Ann Nocenti is most noted as an editor for Marvel Comics, for whom she edited New Mutants and The Uncanny X-Men. She made her comics writing debut on a brief run of Spider-Woman (#47-50) and subsequently wrote a long run of Daredevil (1st series) #236-291 (minus #237) from 1986 to 1991, directly following on from Frank Miller's definitive Born Again storyline. She also wrote the 1986 Longshot limited series for Marvel, and in the same year produced the Someplace Strange graphic novel in collaboration with artist John Bolton. She wrote "the Inhumans Graphic Novel" in 1988. In 1993, she wrote the 16-issue run of Kid Eternity for the DC Comics imprint Vertigo.
In Incredible Hulk #291, published in September 1983 (cover date January 1984), Ann Nocenti made a cameo appearance, talking to Dr. Bruce Banner, in a history written by Bill Mantlo, drawn by Sal Buscema and inked by Carlos Garzón and Joe Sinnot. That time Ann Nocenti was Assistant Editor for Larry Hama on Incredible Hulk and X-Men.
She is noted for her left-wing political views which, particularly during her run on Daredevil, caused some controversy among some fans who didn't agree with her politics.
She created several popular characters, including Typhoid Mary, Blackheart, Longshot and Mojo, and wrote the 1998 X-Men novel Prisoner X.
Although Nocenti left comic books in the '90s after the industry sales collapsed, she later returned to the field, penning stories such as 2004's Batman & Poison Ivy: Cast Shadows.
In Ultimate X-Men, a reimagination of the X-Men comic, the character Longshot, who was invented by her, has the civil name Arthur Centino. His last name, Centino, is an anagram of Nocenti and a homage to Nocenti. The name Arthur is for the co-creator of Longshot Arthur Adams who was Ann Nocenti's artist on the Longshot Mini Series.
She edited High Times magazine for one year (2004) under the name Annie Nocenti and is the former editor of the screenwriting magazine Scenario.
This wasn’t bad I was just mostly lost. This is the only book that every new issue I had to read the synopsis of everything up to the new issue. The Feral Five look cool by the end I’m excited to see where that goes next but the whole ending felt so rushed. Like maybe they needed another issue or two to unravel it slower. I’m kind of just left in the dust unable to see the final product.
Life hasn't been too easy on Carol lately. Just when she could really use a break, she finds herself thrown into a new adventure – literally. One moment, she was talking to a group of teenage troublemakers; the next, she was on a strange planet.
That wouldn't normally be a problem. The problem comes in the form of the teenagers that were thrown here alongside her. She can't exactly fly them all home, now can she? Worse, these teens seem to be getting pulled into a revenge plot against her.
Review:
Oh, it so pains me to say this, but I don't think I liked Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest all that much. Okay, let me take a step back: I had to work hard to go into this with neutral expectations. I'm still hurting because of the end of the current (not current anymore, though, is it?) run of Captain Marvel. I loved Kelly Thompson's take and wasn't ready to see the reigns handed off (not that they needed my permission or anything, ha).
So maybe my not loving this volume is a little bit biased on my part. But I don't think so. Even the good parts of Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest felt rushed at best. And there are good parts! The teens have some excellent points about technology and their future. But it's all shunted to the side for the sake of a grudge. Sigh.
Also, any Captain Marvel plot that includes Spider-Woman will generally make me happy. But Jessica almost feels like an afterthought half the time. Speaking of afterthoughts, Chewy was mentioned in the description, but in reality, she's there for, like, two panels, so that's disappointing. #JusticeForChewy.
Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest tried to do something I love from the Kelly Thomson run of Captain Marvel – acknowledge the past. In this case, it attempted to address Carol's past with Nitro. Unfortunately, that past is dark and complex and probably couldn't have been appropriately handled in only five issues. So it feels flat at best and offensive at worst. I'm inclined to go with flat, but other fans may feel differently.
