You can't live to fight another day unless you survive the night.
Forty-four years have passed since the Restored United States emerged from the crucible of revolution re-dedicated to the ideals of equality and opportunity, but some things never change. The needy still struggle, the rich still rule, and the oppressed still fall prey to violence.
Physical therapist Naomi Kwan overcame poverty and prejudice to put her Subsistence upbringing behind her, but no matter how hard she works or how properly she behaves, the stigma remains. When a chunk of San Francisco's poorest neighborhood goes up in flames in a terrorist attack, her past makes her an easy target for corrupt authorities eager to make an arrest.
Devastated by the loss of home and family, Naomi has no money, no resources and nowhere to hide. Loyalty may be her biggest liability. She knows her friend and fellow fugitive Serena Nguyen is no terrorist, but Serena's sanity is questionable, and her temper is deadly.
Tracking down the faceless enemies who want them blamed for the tragedy is their only hope for redemption, but the situation gets murkier with every passing hour, and the casualty count rises. They can't hope to succeed on their own.
Fortunately they won't be alone for long. The plan is simple: first, get away. Then fight back.
I write, I grow things, I camp and hike, I pacify cats, and I do a lot of research online and off. If our assorted alphabet-soup national security agencies really do monitor citizens based on keyword searches, then I'm probably on all of the criminal watch lists in existence.
Otherwise, I am mostly quiet with a thirty-percent chance of loud, and the rest is subject to change without warning. Professional development has included classroom teaching, animal training, aquaculture, horticulture, retail management, inventory operations, and customer service. Personal development is ongoing.
Great follow up in Controlled Descent. A good mix of near future cyber punk, political thriller and action book. I agree that Serena and her 'dogs' are worth the read. Very interesting device to show the inner working of a slightly damaged mind. Main characters show all sorts of flaws and shortcomings but as they combine with others it works out. I like that the MCs have flaws, some major. It makes the situations they find themselves much more interesting to read. I look forward to the next installment. I do want the all woman security team back. Mayhem Inc.
I enjoyed the follow up to Controlled Descent, but it was still missing that magic found in Rough Passages. There are a few places that the book seems 'too polished' once again.
Since you already know most of the characters, you're already invested. You fall more in love with some characters, while others fall to the wayside. The plot becomes more involved and there's plenty of action.
What really stands out about this book is that characters I adored from the first book, suddenly meet their demise... and it's as if it's a side note rather than a major occurrence. Bam! They're dead. Moving on. It was actually fun this way. Instead of a big build up and then dead people, it sort of just whacks you in the head. You find yourself floundering for a minute trying to figure out what happened. I loved it :)
I enjoyed this book (it comes after Controlled Descent) and its characters, especially Serena. I think Naomi was grand as well. There were complex emotions, a great ensemble cast, and neat world building.
I loved this book and the characters that inhabit the world. This is a reader's first introduction to Serena, who is one of my favorite characters. It's a great follow up to Controlled Descent, but can be read on its own. I highly suggest reading them in order though. It's way more fun. The world is plausible, relatable, and yet new enough to keep things interesting. Everything moves along quickly and the story warps up well. I didn't want to say goodbye to these new friends, but thankfully there are more books and stories to read.
With the addition of more characters to love and the spotlight on my favorites, along with heart-pounding action, I liked this sequel even more than I liked Controlled Descent. Can't get enough of these characters.
Sequal to Controlled Descent, with the same great characters ('cept one... lookin' at you Tyler), with some spectacular additions... Serena and the dogs are worth reading the book by themselves. Recommended
I liked it. Just enough of a alternative future to keep things interesting while still seeming familiar and possible. Plus introduction of my newest favorite character. Good follow up to the first book controlled descent.
