I found out 9 months ago that I have celiac disease and it hasn't been easy to find recipes that work and has any flavor. I already have a slow cooker but I only use it to make Greek yogurt.
Some food that I cook take hours but I cook them on the stove. The recipes I liked in the book can easily be cooked on the stove. Like the Garlic and artichoke pasta and Gluten free cream of mushroom soup. I saved the recipe for the Easy chocolate cake. It's made in the slow cooker in cleaned 15 oz aluminum cans and I think my grand kids would like to make this cake.
You can easily make baked potatoes or cook corn on the cup in the microwave oven. You don't need a slow cooker for that.
There is a recipe for Swedish meatballs.. Real Swedish meatballs use breadcrumbs not bread, there is no allspice or nutmeg in then, just salt, white and black pepper. After my meatballs are browned I cook them in water for 30 minutes, then make the sauce. There is no need to cook them in a slow cooker for 3-4 hours! There is a recipe for Marinara sauce. I got my recipe from my late husband who learnt it from his Italian grandma. According to the book you need to cook the sauce for 4-5 hours on high! There is no need for that..
I used to love chicken Alfredo at Olive garden, something I can't eat any longer. I do have a recipe for Alfredo sauce that I can eat and it taste just as great. I was a bit disappointed with the recipe in this book. "Use 1 can of 16 oz Alfredo sauce"! I don't need a cook book for that. There is a recipe for homemade Alfredo sauce as well.
Barbecue Chicken - but without the grill! I can't imagine a chicken cooked in home made BBQ sauce will taste the same as the one you have put on your grill.
I do like Sweet potato casserole, but why use canned sweet potatoes!
A lot of the recipes you don't need a slow cooker for. If you don't have a working stove and or oven these recipes would be good but if you do, why would you want to bake a cake in the slow cooker when you can do it a lot quicker in your oven. I already have a slow cooker so I will try some of these dishes.
I will write more when I have tried some of these recipes.
I have tried two of the recipes and both were delicious. I'm trying another tomorrow. They are so easy to make. No mess no bother. Easy to follow the directions. I'm new to g!item free and it is so easy to make simple changes to make your favorite foods gluten free. Fantastic bonus is that you are not adding heat to your home.
I plan to try a few recipes and it did give me a few ideas for things to make. A number of them do involve some cooking on the stove (rather than “dump dinners”), have a short cooking time (1 hour in the slow cooker, I’m used to 6-8), and some I think would be just as easy to make without a slow cooker.
Right now I'm more into looking at pressure cooker recipes vs. slow cooker. Nevertheless, this book has lots of appealing recipes, and I think we could all stand to consume less gluten even if we don't think we are gluten intolerant.
so far so good but the digital formating is not great. not pleased with author referibg to living gf as a diet makes me not like her on various leverls. more to come in my review
Was not able to find anything my family would like -- seemed to have strange combinations of spices and food (for my taste). Perhaps I was just looking for something different.
