The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, (colloquially, the “Met”) is the largest art museum in the United States.
It was founded on April 13, 1870, "to be located in the City of New York, for the purpose of establishing and maintaining in said city a Museum and library of art, of encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts, and the application of arts to manufacture and practical life, of advancing the general knowledge of kindred subjects, and, to that end, of furnishing popular instruction."
Good introductory volume and a helpful educational guide to learn more about the art of the Islamicate world, for those of us who aren't narcissistic. It's a great guide for those of us actually interested in other cultures and the diverse world we live in. One critique of the guide, however, is that there are aspects of the Islamicate world that aren't included that I consider essential. They state at the beginning that they've chosen to highlight their own collection in the volume, and I can fully understand this choice. They are a museum after all.
My reason for reading this, also, is that I find introductory volumes are helpful to me when I quickly have to look up a term, a time period, a map etc. I'm not an educator but this book is, of course, ideal for educators. However, I wouldn't recommend this book on its own but as a step in the right direction.
