Embracing the unexpected can lead to all sorts of adventures.
Resonance Mates, Book 5
The prophesied time has arrived ... and
Harry, born of an alien Alvian mother - Mara 12 - and a human father - Justin O'Hara - and forever caught between two very separate worlds .... must journey to the top of the world to unlock a mysterious ship found trapped in an icy crevasse. A ship only someone of Harry’s bloodline can open.
Roshin, a young Alvian scribe - member of the clandestine sect of Zxerah operatives - is sent to record events as they unfold. Beneath her remote, icy beauty, Harry feels an unwanted hum of attraction. He has always dreamed of a warm, giving relationship with a human. Not a cold, emotionless Alvian.
Then there’s Cormac, an Alvian scientist and soldier, a man at odds with himself at times, but who knows what he wants when he sees it ... an officer sent to head the expedition.
When all three are trapped inside the vessel, Harry is confronted with an unexpected dilemma ... cling to his dream of a human bond, or answer the call of fate and form a life-long alliance with not just one, but two aliens.
Warning: Harry’s all grown up and ready for action ... with not one but two Alvians. Theirs could be a permanent ménage relationship that will resonate in your heart long after the last page is turned.
Note: This book is intended for mature audiences. It is a ménage romance, with explicit love scenes set in a possible future where aliens have taken over the Earth. --- The Resonance Mates series consists of: 1. Hara’s Legacy 2. Davin’s Quest 3. Jaci’s Experiment 4. Grady’s Awakening 5. Harry’s Sacrifice
Bianca D'Arc is the USA Today bestselling author of over 100 romance titles. She has been published traditionally, by a few notable small presses, and indie. Before becoming a full-time writer, she ran a laboratory, a legal department, and jetted around the country on business while working for a Fortune 500 engineering firm.
On one hand, I have been waiting a long time for Harry's story and the resolution of the human/Alvian arc. Issues are resolved and Harry finds love, yay!
On the other, a lot of story was packed into this volume and I think it suffered for it. In previous installments, a lot of time was spent on one aspect of the problem of the Alvian invasion of earth and its effect on one person and the one(s) they resonate with. I understood the problem and really felt I knew the characters and why they fell in love.
I got told instead of shown a lot in this book and I have a hard time deciding if I believe in it.
Love this series! scifi alien menage mfm. great story and world building. Love the characters throughout this entire series. Hoping there are more to come set in this world.
2.5 stars — Well, that was seriously underwhelming. Bummer. I knew there had been a LONGGGGG break between publishing the 4th book and this final book, and apparently the author went through some personal challenges in between time. But this book felt like an author writing just because it was requested, and putting in the minimal effort to give the readers a conclusion. It was like she looked at her notes and just sort of wrote that stuff, but without any elaboration or tension or, you know, the stuff that makes a book compelling. It was like a summary.
I mean, okay, it wasn’t that bad. But everything happened SUPER easily for the characters, without any strife or concern or again, tension. Tension is so important! It was like, okay, so wake the ancients, they have a plan, they’re worried about things going wrong, they execute the plan, nothing goes wrong…in fact, everything goes super right and it’s all easy and done. *sigh* Boring.
I still enjoy the world this author built, I still enjoyed the concepts, but after reading the build up, I was bummed that I didn’t get everything I was hoping from it. There were hints about General Yeager in the previous book, and he had a minimal mention, so the author dropped whatever plot line that was going to be. For all the time we spent in everyone else’s heads instead of Harry/Roshin/Cormac, I still didn’t get my happy ending for Bill (because he totally should resonate with Ruth). I didn’t get to find out about Callie’s baby, it’s like that stopped existing. We never got to see glowing crystals and the final resonance tests really after Jaci’s book.
It just wouldn’t have taken much for the author to have done a LOT better. Then we come to Harry. Harry was prophesied in BOOK ONE that he would have this hard life and was going to go through something horrible…which I guess was living amongst the emotionless Alvians?? And the book is CALLED Harry’s Sacrifice…and you know what his sacrifice was? Not getting human mates. Ugh. He held on to that wayyyyyy too long. The three together were okay. I liked Roshin and Cormac.
Hara and Percival were pretty funny, but they were the epitome of Deus Ex Machina.
And even aside from all my complaints from above? It also needed to be re-edited, because there was a ton of repetition — like the same exact conclusions would be made 2 chapters later…like the author forgot she’d already made those discoveries/conclusions.
