Readers who relish heated passion and chilling suspense love New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards’s acclaimed novels featuring Dr. Charlotte “Charlie” Stone. A heroine with a keen mind for catching killers and a soft heart for bad boys, Charlie is back in this third sizzling paranormal romance thriller.
HER LAST WHISPER
Madness and murder invaded Dr. Charlotte Stone’s life when she was just a girl - and made her a woman determined to save others from the horror she survived. An expert in the psychology of serial killers, she’s faced down more than her share of human monsters. But Charlie can also communicate with the spirits of those who die violently, an extrasensory skill that has helped the FBI bring lethal predators to justice. Now, after narrowly escaping death a second time, Charlie’s ready to step away from the edge... before her luck runs out.
Too bad Charlie is too dedicated for her own good - and too devoted to federal agent Tony Bartoli to say no when he asks her to ride shotgun on yet another risky mission. Of course, she already has her hands full with Michael Garland: the handsome, roguish ghost with whom she’s hopelessly in love - a spirit who depends on Charlie to keep him from slipping forever into the dark side of the afterlife. But in the mortal world, beautiful single women are vanishing from Las Vegas hotels at night. All signs indicate that a psychopath is on the prowl in Sin City, and Bartoli’s FBI colleague Lena Kaminsky has reason to fear that her missing sister may be just the killer’s type.
In a town full of fast players and few rules, flushing out a smooth-talking stalker like the Cinderella Killer might be a loser’s game. But for Charlie, the only way to cage her quarry is to plunge back into the homicidal hell she vowed to leave behind - and may not leave alive.

Suspenseful, sexy, and captivating from the start, Her Last Whisper is a pulse-pounding thriller romance that marks the pinnacle of this series – IMO this third book is the best!
I think everyone has an author (or a couple) where no matter what they write, you’ll read. Karen Robards is one of those authors for me. I’m a big fan of her romantic suspense and historical romance books but I was a bit wary of this series – there’s a slight paranormal edge to it and I don’t like to read paranormal books. But, I’m so glad I gave this series a chance because aside from the Banning Sisters trilogy, this series is my next favorite out of all her books. This is book 3 in the Dr. Charlotte Stone series and not a standalone! You must read the first two books before starting this one.
Just a little background info from before (not spoilers): Charlie is a serial killer expert who can hear voices and see the ghosts of those who suffered a violent death. In book 1, one of her subjects and death row inmate Michael Garland was stabbed to death and his ghost has lingered since. Charlie and Michael are involved. At the same time, FBI agent Tony Bartoli is interested in pursuing a relationship with Charlie.
Charlie is an expert in studying the behaviors of serial killers and has helped the FBI in several cases. In this book, she’s approached by FBI agent Tony Bartoli (who has a romantic interest in her) on behalf of one of his agents – the sister of said agent is missing and rumored to be taken by the Cinderella Killer. Together with Michael’s ghost, she, Tony, and the rest of the FBI team head out to Vegas to catch the bastard.
Okay, obviously that’s not just IT – it’s a romantic suspense so I’m not going to spell out what happens. But I will say that less than 1% of the books I read now are paranormal and the fact that I’m willing to read this series (and I love it too!!) says a lot. I would say this book is the most suspenseful out of the series, but there’s still a heavy romance aspect (HOT ghost sex!!!) and I liked how well-balanced it was – I never thought the book lacked in either genre.
The characters are also something else too! Charlie is my dream heroine: independent, sassy, smart, and quick on her toes. Though dead, Michael can give any live guy a run for his money. First three things I love about him are his 1) sarcasm 2) sarcasm and 3) sarcasm and then of course his smoking hot good looks. I think the fact that their relationship is impossible is what makes them that much more endearing to me – reading about them together (human and ghost) often reminds me of my own mortality. Part of what makes life beautiful is its finite nature and I admire Michael and Charlie for acting on that sentiment, living in the now, consequences be damned.
This is a series that took a hold of my heart and gave it a big ‘ol squeeze while reading. The suspense, the thrill, and the romance are so richly depicted I can really see these books become movies. There are probably a million adjectives that can describe this series but the top ones on my list are: addictive, unputdownable, total escapism! Everyone should read these books!
ARC provided by Random House Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 3rd novel in Dr Charlotte Stone Series by Karen Robards and despite a few gripes, I enjoyed it more than book #2, which ended when
Charlie was brought back to life by Michael Garland, the dead, now ghost serial killer that she’s fallen in love with, now begins with her decision to just work on her serial studies and not get involved with helping her FBI friends finding serial killers.
But when Tony, the FBI agent and friend asks her help in finding Lena, the other FBI agent’s missing sister, who he thinks may have been target by yet another serial killer…what else can Charlie do??? Dive in immediately and soon she and the FBI team are off on another mission to find Lena’s sister before she’s killed.
What a relief…that after quite a long disappearance into the unknown, Michael Garland returns yet again to save Charlie from being bumped off again!!!! Of course does Charlie listen to Michael’s advice?? Are you kidding me??? Of course not!!!
This story had a bit more plot that the last book and actually it kept me guessing until almost the very end, who the bad bad guys were.
