3.5 stars. I re-read this detective novel (by Takao Tsuchiya) from the 1970s (we travel back in time to the ancient world where people did not use cell phones and internet!). Seduction of the Needle is a decently written thriller about the kidnapping of a little baby girl, the police officials must work together to rescue the baby, but all of a sudden, the mother of the infant was murdered by the kidnapper while on her way to deliver the ransom. Why would the murderer do this?
I like the murder mystery in this book, although I had read this book before a few years ago, so I had no problem guessing/recalling who is the real murderer, , still I like how the murder mystery is explained and the motivation is reasoned in the end.
I also like how the police officials were written in this book and how the author revealed their different personalities to us, I like the sense of humor they show among themselves when they work together. I like how none of these officials are super-smart, instead they all have to work very hard and rely on their experience and understanding of human nature to get closer to the truth.
However, I'm disappointed that in the middle of the book, the author threw in a few suspects, one of them is a young woman who seems to have major reason to hate the kidnapped baby's family, but her story line got cut off halfway, which almost feels like the author had suddenly changed his mind in the middle of the book and abandoned the backstory about this young woman, and this half-baked story line ends up looking very forced and confusing to me.
