Continuing the Darkworld series with Walking Shadow.
Life isn't any safer for Ash now that she has found out that she can see into the Darkworld and can see demons, who, for some reason or another, seem to be really interested in attacking her. Together with her friends she has to endure more adventures at the Blackstone University.
It was easy to continue the series, it was only a week or so after the first book. Luckily for me, there was not too much of a recap since everything was still quite fresh in my head. Even if it has been a longer while, I think you'll be able to get all the details straight quite fast.
There was a little sigh from my sight at the first mention of vampires (are the werewolves next?) but the vampires were no ordinary vampires. A bit confusing though since they keep calling them vampires. Like in the first book, the mystery isn't that much of a mystery but it's nice to read about Ash, Claudia, Leo and the others. I would like to find out exactly what happened to Berenice.
It's another easy and fast read (I finished it in a couple of hours). Next up is the third (and at this moment newest) book in the series.

Walking Shadow is a fast paced and fun book. It had been a while since I read the first book in this series, but there was enough recap to remind me what happened nad get em back into the story again. There's some mystery plot going on, there are multiple things, but it felt like one plot. One thing I missed was the opportunity for side plots Everything seems connected and even though it doesn't make sense at first it seemed part of the same thing. While there seems to be some overarching plot as well, the individual plot in the novels seems to mostly overshadow that one so far. Walking Shadow is a well written book though and the mystery and fast pace kept me turning the pages and wondering what would happen next and how it was all connected.
I am not a fan of zombies in book and while these had an original twists it still wasn't my favourite part of the book. The whole thing with the doppelganger, shapeshifter, ghoul thing was a bit weird as well and the many different terms could be a bit confusing. Although I did like the twist at the end concerned about it. The plot is a bit predictable, but it was still fun to read.
I did like how while there was a lot going on it still gave the feeling there was homework and school stuff going on as well, it didn't take over the plot, but there were small hints here and there that still gave the idea that normal school life kept happening as well.
This series has a fun cast of characters and while I like them I always wish we could a little bit more insight into their character. We did learn a bit more about Leo in this book and his guardian, which was fun, although I still felt it difficult to really feel like I know him. I liked having read the novella as it gave me a bit more insight into Claudia and why she uses that fan for example. Berenice and Howard always seem a bit elusive and would love to read a novella from her point of view once. And then there's Conrad, he was a bit of an annoying character and then at the end, yeah that was weird. I do like the fortune teller, I like how mysterious she is and how she helps the characters.
There was some romance, but it's so little it was a bit off. I would've preferred for it not to be there at all or given a bit more attention as I wasn't feeling the romance.
There's some nice pieces of new world building in this book, but it's really subtle and then there's a talk towards the end at which some nice tidbits are revealed. I still like the whole idea of the Darkworld it's really original, although it's a bit hard to get a good grip on what is possible, with the magic and demons and what the limits are.
To conclude: this was a fun, fast paced and enjoyable story. The focus is mostly on the main plot and there aren't many subplots, but it kept my interest and I wanted to keep reading. The plot is a bit predictable at times. There is a fun cast of characters, although I wish we would get to know them all better. What I Thought of Walking Shadow:
Love. Just utter love for this series! It has everything I could every want and is so addicting. I am counting the days and hours to the release...seriously.
I loved where Walking Shadow took us in the series. There were so many changes, additions and revalations, not to mention -action, magic, maybe some love and a mysterious fortune teller!
After the finish of Darkness Watching, I was completely amped to see where the story went. I was worried for some characters, particularly Ash, I wanted to know more about Claudia and Berenice and Oh! was that a little love from Leo? So many questions unanswered and so much on the brink of exploding in the Darkworld.
A few questions, particularly about Claudia and Berenice, were answered in Fear's Touch (a Darkworld novella), but I needed to know where the 'sinners' were headed. With this book, we learn that the magic world is more than we first thought. We see the entrance of vampires - ugh, typical...oh wait! These vamps are NOTHING like the vamps we've read about before. It was brill to see a fantasy staple in the story, but with a major twist. I loved what Adams did with the Darkworld Series vamps, but I shall not say more, as it is an important part of the story! Just trust me, it's new and exciting.
As Ash finds herself in the middle of a world that is ever changing, exciting and under threat from the Demon's world, we see her and the whole crew grow and become a major part in the future of the world. The only question is, will Ash choose the right side, or damn the world to the demons?
I loved the demon Ash and the way she manipulated the world. It not only showed just what can happen when a foe takes your face to commit crimes, but also the strength of demons. From there we , finally, get a glimpse into the real fortune teller, or at least we think we do...
I was completely engrossed in every word that Adams had written on the pages of Walking Shadow. I found myself up late many a night, unable to put down my iPad, as I had to read one more page. I needed to know what happened. With the action, blossoming emotions and the secrets, this demon infested, fantasy story was one of the most brilliant stories I have read in a long time. I see this series becoming VERY popular. It would make an excellent film!
Overall, addicting, engrossing, unputdownable and truly a brilliant read. I highly highly recommend reading this book and the entire series. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would!