I just wish there was more dialogue in this series. There is so much internal dialogue…mostly by Charlie that just drives me crazy and gets me skimming a lot of pages…why can’t she make up her mind about Michael??? Yes, No….!!!
One character that I really liked in this book was Tam, Charlie’s psychic friend!!! She’s totally awesome!!!!
Anyway, the ending just got to me!!! What now!!! What next??? What’s going to happen to Michael??? After all that’s happened, I cannot believe that something good won’t come his way after what he has done not only for Charlie but a lot of other people.
This is the third book of the series. I was upset that my library did not have the second book. So I missed one whole book. The good thing is that I was able to follow along with Charlie and Michael's romance, no matter how odd it was. I too loved Michael. I like Tony the FBI agent. But I loved Michael. The mystery the Gingerbread man was scary and creepy and I was just thankful that Michael was there to keep me occupied with the romance more than the fear of the suspense.
This is a great book. Well worth reading. I would suggest that you also read books 1 and 2. You will want as much of this sexy ghost as possible. Dr. Stone is really a great character. She is strong and driven to understand the serial Killer's mind.
This is the third book in the Dr. Charlotte Stone series, and I have to say that the initial surprise at what a unique series this is, has yet to wear off. Combining equal parts of paranormal, mystery, thriller, humor, romance and passion, the Dr. Charlotte Stone is one of the most well rounded series, I have ever read! Moreover, Her Last Whisper is sure to keep you constantly entertained with its two mysteries and two love stories.
Although it is possible to read this book as a standalone, as the immediate mystery, the identification and tracking down of the "Cinderella" serial killer is resolved, I would recommend that you read it in order. Not only does the love life of the heroine evolve over the series, but there is also an underlying mystery over whether Michael Garland, a convicted serial killer and now Dr. Charlotte Stone's ghost lover, actually committed the horrendous crimes he was convicted of which also is slowly solved over the entire series. Her Last Whisper ends in one big cliffhanger, so there will definitely be at least one other book. As of the time of this review, however, I could not find any information on when it is expected to be released, so now I'm sitting on pins and needles! This series is that good!
Dr. Charlotte Stone, once targeted by the depraved "Boardwalk" serial killer who killed Charlie's best friend and her family, is no longer a victim. Instead, she became a psychiatrist who researches serial killers and now she is the hunter who hunts down these madmen. The fact that she has a gift, which allows her to communicate with the newly dead, particularly those who have experienced violent deaths, only makes her even more suited to help protect society from their deviant behavior.
There is one spirit, however, that of convicted serial killer, Michael Garland, who has become quite a problem, for her heart that is. She studied him in life, and never doubted his guilt, but it wasn't until he saved her life, giving up his in the process, that she began to question Michael's crimes. Torn between her knowledge of how serial killers operate, and her unmistakeable attraction and heartfelt feelings towards Michael, she doesn't know what to do. Never mind that his time in a spiritual plane where she can still be with him is no doubt limited and, in fact, she has had to call in favors from her friend who is a psychic to help extend his time on a number of occasions when his alpha protective nature over her, not to mention his attraction to her, has gotten him in trouble. Meanwhile, there is a real, living and breathing man, Special FBI Agent, Anthony Bartoli, who specializes in apprehending serial killers, who she has teamed up with numerous times in the past to solve serial killer cases who wants to start a real living, breathing relationship with her.
Her Last Whisper picks up where, Book 2 The Last Kiss Goodbye, leaves off. Namely, Dr. Charlotte Stone is recovering from the injuries that she suffered at the hands of the "Gingerbread" serial killer, who she nearly drowned helping capture. On the day she returns back to work, she is determined to stay out of danger. Two near death experiences at the hands of serial killers is enough, and Michael means to convince her that she needs to find a new line of work. When one of Tony's FBI team members, Lena Kaminsky, who she nearly died with on her last case, personally asks her for a favor to help track down her sister, who she believes has been taken by a serial killer, she has no choice but to help.
This time the adventures take place in Las Vegas where a string of beautiful, young women tourists have been disappearing from their hotels. As Charlie joins Tony's team to help solve this case before time runs out for Lena's sister, Charlie also has to battle her growing feelings for Michael and the constant temptation to accept that given his limited time Tony should be the perfect man for her. Can Charlie help find Lena's sister before it's too late? Who will she decide to trust with her heart? Moreover, when she inadvertently discovers yet another one of Michael's secrets, will she be able to continue denying that he might actually be the dark troubled soul that he claims to be?
I love the intensity of this series. From the hot, passionate scenes, to the spine tingling, suspense filled ones, the writing is unbelievably good! Just when you think you know which way Dr. Stone's heart is turning, or the identity of the "Cinderella" serial killer; guess again, because Ms. Robards takes you on another thrilling twist and turn.
I highly recommend this series to not just paranormal romance lovers, but also to readers who enjoy thrillers, even those who do not ordinarily read romances. The psychological aspects of this novel, including the dissecting of the criminal/serial killer mind is so clever and profound, that I believe its appeal is likely to be appreciated by fans spanning many different genres. There is also plenty of heat and romance to captivate the more traditional romance reader. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
This series gets better with each book. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I won't assume you've read the first two books. If you like mystery, suspense, romance and a really good ghost story, check out these books. I really suggest starting with the first book, you won't be sorry.
