"Kolkatar Jangole" is basically a 'kishor-upanyas', i.e., novel for teenagers. It was my first book of Sunil Gangopadhyay and was a really nice read.
I, though I am Bengali by birth, but having never read the language in school and having never spent my main school years in Bengal, I am starting from the children's and the teenager's section in my twenties. And for a beginner like me, this was an ideal read. Because of the 'thrill-n-chase' sequence in this detective novel, rather novella, so it seems, the barrier possessed by language weakens as I continued reading it too keep up with the pace of the mystery. By reading more similar books, slowly I hope the barrier of the language will be overcome eventually and I will be able to read more complex works in Bengali.
The complexity of the mystery of the book is a notch higher than that of the level of the Nancy Drew stories, but is a pleasant read and not boring. Being two decades older and being familiar with too many excellent books of this genre, a few plots were predictable but never dull. It is also a small.
The language is modern Bengali, most suited for beginners in this language. It took me about three hours to finish, and my Bengali reading is medium paced and I have problems with some uncommon words of the language. Overall this book was a pleasure to read, and have excited me to read more of the author and his series of "Kakababu".
I give this book 3.5 stars.
Happy reading! :)
