Fifteen years old and counting, and the woman doesn't look a day over five-hundred!
As I've mentioned in another review, Iris Wildthyme was originally a character who appeared in the Doctor Who novel The Scarlet Empress. Since then Iris has gone on to forge a path in her own series of short stories and audio plays. This collection marks Iris' fifteenth anniversary, and, keeping to her parodic style, comes at a time when Doctor Who itself is celebrating its own fiftieth birthday.
This collection of Iris stories doesn't just deal with the incarnation of Iris modelled on the wonderful Katy Manning, and contains stories of Irises seen many times before, in addition to some new faces too. As well as containing stories by regular writers such as Iris' creator Paul Magrs, Iris Fifteen also introduces new writing talent to the series, each of which adds their own unique and hilarious stories to bolster the wonderful life and times of Ms. Wildthyme.
The highlight in the anthology for me has to be Project Wildthyme, which, for those who have a detailed knowledge of Doctor Who audio history, features an appearance by the sinister outside the government agency The Forge (think Torchwood). Because of this, the anthology again for me has some clever and down-right hilarious references to Iris' previous appearances in the prose format, which just had to make this story the top dog for me.
I raise a G&T to you, Ms. Wildthyme. May your nutty adventures live on for a good fifteen years or more yet!
The best book in the obverse range. The types of stories included haven’t changed, but they’re much more consistent in quality this time around. There’s a nice mix of more personal stories alongside the more ludicrous ones.
Wasn’t enjoying the first half of the book, then it all clicked with the Hendecahedron story, and got much better. 4 stars for stories in the second half, 2 for the first half.
Usual party assortment of amazing gems and warm smiley ones, with one or two pieces of self-indulgent twaddle in the mix to keep this collection from being perfect.