Only 15 days into the new year and already I have my first 1 star rating. I've read one other book in this series. I found it entertaining fluff for 3 stars. This however, was not that.
There were so many things that had me rolling my eyes. However, there is only one thing that makes this 1 star and not 2. It was the writing. I can deal with the constant monologue of the MC, the ghost love story...whatever. BUT....the constant telling was hard to take for as long as this book was (and really, it wasn't that long....it just felt long.) The plot was also focused on the one thing, more than the mystery.
I almost forgot I’ve been waiting for this sequel to come out…. After how everything ended on the last book, I have high hopes that the series will take the story up a notch, like say, Charlie’s seeing and communicating with the spirit going stronger and a relationship more defined maybe?
The story picks up where it left off…. Charlie is back to working at her old job, researching serial killers at Wallens Ridge State Prison. But, ever since her dying and being brought back to life experience, she has been hearing voices in her head at odd moments. And. to cut the story short, Tony is back, again asking for Charlie’s help in finding a serial killer known as the Cinderella Killer who is abducting women in Vegas…. And he is asking her in behalf of Lena, his FBI Colleague, who thinks that said serial killer also took her missing sister.
So, once again, Charlie finds herself working withToni and his FBI team, in search for a killer… Add to that is Charlie's constant worries over Michael, her handsome, roguish ghost, who depends on her to keep him from slipping forever into the dark side of the afterlife.
It took me longer than normal to finish this book cause I just wasn’t too caught up into it. It did started off to a good start… and I was constantly on the edge when it comes to what is happening with Michael or what would happen to him. But the run around of Charlie’s feelings towards Michael, “I’m falling for him but I can’t love him..” just went on and on… And I just want it to end! Seriously! I was really, REALLY, hoping, this time around, this part would be resolved. Maybe it’s just me, but I was over this scenario with the second book. On scenes where Charlie is forced to be honest with her feelings, it felt like finally we’re getting somewhere. I do get the “why’s”.... how could I not when Charlie constantly rationalize everything over and over. Although, there is that very promising note in the end. Again, something to look forward to.
But, this isn’t just about romance….. There is the mystery and suspense that revolves around said serial killer that also kept me on the edge… Not to mention that climatic scene that was totally nail biting. And I appreciate how the author somehow lead me to think on where the story was heading and then proved me totally wrong and head on a really unexpected direction. Ha! Loved all that!
Which leads me to that very intriguing ending!!! Well, now, that just makes me want the next book ASAP!!!! Hope it won’t be a long wait!
When I found out that Her last whisper was on Netgalley, I first thought that my request would be declined because I need to send more feedbacks. But anyway, I got approved and I was really excited to start reading it! I fell in love with these unique characters in the previous instalment and I had to know what happened to them afterward.
But I'll admit I was sceptical for the first 60% because I didn't really get into it. I liked it and it was nice to read but I wasn't hooked, at least not yet. I didn't really care about this new case with Lena' sister. I wanted to rate it 3 stars for that part but then the story picked up. There were lots of actions and twists that kept me on edge.
The romance was fantastic too. I was still hoping that they'll find a way to be permanently together because, come on, Michael and Charlie are still perfect for each other. I laughed and cried for them, especially in the end with that cliffhanger.
So now, I really need to know more. What is going on? I guess I have to wait to know the answer. Is there another book after this one? I have no idea... It seems like it considering how it ended.
Overall, I really enjoyed it. Another great book in the series. If you liked reading The Last Kiss Goodbye, don't miss this one.
Yay!! Netgalley is awesome!! Diving in right away.. Will let you know what I think soon!!! =)
UPDATE...Honest review for Netgalley
I just have to say I'm speechless... This is the best book in the series and with this ending....I don't know how I'll be able to wait for the next one. Amazing!!! Full review coming soon.
"There was also a sense of profound connection, a depth of feeling, and unspoken acknowledgment: You matter to me"
Well I am speechless.... How do I convey my love for this book and the whole series. It was a thrilling non-stop suspenseful journey with quick wit and glorious sexual tension around every turn. There was not one page that left you behind and after every turn there was more and more to love.
I have to say, I missed Michael. He is seriously one of my favorite characters I have ever read about. He's up there with Barrons (Fever series) and Daemon (Lux Series). There is just something so real about him that makes me enjoy every second with him. He is so very protective of Charlie along with one of the crudest and actaully bad characters you've ever read. By bad I mean he's a serial killer. Or is he? This is where Karen has done some amazing work. We all know that he has killed woman but there is a hidden story behind this that we only get pieces of every now and then. It makes him such a mystery. The more you get into the story the more you realize how truly amazing he can be. It makes you question the real Michael? Would he kill the woman that the courts say he did? I, of course, do not for one second believe this, but there is actually no proof on this. I'm still waiting. Oh yes there was one other thing I should mention about Michael...
