Rate this book
Hired to help look for prime minister's missing son, Gabriel 'Scorpion' Kelly quickly realizes the job is not going to be an easy one—not long after they enter the deadly wastelands skirting the edge of civilization, all of the search party is killed, save for Scorpion and one other man, the frustrating Love Ferrier.

Despite the ominous start, and the fact they can't seem to get along for more than minutes at a time, Scorpion and Love press on in search of the missing boy and the ruthless killers who took him. But even as they strive to navigate their miserable surroundings-- and their personal differences-- outside forces threaten to keep them permanently apart.

Rachel White was born and raised in L.A., California, but moved north for college. An avid reader for as long as she can remember, she started writing in high school and hasn’t stopped since. Though her favorite genre is probably fantasy, she’ll devour a good book no matter what shelf it belongs to, and she takes an equally experimental approach to her own writing, hopping between ideas, genres, and stories as it suits her.

Along with writing, Rachel has been drawing since she was a little girl and also loves to bake, particularly bread; don't ask her about her sourdough starter unless you really want to know. Writing, however, remains her first and strongest passion.

Ok. I absolutely love when hard prickly men turn ooey gooey for someone they never expected to. But not too ooey gooey. AND THIS STORY WAS THAT. AND IT WAS SO GOOD. Great world building. Loved the characters. It left me with a huge smile on my face. --> :D 4.5 stars

Wow, I enjoyed this one so much! It's an adventure novel, in a fantasy/Old West setting, with a good amount of romance and character development woven skillfully with action and magic. The main characters spend most of the novel alone together. Getting to know each other is a slow and emotional process in a miserable environment, but the pacing is excellent and the story never dragged, even when the characters were sharing their dark pasts with each other.

I really empathized with Love and Scorpion both and was glad that they found each other. They were also both likable to me; I'm not usually a big fan of constant bickering in romance novels, but it worked well here. The plot was very good and I really didn't know how it was going to be resolved until near the end - . Love's inner struggles were also an important part of the story, and I felt that the author handled a few sensitive subjects deftly.

In the end, I definitely felt hopeful about Love and Scorpion's future together, even though Love clearly doesn't seem to have any soft edges. I could see how they fit together, and it was surprisingly sweet, after such a difficult beginning. I'm just sorry that I've now read all of this author's excellent fantasy novels, because now I need to wait for her next release!

Mixed feelings about this one. I appreciated the atypical character of Love Ferrier, in my opinion the strongest part of this book. On the other hand having him as one of the protagonists did nothing good to the romance. Scorpion and him as lovers felt very weird, forced even. The first scene between them was so unexpected, no chemistry whatsoever. And scenes implying their dynamic were mostly told not shown.
About the plot, it was fairly simple, nothing big happens. Although, it could be the beginning of a series, definitely has the necessary elements to be developed further. The setting of Wasteland was very good as background for the story. Hopefully we will see more of this.

Solid 4.5. I absolutely loved it. I'm on a less-than-three press binge and this one is definitely in my top favs. It had a really beautiful amount of worldbuilding/lore, just enough to make me want more but get a clear sense of what it was like in their.. Fallout-esque wasteland. Perfectly paranormal with a light touch of fantasy. The only thing I was sort of disappointed in was the lack of sex scenes. There was one, and it left me drooling for more, while it was mentioned repeatedly that they screwed around pretty much every night, I was bemoaned that there was only one clear scene where they had sex. Other than that, really really beautiful story with atypical characters and a lovely voice. I even loved the ending which is usually my least favorite part of books. Anyway. Totally worth picking up. I bought the ebook and DEVOURED it on my flight home, and loved it so much i went back and bought the paperback. Definitely give it a read if you like the wild west and monsters and handsome boy love.

Strange that this book doesn't have many reviews. I actually really enjoyed it, and read it in one sitting. Hopefully no spoilers, but I can't promise. Oh and apologies for grammar/spelling, I'm writing this at 5am after reading the book through the night. Yeah I know, don't tell me.

Scorpion, chosen for his knowledge of wastelands and its deadly inhabitants, is a bounty hunter/mercenary (started ranger training but never completed it) who takes on jobs of taking down villains and i guess tracking missing person's. He's got some famous villains under his gun belt.Cocky and full of himself, a little rough around the edges, his charm isn't lost on Love Ferrier, the Government tracker Witch who is sent with Scorpion and a team of bodyguards into the wastelands to search for Sidney. Love is there to also provide a magical barrier from the harsh side effects the wastelands.

Initially Love comes across as an uptight snarky spoilt brat, and that chill is definitely in Scorpions direction, but as the story progresses and Love grudgingly gets used to Scorpion, you get to learn that whilst he is privileged, his upbringing hasn't all been a bed of roses. I won't say too much, but I can understand the initial frostiness of Love, portrayed as a uppity socially elitist brat when this was really a deflective shield to protect from future hurt and disappointment/guilt... his fragile mind held behind a wall of thorns. Although Sidneys, "I like sex." Statement is rather out of the blue and made my eyebrows raise. But...well he doesn't come across as the most rational cool cucumber you'd meet. More like a smexy mad scientist without the crazy hair.

Other things are happening, not just the search for Sidney Gunn, the Prime ministers missing kid. While approaching the wastelands Scorpion questions a near by town to see if he can undercover any clues as to where the boy is and why he has gone missing. The town's people speak of other residents that have also disappeared, and the tale of a spooky dark man that shows up at the same time. Could he also be responsible for Sidney's disappearance?

The bodyguards that come along, well, they are side characters that I didn't really pay much attention to tbh.Or rather the dialogue was read but I can't say it was memorable. I know one of the guards had an annoying crush on Love that reared its jealous head, and I felt like he needed to back off biatch.

It's a m/m romance between a cocky bounty hunter and a snarky snipey witch tracker. It's a hunt for a lost boy. The reader is lead on the hunt for Sidney across the magical wastelands, where the sun never sets and the plant life is poisonous, and the local wasteling residents are also deadly things from your nightmares. (I pictured them like giant cockroaches with black shells, like those giant bugs from the movie Mimic.)

The general feel of the story is that it's set in the future? But there is also a western feel to the story. Maybe because the guards and Scorpion carry guns in holsters and ride out on horses. Technology doesn't appear to be mentioned? Although items are magically spelled to work in the wastelands...I dunno why that speaks to me of technological advancement. I guess I just equate modern times and magic to mean technological advancement as well.

Anyway, I thought this book deserved a review and four stars. One because the story kept me reading all through the night, two because I really couldn't believe the slim pickings of reviews. Three, because it's worth a read, well... I'm just confused that I found the book worth four stars and there's hardly no reviews. Weird. Boggled my mind that did.

This book reads a bit like a western, but with monsters and magic. Plus, there's an ounce of mystery in it too. And let's not forget all that wonderful enemy-to-lover romance! Overall, it was a captivating read.
