I am enjoying this series quite a bit, I really am, but the romance is still driving me nuts so let's get that out of the way, huh? 😅

Kayle and Mary... I still do not ship it! So we started off the series with Mary’s love interest being Cy, the new boy in school who was really funny and sweet. Cy has an older brother Kyle, who was an absolute dick to Mary in the first book. But things happened, he changed, and now they’re together and I. Don't. Like. It. And it even sounds like Mary herself isn’t super into it. Girl, seriously 🙄

Oh and Cy is still together with Vicky, a horrible cheerleader person whom he did NOT like in book one for valid reasons. But look at them now! And it sucks because it seems like Mary may still have a thing for Cy?

"[Kyle’s] more serious. I don't think I could talk silly with him. It wouldn't be as easy to joke around. I'm more relaxed with Cy, at least I was."
Rachel sighed. "This doesn't look good."

Yes! Exactly! She’s just settling, to be honest. Sigh. I had such high hopes. But you know what, if she’s not into Kyle as much as she thought she was, she shouldn't be leading him on. At points in the book it almost sounds like she's trying to convince herself that she likes Kyle, and not only because he’s Cy’s brother. I just don’t like it. And it’s not only because I don’t ship it, but also don’t play with the guy. Come on. But even I have to admit that she and Kyle had their cute moments and that Kyle can be pretty sweet now... But still! It just doesn't feel right!

Enough about Kyle and Mary though because UGH. In this book, Mary is dealing with weird phone calls, weird packages, and she’s even losing time. It’s all very weird. Anyway, she finds herself in some real trouble in this one and the situation is actually quite scary.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, despite my issues with Mary and Kyle. But I liked everything else! I love the characters and Mary’s relationship with Rachel and what a great, supportive friend she is. I really am enjoying this series 🖤

She was Scary Mary. She kicked ghosts’ and Shadowmen’s butts.

I loved this series. The protagonist, "Scary Mary," is a real, three-dimensional teenage girl with "issues." I binged these books and own them all! Loved it. It may have YA characters, but adults will enjoy it too. It's not dumbed-down; it's a very well told story.

Only giving this one four stars because while I get the need to round up completely what happened having the same monster made it slightly repetitive especially since she stabbed it again. But I like that Kyle just accepts the crazy and I'm interested to see how the reality tv thing goes because I felt that defiantly wasn't finished with. Also I love the obsidian blade though they seem to be popping up in books everywhere these days. Mary does come across as a bit selfish like she wanted Rachel to know everything about her but not once does she ask what's going on with her friend no wonder she only has the one. Last thing I loved the ghost in the dress a great idea

***SPOILERS*****

This is the third book in the Scary Mary series. This one is called Broken Spirits. The conflict and the characterization is very important when reading this series. Kyle is one character that will be talked about, Kyle is another character's brother. Kyle is very kind, this is proven throughout broken spirits. He also helps Mary with lots of things such as finding out what the shadowman is about. The conflict is also important make sure read the first two books to fully understand the conflict of this book. Which is about Mary who is trying to figure out how to open some sort of magical box and also finding out how the shadowman reappeared. Kyle is a very kind and good person there are so many examples, which will be explained. Also the shadowman is a scary creature. It lives in the darkness and only does dark things. Such as stealing a dead man's hand.
Kyle is a kind and good person. Because of all the things he does that most people won't do. He continually smiling throughout the book. Showing a genuine smile shows politeness and kindness. “He was still smiling when he got into his truck” (reading p.285). Mary says ”He really is a nice guy” several times, and he proves this by sticking by her side. Kyle also said “How was your day” (bad touch p.358). That question doesn't seem like much but just by saying that can really bring someone's spirits up, which is quite a nice thing to do.“I threw myself at the door and after a couple of tries, I got the door the burst open” (nightmare p.482). He did this to save Mary from being in grave danger. One last example of Kyle being a kind person is him asking Mary “Do you want to hangout tonight” (bad touch p.358). Now Mary has a weird life, and Kyle knows this, but he is still willing to go out with her, he likes her for who she is freakiness and all! That definitely says he's a kind and good person for sure.
The shadowman is a creepy creature. Because of all the evil things it does. It is a creepy creature because of a few of the things it said and did. Such as “soon I'll be able to pull silver from humans again, and I won't be tethered to a human” (getting sleepy p.24). This proves the shadowman is a creepy creature because nothing good pulls silver out of human beings. It also said “Darkness is what I need” (getting sleepy p.605). What good creature needs darkness to survive? Another thing it did to prove it’s creepy and evil is that it “cut off Mr.White's hand” (getting sleepy p.605). It did this to do more bad deeds. One of the last things it did that's creepy is that Mary “was awake, and the shadowman was controlling her” (waking up p.697). That definitely proves it's a creepy and bad creature. Hopefully they get rid of this thing before it does worse things to people.
Kyle is characterized and the shadowman is apart of the main conflict. Broken Spirits is about the shadowman, and Kyle is seen more often then the second book Stalking Shadows. Kyle is a good and kind hearted person. But the shadowman is the complete opposite it's a creepy and evil thing. But opposites are a great thing to have in books it makes things more interesting, exciting and makes the book more enjoyable to read. Please read this amazing series, it’s probably one of the best series the reader has ever read.

