This is a manga that starts slow and picks up as it goes on. It starts out with a character essentially getting revenge on his old employer for being a jerk to him. It's hard to relate to either of them, and it doesn't get much easier to, but you at least start to understand Komomo (our heroine) more as things go on. She's not a jerk on purpose. She just reeeeaaalllyyy doesn't know any better.

I think the strongest two chapters in this volume are the last two, in which Komomo tries to learn to cook and learns the value of a simple "thank you" and in which Komomo is too clueless to get bullied and shows herself to be a generally good (if air-headed) human being.

I'll probably read the next volume, since this one finished up stronger than it started, and see if Minami-sensei can keep the momentum going.

This was a very strange, but really cute manga. I understand the concept of revenge, but lol this one takes it to a different level. I really loved the art and the fact that it takes place in a sweets shop. It made me hungry just reading about it, but I really enjoyed it. And although Komomo has a lot of growing up and learning to do, she still is a fun character to read about. I definitely picked this up on a whim and I'm glad that I did.

3.5 stars! All of the desserts included induced some cravings, and it’s cute so far otherwise. I’m a little unsure of the character dynamics, but we’ll see how it goes!

Komomo was a spoiled little girl. She got everything she wanted as a child, other than seeing her parents because they were working so much. She especially loved picking on the son her family's pastry chef, Natsu. One day, this father leaves and goes to France and he goes too. Her family loses their money and now she's poor and trying to find a job but can't keep anything down.

Well, guess who comes back... none other than Natsu, he's now working at his father's little cafe while he's gone. He wants to find Komomo and bully her like she did him when they were younger. That seems to be his life goal.... he sure didn't aim very high. He wants her to know what he went through I guess. Writing this out now... it sounds rather strange but it was an entertaining manga and I do plan to continue as the art is wonderful and it had me laughing and I don't laugh enough anymore.

If you're looking for a fun, strange, and quick to read manga, this is the one for you. It's not a hard plot to follow, it's simple and something that is perfect when you want to read but can't really focus too hard. It's cute and silly and just fun.

I loved this!

I've been eying it for some time and decided to bite the bullet because it looks so sweet, and it was!

Though at times in a really odd way. LOL!

I feel this almost an enemies-to-lovers kind of romance, but not really? It's complicated, but I enjoyed this complication because Komomo may be very naive, but she is super sweet. In volume one you can already see the growth in her character. Natsu on the other hand…

I just don't know about that boy. LOL! I DO like him though and I think once he stops being mean to Komomo he will be quite the character!

Probably my favorite part outside of the sweets aspect (because this book will make you hungry and make you want all the sweets LOL), I LOVEDDD what Komomo learns as the story progresses. She is such a different person from the beginning to the end thanks to Yuri sharing something with her. It was fantastic!

Highly recommend if you're looking for a different kind of shojo as well as one with yummy food and an enemies-to-lovers-but-not-really romance!

I'm a big fan of Maki Minami. She has an adorable art style that she combines with sweet romance, especially in this new series of hers all about sweets! As a personal baker, I love reading a quality manga series about baking and pastries. Somehow, these manga artists can both make me hungry and invested in romance at the same time! I picked up a copy of Komomo Confiserie for three reasons: the adorable cover, the adorable title, and I just knew Minami-san would deliver a fantastically adorable story. While the plot synopsis on the back was a bit underwhelming, I found that I really enjoyed this first volume.

I'll start off by talking about the art. I absolutely love the cover. The pastel colors and sweet font really suit the overall tone of the manga. It displays the design of the main girl, which I also love. I am just too fond of shojo protagonist with thick eyebrows. Komomo is an adorable heroin who just gets cuter with every bit of frills and lace that are put on her. As I said before, Maki Minami has a very cute art style. However, I also love the way she draws her intense features. Every panel was just so pleasant to me; the entire work was so sweet and enjoyable to the eyes.