"He was a ghost; he did not belong in her world"
On the other hand there is Charlie who is down right the opposite of Michael. She is a psychiatrist who likes routine and control. She's not willing to be controlled by some "man" who thinks that because he says jump she's got to say how high? I absolutely love this about her. She may be straight lace in the fact that she's bland (no offense Charlie) but she has this hidden hardness about her. This, of course, is a development from her past which we have already learnt about in the previous books (See Review HERE). While Charlie has fought these feelings for Michael for so long, you can really see the connection between the two in "Her Last Whisper"
"He doesn't deserve what's happening to him,' she told Tam fiercely. "I know him. I vouch for him. He is - was- a good man."
I loved that we got so much more romance!! Which is funny cause she's human and he's a ghost so nothing can actually happen. This obstacle which they can never overcome is what I love the most about this series. They LITERALLY CANNOT BE TOGETHER. Physically, at all! There are a couple times (not going to spoil with details) when things happen and I love that they happen a few and far between. It allows for their relationship to build on mutual respect and friendship even though their sexual chemistry is of the charts!!!
Now let me actually get down to the nitty gritty of this book. The actual pace and story line was like a roller coaster ride. There was absolutely no down time. If one thing wasn't happening another thing was. I couldn't believe how completely hooked I was from the very first page. The mystery to this story, of course like the other books in this series, is that they are trying to catch a serial killer. Only in this one it's a FBI's sister that was taken. Every emotion is heightened. Every action is over and above what is called for. Everything that happens make's this book the best book in the series. Yes! I'm actually saying that a third book in a series is the best one so far. I normally will never say that. There is always something about learning about two characters at the beginning of the journey that is the best but not here. Karen has transported us so far past that. She had me on the edge of my seat wither it was from the serial killer that was running loose, or the constant battles that Michael and Charlie's "relationship" face.
However, I will warn you... I finished this book mad. Not at the story but at the fact that I have to wait so long for the next one... There is a huge cliff hanger (which Karen is very very good at) that will leave you completely stunned. At least I was. I seriously flipped through the pages and held my breath..There was just no way it could end like that. When I realized what Karen did. I released MY last whisper .....
Charlie and Michael's story continues, and the two are still arguing about her career choice as much as ever.
Charlie, who has barely recovered from nearly dying after helping the FBI with one of their serial killer cases, has returned to work at the prison without having processed what's happened to her. Michael, who knows that he can only help her so much if something were to happen again, is trying to convince her to leave her job once again, when .
Tony, the FBI agent she's worked with before who is romantically interested in her, arrives just then to request her help with what they believe is another serial killer case, before the sister of one of their colleagues becomes another one of the killer's victims.
Charlie reluctantly agrees, and .
I did not remember Charlie being this much of an idiot before, avoiding dealing with her trauma despite being a psychiatrist who should know better, and preferring to ignore problems hoping they'll go away instead of actually dealing with them. I spent most of this book annoyed with her for one reason or another, and she lost major cookie points here.
Regardless, I'm curious to see how things end, so I'm jumping right into the last book of the series, The Last Time I Saw Her.
Have been a long time fan of Ms. Robards, gong back decades! Thrilled when I came upon this ARC via Netgalley. Many thanks! This story is a series that follows Dr. Charlotte Stone, "Charlie," through her trials and tribulations as a serial killer researcher. She also has a "secret." She can connect with those who have died a violent death, and her ghost lover, Michael is one of them! Have to be honest, wasn't sure how the PRN would work for me, but having gotten a feeling about Michael, I can see why anyone would fall for this man!
In this book, Charlie has tired. Just plain tired of her working with the FBI and all it as brought to her life in the past: danger and almost being killed. But when they reach out one more time and ask for her help in finding the sister of an FBI agent, Charlie can't say no. She plummets herself into the world of the Cinderella Killer and with the help of Tony Bartoli and his team. Robards weaves suspense like few others ever have achieved. And throw in a "hot" ghost lover like Michael? It just left me with a different perspective on the PRN issue!!
Many plot twists and turns go into t his 3rd book and with the ending as it was, I am so very anxious to know where all is headed. It's weird rooting for a ghost, and I'm praying Robards finds a way to give Charlie what she desires! Well worth your time and effort if you enjoy a solid author who writes romantic suspense with the best of them. Enjoy!!
This is book #3 in the series, I thought this story was stronger than the previous book, The Last Kiss Goodby. Charlie (Charlotte) is not only a psychologist who specializes in serial killers, but she also sees the dead. FBI agent Anthony Bartoli again asks Charlie for help on another case as women are missing in Las Vegas including the sister of his fellow agent, Lena Kaminsky. And of course, Charlie is accompanied by the ghost of Alleged killer, super bad boy Michael Garland. The story is pretty fast paced and the search for the killer keeps you guessing. I find Charlie's behavior at times frustrating. She sometimes comes across as immature, but then she is having conversations with someone that the rest can't see. She also has to decide if she wants to pursue a relationship with the hot FBI agent or the impossible one with the sexy spirit. The book had an unexpected twist at the end. I will read the next one in the series. There is something special in Karen Robards writing that won't let my interest in this implausible series die. Maybe it's that Michael reminds me of one of my favorite characters from one of her previous books ONE SUMMER, Johnny Harris. Or maybe its my love all things paranormal. *I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
I received a copy from Netgalley and the publisher for an honest review.
