明治から昭和初期の劇作家・小説家である岡本綺堂の代表的作品。シリーズ第34話「雷獣と蛇」。手習い師匠の小左衛門の寺子屋へ通っていた生薬屋の娘、お直が、稽古帰りに行方不明になった。習字の出来が悪く、小左衛門に叱られたのを苦にした家出なのだろうか。お直が二通の手紙を頑なに隠していたと知った半七は、お直の兄、藤太郎と瀬戸物屋の娘のお紋の関係を突き止める。
