Alexander Henry Cherry OBE, Commander Royal Navy, Retired.
Alex Cherry was an American Wall Street banker (Hall, Cherry, Wheeler & Co.) who joined the Royal Navy as a RNVR officer prior to the US entering WW2. He served on convoy duty during the Battle of the Atlantic, was later transferred to anti-submarine warfare duties and eventually became British Naval Liaison Officer in Bremen during the Occupation after the war.
Alexander Cherry was a Wall Street banker living in New York when he decided to do his bit while America was still neutral and join the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as an officer. He wrote this account shortly after the war and what you find in these pages is a humorous take on his service mostly in the Battle of the Atlantic on small ships, where he focuses mostly on the traditions of the service and life in the wardroom with his fellow officers. It is an entertaining read of an American who joined the less glamourous service (versus the RAF) in a very unforgiving theatre.