I was thrilled to find this on Netgalley. I love the Dr. Charlotte Stone series! Her Last Whisper is #3 in series. It might stand alone, but I suggest you read the first 2. A great mix of suspense/thriller with steamy romance.
Charlotte "Charlie" Stone is a criminal physiologist specializing in serial killers. She's been helping the FBI solve cases, but the last case almost killed her. She's gone back to research and plans to leave hunting serial killers to law enforcement. Handsome Special Agent Tony Bartolli shows up to request her assistance one more time. The Cinderella Killer has taken Special Agent Kaminsky's sister.
Charlie confides a secret to Tony that can ruin her career. She can see ghosts of victims of violent crimes. It's not her only secret. One of the ghosts has attached himself to her. Michael Garland is her ghostly protector...and lover.
Her Last Whisper had some real surprises in it. I thought I had figured out the end game for Tony, Charlie, and Michael. Ms. Robards threw me a curve ball. I am just sorry that I must wait for the next book.
Updated 10/16/2014...Library had the audio version. Just finished it and it's worth a listen...even if you've read the book! Good narration by Anne Marie Lee.
Karen Robards has done it again, she got me to forget time as I was completely engrossed in her latest installment of her Dr. Charlie Stone series. She has a very vivid imagination, creating some spectacular evil serial killers and scenarios.
I loved following Charlie, Michael, Tony, Buzz, and Kaminsky to Las Vegas on their latest case. The dynamic between all of the characters is phenomenal. Tony is still determined to try to get Charlie romantically interested in him, but Michael isn't about to give up on the sizzling chemistry he shares with Charlie...and prove that "Dudly Do Right" doesn't have what she needs. I also liked seeing Lena's vulnerable side, as the search for her sister intensified. Poor Buzz has his work cut out for him to get Lena to completely give herself to him.
Michael fights a seemingly impossible battle as he tries to avoid Spookville, but some things are just inevitable...unless he can find a loop in the cosmos, though it may be too late. Charlie could loose him forever.
HER LAST WHISPER contained many twists and turns that I didn't see coming, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The only thing I didn't like about this book was when I realized that I have to wait until the next installment to find out if Charlie and Michael will get their HEA and that it ended at a cliffhanger. :( I canNOT wait until then!!!!!
I'll say the same about each of the books in this series.....This book was fun, the plot twists were many, the men were hot, and the sex was hotter. That's all you need to know!
Seriously, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. I read 1-3 in 3 days. Each one leaves off with an awesome hook! Can't wait for #4 to come out.
By this third book, I was wondering how many times Charlie can realistically get caught by a serial killer and live to tell the tale. Come on, why does Charlie always have to go into the field? She doesn't carry a gun, isn't trained in any self defense...she should stay behind the desk.
But I love her and Michael so much, and I'm DYING to know more of his past, that I don't care how many times she gets caught.
I also CAN NOT WAIT to find out who this mystery man is that appears at the very end and how Michael is going to get back to her. I have some theories, but I'll have to wait until August to see if I'm right.
Liked this one better than the last one. It stuck to the relationship between the hero and the heroine a little closer. More stuff was revealed about Michael and his history and why he might be going to hell. The mystery was secondary but was solid. I felt like the characters did a good job solving the crime and there wasn't a bunch of deus ex machine to get them out of their situation during the climax. The actions of the hero to save the heroine made sense and were well set up throughout the book.
So sign me up for the next one because this one ended on a HUGE cliffhanger!
I ploughed through this one as I both really enjoyed the story and the characters. Is it a bit predictive and a little silly? Yes. But I’m ok with that. I’m going straight into the next one.
I borrowed this book from my local library. A friend from good reads read it and she liked it. I was like her and wasn't disappointed in reading it. I hope the author has a sequel to it as it ended like there could be one. I hope to read more books by this author.
I really enjoyed the second half of this book, when the search for a serial killer in Las Vegas starts. Charlie joins an FBI team hoping to rescue a woman before she too is killed, with the help of her friend Tam, who is a psychic, and Michael, who is a hot ghost attached to her.
My rating is lowered because I got bored with the comments about this hottie's physique, and it took a long time (half the book) to get to the murder mystery. (The first part is mostly about paranormal stuff related to attempts to drag Michael into the dark side and the complicated relationship between Charlie and her ghost.) I almost stopped several times, but I'm glad I continued on.
This one hit all the marks!! What a delightful read. Michael as always was spectacularly funny. I found the case extremely interesting and unpredictable. The twist reveal really got my blood pumping. Overall I am super satisfied with this one and cannot wish to read the finale. Rooting for your happy ending Charlie.
I can definitely say that Karen Robards Charlie Stone series makes for compelling reading. I started Her Last Whisper in the morning, and couldn’t keep myself from grabbing it at every opportunity; breaks, lunch, bus rides, making dinner, eating dinner, (taking the book to the bathroom with me…) etc. I finished before bedtime, because I couldn’t wait that long to wrap it up.