OK, I’m going to have to lower the rating. Apparently I was crankier than I thought. I’ll still give it a round up boost, but I don’t even know why. I’m just going to go with the gut.
Harry is such a conflicted man. His conflicts really tie into the whole series and how humans and Alvirans are in conflict. Ro and Cormac are not as well rounded in this book but they are still good matches for Harry. They make him stretch himself emotionally where he had closed himself off.
Not as good as earlier one I read. Seemed a little hollow, which is ironic considering Harry was the hybrid. And we never find out about his mom. Too much wrapping up of series arcs, not enough of the central relationship. No epilogue, which seems like a lost opportunity given this was the fifth book.
I really enjoyed this series. This final book, while good, was more about finishing the bigger story and sadly not as much about Harry and his mates. I’d love to have seen more secondary character stories within this and more of the building relationship with Harry and of course the Ancients. A longer book would have been better IMHO.
What a great conclusion to this series! I loved finally getting to know Harry’s story and discovering how he fulfilled his destiny! This whole series was such a unique take and created such an amazing world. I know I’ll be revisiting it often.
I have waited a number of years for this story and I am glad to say I wasn’t disappointed. While the majority of the story is about setting the Alvian back on the right track there is plenty of story for Harry and his triad. While I might have been disappointed the Harry was so resistant to accepting an Alvian as his mate I understand why it happened. It must have been very hard for Harry to grow up with a mother that didn’t know how to love him. I have always been glad that he had the O’Hara family to provide the love and stability that he needed to be the man he has become. I didn’t realize until reading the earlier books again that Harry had a fairly powerful gift of precog. It seems he inherited most of the gifts that O’Hara family had which means those gifts breed true through the line.
This story is the turning point for the humans that the Alvians have been hunting and experimenting on for several decades. If you have read the earlier books you know that Caleb and Harry have been working toward this place for years. I was surprised to read about the frozen people that Harry needed to find. To have some of the original explores alive in stasis was a huge surprise. I was fun to read how these men saw the world and how much they had learned while they were in stasis. While I have had little use for the Alvians in the earlier stories I was glad to see that there might be a solution to the decline. I was hoping that we would finally see Mara 12 take the gene therapy that would restore emotion. I had hoped that she would finally understand what Harry and his family had gone through all these years. I also loved that the humans were finally able to mount a force to show the Alvians that they may have been down but we hadn’t given up the will to fight for what we believed in.
Any of us that have read the series have gotten to know Harry O’Hara. He has grown into a surprisingly power psychic and is full of compassion and courage. He has stayed in the city so that Caleb O’Hara has someone to talk to as well as a way to communicate with the family. Harry does have some of the Alvian physical traits but for the most part he looks like the O’Haras. It would have been nice to see more of the family in this story but there is so much going on I am not sure where the author could have fit it in. I liked in the beginning and I still like him.
Roshin 72 is a member of the Zxerah and she has been placed on the new Councilors staff so she can supply information to the Patriarch. She is quiet and unassuming and very obedient. However there is a core of steel to her and she is very passionate once she takes the gene therapy. She is wiser than her follow Alvian mainly because she was raised in the Brotherhood by human parents. One other thing is that she is a skilled fighter. I was glad to see that she was willing to stand up Harry and tell him how she felt and demand that he open his eyes and heart to see what they could be together.
The final player in this triad is Cormac 7. Cormac is a warrior and a scientist. He has been exploring the human cities that were destroyed in the bombardment. He has a curious and open mind. He is the first to recognize that Harry and Roshin hum. I think in many ways he was the one that was the most open to sharing Roshin. Cormac is also intelligent enough to see that things are wrong with the Alvians and that change has to be made.
There is quite a lot going on in this story. Things move toward the beginnings of a resolution to brewing conflict between the Alvians and the humans. It is interesting to see what one great man can do to bring about major change to a people that haven’t changed in centuries. I am hoping that this isn’t the final book in this series. I would still love to see a story for Bill, Sam and Ruth as well as stories for finding the remaining ancients.
Harry's sacrifice is the fifth novel on the Resonance Mates series. This series must be read in order to understand completely the universe created by the author. I had read the previous books when they came out and enjoyed them greatly, but having been 4 years since the last book came out I found myself disconnected from the story. Don't get me wrong, the author explained the reasons behind it (sad to hear what happened) and I completely understand it but I am mentioning this because if you read the books long time ago and you have the time, I really believe you would enjoy this last installment more if you re-read them before tackling this one.