I was so pleased to get Ash’s second adventure, especially when I discovered it was just as exciting as the first. In addition to all the great details about Darkworld, demons, and Ash’s rare birthright and powers that the author brought to life in the first book, there are even more mysteries and dangers in this new book.
The Venators come under fire when one of their number goes rogue. But they won’t admit it and suspect Ash and her companions, who remain outsiders of official Venator ranks. No matter where Ash turns there’s trouble—murdered vampires, ghouls tearing up cemeteries and making off with dead bodies, and a diabolical girl who looks just like Ash and seems to appear and disappear at will. The only one are their side is the fortune teller who tries to protect them. But she’s hiding secrets as well, and even her powers may not be enough to vanquish an evil magic user who’s raising the dead!
I loved all the characters, and the plot twists and turns kept me glued to the pages. Highly recommended.

Received a complimentary copy to read and review. Another great installment of the DarkWorld series. I couldn’t put it down. Great characters and love the world that has been created. Great twists and turns that will keep readers turning the page. Readers who love YA urban fantasy will want to read to add it and the rest of the books in the series to their TBR list. I look forward to reading more of Emma’s books.

I wish I could sit here and rave & rave about this story, but if we're being honest then I'd have to admit I have very little to say about this story. Ashlyn was a good protagonist, just as she was in the previous book. I love that she's a realistic blend of 'relatable book-loving student' and 'I have powers, I can kick some demons' butts if I want to'. She's not the most kickass fantasy protagonist, but she doesn't need to be. She has her friends, her team, and together they have enough magical oomph to protect themselves. And when you think about it, Ahslyn shouldn't really be that kickass. She just discovered her powers and she hasn't had much instruction into how to channel and use them... and that isn't even taking in the fact that no one really understands why she has ice powers, so she doesn't really have anyone to teach her in the first place.
But moving on:
• I loved that this story had me guessing the whole time. There was never I time that I thought oh yep, I know what's going to happen next. The plotline was twisty enough to impress me. I was engaged the whole time. I wanted to know more about the ghouls and what this doppelganger was all about it. It fast-paced and never dull, which is always a plus!
• The time spent building up Leo and Ash's friendship was great. There's obviously some tension between them (which shall be acted on later in the series...?) and it was nice that there was obvious attention paid to building up their friendship before any of that happens.
• It was interesting learning more about the Venantium and Darkworld lore. The doppelganger demon-child thing was creepy, but I want to know more about Ash's Demon Heart.
Overall? I did enjoy this instalment slightly more than Darkness Watching, but there needs to be some sort of overarching plot across the next few books in the series. The feel too 'standalone' at the moment with nothing (other than the obvious characters and Darkworld lore) tying the stories together. Something scary and evil needs to be chased down or something over the last three books. I'm excited to see where the story will head though, and I will definitely be picking up the sequel as soon as I can.

Walking Shadow
U enjoyed the second as much as the first and will be starting the third tonight. The characters are well developed and grow. The story is a bit different but a fun page turner.

Good second book.
This followed in the same style as the first being a fairly steady story with some moderate highs and lows in action but not really nail biting. Very enjoyable.