But there are definitely points where it’s compelling like watching a three-car pileup on the expressway. It’s horrific and you can’t turn your eyes away. It’s a train-wreck book.
First, Charlie falls in love with a ghost. It’s not the first time I’ve read this particular trope, and it can work. Stacey Kennedy’s Supernaturally Kissed is a great example of a story where this trope does work.
But, Dr. Charlie Stone is also a psychiatrist who studies serial killers. She went into that particular line of work because she survived a serial killer when she was a child. But then she goes and falls in love with one of the serial killers she is studying. OK, that actually happens, sort of.
But Charlie goes the “falling for an inmate” trope several stages further. Charlie also sees dead people. And the serial killer that she has fallen for is the aforementioned ghost. She knows this whole scenario is too stupid to live, she even calls herself out on that, but she continues anyway.
And for the cherry on the sundae, Charlie works with an elite FBI unit that chases serial killers, and one of the very much alive FBI agents wants to make their relationship personal. But Charlie is way too hung up on the gorgeous dead guy to give the equally gorgeous living one a chance.
Into this mess we throw the hunt for another serial killer. In this case, the case gets much too close to home, as the serial killer has kidnapped the sister of one of the other FBI agents, and eventually grabs Charlie’s friend as well.
So Charlie keeps dividing her attention between the sexy ghost that follows her every move, and the serial killer that she needs to find before he kills again.
Her Last Whisper should be a thriller about the serial killer. The case is plenty gruesome, especially with the personal angles thrown in. Whoever this guy is, he’s been kidnapping women off the very busy streets of Las Vegas for two years, and it isn’t until the FBI shows up that anyone even figures out that there IS a serial killer.
But the focus, instead is on the relationship between Charlie and Michael Garland, her drop-dead-sexy-but-mostly-just-dead convicted serial killer. Charlie spends most of her energy trying to determine whether Garland was really guilty, and figuring out ways to keep his ghost from going to Spookyville, because whatever he did it made him ineligible for heaven. After six weeks of Garland hanging around, Charlotte has come to rely on his help in her cases, and has fallen head over heels for a man she absolutely can’t have.
Which doesn’t keep her from trying (and occasionally briefly succeeding) through each twist and turn of a very nasty case.
Escape Rating B-: I have to give points for extreme readability. This series is addicting, quite possibly in the way that chocolate is addicting. Or maybe like some kind of drug. Once you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole, you absolutely have to keep going. Just when you’re sure it can’t get any crazier, it does.
Unlike the previous book in the series, The Last Kiss Goodbye, the hunt for the live serial killer carries equal weight with the angst about keeping her dead serial killer attached to this world. The case that she and the team are trying to solve is chilling, thrilling and disgusting in equal turns.
But Charlie involves a friend who is also psychic in her increasingly desperate attempts to keep Michael Garland around. That involvement makes her friend a target for the live serial killer, just upping the ante on how crazy things get.
As the story progressed, I thought I figured out how the author was going to manage to pull a happy ending rabbit-trick out of relationship-with-the-dead hat. But as the story ended (on a horrific cliffhanger) I decided that I had been on the wrong track.
How many live serial killers can Charlie survive while she continues to be distracted by her feelings for a dead one? Tune in next year (I hope it’s next year and not longer) to find out. I know I will. I’m compelled!
———- Her Last Whisper is the third book in the Dr. Charlotte Stone series by Karen Robards. I loved the first two books of this series enough to call them 5 star favorites.
This book has different paranormal aspects than my usual urban fantasy reads. Charlie (Charlotte) sees dead people and after her ordeal in book 2, now she hears them even if they aren’t with her. She is a doctor and studies serial killers. Tony, an FBI guy, pulls her into some of his cases, because he likes her, but he gets her nearly killed each time.
Charlie’s best friend, Tam Green, is a psychic. We see more of her in this story. I like her. She seems mostly smart and funny. She is a real psychic, not some fake game. The other characters are ok but Ijust don’t connect to them as I do Michael and Charlie.
Michael, her ghost, tries to keep her away from Tony and out of the cases. At great personal risk and agony, he continually protects Charlie. I understand Charlie not wanting Michael telling her what to do, but it is hot when he’s bossy. And she is bordering on TSTL. As I said in my review for book two (which you can read on Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ), I LOVE Michael.
Charlie, I am starting to find a bit annoying. She’s a smart, educated, capable woman. She tries to talk herself out of how she feels. I find that stupid. You feel what you feel, own it. You can’t control your feelings, only your actions and your responses. She seems to have limited emotional, relationship experience and hopefully she is growing throughout this series. I’m finding it more painful than she is, I think. That’s probably why I love Michael – he tells it like it is.
This book continues on similar to the first two books, in that there is a big case with Charlie helping out the FBI. It’s ok. I like mysteries and the details they go through to follow clues and catch the killer, that’s all fine. I guess I just like more romance and less of the mystery. There was romance here but Charlie was being all stupid, so it wasn’t as satisfying as it could be. There was sex and it was hot. Michael is HOT. And he’s funny too.