While the art excelled in all aspects, I find that I have mixed feelings about the story thus far. This first volume is a mixed bag of good and bad story elements. A good element is our main girl herself. I love Komomo's character. She is sort of the run-of-the-mill rich girl character but also more. She is so strong and passionate. I just love watching her pat herself on the back. Typically, I really hate shojo bully arcs, as they are such an overused trope, but I actually found myself liking how it was used in the last chapter because of how Komomo handled it. She not only did not cry or even feel negatively, but when the girls bullying her bullied someone else, she did not stand for such nonsense. Komomo is just so well written; I look forward to her character development. On the other hand, I am not too fond of her love interest so far. While Natsu is visually appealing, I could not help but be annoyed by his character. Komomo is so outgoing and confident, and I feel like he is trying to take her down a peg. I kind of understand why; like, she is a brat and all, but I just love that about her. Natsu just seems a little too evil for me too. His scenes just sort of left a bad taste in my mouth, though I won't really say much just yet. There seem to be a lot of secrets surrounding him, and hopefully, with time, his character will become for likable. On the other hand, I really liked the other male character, Yuri. I really like the idea of Komomo having an actual friend, and while Yuri has little quarks of his own, they are just so endearing and fun to watch. I look forward to see how the friendship between them develops because I really liked how it was starting out. Other than these three, there don't seem to be any more major characters. The plot is pretty simple; it's a reverse rags-to-riches story. While the story is very simple right now, I can tell there is going to be quite a few major plot points to look forward too. All of the jokes and dialogue are written pretty well, and I found myself eager to turn the next page with every panel I read. I really like how the romance between Komomo and Natsu is pretty tame right now. At most, he bit her ear and not in a romantic way really. I'd like to see this relationship develop a little slower than typical for a shojo series. I think Minami-san is really good about keeping the romance toned down. However, I would like a little more than we got in her other series, "Voice Over Seiyuu Academy."

Overall, I really enjoyed volume one of Komomo Confiserie. All of the elements were tied well together in a nice, frilly bow. However, the main man himself kept this from getting five stars. I was really just getting annoyed by him over and over again. I really hope I will be able to come to like his character. I look forward to when I get the chance to pick up the next volume.

At first I was like, what? I'm not really into food and it seemed so food-oriented. (Although the artwork of the desserts did make it look yummy. And I know you're probably thinking, "But Confiserie is in the title!" It was a gift! That I'm grateful to read.) Going into details about baked goods that I sort of skipped over. The artwork didn't take my breath away. And the beginning of the story was all over the place. However, it grew on me. It's charming. It's cute. By the end of this first volume I wanted to read more as both the artwork and story flow seemed to improve.

This was an okay book. I really like Komomo, and she's what made this book good for me. However, I don't like Natsu very much. To some extent, I get where he's coming from, and some of his behavior is justified, but he's unnecessarily mean. I like Yuri okay. I liked the last chapter of the volume, where Komomo dealt with bullying at her new school. It really showcased her character nicely, and is what makes me want to read more. The art is also very pretty, and I love the cover. I'm unsure if I will read more right now. 3 stars.

Ngl this was so funny and entertaining and I couldn’t stop reading for some reason. The art style is amazing but I had a hard time connecting with the characters.
We are following Komomo, she is a rich girl who lives in a mansion but her parents ignore her. She has a baker and this guy has a son, Natsu who komomo loves to torture and forces him to make her pastries and sweets all the time. The thing is that she loves natsus pastries, they made her feel warm and dizzy and even she cries when she eats them (that’s so dramatic but whatever).
Years later she loses everything:her mansion, the power, the money.. she is alone (her parents are nowhere to be seen and we don’t know what happened to them and what they are doing apart from ignoring their own child but ok) and now she is forced to work part time and enrole into a public HS.
Then natsu who was working in France and studying there goes back to Japan and they meet. Of course natsu wants revenge and he bullies her and tries to make her life impossible. I think natsu bullying was so mean and harmful. While I understand he was hurt and wants payback I think some of his thoughts are extremely unnecessary and it was uncomfortable to read especially given that komomo is a child and she just lost everything. There is a scene that rub me the wrong way where natsu tries to do a nice gesture to Komomo (by offering her pastries made by him) that turns out to be just a cruel act. He only wants to see her cry and he loves it. Komomo is scared and she runs away until she understands she doesn’t have any other option. By the end of the book Komomo learns a lot about working, earning money and what it means to have real friends (thanks to Yuri). I was amazed by her development and how she always stood up for herself even when natsu was giving her a hard time. She continued working hard and never gave up. In the last scene she apologizes to natsu for all the bullying she did to him in the past, but he doesn’t accept it saying she never hated him so it wasn’t bullying(????) . But still, even after that and after seeing Komomo apologizing he needs to get even and bites her in the ear like she used to do, because of course, she apologized but he couldn’t move on past that. I think he didn’t have any development and while Kokomo’s journey was amazing and well developed, Natsu stayed pretty much the same. He wants to be a successful baker and he works hard but he fails to move on in his relationship with Komomo.
Overall I want to continue the series bc it’s really short and I adore komomo as a character but I’m not a really big fan of the romance in this one