I very much enjoyed reading this sequel to Darkness Watching. I found Ashlyn easy to continue relating to and it was nice to see her interacting with her friends... though I could definitely understand how hard it must have been to juggle her two separate lives.
I felt a bit sorry for Conrad, even though I did think he was acting a bit like a stalker. I felt a bit sorry for Ash to have to try and deal with him... even though I think that was something else piled up on everything that was going on with her.
I have to be honest... I came very close to rolling my eyes when vampires were mentioned straight away. If demons are over-used in fiction, vampires are even more so... and that was before they sparkled. But it was good to see that the vampire curse was something entirely different to the myths that were perpetuated. I thought it was a unique twist to have it be that way... though it would have been good to see more of an explanation as to how the curse was passed on.
I was disappointed to still not see much of a brotherly relationship between Cyrus and Leo... though I did like seeing Leo and Ash interacting together. The love triangle wasn't really much of one, so I could tolerate the two guys being romantically interested in Ash.
I did feel a bit sorry for one of the bad guys in this book. Even though I wouldn't say that this person could have been redeemed, I think it would have been good to see a possibility with them. It sounded like they'd had a rough life.
There wasn't much of a mystery in this book... it was kind of obvious who the bad guy was fairly early on. I didn't really like Claudia in this book as much as the first, since she seemed to be seducing other characters just to get information.
Berenice and Howard are... interesting characters. I'm not sure what I think about them. I did think there were a lot of members of the Venantium who weren't really shown... it was like a lot of them were the red shirts.
I did enjoy seeing Ash and her friends. I have the third book on my Kindle and will be reading it in the next couple of days.

Walking Shadow was an awesome sequel and it's name was so true. I thoroughly enjoyed the new characters, the new paranormal beings and all the drama that ensued. Emma Adams is simply brilliant in her writing. Excited to read the rest of the series!
Ashlyn was much more bold in this sequel. She did manage to come out of her shell and become assertive. She learned way more than she wanted about who and what she is. She found out who she was descended from which blew my mind! She handled everything with such grace. Ashlyn definitely knows how protect those she loves which was awesome. I felt bad that she was a target, I hope nothing goes wrong within the next few series. I couldn't bare for her to die.
Leo was absolutely awesome. I love how he doesn't take things too seriously. He tries to enjoy life. That kiss in the grave was absolutely perfect! He got so many points for that. I'm so happy that the bond and relationship between him and Ashlyn didn't full take place until the end...that made their whole interaction much more awesome.
Madame Persephone is so cryptic that I don't know whether to trust her or not. I really wonder if she is the mother of Ashlyn because she knows too much about her. I like her, but I'm still weary of her. Bernice is rather annoying. I don't get what her issue is with Ashlyn. I mean up until the end when she found out the truth about Ash, the hostility she had towards her was uncalled for. Bernice is a major pain in the butt.
Jude -- I mean really -- he needs to die! He has been so evil since the novella and it's aggravating! He keeps getting away with everything. I don't get why the Venantium keeps allowing him to just be. They need to kill him! The Venantium are cowards. I don't like them at all. The Dark Child was seriously insane. Taking the form of Ash as a doppelganger was creepy and I mean she was powerful beyond words. I wonder if the Dark Child was one of the Blackstones -- just one of my theories.

I was hooked to this series after reading the first book. The setting was Gothic, urban and just plain captivating.
In the second book, ash has figured out a few things and is trying to lead a normal life. But things aren't that simple when you're part demon and it can only get complicated when a doppelganger is seen haunting the place. The secret society does some more things together and everyone has a larger role to play in this book compared to the last. Or maybe the characters evolved enough for me to notice them over Ash. The romance is still a little patchy. I can only hope it gets better in the next one.
The only disconnect overall is the love sick vampire. The book is a fast read and I'm already started on the third as I really can't seem to stay away from the dark world.
In the second book, ash has figured out a few things and is trying to lead a normal life. But things aren't that simple when you're part demon and it can only get complicated when a doppelganger is seen haunting the place. I tried, I really tried but could not get further than half way, after putting it down time after time.
I bought these 5 books basd on The Changeling, Celestial Magic (favourite), The Thief’s Talisman. I had a similar issue with The Legacy Flame series but am enjoying The Gatekeepers’s Curse.
I did not check the published dates of these books but think they must some of Emma’s earlier works.
I will pick it up again in a month or two but then Celestial Magic 4 will take precedent
Finally finshed it after 2 months of stalling and I gave it an additional star for filling in the blanks.

Still On My Toes
I started this series last week and I've just finished the second book. This book series has kept me on the edge of my seat. Cannot wait to start the third book!