We did learn a little more about Michael and his past at least, and I really enjoyed that. I would like more about him and Charlie, as far as their lives, relatives, etc. And most of all, I want more time and dialogue with them together. Not necessarily sex, but conversations between them.
My other big problem here is this. Michael was in jail, convicted of murder. He says he is innocent. He died. Why isn’t Charlie doing more to research his case and prove him innocent? She believes he is innocent. THAT is the book I want. She did have the DNA retested and it is his. So either he has been framed or he has a twin? Also, I hope the title of this book has meaning going forward.
The ending is a bit of a quick twist which I am thinking sets up the next book. I’m hoping this leads down the past of proving Michael’s innocence. And Tam needs to help her figure out how to have a life with Michael, even if he is a ghost.
So I’m not realistic? I want what I want. This is FICTION; the author can make up her own rules. I have high hopes for the next book and will keep reading. I wouldn’t read Her Last Whisper without reading the first two books but they are worth it. They are both strong 5 star reads for me. Unfortunately, this one did not quite live up to them.
3 stars
Giggle worthy quote -
“Tony continued, ‘And as for the illicit love affair Ms. Green mentioned – well, that isn’t me, either.’
At that pointed remark, Charlie felt guilty. A reflexive glance in the mirror at the cause of her guilty feeling – that would be Michael, whom she forgot she couldn’t actually see that way because his reflection didn’t show up in mirrors – revealed Lena and Buzz exchanging uncomfortable glances.
In other words, in that car, for that moment, there was a whole lot of guilt going around.
‘Dudley’s talking about Pebbles and Bam-Bam back here, not you and me.’ Michael’s voice was dry. He could see her through the mirror even if she couldn’t see him. ‘Jesus, babe, don’t ever play poker.’”
Books in the Charlotte Stone series - The Last Victim The Last Kiss Goodbye Her Last Whisper
I keep waffling between a 4 and 5 for this one. My gut and my infatuation for Garland keeps screaming 5, yet certain aspects of the book keep saying 4. We'll call it a draw and go with a 4.5, rounded up.
I've adored this series from the beginning; seemingly sound-of-mind Dr. Charlotte Stone finds herself romantically entangled with a ghost. Not just any ghost, mind you. The ghost of one Michael Allen Garland, inmate of Wallens Ridge State Prison until his untimely death inside the prison walls. Charlie is a psychiatrist who works inside the prison in order to gain a fuller understanding of serial killers and what makes them tick. Michael Garland was her patient inside the prison and yes, he was in prison because he was charged as being a serial killer. Fortunately (or unfortuately, depends on how you see it), she is also able to see him after his death, where he becomes her new, invisible sidekick.
What I've loved about this series from the start is the attraction Charlie and Michael have for one another, and the fact that the pairing is between two people who exist on different planes. That's quite a unique spin and despite the seemingly odd pairing, it works for me. Regardless of Garland's past and his conviction as being a murderer, Charlie knows deep inside it wasn't him. Garland is not a forthcoming fellow; he doesn't reveal much, if anything, about his conviction. She is still hell-bent on getting the truth of the his past revealed, yet Garland being Garland only offers tidbits of useless information. Both of these elements really add so much to this series, yet the latter is rather frustrating at times.
While the relationship at the beginning was something fresh and exciting, I've found that after 3 book in this series it gets rather depressing after awhile. Charlie is coming to terms with the fact that he isn't flesh-and-blood any longer, no matter how real he feels to her; Garland keeps wrestling with the fact that he's head over heels in love with Charlie and would do anything to protect her, yet as an incorporeal being, he's unable to. He's also coming to the realization that even his time as incorporeal may be limited. As readers of this series know, Spookville has always been calling, but in this third installment, the call is strong. The love triangle is also something a bit different - Charlie has a flesh-and-blood, real man vying for her attention in the form of Tony Bartoli, yet her heart remains with Garland.
Of course, as the is the pattern for this series, Charlie is asked to help yet again on a case involving a possible serial killer. She, Tony, Buzz, and Lena travel to Las Vegas because Lena's sister is missing. As always, Charlie's ability to see and talk to ghosts helps with the investigation, but she skirts the line between semi-normal and nutty on quite a few occasions. Despite her appearance as someone who always talks to herself and who can pull facts and scenarios out of seemingly thin air, Tony and team still keep her around :) Also in this installment, a little bit more of Garland's past is revealed. Not too much, but just enough to get a handle on who and what he was before prison. I fully expect that any sort of revelations about him will again be spread out through several more books, so don't expect too much in that regard.
Bottom line - great installment for this series and be warned: the ending is a cliffhanger. I am growing tired of the cliffhanger, which is one of the reasons I wanted to take off a star. But it certainly does leave me with wanting more which I suppose is the whole point of that infernal cliffie. I definitely recommend this series, especially if you are a fan of romantic suspense with a paranormal twist. I also recommend starting at the beginning of the series with The Last Victim so you can experience Charlie and Garland's relationship from the starting point.