I would love to know if the new superheroes introduced (created?) in Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest will become part of the larger lore that is Marvel. I could see it going that way. Likewise, I could see them getting dropped into limbo, never to be seen again. I'll have to do some digging into that.

This was bad lol. Its really a word salad lmao like whatever is happening, the new villain is introduced and well she teams up with another one Nitro and no reason but he wants to kill Carol and then it becomes something about other planet being polluted by Humans and them wanting revenge for that or something and we don't get the origin of the villain and with Carol well she has to go to a school to inspire some children with her talks but they all end up in a black hole and to other planet/dimension and they get power or something and well these children and a couple other elders now wanna destroy the world or make it right lmao? Anything goes i feel?
The writer was really like using AI or what to write this hotch potch of a story lmao. I don't think there's any good thing about it minus the art and wow that Sissyphus story they bring it up constantly. The writing is absolute garbage clearly.
The story could have been a fun meta commentary about humans polluting other places and about people who are lost and finding something to believe in or their path and becoming saviors or helping others but no its the typical bland characters that are famous these days.
Five issues of a nice big bowl of Ann Nocenti's word salad. This is terrible. None of it really makes any sense. Nitro, the guy who killed off the original Captain Marvel, returns to do absolutely nothing. There's subplots of dumping garbage on other worlds and kids whining about how the older generation have ruined everything and they should just die now. None of it has anything to do with anything. The new villain, Nada, has a lot to say but also says nada. She just spouts whatever story comes to her head to later contradict it with another one. I really don't understand what she must have on those in the comic book industry that people keep giving Nocenti work.
This one was really all over the place. Feel like they might have needed a bridge to get Carol from where she left off to where she is headed. Almost a DNF for me. Hopefully Captain Marvel gets back to good with her new run. Skip this one.
The parts with the villain seem like they're going somewhere, but it winds up being a backdoor pilot for some guys we'll never see again who might brush up against racial stereotypes.
The amateur astrologists and Maine fishermen also seem unnecessary.
Feels like it wants to say something about AI, about alienation, about pollution, about youth disenfranchisement especially amongst poor kids of colour...but the result just ends up feeling vaguely insulting and muddled even if it might occasionally have flashes of something that would've worked.
DNF doesn’t happen very often with me….but I’ve no clue what the heck they did with Carol this time. The story was just all over the place. Not even Chewie could save this one.
A great long running Marvel arc for a character is always followed up with a crappy story for that same character. I don't make the rules, that's just how it is.
Woof. What a load of missed potential. But let’s be fair here…
The good: The art was mostly nice, especially the space scenes. I enjoyed the singular panel of Chewie.
The bad: The dialogue. The characters. The story.
Ugh. Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest was at best, forgettable and at worst, offensive… written by someone out of touch who does not know or understand the characters she’s writing or the audience she’s writing for. It’s painfully obvious Nocenti didn’t know the significance of Nitro to the legacy of Captain Marvel before drafting this, and thoughtless that she didn’t bother attempting to understand it in order to do something worthwhile here. Furthermore, no long term reader of Carol Danvers will enjoy a take on her that calls her a ‘bossy blonde bimbo’ who punches her problems.
a 'Grateful Dead' looking Nitro? a ...weird looking 'raised in pollution' alien villain named, Nada? (as in...nothing?) a group of whining teens that spend the whole series pouting what the adults have done? ... .. . The Feral Five? Seriously? Your team is based on the premise that these kids embody feral qualities of different animals? OOooooo...kay -------- So, Nocenti has a long and storied past with Marvel comics. She's also known to be highly political in her views. Makes me wonder if this miniseries is another soap box for her to ramble on. It gets pretty heavy handed with the environmentalism and other stands that the characters take stands on.
You're not really missing much if you pass on this.
Not my favorite Captain Marvel by a long shot. It's ham-fisted in its message and ultimately nothing mans anything. I was very much skimming by the end.
Edit (4-11-25): This one was so forgettable I picked it up a second time entirely forgetting I had read it before until I got about 5 pages in ><