The book is great when it comes to the story between the Alvians and Humans. So many things were explained and it was like reading a history book about how a revolution is developed and things are changed. On that account I would give this book 5 stars.
What was lacking for me in this book is the romance . We had already met Harry on previous books so somehow we already had a relationship with this character. His mates, however are new to our universe and even though their paper is so important to the revolution the romance between them was nearly non existent. I wouldn't give the romance side of the story more than 2 stars.
This wasn't a bad book but it wasn't a great book. It was a fitting conclusion to the set the author planned for but left the world open to either not books later on or a spinoff that takes place even further in the future. What I truly didn't care for was the peace of the book. It felt very rushed to me. Almost as if the long break between the forth and fifth books was because the author switched gears for other novels and only came back to finish this because date couldn't leave it unfinished. Not to mention there were numerous times that the author would take a few moments to describe something, be it feelings, reactions, or a scene setup, and then a few pages later, she would do out again. I had way to many moments where my thought was, "okay, you already said that" which left me feeling frustrated. If you've read the first four books, definitely pick this one up a it nicely concludes the current story arc. If you're debating picking up this book, make sure you've read the first four otherwise it won't make a lot of sense!
I loved this book and have been looking forward to its release. Exciting throughout and full of adventure and sexual tension, though the ending stopped it from getting that 5th star. And i'll admit it is for slightly selfish reasons. I just found that the ending of the book was too abrupt, and so many things I expected to happen didn't. Celeb wasn't reunited with Jane and his brothers. We never saw Sam reunited with the woman he loves or meet his daughter. And so many other things I had hoped to see in this book never took place. But saying that I keep my fingers crossed that Bianca will continue this series and give us all the HEA's of the many other characters we met along the way in this fantastic journey she has lead us on through this series. There were hints that this might happen (Celebs words to Ronin) and I hope that it happens as this is one world I don't want to let go of. I'll just have to read them all over again and keep reliving them until she does :)

Brought together a conclusion/resolution that was detailed & did not feel rushed. Enjoyable little historical quirks...like Easter eggs. Lots of opportunity for more in the series. Let me just say that I hate when a story (book, movie, etc) ends at the climax...when the journey is only beginning. For a little while, I thought, since this was the "last" book, Ronin would find his mate among the prisoners; since he did not, I'm expecting the story! I have found this series to be better than average...though it did not propel me to 5* status before now. The 5* is for the non-violent, non-villianous, minimal drama, yet still fascinating coup. I cannot say the same for the "Rom" part of the story. But it's always been the fascinating SF aspect that had me so intrigued, with a little naughty menage.
There are a few authors whose books I follow and even fewer series. This is one of them. I have been looking forward to this book for a very long time and I was not disappointed. A couple of other authors I love are Anne Bishop, Kelley Armstrong and Karen Marie Moning. They also have great stories to tell. I have nothing against romance novels but I find as I get older I prefer it if my books have it as a side and not the main course. It makes for more interesting characters and worlds they reside in. Anyone who likes fantasy with sci-fi and a nice dash of romance will enjoy this series. Although the threesomes may take some getting used to.
I was a little disappointed with this one. There was a lot of telling rather then showing, weeks passed in a sentence and significant events were described in less then a paragraph. Lots of this happened, then that happened, with no depth. Harry's relationship with Ro and Cormac was just a sideline and harry was kinda a jerk, this was disappointing as i was really looking forward to his story. I was still glad to have read the book and i was happy with the way the story ended, a few loose ends though.
Harry's Sacrifice was good...in the author's typical style. Which is to say, tons of repetition and cliche, lots of telling instead of showing. The last chapter read like a history text instead of a novel. But the plot was very interesting, and kept me reading. I didn't get bored. I hope to read more in the series.
I had not read the four previous books and found this hard to get to like as a standalone. Too much complex background and conversations and not enough action.
Those who have read the previous books will probably get on much better with this SF romance but I prefer the author's Dragon Warrior books.
I waited for what felt like forever and it was worth the wait. I am hoping for ay least one more book to tie up some details. Actually I just have a hope to see these characters futures. The romance in this book is hot, hot,hot as well as tender and soul deep.
I really enjoyed this book & will now have to go back & read the others in this series. I loved watching Harry come to realize that he could love an Alvian even though he was determined she was going to be human.
