂತರ ಜನರ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಖಂಡಿತಾ ಇದೆ ಪ್ರಪಂಚಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಳ ನಿಲುವುಗಳು ಅನುಕರಣನೀಯ, ಆದರ್ಶಪ್ರಾಯ ಎಂದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಜಾತಿವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರಿ ದುರಸ್ತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಈಗಲೂ ಆ ದುರಸ್ತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಲೇ ಇದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೂ? ಜಾತಿ ಪಂಗಡಗಳು ಕೊನೆಗಂಡು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಾಗಬಲ್ಲದಾ? ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಾಗರದಷ್ಟು ವಿಷಯವಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ, ಈ ಸಾಸಿವೆಯಷ್ಟು ಪರಿಚಯ ಸಾಲದು. ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಸಮಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ.
ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಓದಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ನನ್ನೊಂದಿಗೂ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ.

ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಸಾವಿರಿಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಜಾತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟು ಹಾಕಿ,ಇದೀಗ ತಾವು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರು ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಅಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ವಾಸ್ತವದ ಸಂಗತಿ.ಇದೆಲ್ಲದರ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾದ ತಿರುಳುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ಊರಿನ ಕಥೆಯಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

After Parva this is second book I read by Bhyrappa. Again it is another brilliant book by him.
In this novel, he is addressing the very sensitive topic of caste system in India through the characters in a village. Through its characters he is successfully analyzing the deep rooted caste system and make sure it doesn't become an essay on the history of caste system.
By the end the author proves almost no one wants equality and wants to feel superior to someone else. Those who were oppressed over the centuries wants to become the oppressor and wants to oppress those who oppressed them the same horrible way.
Though author says right education may be the right way to overcome it, in the modern India we are seeing everyone trying to use their caste for political and monetary benefits and nobody wants to achieve a society with no caste system.
I enjoyed reading this good book.

2021ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ವಿಜೇತ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದೋಣ ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ .ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು "ದಾಟು ".

"Textbook"ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾತಿ ಪದ್ದತಿಯ ಜನನ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಕಟ್ಟುಪಾಡುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಇರುವಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ನಡೆದಾಗ, ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಆದ ಅದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಕಥೆ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅದನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಸುಲಭ .

As expected, it was interesting and resourceful. It felt as if I lived in those times amongst those people and experienced every intricate detail. Like aavarana's Lakshmi, Sathyabhaama here is strong, rebellious and inspirational. Everything revolves around her and somehow she stands tall at the end as well. Bhyrappa sir never fails to keep the readers bound to the unveiling story. Book clearly shows how the caste system leads to tragic turn of events in people's life and collapses harmony in society.

Another brilliant book by S.L Bhairappa. The book talks about the various caste system in an intricate and delicate manner. One of my observations from reading some of Bhairappa's books is that he always tries to portray a strong woman character, so is here, Satyabhama, daughter of a priest who tries to seek self-discovery by following and questioning her own thoughts, thinking critically rather than submitting herself to the deep-rooted beliefs of the society. The wonderful and gripping story about how people are divided in the name of the caste system. So ahead of time this book definitely deserves a 5* on Goodreads
