Kishibe Rohan, a genius manga-ka who created his first bestselling manga series at age 16, is now on a serial of quests to find inspiration for his works. Kishibe is an artist who would give his all for his art (for example, he would spend his entire fortune to buy a huge piece of woodland just in order to draw the background of his ghost manga series), and he also possesses supernatural power named Heaven's Gate, which allows him to 'read' people like reading an open book.

On his quests for finding new inspiration, he encounters a cursed billionaire and a revengeful spirit hellbent on collecting his blood debt, a heiress who accidentally killed her lover and things only became even weirder for her afterward, the mystery of the villas of the super-riches deep in the mountains, and much, much more.

It's a delight to see how Kishibe Rohan managed to save his own skin (and a few other's) by using his supernatural power and most of the stories are cheerful to read.

I am not very familiar with Hirohiko Araki's manga but I can see the guy always have some surprising and tricky ideas up his sleeve, for example, the mystery of the villas of the super-riches, I really couldn't see this one coming.

The artwork is rich with details and everyone just pretty much looks, poses and dressed like supermodels and I'm saying it in a good way, hahah. I heard that Araki had worked for a clothing design company before he started working on manga? That isn't much of a surprise.

Although honestly I'm not exactly a fan of Araki's artwork because....there are too many details stuffing the panels full, I guess?

This spinoff was quite bizarre. It features Rohan who we are introduced in part four, Diamond is Unbreakable. There is four short stories following the famous manga artist. This volume covers At a Confessional to Poaching a Seashore. Only the first three stories were adapted into in an anime spin off. So reading the last one was a surprised.

These stories really felt like something out of the twilight zone. The “Mutsu-kabe Hill” episode was probably the most horror like and disturbing. It had such a strong telltale-heart undertones to it. Although, I think my favorite had to be “Millionaire Village.”

I also found it cute that Rohan had a sailor moon collection.

The art is so stunning in my opinion. There is a such a focus on the fine details. Also, the clothing designs Ararki designs are always so stunning. We can talk about the cover design for this volume? It really is absolutely gorgeous.

I love small details Ararki includes. Like in the last few pages, you just see a glimpse Josuke’s head turned away from the reader. Small cameos with the characters from part four really put a smile on face.

Anyways, Rohan was one of my favorite characters from part four. Reading the first spin off volume was a treat. I look forward to reading volume two. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Or just for an interesting, supernatural read.

While familiarity with Araki's Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is helpful here, the stories do speak for themselves. Each of the four is a vaguely folkloric mystery, with at least two playing directly into themes familiar from fairy tales, such as the person who never quite learns his lesson and the old saw about being careful what you wish for. Araki's art is as outrageous as always, but the pulpy nature of both text and image really work, giving this the feel of old 1970s post-Code American horror comics in their plots and execution. It's a good time all around, and very much recommended, whether you're a Jojo's fan or not.

Series review

Really loved this short series and I read them all in one sitting at the gym on a bike :^)

The series stars Rohan Kishibe and his misadventures. Each edition is episodic with some of the most bizzare stands and encounters in the jojo series. Very short and sweet and is a great representation of what makes the jojo series so fun.

The art at times seems alittle rushed compared to the main series but the story more than made up for this.

Rohan has always been a favorite character of mine - While he is incredibly strong willed and self assured he is not without flaws. He comes off as an art/fashion snob and is generally pretty sassy and i love it.

I'd recommend this to anyone who has read the jojo series or is interested in reading but only wants to sample what it's about.

My favorite was definitely "At a confessional". I loved it and I loved the animated version too.
I really enjoy reading more about Rohan!

Update after rereading: I think I liked it even more than the first time. It's been a while since I last read/watched anything related to Jojo, so this made me realize how much I missed it. Plus, Rohan is one of my favorite characters, which made everything even better. I think "At a confessional" remains my favorite!

While I’m reading it digitally and can’t see the last chapter with Gucci, this is an amazing collection of short stories! I’ve only read the first arc of Jojo’s, but these stories were still wonderful!

Why y'all hating on my boy Koichi? His lips are so soft and supple, you could easily deflate 'em if you poked it with something sharp. I see beautiful pools of ocean water when I look into his alarmingly large eyes. And to top it all off, his tiny gremlin face has the radiance of being stung by several hundred bees. Show my man (or child???) some respect.

If you didn't already know, the OVA was just released. As expected, it's incredibly ugly and has uninspired sound design. But if you're a die-hard Rohan fan like me, that doesn't really matter. You can watch Millionaire Village at https://youtu.be/fP8ZwFtbgDw. The subs aren't great, but I recommend you watch it soon. I guarantee it will be taken down within a matter of hours.

