Premier roman d’Enrique Serpa, Contrebande dépeint à merveille le monde turbulent de La Havane dans les années vingt. À travers l’agitation d’une foule de pêcheurs, prostituées, contrebandiers, enfants miséreux, on voit couver le feu qui embrasera l’île de Cuba.

Histoire trouble d’un trafic de rhum en pleine Prohibition aux États-Unis, Contrebande est aussi l’histoire d’un face-à-face ambigu entre l’armateur de La Buena Ventura et Requin, le capitaine de bord, homme d’honneur et pirate à ses heures.

Publié en 1938, constamment réédité, Contrabando est considéré comme un classique de la littérature cubaine contemporaine.
« Vous êtes le meilleur romancier d’Amérique latine, et vous devez tout abandonner pour écrire des romans » disait Ernest Hemingway à Enrique Serpa à qui il reprochait de consacrer trop de temps à son activité de journaliste. Quant à Eduardo Manet, qui a accepté de préfacer la traduction de Contrebande, il place sans hésiter Serpa aux côtés des plus grands, Carpentier, Faulkner ou… Hemingway. Enrique Serpa (1900-1968) a été traduit pour la première fois en français chez Zulma en 2009.

Κούβα πριν την επικράτηση του Κάστρο, καταραμένη φτώχεια και πάλη για την επιβίωση με όλα τα μέσα!
Αφού η ψαριά δεν πληρώνει, θα στραφούμε στο Λαθρεμπόριο...
Καλογραμμένο, άλλοτε ρομαντικό και άλλοτε σκληρό αλλά πάντα με αξιοπρέπεια και μαγκιά, το βιβλίο με ταξίδεψε στην εποχή όπου όλα ήταν μετρημένα...

Ένα υπέροχο βιβλίο που σε μεταφέρει στον κόσμο των ανθρώπων που ζουν στο περιθώριο, εκεί που η θάλασσα , το εμπόριο και ο νόμος συναντιούνται με την ανάγκη και την επιβίωση.

Ο Σέρπα δεν προσπαθεί να εξοραϊσει τη ζωή των λαθρεμπόρων, δείχνει τη φτώχεια , την απλιστία , αλλά και την ανθρώπινη πλευρά αυτών που παλεύουν να επιβιώσουν. Οι χαρακτήρες είναι γεμάτοι αντιφάσεις που κινούνται σε μια γκρίζα ζώνη ηθικής.

Εξαιρετικό βιβλίο - ψυχογράφημα. Χωρίς ιδιαίτερες κορυφώσεις στην εξέλιξη αλλά κυρίως στην ψυχολογική κατάσταση του αφηγητή με ένα βασικό μειονέκτημα: Η γλώσσα του δεν κατορθώνει να πείσει ότι υπάρχει απόσταση μεταξύ του συγγραφέα και του χαρακτήρα ο οποίος προσεγγίζει σαν επιτηδευμένος λόγιος τις ψυχολογικές διακυμάνσεις τις δικές τους ή των άλλων χαρακτήρων ή ακόμα και τις περιγραφές της θάλασσας και τιυ φυσικού περιβάλλοντος και όχι βάσει αυτού που περιμένει κάποιος από έναν πλοικτήτη που φλερτάρει με το πέρασμα στην αντίπερα όχθη της παρανομίας.

Αυτό που λέμε ρωμαλέο, σκληροτράχηλο μυθιστόρημα. Γνήσια προλεταριακό αλλά όχι εκνευριστικά διδαχτικό ή ιδεοληπτικό, ούτε όμως και ιδεολογικά τυφλό. Μια απλή(;) ιστορία ανθρώπινων παθών, γραμμένη εξαιρετικά.

For me a book is a transport to another environnement far away form our daily life . This book allows reader to discover Cuba in th 1920S through the lives of several fischermen. The story is about a boat owner from a bourgeois origin who is obsessed with is own image. In order to be admire by his fischermen for his courage, in particuliar by his second, he decides, despite his natural lack of boldness, to engage in bootlegging with his crew. The weakness and the vanity of the main character cause him to be mocked by his entourage. Finally, this book allows readers to understand the importance of masculinity for those living in poor environments. In fact, force, courage, phlegm or the lack of remorse are the main values of the fischermen. This book is also a reflection on poverty. Some characters think that the communism or the syndicalism, by advocating revolt among the lower classes, is the solution for better living conditions. However, other characters believe that poverty is a fatality by saying that revolution doesn't lead to anything. Thus, through deep dialogues and realism « Contrebande » is a novel that allows reader to immerse himself in cuban fischerman's world.