I wasn’t sure about this one when I started it & now after finishing it, I’m still not completely sure about this manga. It had it’s cute elements and was overall clean, but the story isn’t interesting enough for me to continue the series. Komomo was obviously spoiled, but she’s not so terrible that you’d dislike her. I think my main concern is with Natsu. He’s just...strange.

2 stars.

Content for Vol. 1-
Komomo says Natsu has become a demon when it comes to work; a mention of hell starting the next day; Komomo calls herself a shopping goddess;
Language: 1 darn, 1 wicked, 2 piss off, 1 stupid, 5 idiot;
Natsu says he’s been looking forward to bullying Komomo and making her cry; A mean girl decides to bully Komomo & spreads rumors about her;
Komomo thinks that Natsu must have a crush on her because he’s being mean to her (because that’s how it is in books); When Natsu pays Komomo back by biting her ear (like she used to do to him when they were little), she blushes; A couple mentions of flirting & being hit on; A mention of a hunk.

I’m surprised that I’ve really grown to like Minami Maki’s manga, having enjoyed Voice Over! (I’ve read the first chapter of S*A and watched maybe three or four episodes of the anime when it came out? I thought it was cute, but I ended up not finishing it because hiiii final semester of college.) So I was planning to at least check out Komomo Confiserie when the first volume came out last month.

I’m also fairly neutral on the entire tsundere trope. It’s something that I’ve heard other popular series in the last few years becoming fairly saturated with that relationship dynamic, but it hasn’t popped up as a constant feature in the various series that I’ve read and watched in the last couple of years. At the same time, if it’s handled well and the relationship is well-balanced, I do like it. And the same goes for the “spoiled rich girl/oujo brought low by Fate and has to learn to own up to her former prejudices and ideas”—that character type can be really abrasive and off-putting.

So coming into Komomo Confiserie, and being immediately introduced to the spoiled, pampered Komomo abusing her Designated Love Interest Natsu as a child, only to get her comeuppance years later, I can see people getting turned off by this series. But I grew to really like Komomo—despite her inability to keep a steady job due to her upbringing and attitude towards the world, and her forceful attitude towards people who would have been previous beneath her, Komomo does have a kindness to her, it’s just not portrayed as secretly having soft spot she’s embarrassed to have anyone knowing about. And I liked that she realizes this early on that she needs to starts shaping up and mature so that she can take care of herself. She doesn’t automatically “get it,” but I like that it’s a learning process for her. (I did like the sequence where Natsu sends her shopping and Komomo has no clue how to shop like normal people.)

I’m not as inclined to Natsu at first. Yes, his anger and “revenge” towards Komomo could be justified considering the hell she put him through when they were younger. But considering that we really haven’t seen much from Natsu and his side of the events, there’s more room for him to improve later on. (Again, see Designated Love Interest.) I liked that he’s willing to give her another chance and let her live at Meli Melo. I do like his friendship with Yuri (…Minami really likes her half-French supporting characters, doesn’t she.), and I like how Yuri is the bridge between Komomo and Natsu. (Obviously before they’re willing to admit their feelings for each other.)

