"Roll up, roll up for the most exciting ride of your lives Choose your favourite pony and let the Magic Carousel whisk you away on an amazing adventure "
Laura is amazed when the Magic Carousel whirls her into the dusty stampede of the Wild West. She's now a rootin' tootin' cowgirl, complete with stetson and lasso Together with her pony, Star, she must earn her spurs by rescuing an orphaned calf from fast-flowing rapids, and foil a low-down, dastardly cattle-thieving plot.
My 3.5 year old daughter picked this out at the library. While she sat through it all, there really weren't enough illustrations to hold her interest. Her 5.5 year old brother understood and followed the story best.
I do think this would be a really fun series for a young girl who loves horses to read, either as an independent early reader or as a read aloud with mom or dad. The idea is that there is a magic carousel that transports riders to a different place and time while they enjoy an adventure with the horse (star was a wild west cowgirl horse, so that was the adventure for this book). We did not miss anything by starting with book 3. The story follows a simple conflict resolution plot line and would work well for teaching early literacy concepts.
