Well, now, I am going to have to think this through, and maybe read it again. Dalrymple's tale is 1)dystopian, in a time when "it will all hurt" for most people; it's bleak, a lot of people die;
2) ya, in that it involved primarily young people who seem to eventually find a way to survive together
3) science fiction, in that Tod the robot is a character, and things happen in space;
4) magic, in that magic happens from time to time, or is it in other ways supernatural or psychedelic or mad;
4) fable, in that we have talking animals interacting with human characters;
5) violent, which usually goes along with dystopian tales, but this one can get "dark" and gruesome, sometimes on the level of horror;
6) as with others of Dalrymple's work, has a Clockwork Orange-punk sensibility
6) not terribly forthcoming with narrative or even world-building details. We almost don't know anything about what is happening through the whole first volume, and yet. . . we can say a simple story emerges as if out of a fog and characters coalesce into a team, pitted against the Red Wizard (and maybe some other bad guys).

The art is sketchy and blotchy and appropriate for a dirty/messy post-apocalyptic world, pen and ink, mostly darkly watercolored. The thin and sort of confusing narrative seems to emerge out of images, splotches of story spattered here and there. Am I right on here, or am I being too generous about basic shapeless chaos?! This may be better than I think, because it is such an unconventional approach, but I also felt a bit like this about Dalrymple's earlier work, that he draws these interestingly looking punk fantasy characters, but doesn't like/have the patience for telling conventional stories. The rating for Wrenchies is very low. . . but ah, I see the second and third volumes of It Will Hurt are his highest rated work, so I will order them and see.

This is a really fun and short adventure! I really liked the sketchy style of drawing, and each of the characters are really unique. I did struggle a bit to discern the structure of the story, but still an enjoyable read.

I honestly had no idea what was happening, and the art didn't appeal to me either. Perhaps it would be better if I read it offline in paper format, but overall, not impressed. **Also would probably be a much better read if I was on acid. but then maybe it would freak me out? Who knows

This probably just wasn't my cup of tea.

The main synopsis for the book is pretty much perfect as it truly is a "weird, sad, silly, and sketchy, fantasy adventure strip with magic and science-fiction and some fighting action".

Meanwhile, I understood none of what I was reading. I knew nothing about what was going on. The flow is wonky and confusing. The pov jumps around in and out of order. The art is sometimes hard to make out. At one point it was said a cat was the narrator – and by that point I was just like, sure why not?

What was annoying to me, was that it kept starting a storyline and then would backtrack with 'oh hold on I have to tell you this first'. So in some aspect it felt like someone really was telling what would have been a cool story, but then kept interrupting themselves to add in an important detail that happened prior.

Which in the end makes the story long, boring, and uncool. I just could not get into any of this. I tried giving the art a chance but found myself liking the illustrations on the chapter breaks or end pages more than the actual comic.

But I do believe there was a good try at diversity and some character growth when it came down to the fighting bit at the end? But 99% of this was just lost on me and I didn't enjoy the time I spent with it.

Galley provided by the publisher through Edelweiss+ for an honest review. Many thanks to them.

*I received this book as an eARC from Image Comics via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review*

This graphic novel is very artistic and stylized. And, I did not understand it. I was lost and confused while reading this book. There are sparse panels and a sketchy style of artwork. The story feels almost dreamlike with the physics. It's trippy and, at times, creepy. I was unsure what I was supposed to think or feel about the story as I read along. This book was just not for me. I give it a 2/5.

Two stars and a waffle.

Four stars for art alone. I absolutely love the gritty but sophisticated art style. The plot is definitely confused and tangled and likely a metaphor for battling the various feelings of growing up, but it just wasn't quite clear enough for my tastes. But the art is just so gripping that those who enjoy visual stimulation will be pleased.

Extremely strange story. Lots of potential, but it felt extremely fractured and disparate which made the story hard to follow. There was also little character development, so it was difficult to feel attached to anyone. Even with all that though, the art is gorgeous.

I liked a couple of the panels (like "I have no idea what I'm doing") but overall this was a bit too experimental for me.

I had a hard time figuring out the plot but I liked the cat narrator. I wasn't super drawn in but I can see why some people like it.

I abandoned this after Part Two. This is a bit of a vanity project, mysterious and magical but disjointed and not particularly clear. Maybe I missed the point but, although the artwork is good enough, I wasn't enjoying it.

The art style was amazing. The storyline was non-existent. This would be a great fit for anyone who enjoys a totally disjointed tale. Me? DNF.

This was like reading a Salvador Dali painting. You could kind of see what was going on, but it was still incredibly confusing and left you with more questions than answers.

Would have been better released as a sketchbook. The art is wonderful - unsettling and playful - but there's very little else going on.

There is no artist like Farel. These watercolor and pen paintings are part of a larger world he's creating.

Honestly, I am not sure quite what I read. And that is a good thing. The images kind of sit in your head and draw you back to look again. It's childlike and unsettling. I wish there had a been a slightly better orientation for the story (if that is centralized) just so I wasn't confused quite so much.
