Miss George's Second Chance

Rate this book
When desperately private writer Imogen offered to marry Peter Watson it wasn't just to save a friend but to secure her own future. With her eyesight failing and no other prospects for marital bliss on the horizon, surely it wouldn't be too horrible to marry without the benefits of love. But then Peter gains a title a week before they’re set to wed and all of Imogen’s expectations change.

Peter once believed that marriage to Imogen would solve his financial problems. He didn't mind marrying for convenience and a large fortune when affection was within reach. Yet when he gains a title, an estate, and a fortune of his own the secretive writer releases him from their engagement so he might marry for love. Now he’s returned, unwed and unaware of changes in her life, should he do what is expected or listen to his heart instead?

⭐⭐💫
2½ stars.

➕ What I liked :

Set in Brighton and not in London.

The main characters friendship.

The heroines brother.

The heroine is a author.

The hero was faithful during separation.

➖ What I disliked :

The heroines blindness/temporary blindness is never really explored or explained.
(The heroines eye sight deteriorated to blindness… but how/why?
And same with the “miracle” with her eye sight?…..

And why were the doctors so puzzled/nonplussed about the heroines eye disease/eye problems? Ophthalmology has existed for a very long time… and Oculist were also rather knowledgeable even during the Georgian era/Regency era/Victorian era.)

Repetitive.

A little bit of a issue with telling instead of showing.

The romantic build-up and chemistry was a little rushed, but also somewhat unconvincing.
(There was no real “spark” between the couple and the jump/shift from friends to lovers felt like it came out of nowhere.)

Some parts of the story were a little bit too anachronistic/too modern.

A little bit formulaic.

I do love a story about acceptance and unconditional love. I just don't like it when it was the woman who made the proposal. It's different if it was a business arrangement but another thing if hearts were involved.

By the way, who was Valentine Radley? Imogen's publisher? Or a fusion of Valentine Merton and Linus Radley?

Miss. George’s Second Chance by Heather Boyd
(Novella #2: Miss Mayhem Series)
Source: Purchase
Rating: 4/5 stars

Peter Watson has a serious problem; OK, Peter Watson has a few serious problems: he loves to gamble but isn’t very good at it, he is on the verge of losing absolutely everything and, the woman he is engaged to doesn’t love him at all. More to the point, the woman Peter is engaged to asked him to marry her so that she may use her considerable fortune to help save him. Yeah, that’s just how every marriage should start out.

Imogen George has a serious problem; OK, Imogen George has a few serious problems: she is losing her sight which will most certainly impede her ability to write, her blindness will (in her own head!) render her nothing more than a burden to her brother and, the man she is engaged to just found out he won’t be going to the poor house after all so there is no reason at all for her to continue the engagement. Somehow, nothing is going according to plan.

Imogen and Peter have known one another for many, many years and though both is fond of the other, their engagement was certainly never based on a great love or passion. Once Imogen learned that Peter would no longer need her fortune to help him, she set him free to pursue his own life and perhaps even find a great love and passion. Ever the practical woman, Imogen truly believes she is doing what is best for Peter and won’t hear any arguments to the contrary. Because of Imogen’s extreme stubbornness and with no other option available to him, Peter leaves his home and Imogen in order to set in order the new fortune and title bestowed to him by a distant relative. For the next year, Peter and Imogen both attempt to lead their lives as best they can. For Peter this means making some serious adjustments to his new lot in life and for Imogen, it means watching her career and future diminish as her eyesight becomes worse and worse.

One year later . . . .

Sir Peter Watson has returned home and is one very, very determined man. Almost immediately upon his arrival, Peter begins making inquiries about Imogen and her current situation. Though he is surprised to learn that she is completely blind, this fact in no way changes Peter’s mind regarding Imogen becoming his wife. One year earlier, Peter played by Imogen’s rules and he ended up walking away from the one and only woman who has ever been able to hold his interest and ignite his passion. Now all he has to do is convince one thoroughly stubborn woman that he is right and she is wrong. 

The wooing of Miss Imogen George is completely entertaining and quite sweet. Peter understands that Imogen is very scared about her condition and distraught that she has no way continue writing and so he sets about soothing her fears and showing her that there are ways for her to write even without her site. With Peter’s attention and unwavering affection, Imogen slowly begins to “see” the error of her ways as well as the possibility of a future that involves not just marriage but a marriage based on mutual love and great passion.

The Bottom Line: Boyd continues the Miss Mayhem Series with one exceptional character, Imogen George. Though Imogen is ridiculously stubborn, she is also very practical, quite creative and not willing to compromise anything where her writing and expectations for marriage are concerned. Imogen desperately wants to believe Peter and so she allows him to both help and woo her; watching as Imogen truly begins to believe and accept Peter is a true treat. In all, this is a solid and fine new addition to the Miss Mayhem series and one I am feel confident recommending to lovers of Regency reads, HEAs, novellas, continuing series and, second chance stories.

I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour in exchange for a fair and honest review. I rated it 4.5 out of 5 Stars.