**eARC received on behalf of the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher, via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
This is book three in the series and absolutely is NOT a standalone. While I'll grant you a story about a criminal psychiatrist who can see the ghosts of the violently departed and is involved in a love triangle with a living FBI agent and a dead serial killer sounds like an altogether insane and confusing plotline, reading this book without reading the others is only going to make things worse. Moreover, my review isn't going to make any sense if you don't know the characters either.
Reviews for previous books in the series:
The Last Victim
The Last Kiss Goodbye
So to start with, this is definitely not the end of a trilogy. Imagine me banging my head against the wall, repeatedly. I don't know where I got it into my head that this would be a trilogy, but I honestly thought it was, and the ending of book 2 for some reason reinforced that impression. It's not, so now I've got to be all irritated waiting around for the next book. I'm truly hoping that one has some sort of resolution, because as understanding as I was about this being a multiple book thing after the first one, because this kind of crazy sauce definitely needed a little more room to work, the bloom is definitely off the rose so far as I'm concerned, and I'm looking for some payoff.
Charlie's back at work in the prison with a truly irritated ghost who thinks she should be on a vacation after her last case. That last case had the unfortunate side effect of opening her senses even further to ghosts, which is where her issues in this book pick up. She also has serious trouble saying no to the FBI, no matter how much she exclaims about how all she wants to do is finish her research. I'd doubt her resolve, but this particular case involves Lena's sister, so I can understand why she feels she needs to help. Which I guesses is my next point; I've become much more interested in Lena and Buzz's story than I am Charlie and Michael, despite the former pair's relatively short page time. When you are just waiting for the resolution of the main characters and find yourself less and less interested in their story, that's a problem. Granted, we find out a whole lot more about Michael, and the story definitely flirts with exploring the nature of guilt and innocence and what does it take to be dammed. Philosophically, it starts to explore if we are condemned not just for what we've done, but our own perspective of and feelings about our actions. But, it doesn't delve long or deeply into those themes. And I want a happily ever after for Michael in the worst way. What's happened to him and what may happen keeps me invested to a point. This is definitely the point where the next book better dammed well give me a happily ever after or I'm going to have less than pleased feelings about the series as a whole. It's felt like we've been building towards something, but without any payoff, this pleasant feelings may evaporate to nothing.
In the end, this is still my kind of crazy sauce story. As I was reading it, I was kept entertained by the mystery and the characters. I honestly didn't see the perpetrator coming, but that could be mostly because I was blinded by the crazy that is Spookville and the relationship between Charlie and Michael. But the ending just feels like being jerked around, so in retrospect, it colors my feelings tremendously. I waiver between enjoying this insanity and being absolutely irritated by the whole thing. Book 4 is either going to see me thrilled with a truly bizarre series, or pissed I've wasted this many hours of my life on something.
"He doesn't deserve what's happening to him,' she told Tam fiercely. "I know him. I vouch for him. He is - was- a good man."
Her Last Whisper is book three in a series that should be read in order for the best reading experience!
This one starts out a little slower than the others I felt. One of the other FBI agents sister is missing and Charlie sets off to Vegas to help. With Michael in tow. They are burning bright. And Charlie is now recognizing how she truly feels for him. And that she'll do anything to keep him with her.
Another great addition to this series. I am really enjoying my rereads on audio. There's passion, suspense, action and mystery to keep you turning the pages. You can't help but root for these two, but it seems impossible that they will end up together, especially with that end!! And then there is Tony... Excited to reread the finale-I can't remember how it ends!

Genre: Romance / Paranormal/Thriller
Audience: Fans of previous Karen Robards novels, particularly fans of her Charlie Stone will love this book
Series: Dr. Charlotte Stone (#3)
Summary: Book blurb from Amazon website: “Madness and murder invaded Dr. Charlotte Stone’s life when she was just a girl—and made her a woman determined to save others from the horror she survived. An expert in the psychology of serial killers, she’s faced down more than her share of human monsters. But Charlie can also communicate with the spirits of those who die violently, an extrasensory skill that has helped the FBI bring lethal predators to justice. Now, after narrowly escaping death a second time, Charlie’s ready to step away from the edge . . . before her luck runs out.
Too bad Charlie is too dedicated for her own good—and too devoted to federal agent Tony Bartoli to say no when he asks her to ride shotgun on yet another risky mission. Of course, she already has her hands full with Michael Garland: the handsome, roguish ghost with whom she’s hopelessly in love—a spirit who depends on Charlie to keep him from slipping forever into the dark side of the afterlife.
But for Charlie, the only way to cage her quarry is to plunge back into the homicidal hell she vowed to leave behind—and may not leave alive.”
REVIEW AND OPINION: I know this is blasphemous, but I’ve never been a huge Karen Robards fan. Despite previous titles I’ve tried to read, this book completely won me over. While it was a slow start, and admitting I haven’t read the previous two books in this series, Robards pulled no punches and swept readers along to an extremely satisfying conclusion. I absolutely love the romance between Charlie and Michael, and hope Robards can come up with a way for them to be together.
I will DEFINITELY read the previous books in this series!