It’s a standard and enjoyable first volume, and I like the potential of where this series is going to go. I liked the main plot of Komomo realizing her new place in the social hierarchy and trying adapt as best as she can to her situation, and I liked that she’s willing to try. (I mean, outside of complaining about all of this terrible work that’s been put upon her, don’t you know she’s not cut out for peasant work?) I liked Komomo dealing with the girls at her new school and the situation she finds herself in, because even though Komomo is still approaching it with her personality, it highlights the fact that she catches on a lot more than people assume she does. There’s a lot of set-up here for the future story arc and the blossoming romance between Komomo and Natsu, but the hitting of paces here is good. I really liked it, and I’m planning to pick up the rest of this series.

I don't think it's possible for me to like this story any less than I do right now. These are precisely the kind of spoiled, entitled characters that I hate in fiction. She's beyond annoying and always comes to the wrong conclusion, and his solution is to bully her and smile creepily when she does something he deems appropriate. No thanks. I'm done.

I'd actually like to give this 1.5 stars. I have a feeling that I would have loved this 10 years ago, now being 25, I find Komomo ridiculously annoying and just too stupid to function (which I'll admit is the point of her)

The art is lovely, and I loved all the deserts.

Actual Rating ** 3.5/5**

Off the bat I definitely prefer the darker/fantastical manga series to the contemporary/fluffy series. That being said I didn't dislike Komomo Confiserie. It's an easy, enjoyable and fun read. But it didn't have me on the edge of my seat the same way something like Tokyo Ghoul does.

No matter whether I'm watching anime or reading manga I always love seeing and reading about the food they eat. Reading a manga set in a Confiserie was wonderful, everything always looked so incredible. And now I really want to try tea with rose jam in it.

I adore the illustrations in this series. The clothes, buildings, everything - they're so detailed. A lot of the clothing looks very Parisian...there is an awful lot of bows and I'm all for it.

The message behind the novel irked me a little. Komomo was awful to Natsu when they were children. Simply, because she was able. She came from a then wealthy family and he was the son of their chef. Now, years later, Komomo has lost her fortune and ends up working for Natsu. Who treats her horrendously in revenge. Two wrongs don't make a right. It made for entertaining reading but the message was just so wrong. As a result of this I felt very disassociated from the characters. The only person I liked was Yuri and he got angry when anyone took his food. Honestly, I relate to that.

Series Rating: *3.5 Stars*

This was a sweet romance (no pun intended). The series is five books long, so it's a pretty quick read from start to finish, but it's also light and entertaining, and incredibly clean. Komomo, our heroine, spends the whole series discovering who she is and what the real world outside of her pristine mansion is like, and learns to stand up for herself and care for herself in the process, rather than having to rely solely on the efforts of others.

The real star of this book is the artwork. The author demonstrates a real knowledge of French patisserie, and renders the food in beautiful detail. While the story is a romance at its heart, the food is really the centerpiece of the plot, and it was so fun to see a story set in a French sweet shop in Japan.

Reader's Advisory Note** The loves in this series are not deep or nuanced, but they are cute and amazingly clean, making them suitable for middle school (and probably younger!) readers. Idk if I even remember kissing in this series, making it a very safe (if a tad boring) romance overall.

I was just thinking "haha the side bars are kinda similar to this other manga I've read but I don't remember which one that was" but IT'S S.A. SPECIAL A, I LITERALLY AM IN THE MIDDLE OF READING IT RIGHT NOW LMAO, I just finished volume three a week ago! This manga was written by the same author! The vibe is very similar, it's another enemies-to-lovers/power-dynamics/guy-teasing-girl kind of love story. I'm into it! I love a good tease.

At first I didn't have a good grasp of Komomo's personality, I couldn't figure out if she was a bully or a queen or a sweet innocent bab, but by the end of the volume I feel like I understand her a bit better. Same with Natsu tbh.