I've tried multiple times to get into the Jojo universe. This was a successful one.

I loved the power of this main character, and the tongue-in-cheek approach to Manga editing and creating process was very humorous. Overall, a very fun read.

A collection of short stories involving Rohan. Hirohiko can really make a story about anything AND make it insanely interesting. I am not a big fan of short stories but I really enjoyed this and I love how sassy Rohan can get. lol

Okay. So. I know of Jojo's Bizarre Adventures. I have not read the manga nor seen the anime because there's just so much of it that it's intimidating to start reading or collecting it.

Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe is incredibly accessible in comparison. And as someone who doesn't know anything about Jojo except "But it was me! DIO!" I can say with confidence that this spinoff is successfully self-reliant. You can read this first and not need to know anything about the Stands. I mean, it would probably be helpful to know what Stands are and why people have them, but you don't need it for this manga.

This volume at least is a collection of short stories from Rohan's life as a mangaka. He does a lot of Jojo-typical outlandish things for research, like buying six whole mountains and going dead broke from it just to preserve the spirit of a yokai rumored to live there. So he could research it for a story.

I like Rohan! And this spinoff series could generate a lot of new interest in the original series!

Hirohiko Araki is a somewhat divisive character here in the Western fanscape with “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” having a large cult following including its own meme culture where Jojo’s references are everywhere and almost anything can be traced back to Dio. It is one of those fandoms that you are either on the in or bewildered by the obsessive nature of the mangas devotees–There are few that find themselves landing in the middle. Consequently, a spin-off series from the world of Jojo is bound to have an established audience.

The existing fandom can rest assured that the series still includes Araki’s peculiar mix of horror, comedy, camp, machismo, and action. Furthermore, each segment stands on its own by touching on different story elements that Araki excels in. For example, “Mutsukabe-Hill” is the most horror-inspired segment, but still has a wonderful dark comedic angle that keeps the extreme elements of Arakai’s absurd storytelling subdued. For those who have watched the anime limited series of the same name, the stories will be recognizable as they were adapted from the manga. While knowing the material before going in can sometimes be a deterrent, and as wonderfully expressive as the anime is in capturing the world of Araki, there is no real comparing the art of the mangaka to any adaptation.

To those uninitiated, “Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe” is an ideal place to introduce readers to the world of “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” without having to commit to the decades-long series. The writing is sharp, the visuals are on par with Araki’s definitive work and it introduces the creator’s eccentricities without having to do a deep dive into the history of the Joestar family. Additionally, Rohan has become a fan favorite for good reason as he acts as a stand-in for Araki to explore his own world through the eyes of a mangaka (Rohan’s profession for those not in the know). Since most Jojo’s fans are quick to try to spread the good word, this may be the perfect intro series to give an idea of what new people to the fandom can expect.

Released in the same hardcover format as the ongoing Jojo’s series, the book is wonderfully presented. Though, to nitpick, a few extra colored panels would have been a welcome addition. Regardless, the hardcover bound release justifies the slightly higher price, and, more importantly, it is an aesthetically pleasing match with the other volumes of “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” for those already collecting the long-running series.

Ultimately, If you are one of those obsessed with all things Jojo’ you will enjoy “Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan” in equal measure, it is still quintessentially Araki’s absurd and sensational storytelling on a smaller, bite-sized scale. For those curious about the work of Araki but afraid to approach the decades-long series, this is an ideal introduction that conveys why so many are obsessive about Araki and the world he created.

Konnichiwa a todas, lectoras🌸

I got this because JoJo's spin-off, but also because anime* (which seems to be very faithful). I'm reviewing because I'm irritated specifically in this instance that Americanising his name (given name THEN family name) sounds awful, while Kishibe Rohan (Key-she-bay Row-ha-n) is musical and enchanting.

Otherwise, classic Jojo's. Although, as Araki comments, the first story could as easily have NOT involved Rohan at all, despite the fact that it clearly belongs in the Jojo's universe. The other three stories definitely have to use Rohan (and Heaven's Door in specific, or at least somebody with powers of persuasion) but are otherwise creepy ghost stories along the likes of which might appear in Yamishibai.

Although, there's an amount I find hard to believe that this is the entirety of Rohan's warm-up exercises. However, Araki drew it, so I would HAVE to assume it's accurate.

For him.

*I found out there is ALSO a live-action version, though I can't attest to its quality.
