Do you think ghosts haunt only houses? As a repo man, Mel just pulled off the smoothest take of his life. Kate, a college student, was undecided on which major to pursue. All of their plans went out the window the night Mel found Kate in the back of a ’74 Nova. When Mel becomes a suspect in Kate’s murder, he must leave his life behind and make a new start in Sacramento, where he and Kate meet other people with supernatural gifts. But not everything is sunshine and roses in California. Awakening to power comes at a cost, and all ghosts eventually become monsters. Can Mel trust these new friends in Sacramento? Can he help Kate find some peace without landing himself in jail? The fateful night Mel slipped behind the wheel of an old Chevy, it wasn’t just the car that became repossessed.

The book's concept sucked me in pretty quickly! However, it didn't go where I thought it was going to go until much further into the book which I found refreshing. I loved the relationship between Kate and Mel!

Kudos to debut author Brian Buhl for this interesting contemporary ghost story. Protagonist Mel is a repo man who is hired to bring in a baby blue '74 Chevy Nova. He nabs the Nova (which purrs like a jungle cat), but the classic car also comes with a sad, lonely and confused ghost. Just like that, Mel's life has changed forever - he can see ghosts. More adventures and supernatural events follow. Buhl keeps the story interesting and engaging as he shows us Mel's quest to learn about his new abilities, his new circumstances, and his new friend. Buhl contains the paranormal and keeps it believable (in its context). And some of Mel's newly discovered abilities are quite unusual (even if they sometimes come at the cost of a once-tasty lunch).

I was intrigued by the idea of a two-bit repro man repossessing a car with a ghost. The story did not disappoint. Mel, the unsuspecting car snatcher, is taken for the ride of his life. Kate, the ghost, is trapped in the car for a very grim reason, and Mel, a bit of an uncaring jerk, becomes her unlikely knight in shining armor (with a lot of dents). Kate and Mel are fabulous together. If you like ghost stories with surprising twists and turns, you'll love Mel and Kate's race against time to find some justice in a crazy world.

I'm a rather deliberate reader but this hooked me on page two and I finished it in two sittings. The plot is fun and unique, the pacing never drags. Evocative prose brings the characters and locations to vivid life. I'm looking forward to seeing what this author does next!

Such a fun read! Interesting supernatural magic system and powers, and surprisingly heartwarming. A fun debut from Buhl!