An utterly charming historical romance, Miss George’s Second Chance by Heather Boyd, is a good reminder to seize love when you find it. Well developed characters, good dialogue and the added physical and emotional issues accompanying someone losing their vision kept me turning the pages to discover what would happen next. While the second book in the Miss Mayhem series, this story can be read and enjoyed on its own.

Imogen George enjoys life living in her brother’s home, secretly penning stories under an assumed name and visiting her host of friends. Realizing something’s wrong with her vision, and wanting to help a friend she cares deeply for, Imogen does the unthinkable and proposes marriage to Peter Watson, a dear friend, for “convenience” sake. He needs her money and she’s afraid she’ll need someone to take care of her if she becomes blind. Never thinking Peter could care for her as more than a friend, Imogen keeps her emotions towards Peter guarded.

Peter Watson hasn’t always been wise with his money and now in financial straits he’s worried about ending up in debtor’s prison. When his friend Imogen George proposes a platonic marriage that will get him out of financial trouble, Peter easily agrees assuming that they will eventually develop feelings between then. When a distant cousin passes away, and leaves his immense fortune to Peter, he suddenly finds himself without a fiancé – Imogen breaks their engagement on the basis they no longer need each other. It’s only when he compares every other woman he meets to her that Peter realizes he’s already in love with the woman who sent him away.

The scenes between Imogen and Peter are well written and completely enjoyable. They have great verbal and emotional chemistry, though Imogen is reluctant to admit to her emotions at first. Ms. Boyd does a good job developing both characters and I really enjoyed getting to know Imogen and Peter both and learning their strengths and weaknesses. I also enjoyed getting to know the secondary characters, especially her brother Walter and her friends Miss Radley and Miss Long. Ms. Boyd does a good job keeping the reader engaged with just the right amount of action and emotional angst within the pages of her short story.

Will Peter convince Imogen to give their love a second chance? Will Imogen loose her sight forever? You’ll have to read Miss George’s Second Chance to find out. I enjoyed it quite a bit and look forward to reading more of Ms. Boyd’s work.

I am so glad that I waited to read Miss Watson's First Scandal until I had Miss George's Second Chance in my hands to read. When I start one of Heather Boyd's fabulous historical romance series I can never wait to get my hands on the next book. I loved Miss Watson's First Scandal but I think I enjoyed Miss George's Second Chance just a little bit more, if that is even possible.

I knew when I met Imogene George in the first book that I liked her. She is strong, independent, and doesn't want to put anyone out. I really admired this young lady for the courage she found to try to help her friend's brother Peter. However she she finds out that Peter has another option she backs out, in the hopes that Peter will find a young lady to love without her problems. She doesn't want Peter to have to deal with her blindness.

I have to admit that I did not like Peter Watson at all in the first book. I thought he was a little on the selfish side. However after reading Miss George's Second Chance, I found an all new fondness for Peter. I really enjoyed seeing his sweet, kind, caring, and protective side when he is with Imogene.

I loved watching these two finding their way back together. This time, not out of convenience, but love. I really don't want to tell you too much but when Imogene and Peter are at the beach and how he reacts has to be one of my very favorite scenes. Peter is a true gentleman. I have to say that this book left me with one of those warm fuzzy feelings. I just loved it.

As you know if you have read some of my other reviews of Heather Boyd's work, I am a HUGE fan. I love her writing style and this book is another example of her talent. I can not wait to see what is next in this series. I know I will be impatiently awaiting the release of the next Miss Mayhem Novella series. This is a short story, that you may be able to read in one setting. I was able to read it in a very short period of time. I was quickly flipping pages though because I could not wait to see what was going to happen with Imogene and Peter.

If you are already a fan of Ms. Boyd's work then, hurry, click the link and go grab a copy of this book. If you have never read her work before then you too need to hurry and click the link to grab a copy of this book and get a good taste of why Ms. Boyd is on my must read list.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always is has been my pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Miss George's Second Chance.

It’s a short book, just around 100 pages, but Boyd manages to nicely create a tender love story about two people whose feelings for each other go deeper than they let on. And by hiding, they manage to make the other believe that they don’t care. So when Imogen makes her sacrifice by giving Peter his freedom to go find someone he can love, neither let on to how much they actually want to be together and just continue to hide those feelings from others.

As misunderstandings in romances go, this one is a classic and I think it is handled very well. Once the two are back in the same sphere it, with a little help from their friends, they quickly figure things out and the path to their Happy Ever After is heartfelt and sweet. Peter proves himself to be one of the best heroes a heroine could ever ask for.

This was a very sweet but short historical romance novella. It tells of Imogen and Peter and their second chance of being together. I really liked the style of writing, the tone and flow of the book. Although there were a lot of areas that could have been developed more, but, because this was a novella, the essence and the romance of the story never really suffered. A very good entertaining read.

3.25 Stars - Although it isn't quite clear right away, Peter and Imogen have always liked the other. After a year absence of inheriting title and fortune, Peter comes back to Brighton and is convinced Imogen is the right woman for him despite her lost sight.