This book was even better than the last two and I gave those 5-stars as well. This one brought Kyle, Cy's older brother, into the picture more, you might remember him as the one who tried to kill Mary when he was possessed in the first book. This time, though, he's worked really hard at making it up to Mary and being there for her even when she has no idea why he would want to be. He's popular, he's cool, he's cute; why her?

Well now she's his date to homecoming and needs a dress. There's nothing quite like a possessed dress to jump you into this ghost story.

“Oh, yeah? Prove it!” Rachel said.
“You secretly like Justin Bieber.”
“Fiend!” Rachel shouted and shook her bells at her.

Dating is very foreign territory for Mary and she treads this terrain with wonderful humor and realistic aspects of what it's like to start dating for the first time. Like when she asks Kyle out on a movie date because it's the 21st century and a girl can do that, except she accidentally invites Rachel too and now it's kind of awkward.

Any nudges or touches from Rach were completely unnoteworthy. On the Kyle side, the merest ruffle of air made her tense up and over analyze it. What did that nudge mean? Was he uncomfortable? Did he want the armrest all to himself?

Girl, same. I've definitely had my fair share of movie dates with those thoughts. Onto the story, this one revolves around possession. The Shadowman she thought she defeated is back. It won't leave her alone. Why can't she catch a break? It'll take help from her new friends and a frenemy to get to the bottom of this one.

(This review may contain spoilers).

It's been a while since I read the previous two books in this series, but I was quickly able to pick up the storyline and relate to the characters really easily.

I do feel for Mary, but it's nice to see that she does have people who truly care about her. I felt that the author did a really good job of showing how difficult things were for her with the Shadowman and everything.

It was really good to see Marvin and Gladys in this book. The two ghosts were amusing, interesting characters and I'd like to see more of them in later books. Remembering about Chowder was quite sad - it was like grieving the memory of a friend.

It was really good to see Rachel and Kyle. I particularly liked Kyle in this book. I really like the forming of his relationship with Mary.

The book was mostly well-written, but I did notice a few mistakes. There was nothing really major, but I did notice them.

I'm definitely looking forward to book four in this series, but I'll have to do what I did with this book and forget about it, since otherwise I'll be checking Amazon every day.

Mary can't catch a break in this book. Monsters are out to get her and she can't get her act straight to have a normal relationship with Kyle. Their romance is cute but there isn't much action on that front beyond a make out session. If you liked the first two books, definitely give this one a go. There is a creepy factor that made this one my favorite so far. While there is an ending to the events of this book, there is also a cliffhanger in the last few paragraphs, so looking forward to book 4...
The only negative thing I would add is that there were a bunch of editing errors (missing words, wrong words, things like that). I didn't find it detracted enough to bring down the rating, I still enjoyed the book.

The third book is better than the second which was better than the first. Although 3 books in and I still don't connect with Mary's best friend Rachel. Gran though... I adore her. Kyle could stand to be a bit more interesting too but so much goes on with the paranormal in this book that there really isn't time to explore him.

The cliffhanger for the 4th book looks promising. Although I'll be a little bummed if she goes after this jake character instead of getting to know Kyle better. And HOPEFULLY Rachel will be more developed. I want to like her but despite eye being such a big part of Mary's life, there's just not a lot there.

I really am enjoying this series. Usually by about this book, the series starts fizzling out, or does a change-up that annoys me and makes me not want to read anymore books. I haven't hit the wall yet in this series, and that a good sign.

She has taken this story to new heights by introducing a "character" that I'm not sure got completely resolved this time, and that makes me more interested in seeing where Ms. Hunter takes Mary and her friends next.

Three and 1/2 stars.

Mary wanted nothing more than to leave behind some of the scary events she'd just been through, but the Shadowman returned with a vengeance. Mary, Gran, and Kyle search for a solution in spite of Rachel's seeming unfriendliness. It takes a psychiatrist, even Vicky, and some ghosts from previous events to get Mary the help she needs to hopefully get her life back to 'normal'.

This is another great read. Although I feel I've been able to connect with Mary in the previous books, I feel a much stronger connection with her in this book. Mary goes through so many emotions in this book and the writing captures it so well. This book is well paced and a quick read.

This series is so fun to read. I love Mary and her friends. Mary is so unsure of herself at times but with the help of her Gran and friends she can get through anything.

Really loving this series, and everything that happens to our poor Mary.... This book sees a scary shadow man, which Mary hasn't encountered before, but thankfully another great read!
