Sharon Burch Toner is the author of the Maggie McGill Mysteries series.
This series of lighthearted mystery adventures features a mother/daughter team, Maggie and Allie McGill. The two strong, independent, and resourceful women romp through their mysterious and frightening adventures with grace and an enduring joie de vivre that serves them and the reader well.
Sharon Burch Toner’s Irish grandmother gave her a lifelong appreciation for a story well told. Her love affair with books began at age six when she discovered the public library in her small town. From that young age, she proceeded to devour any printed material that crossed her path.
After a life as mother, psychotherapist and spiritual explorer, writing is her retirement occupation. She says that for her writing is as necessary as food and shelter.
She lives with her two feline roommates in southern California
Maggie has decided she no longer has reason to stay in Florida, when her only family - Allie - lives across the continent in California. Maggie sells all her possessions and moves to California to be near Allie. Her art has provided her with a sizable income, and her dear friend the Art dealer, insists on continuing to sell her art and present "Shows" for her, all she needs to do is to provide him with her art on a regular basis.
Her plane trip contained an interesting group of people. Her attempt to visit with the couple across from her was nearly futile. The man spoke very little English and his wife spoke only French. Maggie dis discover the man was invited to California on an invitation to possibly become a professor at a large institution. He did not know if he would accept, yet.
While waiting for Allie at the airport, Maggie wanted to take pictures of new moments of this transition in her life. She observed a few men with turbans on their heads and dark glasses, plus a couple of black limousines. It felt creepy.
Allie soon picked her up and took her home for the night. The next day they would search for the perfect home on a beach to rent. Miraculously they found it that same day. It was only a short distance from Allie.
In the following couple of days, Maggie and Allie found a few essential furnishings and other items. Now Allie was ready to show Maggie around some of the Tourist Sites....A couple of unexpected situations occurred. Surely they had to be accidents.
The adventures continues escalate and suspenseful mystery evolves, mixed with a "tad" of humor and a "smidgeon" of romance.
I loved the fun, clean, adventure. I did not realize this was the 6th in the series. Although these can be read as "stand alones", one really needs to read the first of the series to get the full effect. The other books branch out from there. I cannot wait to read Maggie's Art!
My review of this book offers a Four and a Half Stars rating.