I own two more volumes so I'm gonna read them soonish. I wonder how long this series will end up being? I don't expect to want to read all of it, but this volume was fun, at the very least.

I do have a question though: how are these kids going to high school and running a business at the same time at 16 years old I do not understand

Being a quick read for me, I didn't anticipate that the first volume would hold so much about the MC. I felt as though I learned much depth of a character I deemed snotty right off the bat. While I wasn't intrigued by the MC during the first chapter, I went along with the story because of my sighting of French confections and macarons (I'll always be a sucker for those). By the end, I saw a lot more than just another dead-weight, cranky girl. She has a good heart, just not equipped properly by her parents to take on the world. And that's great because later I read how the people around her inspire her to grow as a person (even if those examples aren't what people would deem "appropriate"). I find myself at the end of this book impressed by the first volume, and anticipating the next (it's just a shame that the library doesn't have all five volumes!)
My verdict: this story would be great for tweens and teens alike as a sort of baking, coming-of-age, and quirky fun read!

Huzzah! My third DNF of the year and my first one star! Halfway in, I saw no possible way for this to get better. It just kept getting worse and worse. There was a WEBTOON I used to read, with a the exact same problem this manga had that made me put it down. The mmc likes to make her cry. Now that’s just fucking weird and it’s one of those bookish things I can’t appreciate or get behind in any sense. If I tried to explain this to anyone I’d probably get stuck on loop saying “wtaf” over and over again because that’s all that is able to come to my mind when it comes to this. This series should never have been written, and I never thought I’d find myself saying that yet here we are. If this wasn’t a library book I’d be burning this shit to ash because this needs to go straight to fucking jail.

This was such a fast read! I read it in one day. It is really cute and I love the idea of it. All of the foods and confectionaries in here look amazing, and the art is some of the best I've seen in manga in my opinion because it wasn't hard to read. I loved Komomo, her character development was great. I had a problem with her relationship with Natsu. It felt a little abusive and very male dominant, but she is such a strong girl. I liked Natsu though. I feel like I need more from their relationship and more needs to be explained. I also feel like the last chapter in this volume was a little out of place. We went from Natsu's shop to school and the transition was very random. I did like this a lot though, and I will continue on with the series but I'm in no rush to do so.

ive never been so conflicted. i really enjoyed it, but was also so uncomfortable. in the beginning it was komomo because she was just relentlessly bullying this poor kid. but after the tables turn, he's also horrendous to her. i sort of get it, the revenge thing. but for some reason the way the word bullying is used by natsu made me really uncomfortable. like he takes pleasure in seeing her suffer, though he knows that's not how it was to her in their childhood, which just makes it super creepy. but im hooked, ive heard you get more insight later.

A very rich girl treats the son of a servant very badly as kids. Then as they get older, roles are reversed. The boy, now a world famous pastry chef has all the cards, and the girl has only what she can earn. It's a rude awakening where the initial trope seems to be boy trying to torture girl for her past ways and falling for her all the same.

Right now I'm having a hard time connecting to either character, but I see glimmerings to where this can be a cute manga series. Will keep reading to see what happens next, but I don't have the highest hopes even if there's a lot of cuteness.

The art is cute, but the characterization is bizarre, even by shoujo standards. Sure, Komomo was outright cruel to Natsu when they were younger, to the point of biting his ear if he didn't produce pastries on demand. But that wasn't bullying! Because she's too naive to really bully anyone! Even if any of this made sense, the characters are just plain unpleasant people that I don't want to read about.

Excerpt -- Possibly the Funniest Author Sidebar Ever
Since this story involves confectioners, I got to take lots of photos of pastry shops and vocational schools for bakers, as well as listen to all sorts of stories having to do with sweets.
That means I got to eat lots of sweets under the guise of research. It made me fat. Both my arms are like thighs now. They feel nice and soft to the touch.

This was a little meh for me.

I can't really not like the female lead because she was mean as a 5-year-old. Sorry I'm not hating on an actual child.

That's why I sympathise with her and don't really like how the story's going. I hope it improves in the next volume or two though because I love the artist.
